This was my first time at any Smashburger location, and I came away with a pretty average impression. The restaurants look nice and trendy, the staff are friendly, but I just was not that impressed with the burger. I got the big Carolina burger without the mayo, added mustard to make it a proper southern style. The flavor on the chili was a little bland and it kind of took over the burger on the whole. Wanting to try just the patty i broke off and cleaned off a chunk of the meat. It was pretty juicy, but didnt have a stand out flavor on its own. Kind of a let down overall. At a shade over 7 bucks, definitely not worth the price tag. My friend let me try a few of his fries, and I always like the shoe-string variety when I can find them. Crispy and hot. Thumbs up there. I had a peanut butter shake with my burger, and it was absolutely the highlight of the meal. Deliciously flavorful and creamy, lots of peanut buttery goodness. Overall: Okay food and terrible service. We walked in at 8:30 tonight (Wednesday) and immediately turned around because we thought the place was closed - most of the chairs were turned upside down on the tables and all of the floor mats were piled up by the register with a broom beside them. There was also no one at the register. We checked the time, thinking they must be about to close but, nope, close is at 10 pm so we went in. We stood at the register for a couple minutes without being greeted, and finally the woman standing by the heat lamps trying to figure out a pile of food and orders shouted that she'd be with us in a minute. A few minutes after that she finally came over, having not given any of the waiting people their food. I honestly have no idea what she was doing the whole time. We ordered and went to sit and found ourselves waiting again, for over 20 minutes for our food. I was sitting facing the registers and watched the only cashier walk to the food, look confusedly at the tickets, the screen, and the food over and over again and never deliver any food to tables or people waiting on to-go orders. At one point a customer waiting for his to-go order actually walked up and explained which order was his! During this time the cashier repeatedly asked questions of the two people working in the kitchen and both of them just shrugged every time she asked them something. There is some clear negativity here if employees aren't even willing to help each other. The food under the heat lamps continued to pile up and we continued to wait. The tables with chairs on them quickly became an issue as people kept coming in and had no where to sit. With only one person doing the registers and food running and to-go orders, there was no one to clean the few dirty tables. We snagged one of the last two tables available. Folks who came in after us either stood and waited or sat at dirty tables. I will say the burgers were good. I got the original and really liked the egg bun and crispy edges on the patty. However, the smash fries were not good. My husband's fries were soggy wet with grease and mine had maybe two that had any of the rosemary oil/seasoning on them. We ended up mixing the two batches together to make them palatable. I was excited to try this place but the overall carelessness of how it's run was really disappointing. read more

I stopped by for a bite after a business meeting. I was just wanting a quick salad. As I walked in I noticed how bright, open, and clean everything looked. The menu offered so much to choose from. I ordered the Baja Cobb salad, and I wanted to give the Rosemary fries a go, so I ordered a side of them too. Everything tasted Fantastic! They brought my salad as soon as I sat down at my booth, my fries came out minutes later.... the staff was friendly and attentive. I definitely recommend eating here! I've visited here twice since being in the Durham Chapel Hill area. The first time was fine. But not this time. I paid for an order at approximately 7:50p. It is now 8:17 and I still have not received my order. When I placed the order, I specifically requested FRESH fries and that they not be drenched in olive oil. They gave me the fries stale. She asked me if I was going to stand by the counter and wait or "move because other people need to order." It's now 8:21 and I still don't have my damn food. So then, my burger had been sitting so long that it was now cold. Asked for it to be remade. The same Black lady starts arguing with me from behind the counter and said that she was doing the best she could with NO people in the store. I asked for the manager but I'm def going to call her in the morning (someone names KP). I am absolutely not a hard person to deal with. I don't give people a hard time because I have worked in fast food before and understand that it can be annoying dealing with people and their BS over food. But at this point, I've been here approximately 34 minutes, waiting on a damn burger and fries. To say that I'm pissed is the understatement of the year. Folks have already come and gone. Very good burgers from a high quality "fast-food" chain. Even compared to all the fancy $8-10 burgers that I've had in the Durham/Chapel Hill area, these are fairly good and a nice value (a regular Smashburger is $4.99). Plus, our burger came out VERY quickly. What is also wonderful is that the burger can be customized with many different complimentary toppings, sauces, and