Way Past Due for a Review, But.... I've been taking my fur babies, Marty & Luci, to Smelly Dog for 7 + years and I've always had a pleasant experience. They have always had outstanding communication in answering calls, returning vm's, texting when ready for pickup after a groom. I like that they seem to be able to fit in my fur babies, sometimes on short notice. I will highlight my most recent experience in taking our newest addition, Lulu, for her second groom. Lulu had one previous groom here when she was 5 months old and this would be her second groom at 6 months old. We were unsure how she would react in coming in for the groom, since I know she wasn't easy on her first go around. But, to our delight she was wagging her little nub of a tail and excited, and I relieved. We weren't able to achieve a little top knot sitch for her on her first groom because she couldn't sit still enough. This was something I really hoped we could achieve on this 2nd groom. So, when Ty greeted us we went over length, face shape and a top knot, please! Ty was very warm, patient and most importantly calm cuz our little Lulu can so fidgety and high energy! We felt we left her in the best hands, but due to her high energy and degree of difficulty sometimes with being still, still unsure of what to expect. When I received a ready for pickup text notification, we headed over to pick up our lil fur baby. When she was brought out and we laid eyes on her, I was beyond happy to see Ty's work of art! She looked absolutely precious, top knot and all! We couldn't have been more grateful to all the staff, and it's reassuring that Lulu, telling us with her little nub, feels the same read more

My previous post follow up with pictures after we left vet today. They had to shave him down, give him antibiotics and an opioid prescription. Owner staging these are old sounds. He had skin lesiona that were bursted when she groomer him. I'm so over the lack of accountability. Owner is "telling me" these were old scabs. My dog had raised skin tag not scabs. These scabs came from those tags being cut and after a few days trying to heal. The same pictures I submitted to animal cruelty. One star only earned by the owner. Groomers were great every time, which is the reason I keep going back. However, I am sick and tired of being sick and tired of their poorly designed and glitchy website. I don't even want to begin talking about those issues. What took me over the top today is the fact that the owner has not repaired/replaced the card reader for payments for at least a year. Unacceptable - both for customers and staff! Takes extra time and makes line ups for pick up that much longer. Inability to book an appointment with exact services via the website, having to call in for that, then receiving a confirmation email listing wrong services ... complete confusion, even the groomer didn't know what she was supposed to do (she did the right thing, thank goodness) simply because whatever was entered in the system at drop off was not what system sent in a confirmation email. Too much confusion, website booking being glitchy, a year old issue with payment machine ... taken together, convinced me to look for another place. I love the staff and my pup was taken care of well ... but those frustrations attached to every single visit? Doesn't the owner care that hers is the only business that doesn't have a working payment machine? No thank you, not any more. read more

