So I shop at the smart and final store often and today Tuesday, September 4 at 9:30 AM express lane was clear with not even one customer and the cashier with the Coke bottle glasses and curly hair declined to service me and told me that I cannot be in her lane that I have more than 15 items , she's very rude and lazy apparently. So now I'm in line and register #7 is building a line while she's standing over at express not doing anything. Like where do they learn these business ethics ? This is 1 reason (main reason) why This store always has horrible lines and don't even think about coming from 2:00 on down cuz it's even worst. Plus the girls make mad face when you ask them to bag your stuff they make a face and roll their eyes or take their time. I have come to hate this location!! Every single time I come in for items advertised on the ad they are sold out. So far it has been 3 weeks in a row now. I understand that anything advertised will sell faster than any other item in the store. While I complained to one of the cashiers I asked if they were able to place orders or if corporate just automatically generated and shipped the orders. She said someone in the store places the orders. Which means they have control over how much is ordered. Common sense.... If you will advertise an item and it's on sale the following week... ORDER MORE!!!! Because you will sell more than usual. This location was convenient because I can grab any last minute items while I pick up my kids from school at the same time. I guess I will be going to Albertson's across the street from now on. read more

The worst experience of customer service I have seen. ...and it was a team effort. Was looking for a simple item in the store and was passed around from employee to employee due to their "going on break" and "too busy, right now" I finally was pointed in the right direction by the cashier after waiting in line. Unbelievable to see this happen. Asked for $40 back from cashier after transaction and received a wad of 5's as it was most convenient for the cashier to give me that. I guess the fact that I have a small wallet doesn't matter. She stayed I could go ask another cashier if I wanted 20's. Lastly, I asked to speak with the manager (which I never do) and once they were called I could see the manager engage in conversation with a cashier 4 aisles from where I was waiting, that took about 10 minutes. Maybe they were busy, maybe not, but at that moment I was so disappointed with how I was treated that this action by management completely crossed the line of acceptable treatment of a customer. As a customer, I'm taking my busy somewhere else. It's obvious smart and final (especially this montebello location) doesn't concern itself with customers or service. My favorite place to shop! It's been improved since the remodel a few years ago. This location is spacious, well organized and stocked. This is one-stop shopping for the most part...however, I still prefer to pick up meats/chicken/fish at Costco. I like the big produce section and the quality of the selection. Since the remodel they added a bin section with grains, snacks, flour, candy, dried fruit, etc. Some good weekly deals to look out for. The only thing I dislike about shopping here is that I don't get if I'm supposed to bag my own groceries. It's very inconsistent. Sometimes someone comes over to help bag, sometimes the cashier helps. But More often I end up doing it myself. As a courtesy to my fellow shoppers in line behind me, I start bagging when my things are scanned and start to pile up. But then I stress out because the cashier pushes all my stuff and starts scanning the next customer before I'm out of the way. What to do?? A little help would be nice. read more

I entered the store a few minutes after opening today. The store was nice and clean and quiet. I was looking for an item that was on display at the front of the store a few days ago and was no longer there. I approached the only cashier that was at the front, who was doing nothing but standing at the register, Brenda, and asked her about the item. I started with "excuse me"...she didn't even acknowledge my presence...a little taken back...I continued my question. Without even looking up at me she replied "If it's not there we don't have it anymore. ". I said thank you and moved on. When it came time for me to check out she was the only cashier open. She did not greet me even though I said good morning, she was rude, she was throwing my items around while scanning them, rolling her eyes, placed a box of sterno cans on top of my eggs in a bag, and made sighing sounds through my $200 checkout! BRENDA is NOT the type of person I want to be my first contact in the morning, nor should BRENDA be in customer service!!! I will be taking my business to the Alhambra Smart and Final from now on. I recommend that the store replace BRENDA into a position that she does not have to be face to face with customers! I am so upset by the rude cashier I had the displeasure of dealing with. I was getting checked out and Melba asked if I would like any bags, I said yeah sure, I guess? I told her 2 or 3 trying to guesstimate just how many I needed and then she just threw them at me and said "go ahead." Confused I asked "you don't put my groceries in the bags anymore?" as I looked around and saw other cashiers bagging customers items, but my cashier refused. Then she told me "well how many bags do you need? Are you done? There they are, 3 bags, go ahead." And she threw more bags at me. After a few more seconds of her hostile glare, I finally gave in and bagged my own items. I've never encounter such a rude cashier at any store. I am so disappointed by their service and will not be returning any time soon. read more

