Just a 20 bill was all that was needed to trim and wash my thick and FULL head of 3c hair. When I walked in with my fro, Hee kept saying OMG you have a lot of beautiful hair. She was excited to work with the hair I hate to style. Hee was very gentle during the washing process. Her hands... yes lawd, this Korean knew how to massage my scalp with enough pressure to put me to sleep. Not once but yes.. twice! This made my first time experience a calming one. To top that off, she extended her skill by giving a 2 minute neck massage before going back to the styling chair. I enjoyed my experience here and if ever in town again, I'll surely return to this quaint 3 chair salon. For those of you wondering, why I only gave 4 stars: I had to ask for a cold water rinse when rinsing my conditioner (my preference to help keep a shine to my hair). Secondly, I prefer a stylist to comb my hair during the conditioner phase while at the bowl. Another request where most stylist would do that automatically. TIPS: - very convenient Metro ride. Shop is near the exit of the train. No outside entry which was nice. Go LEFT once up the escalator. (NOTE: Shops are on both sides). Again, salon is on the LEFT when exiting the Metro. - salon is only one train stop away from Pentagon City Metro stop. A very short walk to the station from the Army Navy Drive (Pentagon) area. - Crystal City shops near the salon have anything you need if traveling by train without a vehicle. For unfortunate reasons I find myself in the Washington DC Metro/Virginia area for a while. Of course I need some pick me up time, so I search for (and specifically) dominican salons. Image Hairstylists pop ups first, and the reviews were pretty much consistent in the good/excellent ranges. So I make an appointment and go there. First of all, these ladies are NOT dominican so am not entirely sure why they would pop up when am looking for dominican salons. I actually heard one of them say they're from China. I take a deep breath and let them work on my natural curly hair. She then brings out some really small rollers, and I immediately knew something was wrong. Those are not going to work on my long hair. Usually, my dominicans back home use rollers triple the size of those, and am still left with some damp hair. She asks if I want a blow out and I say "yes please". She proceeds with a very unknown technique for me, and am at the verge of a mental breakdown. She's drying my hair, but she's not brushing it, and now I look like Mufasa from the Lion King. I pray "Jesus take the wheel and control of the situation" and the lady keeps saying "relax, don't worry", to which I reply "am really trying to". I don't even want to look in the mirror....and in comes Ms. Kim. She starts working on my tresses and BOOM, magic happens. My hair looks fabulous and I have to admit I was wrong to worry. As a matter of fact, several other yelpers (mostly latinas and african americans) had praised Kim and the other stylists, so why was I freaking out, right? Now, price-wise I felt robbed. I ended up paying twice as much what I pay for the same job back home $75.00 to be exact. But hey, I needed a nice blow out and I got one. Moving forward I will make 100% sure I get my hair done before leaving Orlando. But for a quick fix in this area...I now know of a place. read more

The reviews don't lie... these ladies can work magic with all hair types and textures. Very impressive. I go to Hee. She talked me into trying to go natural, so I am ~5mo without a perm now. I am hoping it pays off for the health of my hair. In the meantime, she does these beautiful blowouts. If I had one critique... I want more of a deep conditioning. But all of my appointments have been on time and I generally have no complaints. Oh yeah and this place is located in the underground crystal city tunnels. read more

Image Hairstylists brings a close-community like feel to Crystal City in its shop. The employees are very affable with the customers and each other. Though the shop isn't very big or open, it is quite ergonomic for its patrons. Good customer service, and pretty short wait time. The shop remains open past 5, so perfect when you're just getting out of work. They accept walk-ins too! The cost for a hair cut (men's at least) is $25 which is slightly on the pricier side (I think) for a haircut in the area, but it was quite well done! Very stylish! Very hard to find someone who actually knows what a good haircut looks like and tries to achieve it. Lol. My hairstylist (Kim) was a very nice lady who really put focus and effort into her work. If I was unsure of where my haircut was going, she would stop and offer up some suggestions which turned out great! After my cut, she also shampooed my hair so the annoying bits of hair that stick to your head are mostly washed away. Again, great service! Kim did a great job on my hair. I had natural hair and was having a lot of trouble managing it, so after a while I decided to relax my hair. I called early on a Monday morning and Kim was able to get me in 30 mins later. She was very nice and got my hair done very quickly. $110 and I got my hair relaxed, washed and blowed out, trimmed and flat ironed. I was really satisfied with my hair afterwards. She even gave me recommendations on how to help my hair grow and keep it healthy while it's relaxed. read more

