It probably was cooked well done but it still was juicy enough for me It's decent size, cooked well, nice toppings, and the bun was good. The fries were well seasoned and tasted good. But, for me, the texture was slightly off. It wasn't bad but just wasn't something I was particularly fond of. For a fast casual place, this isn't a bad option. Until recently I had never been to Smashburger and I can't say that I didn't enjoy it but you know what, it's an expensive hamburger that is slightly above average. I wasn't blown away and considering I dropped nearly $20 on a double cheeseburger, fries and a small soft drink I'd consider the entire meal a moderate to poor value and the place, far grungier than I expected. I 100% feel that I've reviewed this place before and have distinct memories of taking pictures here. It's tough because you want to gobble it up right away. Oh well. I ate here the other day. I always find Smashburger to be on the greasier side. The floor here has a layer of grease, get ready to slide around. But what has me coming here once or twice a year is their Truffle Mushroom Swiss Burger with Egg. I'm not a huge burger fan but throw these two ingredients on top and I almost forget that I'm eating one. I only come here for this along with their delicious SmashFries so I can't comment on their other items. The meat is juicy and the bun is nice and soft. I've also had their Brussels sprouts and I found it awfully greasy. I didn't feel healthy eating them. Service here comes without a smile. After placing your order, they will give you a number to take to your table. One of the workers will come and bring your food to you. That also comes without a smile. They serve shoestring fries and by the time we got them they were cold and soggy. The burger patty is on the thin side but I did enjoy the chipotle style toppings. This location was very understaffed. Only one person in front to take orders and the money. The same person also packs and hands out all the take out orders, and answers the phone and takes phone orders....no wonder no one answered when I tried to call. No friendly greeting or faces on my visit. No one in the dining area cleaning tables. No napkins came with the food, and no napkins in stock in the beverage area. It was a chore to order, the print on the overhead sign is very small, and the cashier was not into giving options when ordering. I ended up with cheese on my single create your own burger, even though it was not requested. The dining area was not well lit and just not a friendly atmosphere to enjoy a meal. Slow crew that didn't seem like they've ever wanted to be there. The young man at the register wasn't rude, which made him the nicest person there. There was a small mixup during the initial order, but the receipt was correct, so I didn't worry. After returning from the bathroom, they had brought three of the orders, but not two of the fries and one of the burgers. No problem; we still have a table number so it should be coming out soon. Then, the other employee walked a burger and fries, and another basket of fries, past our table and to the table that ordered after us and announced the name of my burger to the guy who received it. I let that one go, because two baskets came up right after that. When those also went to the party after us, I had to walk up to her and show her the receipt. Everyone seemed perplexed. She also didn't say "sorry" or "I'll get right on that," she just walked back towards the kitchen. After another long wait, and baskets going to the party two-orders behind us, they finally brought two orders of fries. The employee didn't say a word. I had to ask to make sure the burger was still coming... Because... You know. After another wait, and the server bringing more baskets to a different table, we received the last burger. Again, not a word. No apologies or explanations. At least McDonald's workers seem successfully trained to pretend they give a crap. I wanted to add a star for the food at least being reasonably priced to their competitors and the fact that they have organic apple juice for kids, but since I can't leave a zero-star review, one star will suffice. The Wife Loves the place, me not so much. She usually has a classic, I went for a beef burger and a turkey burger, fixings varied. We also had orders of tater tots and sweet potato fries. The tots and fries were limp and uninspired. Instead of getting a turkey burger, both my burgers were beef. Meat quality is above your average fast food fare but, for the cost, nothing extraordinary. On the positive, we both like the char associated with the "smash" technic and the range of condiments make for some interesting taste experiences. Although the burger was good, I feel like you can get the same quality at Wendy's for a fraction of the price. I also got the "Big Smash" burger with fries and didn't exactly feel full after finishing. For nearly $10, there are many other burger chains that I would come back to before returning to Smash. In the last two months the service at this location has really deteriorated. I've visited this location three times, and each time it's been a huge hassle either to place an order, or get what you ordered. First, note that this location now refuses to take paper Smashburger coupons (in spite of the fact that weekly their corporate HQ keeps emailing them to me). Now they are promoting a couponless $4 triple-double burger. However, today when I visited and tried to order this burger, I was told by both the manager and the cashier that they won't allow you to customize the toppings. The manager explained, "This is now our signature burger. It's just too confusing for our cook staff to make it custom." She said this with a straight face. Really? One can go to McDonalds, Burger King, Wendys, Five Guys -- pretty much anywhere --- and find a kitchen that isn't stymied by a request "to hold the pickles and the lettuce." But at North Brunswick Smashburger, they admit it's too much for them to manage. I informed the manager I could go across the road and get whatever I wanted on a burger at Five Guys. She didn't seem to mind. So I did. As I left this Smashburger, I noticed that there was only a single customer in the place. I am in town on business, having driven down from Boston; staying at a nearby hotel, I wandered into the strip mall containing SmashBurgers - my first time ever eating at this chain. First off, signage was good; I've seen fast food places like this before: an order aisle where you pick up a menu & review it while waiting in line to order. Simple selection of burgers, some chicken sandwiches, salads & sides. The woman who took my order (same person both nights) was pleasant, articulate & efficient. Once the orders were taken, I never had to wait more than 5-6 minutes for it to arrive. Now, onto the food: last night, I got the New Jersey burger, sweet potato fries & veggie frites. The burger was super juicy & tasty, with a bit of crunch from the fried onions. Much better than I expected. Fries were also good - not dry nor too spicy. And even the string beans & carrot slices were decent - bit oily, but I felt that added to the flavor. Tonight I had the classic SmashBurger, a Cobb salad, plus the haystack onions. Loved those onions, crispy & full of flavor. Burger was good, but not as tasty as the Jersey one. Salad was better than expected - more than just salad greens, with a fried egg & good portion of real fried bacon. I ate every bit. This place is definitely on my "must return to" list for future travels in NJ. read more