buns. I ordered the rosemary fries (Smashfries) too, out of curiosity. Found out the hard way that rosemary on fries isn't really my thing - they tasted sort of funky. But the thin/tiny style they were cut in and fried was really nice. If I come back, I'm definitely going to try them them unseasoned. And I need to try the Haagen-Daz shakes - those sound awesome. In the entirety of the time that I've used this app, I've never actually submitted a review, but I guess there's a first time for everything. Where do I even begin? We placed our order and were told it would take 15 minutes. It took over an hour. It was only after we asked for a refund (a request that was blatantly ignored) that we actually received our food. We get in the car and realize that an item is missing, so we go back, get it, and leave. Once we're home, we unwrap our burgers, and it turns out that they added cheese and sauces that we SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED THEY OMIT DUE TO DIETARY RESTRICTIONS, which thereby made them inedible. The cherry on top of this shit sundae is that during this entire interaction, all we were getting from the man working expo was attitude. I work in food service and have for a long time. I know what it's like to be under pressure and to have orders back up. After waiting for nearly 10 minutes behind one family/receptionist while three to four unoccupied staff just watched me and five others in line, I was finally helped by someone. The whole time she was "helping" me, she was not paying attention, instead chatting with the other receptionist and the family ordering. Still not paying attention, she grabbed my receipt and turned to throw it away. I asked for the receipt, took it, and went to wait for my order. The next thing I know, she's yelling "OH, I KNOW you did NOT just snatch that receipt from me." I have no idea what's going on, and the other ten-ish customers in the store are also staring blankly. Then, all of a sudden, a male staff (whose back was turned during this transaction) gets up in my face and tells me, "the way you snatched that receipt from her was rude, so disrespectful, that was rude." At this point, I'm genuinely confused and, for some reason, even try apologizing to the man for the perceived front. Ironically, after calling me rude and disrespectful, while I'm attempting to apologize for something I didn't even do, he glares at me and turns his back on me and starts "whispering" about me to his coworkers. To top it all off, he prepared my to-go order and "accidentally" messed up my order. Embarrassingly unprofessional. When the store is usually empty, and there's numerous reports of awful customer service, you have to wonder if there's a correlation. This is my go-to spot for a quick but tasty burger in Durham. I have had nothing but good experiences with it. I think the chain qualifies as something you'd call fast-casual. But the way I describe it to friends is if you took your favorite fast food burger joint, such as Wendy's, and improved the service and ingredient quality. Everything appears to be cooked to order. In my opinion , it's a step above Steak N Shake, which seems to have a similar approach (though there are none of the latter chain here in Durham ) One thing I like about this place is that you can get a well-crafted and satisfying burger that's not trying too hard to overpower your taste buds. I feel like too many fast casual or sit down burger places are in an arms race to top the fattest, juiciest patty with an inordinate amount of toppings. You wind up with a gloppy mess that sends burger juice mixed with avocado streaming down to your elbows. While there are some specialty burgers here that seem a little busy, their mainstays such as the triple double are hearty without being a mess. And their fries are great. I walked up to the counter and read the menu while all the employees chatted. When I looked at one of them to place my order she said, "its going to be a while. We're doing shift change." I gave a 2 star review because the food tastes fine. This rating is based more on the service received. During my last visit here, been a couple of times, the service was fairly poor by the person taking our order. There was no smile or friendly greeting. As we approached to place our order I noticed you could download their app and get a discount (or a food item) just for downloading. So I downloaded and when we ordered I showed the code that came up. When she scanned the code it wasn't recognized in their computer. She did not offer assistance, call a manager, nothing. Just replied it wasn't good. I showed her the app, the sign and she basically said tough luck. No offer to comp it or do the right thing. Then the prices here... The burgers taste fine but I don't think they are worth the price at all! This place is expensive to go as a family for lunch. For 4 of us it was close to $50. Only reason I came back (my 2nd visit) was that my kids liked the place on the 1st visit and wanted to go again. We decided as a family that we will not be going back. There was another employee that when we were leaving came over to let us know she would clear the table, was very friendly - they should have had her at the register to take orders and this experience may have been a lot different - funny how a bad apple can give you such a bad taste for a place.
