Absolutely unacceptable experience. The bed was literally held together with a ratchet strap, broken springs, and the toilet was propped up using a PVC pipe. We found a cockroach in the room, and the sheets were clearly dirty and had not been changed. We asked to see other rooms, but after looking at three different options, each one was worse than the last. On top of that, the employee (Chrissy) we dealt with was extremely unprofessional and rude, making the situation even more frustrating. This is my 2nd stay. We moved into a room, unpacked and noticed room isn't cooling properly and it is leaking outside pretty profusely. The woman at front desk Saturday evening was nice and transfered us to another room, next door. The room was pretty small and beds were just doubles but we made it work. If only you could give no stars. I have been staying at this hotel on and off for 2 years. I have never had an issue or problem until this last time. We have stayed 3 nights. We went to extend for a 4th night. My husband went to the lobby to pay the morning of as we always do, and they said the house keeper told them the room smelled like smoke the day before. None of us smoke, so that's not true. My husband let them know that they could come in and check. He also told them that the air conditioning was leaking into the floor. The manager contacted their maintenance person. At the time my son was still sleeping. My husband asked if they could look at it later as my son was sleeping. He was out at our vehicle and I went to take the dog to use the bathroom. While I had stepped out, the manager proceeded to let the maintenance man into my room with my 12 year old son asleep. I ran back to the room with my dog, and my husband walked in just as I did and told that man that my son was sleeping, he didn't need to be in there. The manager walked up as the maintenance man left the room. They closed the door with me inside the room. I opened the door and asked her what was going on and if I needed to check out because if I did then I needed to get my stuff out ASAP so I could make it to my appointment on time. She said that I was fine and did not need to. At the time she was standing about 5 or so feet from the door with those other people talking. Because of my anger I may have shut the door a bit more forceful than I had intended. The manager then went up to the front where my husband was waiting to pay and said that I was disrespectful and needed to check out. I had to pack up my entire room, and ended up being 30 minutes late for my appointment. I've asked for the owner's information to which I was told that I wasn't going to be getting it. When I said, I would figure it out, I was told good luck. I don't think it is appropriate or acceptable for them to have opened the door without me in there and my child asleep in the bed. Especially after telling them I had an appointment coming up that they could have gone in there during. read more

We reserved a room here for four days this week and then found out that a hurricane was going to be impacting this area. We cancelled our reservation about 8 hours after we made it. Booking.com said they would waive the cancellation fee under the circumstances that Florida was expecting a catastrophic hurricane. This hotel however did not waive the fee. We arrived and the lobby was nice, but the woman who checked us in was not very friendly at check in. I greeted HER by saying hello when I walked in and she looked at me as if I was speaking another language. I can get past the unfriendly woman but cleanliness is where I draw the line. There was a USED BAR OF SOAP in our tub. Which let me know they 1. Didn't clean it 2. Left a nasty opened bar of used soap. There was also long dark black hair in the tub and on the floor of the bathroom, my hair is red so it was a dead giveaway that it was not mine and lastly there is a photo of my child's foot after walking barefoot on the floor. (My husband let him do that) before you judge me The employee the next morning at breakfast was nice (a male) and the waffle maker was a nice touch/breakfast options were not bad at all. But overall I would never ever stay here again due to cleanliness. It is next to the interstate but it was not loud in my opinion and that was not bothersome. This place is really clean and safe with plenty of parking close to the buildings. Staff is always friendly when encountered and very accommodating! Groundskeeping is always doing something to upkeep the property outside, so it is always nice looking everywhere you look. They even have a dog park and laundry available on site! Rooms are super clean and everything works as it should. Beds are insanely plush. You don't have to worry about rowdy construction workers or drug dealers staying here like you do at the other hotels nearby. A real hidden gem in st. Augustine! read more