The reason I gave this store one star is the cashier ( Rayne Beau ) has a very bad attitude. She thought customer's honesty can be paid by giving the money. It's hurt so I cancelled buying that item ( Rey 12 in plastic wrap ). And get worst, she did not say "sorry" instead she pushed me away with the words and gesture, while I was waiting for her to give my money back ( I know the rule of 6 feet social distancing )... wooww she is very very rude. My honesty is worth more than the price of a wrong place item, which the stocker put. The cashier asked Memo to do price check. I went with him and I showed it where the items are. He fix the items to the right location and he took the picture and he showed it to the cashier. You know the problem here, he did not take a picture BEFORE he fix it. The cashier gave me the lower price, but with an attitude. I was so piss and asked Memo in front of her, "did you move the item first before you took the picture"? and he said "yes". Grocery Shopping Fail. ************************************************************************* Wait, why are the doors locked? Crap! They just told me that the store was closing in fifteen minutes! I didn't know it was fifteen minutes already! K: "Hey you, can you check me out!?! I didn't know I was the last guy here! Sorry!" A young girl clerk ran up an aisle with a phone to her ear. Another clerk was bending over her cash receipt. Both didn't seem like they heard me. I thought - man, they really are in a rush to close down and go home. I looked to my left, on the floor, where I saw a 40ish male clerk (MMC) crouching near the chips. K: "Yo buddy, can you ring me up?" MMC: (mumbling) "Someone just put a gun to my head!" K: (looking at him most closely and clearly not understanding what he said) "You don't look so good. Your face is really red. It's okay. Take your time, buddy!" I finally see that the girl was CRYING while frantically talking on the phone. The older female clerk was HYPERVENTILATING and SHUDDERING underneath the counter. The older male clerk was mumbling not because of poor english, but because he was SCARED. Turns out, (this was overheard, I didn't actually see it) a hooded man with a ski mask went into the store, pulled out a gun, and pointed it at the female clerk, telling her to take out all the money. Then he went to the older male clerk, put the gun to his head, and took the rest of the money in his register. Then the guy ran out while the other customers called 911. Funny enough, another clueless customer came up. Asked MMC if he could ring him up. The MMC, who two minutes seemed close to fainting, got up, registered his code into the machine, and checked the customer out as if the customer could just waltz out the door after paying. Unreal. The police came within 20 mins (I guess the key is to say that the criminal act is "in progress") and cleared the store. Everyone gave a quick statement. And then those who wanted to finish shopping or paying had to wait until the rest of the clerks got their statement in. All this for a freaking 2-liter. I'M QUITTING! read more

OK so where do I start... This place is the closest to their corporate office at the Citadel and it replace the store that was on Olympic / Gerhart... Unfortunately they left the will to work and ability to help at the old place... When I go to this location and stand in the ONLY CHECKOUT line open with five people waiting. I leave disgusted with my visit and when you call corporate to file complaints about their service you get an unsympathetic person and they will never call you back to address your concerns. They need to go back to "the smaller faster warehouse store" over all this location is the worst I have ever been in... do your self a favor go to Costco it will be faster to check out read more

I guess it's been quite a while since I've last shopped here. Heard that a lot of changes were made and decided to give the store another try. The store's been remodeled inside and it looks so much better. The produce is still not all that great. I went in specifically for bananas and what little they had out were a dark green. So I bought other fruits instead and am not too happy with the quality. There's loose bulk item canisters now like those at Whole Foods and I do like the fact that you pour the items straight into a bag rather than shovel them out of bins like those at Sprouts. It's more sanitary. Prices are comparable to both places. The pre-packaged meats in the back are better. Some are packaged on smaller trays which I prefer. Never bought the bigger family packs in the past. I had picked up some chicken that was on sale and noticed that there were two prices (original & sale). Darn, I think I threw away the S&F card years ago. No worries, there were signs saying that cards weren't needed any more. That's a plus! The check-out lines were slow and each had 4-6 customers in line. Reserve cashiers were not called up to help bring the lines down. Now, that hasn't changed from before. Hah. Because I had that extra time to look around, I noticed that each checkstand was named after main streets in Montebello. Beverly, Garfield, Olympic, Whittier, etc. Cute idea. Big store with lots of choices. The fruits and vegetables aren't the freshest, but the prices are great! Lines can be a little long at certain times of the day. And sometimes you have to hunt down carts. But other than that, I love how they have rotisserie chicken, a regular market selection, and uba tuba acai packets :) read more

