Tasty milkshakes for $3.99?! What a steal! I was introduced to Cook Out by my Durham friends and was surprised at the quality of their food! For all the milkshakes, the consistency was great - thick and not overly icy. The chocolate malt was my fav with its strong chocolate flavors. The banana fudge featured actual banana chunks and chocolate fudge. It was initially hard to drink with the straw but better then it loosened up. The oreo espresso that my friend had was also solid, although I would have preferred just oreo and maybe a little bit more cookie bites. For non locals, the restaurant closes at 930pm but you can still order take out at their counter or drive through. Our food came out super quick and the staff was patient despite a line building up. read more

Gets the job done... Whenever I visit North Carolina every couple of years I always wonder if I still like Cookout as it was a staple during my college years. Then I visit, am underwhelmed of the obviously mostly fried to order from frozen menu, then I repeat the experience forgetting my last impression. Got a tray with a milkshake and an extra side of onion rings. The 'milkshake' was laughable as there was two sprinkles of topping blended in to call it a shake. Had three bites of plain vanilla before I got to a whiff of Oreo. The kicker was they forgot my corn dog side and I'd already made it home. I'd read previous reviews of people getting annoyed they forgot parts of their order and should've taken their advice to fully check my order more seriously. Giving two stars because when I went back they easily fixed the corn dog/milkshake. Grateful it was open and I could put something in my body after an 11pm flight, but making a second round trip home that late at night was less than ideal. read more

I knew nothing about this place, but Isabel told me it's the chain that North Carolinians are most proud of so I figured we had to try it (Isabel had also never been to one). There was Spanish lady and some black lady who were arguing during their shift the customer service was terrible. I'm not the type of person to be impressed by a Cookout. Sometimes the service at these locations late at night can be slow because of how crowded the establishment is. But if that's the case, the last thing anyone should do is blame the person taking orders from the drive-thru. When I write that I witnessed the most incredible display of order taking, I mean it. And I've been to Chick-Fil-A, an establishment touted for their customer service. The brilliant employee on the speaker not only got our large 5 person order perfectly entered in the register (props to the cooks for assembling it correctly as well), but he was ready and asking if we wanted anything else immediately after our designated order placer took a breath to continue. For example, we ordered an Oreo Cookie Dough milkshake. By the time "Milk-" was spoken, he was ready and asking us if we'd like anything else this evening. Cookout does a pretty good job of keeping consistency across their restaurants, and this one doesn't fall off the mark. If you don't come to this place and get a $5 tray, you are losing your bang for buck, and the review might as well drop to three stars. Otherwise, as they nickname it "THE BEST COMBO IN [insert town name]", the tray really is an amazing deal. You can get a main item, two sides, and a drink for only $5, upgrade to a shake for $1 extra. Since most people already know this, I'll try to give some tips on what I think your tray should look like. It depends on what you want, but you essentially can't go wrong with the main item. I typically get a big double burger, because it feels like a real large burger, but the 2 quesadillas and the chicken strips are also good options quantity and taste wise. For the sides, always try to get one of them as the fries (add cajun seasoning for free, just ask). They really like to fill up the box with the fries, so having only one side of fries they just fill up the tray with they and you end up getting a lot compared to if you just got fries on their own. Most of the other sides are great, but I would veer away from the slaw/chili and the chicken nuggets, solely based on them not giving enough. For the drink, I highly suggest going for the cheerwine/coke float, which is at no extra cost, instead of the shake for an extra dollar. Speaking more about this specific Cookout, it is indoors, which is really nice if you're going with others and you want to have a common place to sit down. In addition, you won't ever have along wait since they do get through orders pretty quickly, even when there are a lot of people. The biggest gripe I'd have for this place is probably the sanitation. I feel kind of dirty when I'm eating there as most of the chairs and tables are pretty sticky and the bathroom is typically in bad condition. Considering the quality and quantity you get for cheap prices, I try to ignore it anyways. All in all, a very run-of-the-mill Cookout that is legendary in its bang for buck, but is held back by its lack of sanitation. read more