What a wonderful find! We were heading further South and got stuck in traffic. We were too pooped to continue another 300 miles to our destination, so I starting looking for a dog-friendly place to stay the night. Room is spotless...check-in was painless. Chris gave us great directions to the motel...it can be hard to find at night even though it is less than a half mile off of interstate 95. Fully gated dog park, so the dogs got to stretch their legs. Fridge and microwave in our room. Great place to stay if you are traveling with four legged friends. The room was so clean from the bathroom to the floors to sheets, pillows, counter tops, everything! Tv, microwave, iron, fridge (nice size). I was the second floor pool side view. Pool area was extremely clean , water was crystal clear. There was a spa (jacuzzi jetbtub) that felt great and was just as clean as the pool. Designated smoking area was well kept. There was a dog park so hotel is pet friendly but I wouldn't have known if a pet had been in the room before me or even on the premises unless I seen it with my own eyes. Nose levels are low other than the highway sounds (near highway exit) Nighttime activity doesn't not make me feel unsafe. Everyone seemed friendly or just didn't speak. Some people even felt comfortable to leave there doors wide open at night. I dont blame them but better safe than sorry in my opinion. Hotel staff seemed friendly. Kid friendly - yes ! Breakfast was on scale of OK GOOD GREAT EXCELLENT - I'd choose GREAT ( Nice selection ) you can make ur own mini waffles Staff wore masks, Lobby was clean and sanitized Check in was quick and easy. Gym area. Ice machines. Close to gas stations, fast-food variety , dollar general and family dollar etc... I found this hidden gem by accident due to being stranded on I-95 from a tire blow out. I have stayed a several different hotels! This one is totally NOT worth it! Even if the money is cheaper, just don't! Save yourself the time! The sheets looked clean but upon closer inspection with a flash light we noticed sweat stains and much much more!!!! . Found a dead roach in the "clean" bathroom by the sink. Water pressure in the shower just isn't there. The pillow cases had sweat stains and other stains! We had to wash our own sheets at night because they had closed the front desk and no clerk is on property at that time for us to get more sheets. So we went to Walmart and bought the right kind of cleaning products and rewashed our sheets! Never again! read more

Booked this hotel for our trip to St. Augustine through Booking.com. It is a pretty nice and simple hotel for those who don't need anything too fancy. The rooms have nice T.Vs, Small refrigerators, iron with an ironing board, hair dryers and a microwave and coffee maker. This hotel also has a nice sized pool and jacuzzi. The best part is they are pet friendly!! Which is great for travelers. They even have a pet area. Breakfast is also included and pretty good!! Definitely would stay again. read more

Renovated rooms This property is an older style motel outside St Augustine just off the Interstate 95 that has been renovated recently. The motel and its rooms are fresh, bright and modern and well designed. There is no elevator which is not a problem as there are only 2 floors. Our room had a super comfortable king bed, coffee machine, flat screen TV and compact bathroom, but we found it quite small and cramped - especially once we moved in with our 2 suitcases. There was a large armchair on one side of the bed - it would have been more useful to have a nightstand/bedside table, since we did not sit in the armchair! We had a room facing into the pool area in centre of the property - which was great as the I-95 is very noisy. With all the windows closed and the air conditioning on, we were not disturbed by any traffic noise. We really enjoyed the pool area - the hot tub was a terrific way to wind down after a day of sightseeing. The breakfast was pretty good with the usual chain hotel offerings and REAL scrambled and poached eggs - it just finished a little bit too early for us (9.00 am on weekdays). We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights and our coffee supplies were not replenished by housekeeping at all. We had to request coffee from reception every evening! read more

I stayed at the Smart Stay Hotel Feb 27-Feb 28. We had two rooms and three dogs. The staff was helpful and polite, the room was comfortable, and the dog park was a nice touch. We didn't use it because we were there for a short time and had two older dogs and a rambunctious puppy with us. In the park was a covered area, poop station, water bowls, and a hose. Breakfast the next morning was good and set us on our day nicely. read more

On my way to Fla. from Northern Va., l decided to stop overnite here, after reading reviews on Yelp. Despite a few negative reviews, my stay was a happy one in all aspects. My room was exceptionally clean, the furnishings, while not elaborate, were more than adequate...the bed was comfortable and the room size exceeded my expectations. Surprisingly they served a full breakfast in a nice dining area that was full of families with small children. I realize a few posts have described this hotel as a hotel from hell, and maybe they happened to get a room that was in dire need of some attention, but mine was not one of them. Instead of avoiding a place on someone's word, feel free to ASK to see a room or YOUR room before your credit card is processed, then if unhappy, just move on. Now if the majority the posts submitted were negative, l would have never stopped in the first place...but l'm happy that l did stop! read more