This place deserves much better reviews then just 3.5 stars. First off this smart & final used to be an albertsons several years ago and a Rite-Aid even before that, until it moved to it's current location across the street in the other shopping center. So let me explain my experience here. Smart & Final has been an interesting store for me. It's not quite a market and it's not quite a costco or sams club. The layout for the store is very similar to the smart & final located just north of Pasadena City College. The exterior and interior of the store has been remodeled and looks very nice for a smart & final. Prices are competitive and are great for getting moderate bulk items such as spoons, straws, ice, etc. However smart & final does not have the bargaining power as wholesale shopping stores such as Costco. (which means you can get more at costco for around the same price) This is the only store that i know of that still carries bulk 5lb tubs of icecream. Costco used to do that but they discontinued stocking bulk 5lb tubs due to the slow inventory turnover. A tub of thrifty icecream was 14.47 or 17.57 for the premium vanilla which is very reasonable for parties. Cost of ice here is very reasonable as 20lb bags of ice are about 3.79 + tax vs $7.25 at eastside ice located south of the 60 freeway but east of the 710 freeway on ford street just off whittier blvd. So rather than driving all the way down to pick up a 40lb bag of ice from them, i can save time and gas and just get it here. Although customer service isn't as welcoming as other supermarkets, the lines weren't long at all. cool stuff smart & final. read more

This Smart & Final store has the absolute SLOWEST and UNFRIENDLIEST cashiers. They seriously need to retrain the cashiers at this Smart & Final. The female manager that wears a ton of makeup is completely useless and doesn't know what the hell she's doing half the time. I gave the store 1 Star because the only ones that are friendly and appear to know what's going on are the associates in the produce department. I have filled out and mailed the survey cards they have at the store and but it's just a waste of time because no action is ever taken so don't waste your time with that. read more

The cashiers are nice and helpful. The store is clean. The aisle are organized in a way that is easy to find what you're looking for.

Do I dare say it? My Costco replacement? Well could be if all you need is food in bulk. It is not everyday I need to gawk at televisions, the latest and greatest Vita mix demonstrations, or walk around and sample things I don't need :) Such as in my neighborhood Costco. If you are looking to buy in bulk fast and efficient this is your stop. In fact I noticed how clean this location was and the shelves were stocked well. I got all the items I needed and in less than 30 minutes! Wow why do I even go to the other shopping markets around here? I'm a regular at this Smart and Final and for good reasons. It's centrally located so it's usually on the way wherever I'm heading locally around town. It's nearby a freeway, gas station, convenient store, pharmacy, bank, tons of restaurants, and other markets. The store has a great variety of food and always fully stocked. The cashier staff are very friendly and almost always have a smile on their faces when they greet me. As we become more progressive in the future, I hope there are eventually self-checkout stalls available without eliminating existing jobs. read more

This is my main grocery store. They open early and close late, even on Sundays. They have a surprising great selection of fruits and vegetables. Prices are reasonable and they always have great sales. It can get busy sometimes, but there's always parking and you can get in 'n' out pretty quick. The staff is always helpful and the stores always clean. read more

This opened up about a month ago and is in the original location of Lucky's market and most recently Albertsons. The store is clean and well stocked and unlike some other grocery stores nearby, they actually seem to have enough people working there so that you are not waiting in line forever. Prices may not be as good as Costco, but still pretty good because it is a little more convenient to go there. The nice thing about this store is that it seems to carry quite a bit of grocery items in standard grocery store size cans and you don't have to buy a whole case of them. read more