This was my first time visiting. The experience was amazing. My appointment was with Hee. When I arrived, she asked me where I parked. I told her on the street. She walked with me to the car and rode with me to the appropriate parking garage. She didn't want me to pay for street parking when garage parking was free and more convenient. I was apprehensive b/c I have 4c natural hair. She exceeded my expectations. She was extremely gentle. She washed, conditioned and blow dried my hair like a pro. I go here to get my natural hair straightened. I have a very tight curl pattern. I usually wear my twa. I was surprised by the number of women of color in the salon every time I pass by so I figured I'd try it one day. I get it blow out with a blow dryer then straightened. I was most worried it wouldn't be up to par but my hair is silky smooth and shines so nicely and its bouncy! I love this salon. MK is fantastic. I recommend making an appointment early in the morning on a weekday. I try to go back every two weeks. Oh my hair did revert back with no heat damage. read more

At first, the decor of the salon my throw you off (thinking bubble gum pink) but once you walk in the door, you're greeted by Kim - the owner - and a team of talented stylists (think stylish Koreans). I walked in on a random Tuesday afternoon and had my hair cut and styled by Hee. I have thick, curly hair. She gave me a trim and did a fabulous job flat ironing my locks. Yes! This was a really good experience! I would recommend this salon to anyone with any hesitation about going in. Go in! My first clue would have been when a patron recognized I was just a new customer and offered her own unsolicited praises about the salon. Then the proof came when I walked out. I was an extremely satisfied customer. Kim's warm hospitable customer service made me feel very comfortable and welcomed. I had just arrived in town and my hotel room was not ready so I had some time to waste. I didn't have a scheduled appointment when I just walked in. She was happy to take me in, do my 4c type hair and get me out in a reasonable amount of time. She does all types of hair! She calls it 'International hair'. Omg these ladies are amazing! I walked in with a head full of unruly kinky natural curls and walked out with shiny, bouncy light tresses. My stylist was very gentle with detangling, she didn't scorch my hair with the blow dryer and took her time to make sure I got exactly what I asked for. I went to this salon for many, many years. I mean YEARS, close to 7 or 8. For the longest time this place was where I spent my entire Saturdays. Especially in my early twenties, when I all I did was go out that Saturday night! :) Hee is a fantastic stylist with a heart of gold. No matter what she does to your hair, she makes it look fabulous. She made sure that my hair did not have a relaxer too often, and would monitor when I needed the various treatments. When I went to her, my hair was in the best condition it had ever been. So why did I stop? My biggest con with this place is that Hee consistently overbooked. Over time, as she became more popular the wait became significantly longer. Overbooking is an understatement. Sometimes the wait was in excess of 2 hours. It got to the point where my appointment really meant nothing. I would just show up and wait. None of the other stylist were very good at doing black hair. Though I have never gone to her, Kim- the owner- is also a stylist and from my observations is not very good with the younger more contemporary look. She is very good at wedding up-dos. The stylist in the other two chairs came and went over the years so I can't speak to who is there now. I made the switch about 8 months ago. To be honest, I have yet to find a salon that takes care of my hair the way Hee does. And now, my hair has broken off so much from damage. I am actually strongly considering going back. My only other cons: Location: it is sort of hard to get to by car with limited parking. Hours: fairly common, but no Sunday hours seem a little inconvenient. If you are willing to put up with the wait, then I would recommend Hee at this salon. p.s. I am unable to go during the week, so I never once went any other day than Saturday. So, I cannot speak of the wait times outside of Saturday. read more

I started going to this salon about six months ago and I love it! My hair stylist is Hee. My neighbor recommended the salon to me after I told her the Dominican salon I had gone to for many years significantly increased their prices and made clients wait 1-2 hours. My neighbor goes to Kim, the salon owner, but she said she thought Hee styles and cuts hair better. Hee who is soft-spoken is meticulous but fast when she does hair. On my first visit I went from a shoulder length flip to a short tapered shag cut. After showing her a magazine photo, Hee cut and styled my hair just the way I wanted. She didn't apply a lot of heat (unlike the Dominican salon) nor did she use a lot of heavy, stiff hair products. My hair was shiny and healthy. The last time I went I asked for a relaxer and a trim. I was a little nervous if Hee knew how to apply a relaxer without burning my scalp. She did a great job. No burning, not even a tingle. The relaxer and trim was $20 less than what I was paying at the Dominican salon, plus at Image I was in and out in about 1 hour. The only issue is parking. To avoid paying for garage parking, arrive after 4pm on weekdays or go on Saturday when parking is free. It's also close to Crystal City metro (you don't even have to walk outside). read more

