I've been a customer for just 4 months and already getting a monthly fee increase of $24 per month. That's a 10% increase within 4 months.. with no notice! "A postcard was sent" was the response when I called to find out why the increase. I check the mail and definitely didn't get a postcard. Even if a postcard was mailed, they couldn't send me an email? I'm getting those monthly emails showing me they got paid. This feels like sneaky business practice. No apologies for the miscommunication or offer to work with me when I said I would be looking to move to another storage company. I'll be moving my things to Public Storage in the next week. Too bad SmartStop's owners need to squeeze more money and lost a customer. Would definitely NOT recommend this business. read more

Horrible experience - rat infected &unhelpful staff I had the absolute worst experience with this storage facility. We rented a unit here to store some stuff of my mom belongings that died of cancer, and when we went to check on them, we were horrified to find that the place was completely infested with rat dropping. We even found a dead rat. Unfortunately almost all of my moms sentimental items were damaged beyond repair. Furniture, family heirloom- completely ruined. I tried to reach out to the staff and district manager Derrick, hoping they would help or at least compensate for the damage, but they were completely unresponsive and dismissive. It felt like they didn't care at all about the situation or loss we experienced. No apology, no offer to fix the issue, nothing. Instead I was stuck with the responsibility of cleaning out the unit with risk my health to see what I would reserve anything that was left of my mom. I was also let with a bill when I had to hire someone to help me hual everything out of my storage that was damaged. I can't believe they let a place this unsanitary and unsafe be open for business. PLEASE do yourself a favor and find a more professional storage facility - this place is a nightmare that robbed me for Over a year. Absolutely awful experience. If you're a first time customer they purposely will give you a deal so you can sign a contract with them. After about 3 months then they bump up the price on you and giving you some BS story to why they had to raised the price. They false advertise. read more

Rat droppings, urine stains, and chewed boxes ruined many valuable possessions. After paying $600 a month for 8 years and enduring ashes from a fire behind the unit, dust from nearby construction and rat feces and urination on everything inside my unit- I was just informed on March 22, 2025 that they sold/auctioned my storage unit which included All of my Mother's and Grandmother's Heirlooms and many of my personal heirlooms and several of my belongings to Storage Treasures. Now I am trying to get an Auction ID number to buy back what is left. I Never received a letter stating that they would be auctioning my items. I was told that they would notify me when their largest and cleaner storage unit would be available. No body ever called me. I would call and nobody would pick- up and the voice mailbox would be full. I went to the storage facility yesterday to pick up left-over damaged photos and albums and I was not allowed to see what else was left behind. Cathy is the Manager there and Needs to be fired. Jennifer works there and needs to be made the New Manager because she was at least willing to help me lift the 8 rancid boxes. Cathy the useless manager screamed out for her not to help me- Can you imagine? Thankfully Jennifer still helped me. My Late Parent's Wedding Album was among the rubble of ravaged boxes that I was able to retrieve. If You or Anybody You know ever needs a Storage Facility - Stay Far Away from SmartStop Storage. Even the Corporate Office has ignored my numerous messages. Public Storage with All their recent problems in the news- I am certain would Never have RATS in their units. Someone tried to break into my unit but the manager wouldn't help me because my husband is on the lease. Was treated incredibly rude, and wasn't even told what security measures they take to deal with and prevent such issues. Cathy didn't tell me, even as a person inquiring about a unit, how they would take care of such issues. No information at all. Super rude! It's unfortunate they treat people so poorly. I understand I'm not on the lease but for someone wanting more information on how they deal with these kind of problems, no help was given. On top of that the call center yelled at me and told me lies saying no supervisor is available, they have no boss or supervisor, then they said "ok fine! I'm the supervisor, what do you want?!" etc. Just wow! What a joke! read more