Anna Marie the night manager is the best! She is always so helpful and pleasant and treats all of the customers so well! She really looks out for her customers! Jesus is also very nice and helpful and will go out of his way to help you with whatever you need or are looking for. I grew up in the area and used to work at Albertson's. I like this Smart & Final. It's close by, clean and always has plenty of parking. I'm really just writing this to say that if you want the almost-pints of Häagen-Dazs, get it here. I say "almost-pints" because they used to be pint-sized ice creams but Häagen-Dazs didn't think that people would notice when they reduced it from 16 fl. oz. to 14 fl. oz. and still charge the same price, but that's a whole different rant. Anyway, Ralphs in the same neighborhood charges about $5.00 for the almost-pint of Häagen-Dazs while this Smart & Final charges $3.69 for the same thing and has tons more flavors for you to choose from. In fact, Häagen-Dazs makes the BEST green tea ice I've ever had and Ralphs just stopped carrying it last year. But this Smart & Final still has it, among lots of other flavors! read more

Usually items on sale are out of stock by noon of the first day of promotional sales. Also the employee stocking produce (corn today) is very slow and unprofessional. He literally yelled at a customer to wait until he finished stocking the corn before taking any. He was stocking the corn 2 at a time slowly, 1 with each hand, while complaining to other customers. I'm sure the customers had to wait at least 20 minutes before he was done with his task to get their corn. Also, the size of the corns was really small, so the promotional sale price for the corn actually wasn't worth it. read more

I was at this store on Sunday and had the beat experience with two workers. Grace and Melba. I went to buy some flowers and Grace helped me find a good bunch. When I first got to the store, Melba was cleaning up the end caps near the register. Later, while I walked through the store, she must have been going on break but saw me looking somewhat confused and asked if I needed help. I heard someone ask her if she was back from break and she said no, but was still helping me. She was hustling the whole time I saw her. As a manager of a retail store, I know the importance of projecting a positive image. She was very nice, and very helpful. Good customer service is hard to find and she definitely has a great work ethic. Thank you for hiring good employees. read more

I'm super picking about customer service because I have worked in the customer service biz my whole adult life (starting at 16) and I know how to treat customers. This is a complaint letter I emailed to smart and final today: Hi, I will no longer be shopping at smart and final due to your lack of customer service skills. Your cashier Donna was so nice to the big spenders in front of us but when it was are turn to check out she didn't greet us, she asked for the money for the purchase and didn't say please, then while we were searching our wallet for change she held out her hand but turned around to talk to another employee the whole time and never made eye contact. We had to put the money in her hand in order for her to finally turn around and acknowledge us. When we left my husband said 'thank you have a good night' and she didn't say anything in response. She never once said good bye, or thank you OR anything at all. Wow, how do you stay in business? She was easily in her late 50's and should have better manners than that. She had a cross tattooed on her hand, I'm not religious but someone who IS should be nicer than the way she acted. Sorry I wasn't a big spender like the people in front of me but her paycheck isn't determined on how much I spend. I have continued to receive bad service at your store and will no longer be back. Someone opened a register next to us, and rather than taking the next guest in line, he allowed a first come first serve free for all. Hooray for dry ice! It was such a lifesaver before our Coachella trip since we were car camping. 20 lbs for a little under $30 was totally worth it. As far as I know, they're the only place that sells it in the area. They also offer a large variety of ethnic foods here but not a lot of organic options though. Overall, Smart & Final is reminiscent of a large wholesale market (Sam's Club, Costco) with its bulk items but not quite there yet. However there is a bit more value here compared to Ralph's or Von's. Tip: they offer free hand santizing purell wipes right outside the entrance read more

Bad customer service overwhelms everything good at this store. Went in one day to buy some advertised sale items. Saw the item in an endcap fridge near the produce section. There were many varieties offered at the sale price of $1.49. Grabbed two of these and stood in line at checkout. Items scanned at what appeared to be the usual price. I indicated to the male cashier that it was a sale item and it should be $1.49. He indicated that is the price. I repeated that was not the advertised price. In a condescending tone, he points to the screen that displays the price and says, "See this. This is the price and this is what you pay." I said, "No thanks" and walked out.