We've been bringing my dog here for the past two years and have been consistently pleased with every grooming experience! As you can see from the photos, we've experimented with a few different styles, and each one has turned out great. Whatever shampoo they use smells amazing and keeps him smelling fresh for days. I've been told he can be a bit tricky to groom especially around his face, but the team has never complained -- and his face always looks even and well-trimmed, unlike some past experiences we've had elsewhere. The online booking system is super convenient and they're always quick to confirm or respond to new requests. We just hit our 10th visit and got our 11th groom free thanks to their punch card -- which was a nice little bonus! Update response: Thank you for responding. You are correct, we did receive a refund, but it came through as an email labeled as an invoice, so we initially assumed it was just a receipt for the services. We do appreciate the refund. However, neither my husband nor I ever received an email or phone call explaining what happened or outlining the options you mentioned here. More transparency and communication from the beginning would have gone a long way in resolving this situation. We do appreciate the refund and eventual follow-up. Original post: We've brought our dog here several times with no issues and even requested the same groomer -- but this last visit was a nightmare. None of our booking instructions were recorded, the 2-3 hour appointment turned into 5 hours with no updates, and we had to call to find out what was going on. When we finally picked him up (after paying before even seeing him), his cut was drastically shorter than requested, uneven, and full of clipper marks -- some spots were shaved down to the skin. We have also noticed changes in our dogs temperament since the grooming and we are concerned that he experienced something traumatizing. We've emailed multiple times asking for an explanation and have gotten zero response. We have been boarding Buddy for over two years at Smelly Dog. He requires medicine twice a day which is why we choose to board. The staff at Smelly Dog always remember who Buddy is when we arrive. Even though he is a little high strung, they always have the patience to care for him. They provide his medicine and follow our instructions. He always comes home peacefully, almost never anxious. Trusted a family friend who takes their doodle there and immediately regretted it upon pick up. I had asked for a teddy bear head with a summer cut body. Groomer completely ignored and shaved my entire dog down unevenly, nicked his legs, left ear wax all over his inner ears, didn't trim his nails, and the worst part was that his temperament changed like he was traumatized. Well, my opinion of Smelly Dog is pretty much in line with alot of other reviews, dealing with poor customer service. I have taken my pitbull to this place multiple times for the self service dog washing stations. Not that they are the greatest, but I can't find a closer business to where I live, so I go here because I don't want to drive any further. I asked the girl at the front counter as she was walking by the dog washing area if I could get some conditioner for my dog, as I was in the middle of the wash already. I was just expecting her to say sure and then grab some for me right quick. Instead, she simply said they didn't have any. I'm sorry, what? The reason for your entire business being in operation revolves around washing and grooming pets. I also thought that the girl saying they were out of the product was odd because I was looking, literally in front of my face, at a whole area of shelves on the wall that had several conditioner bottles on them in plain sight. Well of course I was irritated, but I was more confused by the whole situation, especially when my daughter, who was there with me, told me that the stingy staff member and another staff member looked at each other and smirked after I was told they had no conditioner for me to use. I wasn't even allowed to purchase it! I'm not sure what the deal is with Smelly Dog and dog conditioner, but apparently they think it is a premium product instead of a regular staple in a pet grooming facility. Sometimes they want to charge me for conditioner, other times they just give it to me, and this time they had it and flat out refusedto provide it, even after saying that I would pay for a squirt or two because I was already halfway through washing my dog. If they really didn't have any conditioner in stock, (which they did), why would they not say something BEFORE I start the wash? That's like going to the hair salon and halfway through getting your hair all sprayed down and soaking wet, the stylist tells you they don't have anything to wash your hair with, or they DO, but aren't going to give it to you. Is there some sort of conditioner shortage that I'm not aware of in the area? Are suppliers targeting small pet grooming businesses by holding back the supply of a very common, expected, even necessary product such as dog conditioner? Is this a conspiracy? After finishing washing the shampoo off of my dog, and watching the two girls make faces at each other, and after they decided that their conditioner was too good for my dog, so much so that they even refused an offer of payment for it, I took my dog to another business down the road and gave my dog a proper bath. And I even got to use some of that rare product, conditioner. Hassle free! I felt like I was in the twilight zone while in Smelly Dog. I felt as though maybe I were being Punked or something because of the blatant disregard the employees there had for following basic customer service etiquette, ultimately costing them a pretty regular customer. Better watch out Smelly Dog, you guys are racking up the bad reviews, and rude staff members will run even the most loyal customers away. Please get over yourself, and find a new supplier for conditioner. read more

DO NOT BRING YOUR DOODLE HERE!!!!! I had the most traumatic experience at Smelly Dog, and if you LOVE your pooch, you'd avoid this place. Unfortunately, our groomer of many years retired and left the state, so we had been searching for a new spot to try out. We decided on Smelly Dog because of the proximity to our home, oh boy, was that a mistake. Upon arrival, I consulted with the groomer and provided specific instructions as to the cut I was looking for. The groomer expressed no concerns with my requests. However, when I picked up my dog, she was unrecognizable. It was THE MOST HIDEOUS grooming, ever. My baby was shaved to her bare skin. I hate it so much, I cannot look at her without dropping a tear, and that's sad. Later that afternoon, we arrived home and as we're getting settled, and I observe my dog limping. Upon further examination, I realize that she has a huge gash in her back leg and blood is gushing everywhere. My heart dropped. I frantically called the salon, again and again, to no avail. Almost an hour later, I eventually speak with the receptionist and demanded a phone call from the owner immediately. Speaking with the manager was pointless and a complete waste of my time. She offered tons of excuses and not a single solution. I did, however, find out that the manager knew my dog's leg was bleeding, as the groomer notified her of the incident. This fact made me even more furious because at this point, I felt like they were trying to cover up the incident. I would have expected a phone call to let me know what occurred, and at the bare minimum, a briefing of the incident when I picked up my pet from the salon. I requested a full refund, in which she denied. However, she agreed that the haircut was awful, and offered to personally fix it. But what is there to fix, as my dog was shaved to her bare skin. See before and after photos, along with the gash in my dog's leg. If you love your pet, DO NOT put them, nor yourself through this trauma. AVOID this place like the plague it is. read more

I have taken my miniature schnauzer to Smelly Dog for a couple years now. But after my last experience, having my dog groomed, I will no longer use this company. I requested to have my schnauzer trimmed, and explain to the groomer that I only wanted a quarter of an inch removed from her legs. This groomer practically shaved my dog as well as cut off her mustache! So if you decide to use Smelly Dog to have your dog groomed, do not let Sue groom your dog. read more