Came here at about 3-4am. There are so many Cook Out locations! 1. Incredibly long line of aggressive drunk drivers = high potential for car accidents, especially because people will try to cut you in line. umm sorry people, but this is NOT the same as cutting in front of someone at the grocery store - we're all in cars, it's far more dangerous. Please be considerate. 2. You're supposed to be able to add as many milkshake options as you'd like, but the lady taking my order was not having it. She repeated my order, but I assure you, I ordered far more than 4 ingredients! I corrected her, but she refused to repeat my order accurately. I have no idea what ended up being in the milkshake (M&Ms, peanut butter, and I guess chocolate with banana or something along those lines), but it was less than half of what I ordered. What an outrage! 3. On top of that, she started over with a "Welcome to Cook Out....(blah blah blah)" Excuse me, but our group is still here. We haven't moved. And you got half our orders wrong. Rude. Nonetheless, I'm giving at least 3 stars for the food because it still tasted good and was cheap, even though it wasn't quite what I ordered. As far as Cook Outs go, this one is a winner. The location is convenient and it's always bustling with people and cars. They have a very high sanitation rating, and they serve you quickly. I got milkshakes here a couple of times in the past month and all were delicious! Banana pudding., peach cobbler, and oreo mint were all winners. The food is as expected for Cook Out, and will fill the junk food craving you have at 2AM. It's not a place I would go for food unless all the other restaurants are closed. If you google the calories for their meals (and compare it to other similar foods at other fast food places), you'll understand why. And I wasn't! Since I first came across this miraculous concept in Charlotte, I will copy forward an edited summation of my Charlotte Cookout review for my triangle brethren. For the uninitiated, for $4.79, you get an entree (typical fast food fare and more - burgers, spicy chicken sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, chicken/beef quesadilla), a soda, and the kicker - 2 sides from an incredible list of choices. We're talking about a corn dog, a cajun chicken wrap, bacon wrap, more quesadilla, chicken nuggets, chili, and so much more. Of course you've got your standard fried fare like onion rings, fries, even hush puppies. It's like 2 meals in one. For less than five frickin dollars. And for $1 more, you can switch out your drink for a milkshake, choosing from about 40 different flavors that they're happy to mix and match for you. For instance, my recent personal creation was a delicious cappucino peanut butter fudge shake. To drive things home, here's an actual quote from my girlfriend: "I don't understand how Cookout is able to give us that much food for that price. It just boggles my mind." My friends love the chicken quesadilla and cajun chicken sandwich. The milkshakes here are the real deal. I've brought a lot of out-of-state friends to Cookout for milkshakes, and I have yet to hear a bad review. I've tried many of the milkshakes, and my top favorites are the mint oreo, the banana pineapple (with real banana and pineapple chunks), and the peach cobbler (ALL SO DIVINE). The milkshakes here are unlike any other - they are so thick and creamy that you HAVE to use a spoon to eat it. Sure, they give you a straw, but it's completely unnecessary in my opinion. So yes, it's more like you're eating a giant ice cream sundae rather than sipping on a milkshake, but it is just oh, soooo good. If you go to Cookout and aren't horribly lactose intolerant (even if you are, just take some lactase - I promise it's worth it), get a milkshake. One of the best things that $3 can buy. A great thing about this location is that there's actually indoor seating (most Cookout venues are solely drive through with a few seats, if any, outdoors). The ambiance has a lodge-feel with a lot of wood composing of the seats and the walls. The service is still really fast, which is an awesome characteristic of all Cookouts. Trays- like combos, but so much more than fries and a drink. Wife loves hush puppies, I like the chicken wraps for sides. BBQ is NC style with coleslaw and pulled pork. Cheerwine! Not many places serve this NC classic, much less in a drive-thru. Special bonus: you can upgrade your tray beverage to a coke or my preference the cheer wine float. For FREE! $1 more for a shake. This new location is especially awesome as it has indoor seating, so no need to eat and run. The staff here was helpful and accommodating, offering to take our waste and fill drinks. We got there about two weeks after it opened and there was a line of cars around the road and a line inside. There were several people outside taking orders to expedite the flow as best as possible. Not as awesome: It is fast food, probably not the healthiest place to eat, especially on a regular basis. We splurge on the rare occasion and split a tray and get a milkshake when we can control our gluttonous desires. Also the location is a bit secluded, next to VW dealership and near the SAMs and target off 15/501. Can I start off by saying how incredibly clean this location is? Like, it could have been a museum of a fast food restaurant, it was that clean! We are all about supporting local chains, and this restaurant is a pleasant one to throw money at.
