So I first off want to clarify that I was fortunate enough to win their Instagram balayage giveaway. But I swear that despite that, my review is 100% completely honest!! So when I went in, I already had blonde hair but I hadn't gotten it done since Thanksgiving so my naturally dark hair was peeking through in my roots. My blonde was also very warm and a little bit lackluster (just because it had been months since I last got it done!). So I knew going in that I really wanted to brighten my hair and give it a little refresh. I wanted a little more blonde and was hoping to add some more dimension. One of the owners, Melanie, did my hair. Starting off, I felt totally at home and comfortable. She grabbed me a Diet Coke and spoke with me about my hair and asked what I was looking for. I wanted to be realistic and I wanted to ensure that my hair would last until graduation (I graduate college in seven weeks). She was quick and efficient! We chatted about all sorts of things and honestly the three hours went by so fast!! The head massage/wash was so wonderful and relaxing. I've been wanting to go here for years (been following the account since freshman year) and I'm so glad I finally got the chance! My hair is stunning and Melanie is truly a star. I was a client here for years and worked with two different stylists. Unfortunately, both experiences were disappointing and ultimately damaging to my hair. The first stylist showed little concern for hair health. My hair became severely damaged, and the highlights were poorly done--harsh, with straight lines and clearly visible foil marks. Even after going back for a touch-up, the work never improved. I switched to a second stylist for balayage, hoping for better results. On my most recent visit, I came in only for a toner and specifically asked for a golden honey blonde. Instead, I left with a dark, cool brown color that was the complete opposite of what I requested. Before I even left the salon, the stylist and other staff were trying to wash the color out, which made it clear it was wrong. The stylist knew I was unhappy, but I had a work event that night and had no real option but to leave. I called the salon the next day to have it fixed and was told there was no availability for two weeks. When I finally came back in, the stylist didn't even dry my hair--so there was no way to properly see whether the color had been corrected. Overall, this salon is overpriced, stressful, and inconsistent. Given the cost, I expected professionalism, attention to detail, and respect for client requests. I found Sam on Instagram as a redhead specialist and I AM SO GLAD I DID. When I came in, I talked to her a little about my hair and how I was trying to keep it healthy and grow it out, and she listened and made a long term plan with my color to not only give me the results I wanted but limiting the amount we bleach my hair. It's grown out super nicely in advance of my next appointment next week, but it feels REALLY healthy. I loved how open and honest she was about what was achievable, my cost was less than I anticipated going into it, she was kind and bubbly and made me feel like I was in great hands. Genuinely so thrilled to be going back to her and have found my new home. Red hair is so hard to color and have it look natural and pretty and she achieved it immediately. I'm obsessed with Smitten, and I'm obsessed with Reagan. It's genuinely the best salon I've ever been to, and I was an Ian McCabe loyalist for years. I am obsessive to a fault about my hair, so finding the right stylist is imperative to my metnal health. Reagan (who was a junior stylist at the time) fixed a botched balayage from another salon, and helped transition my super dark, super thick hair to have the perfect ashy blonde balayage. I've since gone back to my literal roots, and my hair has never felt healthier. You can tell that everyone at Smitten genuinely loves their job, from the front desk girls all the way up to the stylists. Not to mention that everyone there looks like an Instagram model, stylists and customers included. The salon itself is just aesthetically perfect. I always end up taking a plethora of pics at the chair, at the hair washing station, etc. Smitten rocks. Most unprofessional salon I've been to. They gave me uneven highlights around my hairline which are especially noticeable when I put my hair up as in the picture below. They refused to take any accountability or fix it free of charge. Said the dark areas were done like that on purpose for dimension. Sounds like they need go back to cosmetology school. The stylist I asked for was gone for maternity leave, my second choice was booked up, so I decided to go with my third choice Maria. Maria is an absolute sweetheart and so fun to talk with. We chatted real quick about what I wanted to do first. She gave me her opinions and before I could even ask my next question, she would already have an answer. Loved her flow and really appreciated her patience when I did have questions or requests. I went in for a bayalage and ended up getting a toned/glaze and hair treatment. My hair came out feeling