I had a haircut at Image Hairstylists this last Friday and not only I ended up with my hair much shorter that what I asked for, I also ended up with a terrible haircut, when I requested Kim to refund me for that haircut, I was told that it is against their policy to refund customers, needless to say I am frustrated because I basically paid $45 dollars to have my hair ruined, I am also angry to see how customers are treated at this establishment. I certainly advise anyone to find a better place to spend you money. read more

Told her I needed a trim, she gave me just that, a trim (finally a stylist that does what is asked). Blow dried and flatironed. Out in about 1.5 hrs. She applied a tiny bit of Paul Mitchell serum, my hair is shiny and has body. I will be going back. I've found my new stylist - thanks MK for my birthday blowout! read more

Awful service. Have no knowledge of chemical straightening of African hair type 4c nor dry scalps and hair. Then instead of acknowlwdging the wrongdoing, still argue with the client and try to uncomprehensively explain to me the texture of my own hair even when I have carried my own hair chemically straightened for more than 15yrs and had professional salonists chemically straighten it. I would never recommend Image Hairstylists to anyone. When I first sat down in the chair, I asked for a specific short, tapered, off-the-neck summery hairstyle. The stylist proceeded to give me a very slight trim and then started flat ironing my hair. I did not want or ask for this service but I was charged for it. I stopped him to ask if he was going to give me the short haircut I wanted. He trimmed my hair a little more and continued with the flat ironing. Kim, the owner, also tried to sell me a $150 flatiron by telling me that I needed it. When he finished, my haircut was clearly uneven and not at all what I had requested. It was closing time and I went to pay. Although the prices for a haircut were advertised in the $20-$30 range, they charged me $40. When I asked about this, they said that the prices advertised were for men's haircuts only. I understand that men's haircuts are less expensive but this was not mentioned on their price list so it seemed like false and shady advertising. Also, there were no men in the shop and the decor, magazines and setup suggested that women are the primary customers. Granted, a $40 haircut is not too expensive but the work was quick and shoddy and I left unsatisfied and a little offended. Worst of all, when I woke up the next morning, my hair was a huge frizzy mess. It has stayed this way no matter what I do. Before I had my hair cut, I explained its tendency to be a little puffy and asked specifically for a cut that would combat this. Instead, it's worse than it has ever been and even my normally complimentary husband agrees that I look awful. Overall, I would say that the service was poor, they were clearly trying to make the most money possible off of the customer (as opposed to provide a good service) and the prices listed are less than what you'll actually end up paying. read more

I love this salon! It's in a great location - Crystal City Mall - right at the Crystal City Metro. My hairstylist is Kim (the salon owner) and she is phenomenal! She does a fantastic job of relaxing my hair without over-processing it, and she gives me the best cuts! Even guys have complimented me on my hairstyles! Best of all, Kim's prices are very reasonable. My favorite part of salon visits - the short, shoulder massage Kim gives after she does your hair. You will love it! Caveat: the salon is extremely busy on weekends so it's best to make appointments during the week if you can. read more

These women really know how to do natural hair. I'm Dominican and my hair is very curly. I have been struggling for nearly 3 years to find a salon in DMV that met my NY Dominican hair salon standards. To my surprise, this little gem was hidden in the crystal city metro station-who would have thought? (*If you go by the address you will get lost, from within the metro before you get to the escalators to go above ground you will see a number of shops which is where this salon is located) Kim styled me and did a great job. I was nervous as I was going to a wedding but she did not disappoint. I was very impressed by outcome. She put conditioner on my hair for free and curled my ends with the flat iron at the end so it wouldn't be super straight. Total price $45. Although still pricey compared to my spoiled NY $25 salons, most places charge a fortune and still don't know how to deal with black or Dominican hair. I'm going back to Kim! read more

Kim is very nice and did a great job on my naturally curly hair. I had my hair washed, set and blow dried before it was flat ironed. I really appreciate her patience, especially during the detangling process (which I admit, I am not patient with myself) and that she didn't pass the flat iron across my hair haphazardly, but patiently flat iron my hair slowly.