This place is a JOKE!! From the beginning we had problems . So we rented a 10x20 unit come to find out all our stuff wouldn't fit . I looked online and they were still have promotions of renting a unit first months rent waived and just need to pay the initial fee $20 and if you needed a lock which we didn't . Ok so as I start doing that online I get a call from them stating I can't do that cause I already have a unit in my name , the promotion doesn't count towards me blah blah blah so I said ok show me where online it says that . She's like oh no that's just policy promotions are only for first time customers again no proof . And I said ok fine I'll just put it in my husband's name cause there's nothing tied to him with the other storage she got mad and hung up on me . So I proceeded to do as I said . Did the reservation paid the fee got the confirmation email and everything . We go to the office to sign any other documents needed . And that's when crap hits the fan . My husband walks in since it's in his name and she gives him attitude stating "YOU GUYS CRASHED MY SYSTEM" so there's nothing I can do to help you . My husband gets upset calls me in the office and she starts going off on me saying idk what you guys did but you messed up the system I can't rent a storage to you blah blah blah . So I'm like no there's plenty you can do instead of being RUDE . I told her call the manager she hesitated I said you don't wanna help us so I will talk to someone hire up then you no problem . So I get on the phone explain the situation the manager ends up saying give back the phone to so and so . So that's what I do they talk for like 5 mins and hang up she ends up saying ok I'll help you put you're gonna have to do everything all over again. Including paying the fee again which was $38 dollars this time . She said and I quote I can't touch the payment you already made cause it's still processing but in 7-10 days you'll get a refund. I say ok fine . We end up finishing what we needed to she walks us to the 2nd unit we walk in and there's Poop on the floor not like dog poop it looked human poop the size it was it was disgusting. I tell her and all she says is oh I gotta check who did that on the camera . Whatever fast forward we were there about an hr and never did she come back to pick it up or anything . So days had passed it was about 2 weeks since the 2nd unit was rented I still hadn't got my refund so I decide to call . Mind you payment of the storages is coming up . So at first when I would call the office it was always get forwarded to the customer service center and I would call within business hours . Every time I talked to someone there their like oh yeah we see the charge your talking about twice but no refund is issued that I would have to call the office and talk to someone cause they handle their on refunds I say ok but how do I do that if no one ever answers there when I call ‍. I call a day later and finally get a hold of someone I explain what's going on and what was said . They too say the same thing but say they would write a note in my file and let the person know that does refunds to issue me a refund again another 7-10 days because he wasn't in the office that day . Again time passes I never get the refund I call they ended up making up some dumb excuse of why they couldn't and what the extra $38 fee was for and keep it . I'm like No if I don't get a refund I want that credited to my account . She stays quiet and goes oh no we can't do that cause that's a different system WTF Fast forward again this was all in February 2024 we literally only needed the unit for about a month because mid March 2024 we took our stuff out . Ok so come March we let them know 10 days prior like they asked about moving one of the storages out and we get attitude. We do what we need to remove all items and left clean we go back to the office and let them know she's like ok you're done without even checking it . I'm like no I want it checked and a receipt stating the accounts closed . Again nothing to say she goes oh my god under her breath and walks away . At this point I'm done with this RUDE ASS LADY & don't understand how she's still employed there . Ok so that one was taken care of . Come a week later we clear out or other unit again 10 day notice was given . In the bigger unit come to find out there was rats in there . We had dressers and poop and rat urine all in there poop all on the floor it was gross to the point where I'm like I don't want that stuff nor am I taking it with me. I tell her and she was like you leave it in here you're gonna get charged cause the storage isn't empty. I'm like that's disgusting you wouldn't take that stuff if it was yours either . Long story short we just ended up breaking them down and throwing the pieces away in a nearby trash . I end up getting charged $14 for the extra day it was left in there. read more

I'm closing my account this week. I've had the storage for 2 months and the 5 times I've came the code does not work... each freaking time. Have they tried giving me a new passcode? Nope. They just keep saying it's the system and they just need to refresh it. I've came after office hours but still before 10p and the two numbers on the door of the office were useless in helping me. Raised my rent with no email and lied abt sending a letter to me. They claimed I was 2 months late when it was was 32 days. Refused to prorate the month because it was the 4th and they only prorate to the 3rd day. Claimed they'd Charge 125 for a late fee. It was double the amount they claimed. Careful when renting for what could be long term. The unit size I rent is 10x20. I moved in Oct 2019 for a monthly fee of $ 220.00. In 2021, the monthly charge was increased to $ 269.00. Nov 2022, the monthly charge is now $ 348.00. An $ 80.00 increase. There's no advanced notice of the increases. read more

the worse customer service. requested to have my mailing address changed. the change i had made to the website, does not update the office! told me the only way to update the office records was for me to come to office. so the mail they are sending will continue to go to wrong address, despite the smartstop website showing my correct address. totally foolish "policy". i cannot come to office as I am out of state for extended period. i have contacted over 100 entities via phone, website, emails telling my new address. only smartstop tells me i must come in person to there office in azusa to change my address. smartstop sounds more like dumbstop. read more

Despite having to be displaced due to a fire in their main office their onsite manager Cathy was super helpful and friendly. Was initially having some trouble getting through on the phone but their corporate call center sent an email and I received a call back within 15 mins.