really shiny and feeling really healthy. Even after the hair glaze, Maria asked if I wanted to go even darker before she went into drying and cutting. I absolutely loved that she even took a moment to give me an alternative suggestion and opportunity to change the color once more. I went in for a trim and a shape up of my gorgeous, thick, long, wavy layered hair. Hair of compliments, the hair envy of all of my friends. People stop me on the street to tell me about my hair, no really. I specifically asked the stylist, Tiffany, to NOT thin out my hair. I like how thick it is. I should have walked out the door the minute she said she was going to blow dry my hair straight to cut it. She clearly had no idea how to cut wavy hair and that was the first indicator I stupidly ignored. Then she spent 15 minutes convincing me why thinning shears are better than pointed scissor cutting (a technique I requested and have had on all of my previous haircuts). She then proceeded to use the point cut to severely thin my hair. She weed whacked my hair. It is so thin that the waves won't define. My full top knot is no longer. It's a much shorter, frizzy, dry, terrible terrible terrible situation. This, after I just told her I spent so many months (over a year and a half) growing out my hair from highlighting damage of another stylist who used to work there AND that I liked the length. WTF. If you have wavy thick hair and actually like it, stay away from Tiffany. Also, the worst shampoo ever unless you like whiplash and water in your ears. I could cure Africa's drought from the water harvested from my ears after that wash. Easily tops the list as one of the worst hair experiences ever. What a mess at Smitten. Thanks for the next year of my life repairing my hair and a waste of $145. Update - I went to a different salon today to have it chopped off to start over after a year of purposely growing it long. PLEASE READ THIS - THIS SALON WILL OVERCHARGE YOU AND REFUSE TO RETURN YOUR MONEY, EVEN IF YOU ASK THE PRICE AHEAD OF TIME OR DURING THE SERVICE I was told my $200 highlight would be under $300, even DURING my appointment, but paid $575 with tip ($475 w/otip) and was told "they don't offer refunds." This salon is more focused on their bottom line than anything else, and I've never in my entire life been more frustrated with how I was treated here. I totally understand a "no refund policy," but I had confirmed the price ahead of time TWICE as I know I have long and thick hair, and my hair is always going to cost more than the base price. I understand not giving refunds on what you KNOW you are paying for, but was then later told after I told them what I was expecting to pay, confirming the price, that they "have a right to do more to my hair." I do NOT want another girl to end up going to this salon with an ABSOLUTELY absurd bill like that and be told that same insane response. OF COURSE this salon has the ability to refund or credit for something they did wrong, but the truth is that they don't want to - they are focused on their bottom line, and if that means lying to others about price, that is what they will do. I feel so frustrated this ended this way, as the salon itself was beautiful. My stylist was incredibly kind, but there was a huge mistake somewhere. I asked her what I would end up paying, and told her I expected my hair would be more. I signed up for $200 for highlights. She told me that I would pay $20 additional per bowl of color, and I literally said "ah no worries! I was expecting roughly $100 more, so that's perfect." I was incredibly shocked when I got to the front desk and had a $475 bill. FOR NOT EVEN A CUT OR FOR FULL COLOR. This wasn't even in the REALM of what one would expect - even at an expensive salon!! At checkout, I was also quoted the wrong price twice and assumed it was a mistake. I called the front desk mngr, then was referred to the mngr, & then owner, and while the owner was the most kind to me, after I followed up with her after she forgot to call back, she told me her mngr couldn't refund or credit me, which I know wasn't true I was told they would "fix my hair" which is also still multiple colors (despite paying almost $600!!) but that they couldn't do any services like color to fix it - they could only tone it. So insane. I am so upset this ended this way as I truly wanted to come back. But I do not want another girl be ripped off like I was. I've never met such a rude managerial team (with the exception of my stylist and the owner who were the only ones respectful towards me), and SUCH deceptive practices. I wish there was a business body I could report this experience to, but unfortunately it was all verbal communication, so it would not be worth the fight and even MORE exhaustion from this experience. In addition to paying nearly $600, I asked for my hair to be the color of the lightest portions so it'd all be blonde and even. I walked out with the top of my hair being completely different from the middle and bottom (the pics are dark). Yet I can't go back to get the color fixed as that would be a separate "service." I walked in & out within