FINAL UPDATE: Please see photos for more detail. Management confirmed several suspicious individuals near my room at the time of the break in but was evasive with details because they're angry about my review. They stated they believe the person was someone I know despite me living several states away. No accountability. Unsafe. I stayed here with my mother on the nights of May 9th and 10th, 2022. This morning (May 11th), we left our room around 7:45AM to have breakfast in the lobby. My mother returned around 8:30AM to our hotel room and noticed our front door was ajar. She assumed we hadn't closed it properly and entered the room. I returned shortly after and found myself unable to enter the room because the lock had been broken. At this point, I noticed the frame of the door was damaged due to what was an obvious break in. Someone had pried the door open with a crowbar or similar object. The lock was so severely damaged that my mother was unable to exit the room until employees replaced the entire lock and handle, which took about an hour. Myself and the employees had to enter and exit the room from the window. Nothing from the room was taken. We had valuables in the room which leads me to believe whoever entered was not looking for our valuables. When leaving the room that morning for breakfast, I believe my mother and I left at slightly different times and took different routes to the lobby, potentially leaving anyone observing the area to believe that only one of us had exited. I expressed to the hotel staff and police that another guest at the hotel had made me a bit uncomfortable the day prior, so I made an effort to only enter my room when I did not see this guest. There are cameras on the premises and I requested that these cameras be reviewed. I was told that this would have to wait until tomorrow as there was not a manager on duty that day. I was unable to file an official police report as my belongings were not taken and the damaged caused was only to hotel property. I write this as a warning to people, especially women, that hotel staff seem to be unconcerned with the safety of their patrons. A woman who works for the hotel saw the broken door frame and said this was not old damage and it was clear to her that someone had broken into our room while we were at breakfast. Why this is not a high priority to the hotel is beyond me. The person who did this may be a guest. The person who did this may be parked across the street, where there are many tractor trailers that stay overnight. The hotel premises is covered in signs stating they're under surveillance and multiple cameras were pointed towards our room, yet they did not feel the need to pull the footage. We were never offered an apology of any kind and were too eager to leave to argue. I plan to speak with the manager at 7am and will update with a resolution, but their initial response is inexcusable. I saw a young, single woman at the hotel and am concerned for her safety. I wish hotel staff felt the same way. Nice room, good buffet, but should probably take breaking and entering a little more seriously. Addition: After attempting to post this to Google reviews, I've received a notification that reviews aren't currently being accepted for this location. Their latest review was posted 6 hours ago, leading me to believe they turned off reviews after I checked out with concerns that I would call them out for their negligence. Update: I called this morning to speak with the manager and he dismissed my concerns. He was also unable to speak to another review from less than two weeks ago stating hotel staff is not diligent in keeping their guests safe. More detail in my photos. read more

