So I just did my first smog test today. I had a little trouble finding this place because the whole block either fixed/tested/sold cars. Be sure to call first! This is the best of the best smog check that I've ever experienced! Yelp did have today's (Tuesday) hours incorrect. It said on my so-called smartphone that they opened at 8:30. I pulled up at 8:15 and they were open. First of all, the shop is very clean. Secondly the staff is welcoming and friendly. I don't use the term "welcoming" lightly. He greeted me and explained how many people were in front of me, and that "It won't take long." I thought to myself, "Yeah right, they all say that." But it actually was fast! This guy (I think it was the owner) was efficient, and worked like a well-oiled machine. I was also happy that there was a check-in discount (for all you non-yelp-app folks, that's something you can use at various businesses with your mobile device). Even if I hadn't passed, I wouldn't give this place a bad review. It's not the smog check shop's fault if your car is modified or has poor emissions. There was also ample parking in the lot. Great service and very honest! I used this smog shop back in December and my car failed do to some minor issues. After all the headache of getting my car fixed I finally came back today and I was taken care of with the same great service as the first time around. The service tech even offered to check my cars computer system before he preformed the smog test on my car just to make sure it'll pass so I don't waste any of my money doing another smog. Great service! I've been coming here for the past 6 years and their work has never disappointed me. Haik is very nice and I highly recommend going to him to get your smog check done. I've moved a few times within the past 6 years, and now drive about 30 minutes to him just for a smog check, because I trust the place. I saw a bad review in the comments, read half of it, and I don't understand how that's possible. Car problems are annoying. Taking the time to go get a smog test is also not how we want to spend our day. A failed smog test is even more annoying. But none of these are reasons to be upset with the service or the shop. It's your car that failed the test and not the service. Frustrating yea but don't bash on an honest business owner and their work. Specially when they helped you out a week before telling you not to do the test before taking care of the check engine light. That shows honesty not lies. I've had my older VW GTI fail a test here in the past, and yes it was frustrating but Haik and his father were very kind and told me what I needed to do before coming back for another test. TERRIBLE SERVICE! I took my truck there and the technician saw I had a check engine light on and still proceeded to do my test. Afterwards he told me I failed my heart and I was obligated to pay. I told him why? And he stated the computer couldn't tell me the code. I asked him if I fixed the issue if I can bring my truck back for a re test. The place was fast and the guy was very friendly, but unfortunately something went wrong with his equipment. Although my car was passing the emissions check numbers, it was putting up a communications failure when connecting to my car's computer (the OBD check). The guy told me that I would have to get the connector repaired most likely. I drove down the street to Pep Boys and had them connect their OBD code checkers to my car, and it worked fine. Ran the smog test there, and everything was okay. I don't know who's at fault here, especially since he did seem to try the connector at least a few times. Probably just some snag in his equipment, but I did wind up overpaying like $40 (for the failed test here) today for what appears to be nothing so I'm a bit annoyed. I'm one, like many others who dread getting the "SMOG certification required" upon receiving your DMV registration renewal. I've been there and done that with my past cars and today was the day I have to do it with my new car, which I have owned for a good 6 years now (Black 2007 Honda Element SC). Finding the time to get the test done, especially when registration is due in 2 weeks can be somewhat stressful... You drive in, looking around like a confused deer because it's just a lot with lots of cars and three businesses operating out of the same 200 sq. ft. area. Finally, someone approaches your vehicle, tells you to double park your car, give another stranger your keys, and wait and indeterminate amount of time. ^^^ All this happened to me, only to be told my car would fail... not because anything is wrong with the car, but because it is "not ready." Basically, I just had $1200 of work done on my car to fix everything wrong with it, but I need to drive it "50-100 more miles" before an assessment can actually be made. When time came to have it smog checked, I tried different places and not one person knew where to hook up the RPM counter, and a few told me to pop the hood...well,this is a mid engine exotic. The backstory: In August, my check engine light went on. I took it to Pinky's where Ralph told me there seemed to be nothing wrong with the car, it was probably a misfire. But to actually diagnose it and repair it, it could get costly. Knowing I hope to get a new car ASAP, he said it's perfectly safe to drive and I should just wait. Now it's January, I'm due for a smog check, and that pesky engine light caused me to fail my first inspection. The owner at Smog Zone went over the numbers with me an said that while they're fine, it's still failing, likely because of the engine light. He suggested I get it reset, drive the car around for 30 miles or so to make sure it doesn't come back, then return for another test. I did just that and soon passed with flying colors! The reset tip probably saved me aprox. $500 in repair work and a lot of frustration. read more

But anyways, I was second in line and he told me that it'll only be a 15 minute wait. I came in a little after they opened, thank god it was not busy. If you're faced with this painful reality, take your sad self over to Smog Zone! You will get in, out, and be treated with kindness and dignity (and don't forget about their $15-off Yelp coupon, like I did!). They have a small, waiting area for you, both inside and outside (yes, they even have a patio), where you can sit in peace and in clean. For an auto shop-related business, this place is actually very well-kept, mindful, pleasant (for the very little amount of time that you will have to spend there), and not at all sketchy or creepy. FYI, their business is right where you drive in, to the right, and not in the back. They share the lot with other car-related what-have-you. Just park wherever, and do your thing. Haik and Sam certainly went above and beyond for me and my disgruntled Scion, which failed its smog test, at first. I had suspected that it would. I had my reasons. If you have a car, 1999 and older, be sure to get ready to haggle for a good price. The manager started with a $75 price for the smog check. He said older cars are charged way higher price because they have to do a lot to check the car. Maybe he meant that they have to check the regular way as oppose to just checking the computer of the newer models (which is far easier and quicker). Anyway, since I was pressed for time, I was able to bring down the price to $50 for the smog check and get on with it. And my car failed the smog check and I was out $50 less certificate cost. So beware. Just a fair warning. Even though lower prices are printed on the wall (behind your head when you enter the office), if you have a car 1999 and older, be ready to haggle. Call first so you don't waste your time. read more
