The customer service after the move was great, but the move itself was a disaster. I am still finding items that were intact before the move in June broken. what gets me is parts were hidden behind the door or left in a corner. The antique lamp had been passed down, destroyed. A lot of things that were not originally on the plan were added by us last minute, and the crew led by Alberto, never batted an eye. This was our first ever time using movers. They called us a few hours early and gave us the option to start early, which was really nice and worked well. Honestly nothing but good things to say. They were nice, incredibly efficient and effective. I felt like they were trying to do the best job they could to ensure our things were packaged and moved safely AND I felt like they were moving as fast as they could to save us money. Super polite as well. All of this, by the way, was moving us out of an apartment with no AC, no elevator and two flights of stairs in the middle of August. 5 stars, easiest review I will ever write. The cherry on top is that their quote was the lowest price by far in the area. I shopped around a lot, called many companies and Smart Penny was the cheapest by a wide margin. They ended up right above their quote, but I take responsibility for forgetting a few items when we were quoting in the first place. Hired these guys last summer for a move from Boston to southern Maine. They managed to sneak me in at the local rate AND they moved me on 4th of July weekend. I can't say enough good things about these guys! Hilton and his crew were phenomenal and I would have happily paid more for the level of service I received. Every crew member was careful, courteous, and highly competent. In all, our move was almost exactly as it was estimated which is no small feat considering we were in a 3rd story walk up. Our very large armoire needed to be moved along with a bed. Brothers, Nanga and Pedro, tried to squeeze it down our very tight stair case. It didn't fit. They spent an hour trying to take it apart, relying on YouTube and ingenuity. After taking the base off, they were able to snake it down the stairs. Unfortunately, a bit of damage was done to our walls in the process (more on that later). We had a two-part pick up as they needed to swap out a mattress at our daughters apartment and pick up additional items. When we arrived, there far more items than expected. Without any complaints, Nanga and Pedro loaded up everything and delivered the material to the last stop, unexpectedly facing an even smaller staircase. They had to take the armoire apart further. While it took longer than expected because of the architectural challenges, they got everything moved in and reassembled. When I spoke to the company about the hallway wall damage, they had someone come out the next business day to repair everything. There's no longer any evidence of damage. Everyone was very friendly, professional and worked hard to get us settled. We will call them again for our next move. read more

Do yourself a favor and hold them to their webpage promise of getting parking permits. With or without a permit only legal parking is allowed. Permits alleviate neighbor stress by providing advance warning and an end time. I was out gardening and waiting for a text from a daughter wanting to be picked up but the driver didn't even ask about blocking my driveway; when I approached him, he copped out that he was just the mover not the homeowner. Do the right thing if you want new neighbors to actually believe you'll be less annoying than your construction/renovation company was for two years. (See plenty of space behind the truck? Hired Smart Penny after they provided the best quote as well as they were recommended by a neighbor. Smart Penny estimated it would take 3 hours to move the big furniture in the house but it took them 6.25 over double, so now the best quote has turned into the worst quote. Mike was always "supervising" instead of working, despite paying for 3 movers. It took Mike over 45 minutes to assemble 2 twin beds (4 allen wrench screws and screws down bunkie boards) I had to fix the bunkie boards as he didnt even screw the screws all the way in. The Mike told me they couldn't fit the full size boxspring in my basement he told me "it isnt possible" After Smart Penny left my husband and a friend got the full sized boxspring in the basement in less than 5 minutes. Mike could not figure out how to get dresser from the second floor to the first floor,I had to tell them how to get it down. When you hire Smart Penny you do not get experience, you just get people that might be able to move your furniture. read more

I had the best experience ever with Smart Penny Moving for my recent move from Boston to South Carolina. The team they sent was very professional, hard-working and respectful of my belongings. They took great care to wrap all of my furniture so that nothing would get damaged. They were extremely efficient. Their quote was very reasonable and with the 5% discount for cash (checks accepted as cash), my total expenses (even with additional boxes/packing needed for some floor lamps and miscellaneous items I did not have boxes for), it still came in under the original quote. I have moved several times in the past 10 years and have never had such a positive experience. The only thing that wasn't perfect was that my bed with the large storage drawers was not assembled properly and the two drawers do not close correctly. I should have checked that before they left but I didn't think to. Even so, I am still very, very satisfied and recommend them without hesitation. I made an appointment with Smart Penny Moving for an estimate. I worked for two days packing, preparing, and organizing the furniture and boxes that I wanted moved from MA to PA. I prepared an itemized list to simplify the process. I got up early to make sure that everything was in place for the 11:00 appointment. I waited outside to guide the estimator out to my Carriage House, again to save time. At 11:08, I received a call saying that traffic was heavy and that he would arrive NO LATER THAN 1:00 PM. I wasn't pleased but, because I had already invested so much time in preparing, I decided to continue waiting, despite the fact that I had an afternoon appointment across town. One o'clock came and went, but still nobody showed up. By the time I finally received another call with yet another lame excuse, I had steam coming out of my ears. Why would I trust my antiques and other belongings to a company that couldn't even make and keep an appointment, much less twice on the same day!!! I received yet another call from the company after I told the driver not to bother showing up--that i intended to find a different moving company.