My family and I have stayed here many times over the last couple of years. Every. Single. Time has been great! The staff has a positive and comfortable presence and the management is very involved in everything. I am a "late nighter." (Work wise) my laptop went down unexpectedly and luckily I had the convenience of their public computer in the lobby. Even though I've never had a complaint anyway, it was so comforting to be able to go down to the lobby at 2am (various times) and feel completely safe and not a hinderance in any way! Obviously, this is always our preference, so I highly recommend for anyone else also! For the price I'm not sure you can beat this place. Right off i95 so it's great for an overnight stay when driving north. Room was clean and remodeled, front desk staff was friendly, bed was comfortable and they allow pets, what more can I ask for. They also have free breakfast (which we didn't get to try) and WiFi which worked well. In addition they have a nice little dog park. If I could give this hotel a zero stars I would. I was pleasantly surprised when we walked inside the room. Laminate floors instead of carpet was new and impressive for these type of motels. The room was clean and relatively nice for the price we paid which was $60. Every time we check out of a hotel room I remove the blankets and sheets from the bed to make sure we are not leaving anything behind. This time it was no different, I proceeded to remove the blankets as usual only to find a DEAD coackroach stuck to the fitted sheet. It was a small one, about 1/4" but it grossed me out. When we checked out that morning, we complained to the manager (we really we not looking for a discount) just wanted to let her know and all she did was say "l'm sorry" without much thought about what was said. This hotel was TOP notch!! First , let me say MOST hotels in this area were booked solid because this is the 1st night of the "LIGHT UP CHRISTMAS" in St. Augustine, FL. As I entered the lobby it was very clean. We were greeted right away. Felicity was so friendly and definitely had excellent customer service. I asked for a pull out bed. She double checked and they didn't have any. So she made a SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT to give me a SUITE!!! How sweet!! Get it?!?! I got a SUITE and that's super SWEET!! LOLOLOLOLOL!!! I am so happy with our room. It has two double beds , a pull out sleeper - sofa and two chairs with foot rests. Everything looks clean and new! "Felicity" gets 5-stars for going above and beyond! Pros: Nice room; very clean. The grounds were nice with a pool and jacuzzi. Breakfast was really nice, eggs (poached and scrambled), sausage, sliced bread, danish, bagels, bananas and yogurt. This hotel is very pet friendly. Cons: Night one was fine, night two was horrible! We were in room 250 and there was a constant tapping or dripping sound, someone was smoking marijuana and the smell was coming through the bathroom vent (I'm pro-cannabis but this was nuts) for the entire night. The nice guy at the front desk did try to locate the culprit but it didn't stop the smokers. Once we finally fell asleep there was a full blown argument and we had to listen to the girl scream at whoever she was with off and on for at least two hours about him telling someone else that he loved them. Because I know the staff can't really prevent the smoking and arguing I still have 4 stars but if thin walls and possible weed smoke bother you...you may want to look elsewhere. read more

Bad service, disrespect, discriminatory and racist staff Chris and Jay not recommended. Bad customer service, they called the room to indicate noise when asked, they tell us that we speak loudly and in Spanish that the room next door makes a complaint. They gave 30 minutes to evacuated the room of a disabled person and military veteran. When I indicated that I have the adjoining room at that moment they told me that I also have to evacuated the room, Chris and Jay committed discrimination and racism. It's a shame because I don't remember the name of the employee who checked us in. She's the only one that was friendly and had an excellent customer service. I do not recommend the hotel, in the pool and the Jacuzzi was dirty I had to use the silk to clean it and be able to used it. The person they allege was intoxicated who spoke loudly and in Spanish is the same person who made the reservation at the other hotel that we stayed in, which I do recommend from the Holiday Inn chain. To summarize I do not recommend THE SMART STAY INN as they mistreated an elderly, disabled person and who defended our nation. read more

This place was absolutely disgusting with bugs and dirty bed. Not only that you get the general sense of being unsafe. The parking lot even has signs that read "park at your own risk." We stayed for 5 mins but they refused to refund us. I wouldn't recommend staying here if you value yourself in anyway. read more

The hotel staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms looked recently renovated and above all they were clean! Well, talk about a huge surprise! Dont let the inexpensive rates, or the non-household name deter you! This hotel is freshly remodeled, with fantastic rooms! I spent $80/night for this room here, and everything about it is superior to the $220 room I spent at a Hilton a month ago. Seriously. I'm not making this up! They have a great free breakfast, which is awesome, free WiFi, and all kinds of amenities that name brand chains typically nickel and dime for. The A/C is super cold, tv is big, pillows are amazing and the decor is great. It's also great to have a hotel that decided to not go carpet in the rooms, and instead use a rug. I always found carpet in hotels to be a bit gross, but I'm also a germ freak. I frequent St Aug all the time, and I will be staying here from now on, hands down. read more

We stayed here over night. My wife noticed that the desk clerk was watching us as we left to go grab something to eat. When we returned, our room door was open. The clerk in question had left but the afternoon clerk made dozens of excuses for our room being entered after we left. NOT a safe place to stay unless you drag all your belongings with you when you depart for anything. read more