the appt time (it did take 25 extra minutes) of my original appointment, which was the initial expected allotted time for the original $200 service that I paid $475 for. It's not even as if they spent an insane amount of extra time on me for an ABSOLUTELY INSANE price, and yet now they dont have the ability to recolor. I feel cheated to, lied to, and deceived. P.S.: They may respond and note that part of my service was paid through Classpass. This is true - its how I found the salon. Yet this is a complete irrelevant and moot point, as they still got paid the full $. I even offered to pay in a different method, I would have been willing to pay in cash as the payment method didn't matter to me, I just had that credit - the problem at hand is the fact that I confirmed my price multiple times & then it drastically changed at checkout. read more

Smitten has an overall good rep but I left this salon in tears and no one was willing to remedy it. When I booked my appointment I made sure to tell the receptionist that I have very thick and very long hair. She said she would put this in my notes and give me extra time at the chair. I only went in for a wash/cut/style. I really liked the overall cut, however, the hairdresser then blew my hair out straight with the blow dryer and when she was finished she informed me that she would not have time to give me waves because my hair was so long and so thick. She said I needed a longer appointment time. I informed her that I told them that when I scheduled and they said they would accommodate. She said sorry but they didn't and she needed to get to someone else's coloring but that she would make sure they would put it in the notes for next time. I was so disappointed. My hair is naturally very wavy and when it's blown out without being styled I look like a chia pet. She didn't even offer to run a flat iron through it. I had to go home and style it myself after paying full price and not receiving something that was included in said price. If I knew that she was not going to have time to style my hair I would have asked her to just put leave-in conditioner in and I would have let my hair dry naturally, but she did not give me any indication that she would not be able to finish my hair until after she blew it dry. When I went to pay I told them what happened (that I called and told them about my hair length and quality and they did not give me enough time at the chair) and they said sorry and gave me free samples (which were ironically for hair that is dyed/colored - my hair has never been colored or highlighted so I couldn't even use them). Obviously an appropriate remedy to the mistake they made would have been to offer to have me come back for just a wash and style since they didn't do that at the appointment that I paid for. But they didn't. I'm still so disappointed about this. I was supposed to go back in December but I canceled because when I told them what happened the last time I was there they said they knew but again, did not offer any solutions. I spent $500 on a trim and balayage color from a sr. Stylist (Maria). The balayage turned out to really be just typical highlights (that resulted in a blanket color in the front instead of threaded color) that failed to blend the gray and my request for money pieces was ignored. It looked okay at first but damaged my hair badly and even after using all the most expensive products is still just a terrible pile of frizz, 5 months later. I contacted the owner (Lisa) a week or so after to try to help as I needed to go on an intl business trip and she emailed me a condescending note with no offer to help despite my saying that I was really trying to establish a longer term relationship with the salon. For that amount of money you'd think they'd be pros and want to keep their clients. read more

I came across Melanie Kate and I knew she'd be perfect for my blonde balayage/highlights and gloss. I'm an extreme control freak about hair and have left countless appointments in tears, so when I say five stars I mean five stars! And the salon is absolutely adorable and chic. I just moved from Nashville where I had severe attachment to my former stylist for years and Melanie Kate listened to exactly what I wanted, and even perfected the ways I wanted to change and enhance my old hair. I've already gotten compliments from several people and it's been barely 24 hours. My next appointment is booked and I am so glad that I found her and Smitten. While I don't think they are necessarily doing their best at social distancing (mostly while sitting under the heaters) - I did for the most part feel relatively safe. First and last time here. Needed a cut and full highlights. The receptionist said all the stylists are experts in color so I booked with the next available stylist - Melia. She was sweet and friendly. I showed her pictures of a cut and color I had that I liked. Said I wanted something bright for the summer. Prefer cool blonde over warm caramel colors. Wanted a lot of dimension so lowlights and highlights. What I got: she put in a caramel glaze after foil highlights. I ended up with brownish