Good luck getting these guys out to your house when they say they'll be there. I call on the 14th of February around Noon to set up service for the 18th. I plan to stay home and take off work to get this done. Tech does not show up. I call. Tech tells me that the appointment was for the 14th and blames me. Tell me, how the hell can I book an appointment for 9-11 AM of a certain day, at NOON of the same day! Holy shit! Guy then blames me, and when asked to pull up the conversation, says he "doesn't have any record of what the other sales guy told you." They might be cheap, but methinks you get what you pay for. read more

I spent alot of time looking at different security service providers in central Texas and after some consideration, decided on Smith Thompson. After years of working with large, impersonal companies like Brinks and ADT, it was a breath of fresh air to find a smaller, established, reputable company based out of Dallas that provided monitoring services for $16.95/mo (same rate since 1978). The sales guy was knowledgeable but not pushy. When I called back a couple of weeks later, the same guy picked up the phone. We had Smith Thompson security install a new system in May. We also paid for monitoring service. We went out of town on vacation and our neighbors called us to tell us that our alarm was going off. It was loud and noisy for several hours. We even have a cell phone back up installed in case our home phone wires are cut by an intruder. The monitoring service never contacted me, my husband or, anyone on our phone contact list. When I notified Smith Thompson I spoke to a Mark ( MGMT) said that I was lying and wanted to know who set off my alarm? Mark was extremely rude and does not know the meaning of GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. I told him it did not matter who set off the alarm. THE BIG PROBLEM IS THAT NO ONE AT THE MONITORING SERVICE RESPONDED TO THE ALARM. We will certainly cancel our contract as soon as we return back home to Allen. read more

I think they service is very cheap I got it and they never called me back when the alarm went off for over 3 months. They kept talling me that it was my problem. Finally, they come to my house to look at it after calling for 5 days and they said it got fixed. The alarm went off again that week and they still never called. I went with a bigger company who told me that the equipment Smith thompson used was very cheap and they monitoring is also very poor. i am sure now that cheapest isn't the best!!! read more

Watch out for over-billing. They will quietly continue to monitor your home even if you're on a yearly plan...and then bill you for it. I view these companies as living off pennies from customers..."it states on the top right hand corner of every invoice..." Well, I used to pay you yearly so I don't have to read every freaking invoice! Lost a customer for life. Nowadays, you have to make it easy for customers to do business with you. read more

My technician Justin was fantastic. He talked me through the equipment that I would need, tried to get me the best deal, and spent a lot of time going over how to arm and disarm the alarm and all the different settings. Unfortunately my fire alarm already went off due to construction and I immediately received a call from Smith Thompson to make sure everything was okay and to let me know the fire department was already notified and on their way (I did feel like an idiot knowing they came out to my place bc of dust!). I've been a customer since March 2012 when I moved into my townhouse. Smith Thompson had great reviews on Angie's List and a special offer of a few months off for a year long contract. Set up was easy. It's a wireless system. I've had no problems setting and using the alarm system in year one. You must register your system with the City of Houston and pay an annual fee (we didn't have this fee up in Ohio - but I can see why police need to track all systems). If you own a townhouse with a rear yard door, I recommend asking for two Smith Thompson monitoring yard signs and sticking one by each door. This is a huge deterrent to thieves. Don't forget about doors other than the front one. read more

The changeover was very easy. The technician switched out the wireless dialer in about 10 minutes, tested the system and was finished in about 20 minutes total. Beware of smith Thompson if they come out for service to fix an existing system they will automatically sign you up for monitoring service and if you don't disconnect by written notice they will continue to bill you forever. If you contact them and try to get them to adjust the bill for service you never wanted they will tell you that without sending written notice of cancellation they cannot do anything for you and the amount is still due! I apologize to the owner of the location and changed my rating, his staff was friendly and helpful, the install went well and they used mostly the existing equipment which saved me Money. My issue is with corporate who said a call was not sufficient and that written notice was required to end service. read more

They used the existing ADT equipment and it didn't cost us a thing. We saved money and loved how extremely responsive ST was. I've had Smith Thompson security for several years now. They replaced a system that was being monitored by ADT over my landline phone line, at $31.95/month. Their technician came out and replaced the main board in my (very old) system, reinstalled everything, added 3 new keypads, added a remote key fob, and most importantly, added a cell-phone based monitor for about... well, I've forgotten the total price but it surprised me how low it was, considering all the work he did. Their monitoring price is about $16.95/month, but I pay annually and actually get 12 months worth for 11 months of payment, so even better deal. When I've had a couple of accidental trips of the alarm, they've called as expected and took care of the trouble. Finally, to put them over the top, I called and asked to be allowed to install my own new keyfob that I got from Amazon. Instead of demanding a "truck roll" and a service fee, they helped me reset my system so I could install the new keyfob myself. At this point it was time to give them a full 5 stars here... what a great company! read more

This company came recommended to me by my realtor. I have been extremely satisfied! Their technician came to the house and helped me set up a new alarm code in an existing system. He also verified sensors and left a card that gave me instructions on how to change codes, arm and disarm options, etc... since having the system, I have had two accidental activations.
