We had a 5-hour layover in Newark. We thought about grabbing lunch in the airport but at $23 for a personal pan pizza, it just made no sense. This was on a trip from Raleigh, North Carolina to Northern California, so it only made sense that if we were going to have pizza to actually do it right in New Jersey. So glad we did Mario's is a legit pizza spot. They sell by the slice and we could have easily just gone with some garlic nots and some slices to go. But the thing to know about legit pizzerias is they also are legit Italian restaurants with seating in the back. To the back! Tony, the owner was there and set us up with two large tables so we could spread out. We were super hungry so made sure we got a smaller pizza for the family to share, a green salad and some hot wings to whet the appetite as we were waiting on our food. Tony surprised us with an order of their bruschetta on the house. Omg. What's up balsamic reduction??! I would have taken a picture but that thing disappeared with the quickness. Even my son loved it and he's not one for tomatoes. The kids got sodas from the fridge but Tony knew what's up, and suggested a glass of wine for me and the hubs. Yes please. The food here is delicious. The people are down to earth and super friendly, and if you are looking for an intimate dining experience that won't break the bank hit up Mario's. My girlfriend and I couldn't find somewhere to eat, we were literally walking down the street and stumbled across this place. Vibes?? Off the charts, staff was super cool and accommodating. I had no idea what I wanted to get, they gave me a menu let me take my time. This is one of those times where I'm glad I listened to someone's recommendation rather than the rating status. I went with family and as an appetizer we got garlic knots and bruschetta. We also got a basket of bread. The bread was brought out right from the oven cause you can see the stream coming off it. Soft garlic bread and crispy crust. So yummy! As my entree, I got lobster ravioli with shrimp in vodka sauce. The raviolis were large in size stuffed with a good amount of lobster. I hadn't noticed because of all the sauce but there was a lot of shrimp! On top of that, it was a very good price. Shout out to Joe who took care of us and made sure we had everything we need. OMG !!! I am so glad I do not live nearby or even in the same state as this place. Our experience was out of this world amazing and the food was just behind it. My friend is a little bit of a regular in this place and took us over for lunch while we visited. Thank you for that experience !! The whole staff seemed happy to see us as we walked in and I know that is the same response they have for every customer. They are really happy to see every person who walks thru the door and are ready to feed you... like true Italians !! Joe took care of us, party of 5. It was a special occasion and wine was the first thing in the table and appetizers were already being worked on without us even asking for any of it... he just knew !! He was amazing !! I spend a lot of time in this neck of the woods birding the Elizabeth waterfront. A lot of amazing things can be seen here including the out of range Brown Pelican that spent several days here in December. Always been aware of Mario's and a couple of years ago, I met an employee who was fishing nearby. He said to give them a try. My son and I did the other day. Some seating in the front. Must be a dining room in the back because we kept wondering where the customers who were paying their bill were coming from. Anyway, we ordered a large pizza, half sausage, half pepperoni. Crust thickness can be varied according to desire. We had a regular pie. Our pie was ready in about twenty minutes and it was delicious. No skimping on the toppings here. Only one slice had an issue. My son picked it up and everything slid off. That means something. Someday, I'll figure out what. We finished the pie without incident. So, a nice place with friendly gals working the ovens. We were greeted with warm Smiles as soon as we walked in. Our server knew exactly what the two gentlemen in our party wanted and he was spot on. Seafood pasta with a spicy sauce- incredible. SO ARE THE PRICES whoa! 9.00 for a buffalo burger however they didn't even put buffalo sauce on it...then we're told it doesn't include French fries long story short this burger with fries came to 14.93...if your going to raise prices then raise the quality too!