highlights that were darker than the blonde highlights already in my hair. I came back to have it corrected/brightened - I wanted blonde highlights. I now have 3 giant blonde chunks in my hair on either side and only in the front. I asked and paid for full highlights. To top it off, Karima, my shampoo lady, got water, shampoo, and glaze/toner in my left ear every single time. I told her and she just said she can't help it. Offered me cotton to put in my ears. Really? Posted is the pic of the previous cut and color I had and liked. Also posted are pics of what I actually got. Finally, she did almost all of her cutting on dry hair and didn't even out layers on both sides. Also cut with my hair parted on the side instead of in the middle. It's a nice looking salon. Sooo I am a client to Jade. Love her ! I've done a review before if you're interested this is meant to be an update. I called literally just now had a question for Jade. She knows me. I've gotten my hair done with her few times. I had one question ! No consultation needed. Whomever answer which I should have gotten her name stated she was the owner. "At my salon" her exact words that tells me she saying she's the owner "we don't allow stylist to be on the phone since they are busy all day - I can see about your question and call you back or answer it for you" I said " well how are you gonna answer it if you don't know me ? Or my hair ? " when I first asked for Jade I even asked to leave a message and get a call back. Simple question - i rather speak Directly with her. What's the issue ? I've never heard of non sense like this? Why because it's a salon in boujee Alexandria ? I'm confuse. I love Jade and this had nothing to do with her just the entitlement of said person. I honestly just hung up after hearing all that. If she was the owner this isn't customer service 2 mins of her wouldn't hurt her working and would have gotten me to make an app and spend the ridiculous amount of money I come in here and spend. I landed on Melanie Kate's Instagram, saw her work (especially with blondes) and booked my appointment. She's done more for my hair in the last year, than my other stylist did over a few years! During my first appointment, I showed her pictures of what I wanted, it was super helpful (and important) that she set realistic expectations for my hair as we worked towards the blonde that I wanted. Not only is she great at what she does but she's also super sweet and fun to chat with during the appointments! I am not kidding when I say I don't write bad reviews. My goal is actually to only write positive ones to help businesses if they've done a great job. When I first left Smitten Salon a couple of weeks ago, my hair looked phenomenal. I got a ton of compliments and felt so confident. I had been getting blonde highlights for a long time, and started not liking them anymore due to fading after about a week. So I decided to go back to being dark. I'm not sure what they put in my hair, but after only a few days, a huge chunk of the left side of my hair was blonde, while the other side had one streak of blonde and the rest was brunette. It looked (and still does) like Cruella Deville's hair. It also felt extremely damaged and now feels like straw- and I use professional grade hair products, silk scrunchies, not many heat products, and if I do, I use a professional grade heat protector. I reached out kindly to the owner to request a refund given that it lasted no more than 4 DAYS! I was told they do not offer refunds but that they would happily fix my hair for me. Being honest with them and saying I was uncomfortable getting my hair fixed at the same salon that so badly messed up my hair 2 weeks ago, they still wouldn't offer any money back. They were unapologetic- I expected at least a little sympathy after sending photos of my hair. Please avoid this place. I paid over $500 for hair that looks horrible, and not to mention feels like straw due to damage that was caused. *They will likely respond to this review saying that I was blonde for years and that's why the color didn't hold. You guys, that is not true. I have spoken with several hair experts after this experience and was told that it should have lasted 8 weeks at a minimum. They will also say that I was offered a consult to get it fixed. That is true, but I am not risking it. I feel totally scammed and now have to spend hundreds more on getting it fixed at a friend's salon recommendation. I will never be back and will be letting my friends know to avoid. read more

My experience with this salon was stellar- Reluctant to try a new salon, I discovered the salon through instagram - where several stylists posted modern cuts and styles. The booking procedure was smooth, requires credit card. The ambiance at the salon is pleasant - once you get in you're surrounded by energetic staff, eager to accomodate you while you wait your turn. The stylist who cut my hair, Ashley, listened to me and cut my hair the way I wanted. (I only wanted an inch or two off / plus trimming my layers) She gave me styling tips and showed me how much she was cutting throughout.