Doodle owners... BEWARE!!! My boyfriend and I took our 10 month old goldendoodle puppy, Waffles, to Smelly dog yesterday for a full groom. This was our first time ever grooming here, but we decided to give it a try because our normal dog groomer was booked for a couple of weeks. Some backstory, Waffles had surgery a little over two weeks ago. We were aware of matting under her neck/chest due to wearing the cone and surgical onesie. We acknowledged this with the groomers from the start stating that we were fine with them cutting out the matts under the chest as we knew they would probably need to. Our ONLY request was to leave the rest of the puppies fur long! We have a second doodle that matts after swimming etc, and she has been to our normal groomer multiple times with a matted area that they will cut out and blend the other long fur to cover the shaved area (looks great!) and therefore I know it is very possible to do. When my boyfriend arrived at Smelly Dog, my boyfriend spoke directly with the groomer (Susan?? I believe) giving very specific directions on the rest of the bodies fur length. She was very adamant to him that she needed a nice "summer cut". He told her at the time no and we wanted her to remain fluffy. At this time he left. A couple hours later he received a phone call stating the dog was "severely matted" all over. I know for a fact this was simply false, completely false. I am the first to admit when my dogs fur is matted and take prompt responsibility to get them in with a groomer. This statement was a complete lie. sure, there may have been a random knot or two not matts that the groomer could have easily taken scissors too and cut out. Again, something a trained doodle groomer would understand how to do and blend in with the rest of the cut. Upon arrival to pick up the puppy, they brought her out completely SHAVED. When I say shaved, I mean less than an 1/8 inch of fur on the dogs body. We were literally questioning if the dog brought out was even our dog. This is quite literally the WORST doodle grooming job I have ever witnessed. I am disgusted by the lack of respect the groomer had for our wishes. I firmly believe this groomer (Susan) had decided from the moment her dropped her off that she was going to shave the puppy regardless. I am guessing out of pure laziness. also, goldendoodles have double coated fur that is never meant to be shaved this short. There coat is how they regulate there body temperature and protect themselves from the sun and any trained doodle groomer should know that. It is also known that many times after a shave this short, the fur never grows back as long or the same texture (you better hope this does not happen). Not to mention the fact we paid $110 (WORST $110 WE HAVE EVER SPENT) for a total chop job and quite frankly I am not even sure if she was given a bath. There is zero scent of any shampoo. They also put tiny rubber band bows in the her ears??? These literally caused matts in the dogs ear. Seems extremely odd you decided to shave our dog due to matts and then thought it would be a good idea to but actual rubber bands in her ears???? Sadly we drop our pets off at groomers putting our full trust in them to respect and provide what we as dog parents want. Imagine bringing your child to a hairdresser, asking for a trim, and receiving back a child with a bald head. We will never be coming back to this establishment and I will make sure to steer every doodle owner away from them at all costs (unless you like a shaved doodle). First time trying them and I was not really impressed. The girl working there the afternoon of May 11th was very nice however after I told her it was our first time in she placed me at a self wash bin that had a damaged hairdryer. The water never got warm like they claimed it would and there wasn't many suds. The nozzle of the dryer was being held together (sort of) with duct tape. There was a split to most of the air was going out the break and not the nozzle. My pup was shivering from the cold water and when trying to dry her I had to grip the hose and nozzle in a special way to get air out dryer. I did mention this to the girl working and she said ya my manager is trying to fix it. What was interesting is there were 2 other bins to put us at but she chose the broken one. Wow. This place has deteriorated significantly in the last year. We were attracted by the self-wash option. It's a brilliant service to offer and I've referred several friends. The staff is friendly, but can only apologize for the facility's deficiencies: the complete lack of warm water (it was cool and my dog AND I were shivering). This is unacceptable. From a business prospective, I understand cheaping out on the shampoo quality they provide (won't even sud); I just bring my own. But the lack of warm water over my last 3-4 visits has turned me away for good. read more

Ive been going to smelly dog for many years now. To buy toys, self dog wash ( helps out your back so much and reasonably priced), buying toys, etc. They are always so welcoming. My dogs especially love their bakery goods. This is why i thought this would be the perfect place to buy my babys final cake since she was going to be euthanized the following day. Unfortunately they did not have cakes readily prepared which is understandable because they make everything so fresh. The worker i forgot her name! she quickly found a solution for me and they had cupcakes in the freezer! She was so kind on a day like that and i will forever be so grateful for her generosity because she gave it to us on the house!
