Went here during Covid19 and got 2 items - Jameson and a box of paper towels. I have a N95 mask on with gloves and a hoodie and the cashier asks me to remove my mask. I risk contamination and lift it slightly and ask him there's gotta be a better way like checking my ID (even that is risky since I have cash and credit card as backup in a "secure" pocket and don't want to contaminate my wallet). He says that he'd have to ask me to remove my mask anyways even he asked for ID. Then he says that the removal of the mask was optional -- guess the joke is on me and should have walked out. If they ask you, say no and get spirits elsewhere if they're making it difficult as there has to be a better way to check ID -- it's like a POPO asking if they can check you're trunk while in a grocery store. I went to this Smart and Final on November 13, 2020, around 6:40 AM, and I was shopping around, with an item in my cart. Accordingly, an angry manager says "I was staying too long" at the store, and told me to leave, as well as threatening to call the police, despite spending only 20 minutes at the store. One of the employees was also improperly wearing his mask, it didn't cover the nose. Never coming back here ever again. read more

We have shopped a number of times at Smart and Final. We like the large size cashews. They often have good specials on vegetables and meats. its a place to go for specific items, not your major food shopping, but worth it in price and quality. One only has the option of checking out with a cashier, but they try to get you checked out in a timely fashion. read more

We have had spotty luck shopping here. We had to go to Safeway to buy a pint of half and half several times because S&F only stocks a few containers in that size and dairy apparently is only delivered once every ten days or so. We had to go to Lucky's to buy Gephart's chili powder because S&F, though carrying several brands of other products on the shelves, only has one brand of chili powder. We think Gephart's is the best quality. We had to drive to Nob Hill in Mtn. View (a supersized store) to buy unbleached bread flour and all purpose flour in five pound bags. S&F only carries King Arthur unbleached bread flour -- it is the most expensive brand. So, even after paying for the gas to drive 20 miles to Nob Hill round trip for unbleached flours, we save money. We like the fresh produce section with lots of selections. They have good prices on bottled juices such as apple juice or V8. The selection of crackers and cookies is limited. One cellophane package of bakery section chocolate chip cookies had a sell by date four months in the future. The "butter" croissants surprisingly did not list butter as an ingredient. However, we can buy sandwich style sliced bread and large unseeded hamburger buns here but nowhere else. In general, prices here are lower than at Safeway. This is a busy store. There are usually two or three check-outs operating with lines of shoppers at each. The checkers we have encountered are helpful and cheerful. read more

I purchased a boneless pork sirloin in the big bag. It was a good price and discounted due to a sell by date that was 2 days in the future. Upon opening the bag, it was definitely not good meat. It was old, stinky and not fit to eat. I called the store to inquire about a return and was told that discounted products are not eligible for returns. What? It was sold before the expiration date, on their shelves and not backed by a return policy? Not good! What ever happened to customer service, standing behind your products and making sure all shoppers are happy with their purchases? I guess store 779 at 401 Jacklin Road in Milpitas does not have any concern for customers. Just an easy way to sell inferior products without having to take any responsibility for satisfaction. Beware of their bad return policy, bad meat and extremely bad customer service policies. I can definitely say that repeat business from me is not in the future. Grand opening today! It's never been this busy in this plaza until now. Finally another grocery store in the area.

I've been here twice now. I've lived in Milpitas for 25 years, I never came here when it was Nob Hill because the prices were higher. Now I have came to this location twice because I "heard" prices were good. Well only sale items are really a good price. Great selection in every department but based on my two experiences I will continue my shopping elsewhere. First trip was opening weekend- I knew I couldn't judge based on how busy they were or how long the lines were. It was a mad house, people everywhere and shopping isles are really narrow making it hard to navigate. Prices were decent only because it was opening weekend but I should of gone elsewhere just because it gave me anxiety being in this store. Second trip was right now. I went through the line with a beautiful black woman as my check out woman. No hello, no greeting just looked like she hated her job. She asked, "did you bring bags?" Not do you want bags just did you bring them. I said, " No I'll need some". She rings me up throwing my items sort of on a irritated state. Then once I start to pay she starts loading my items in the cart. And I say, I needed bags. She looks at m purely irritated and says, "I asked you said no". I reply, "no i said I needed some". She continues to argue with me and I finally say I JUST NEED BAGS. At this point she's even more frustrated and slams my items in the bags. A check out woman from the register behind me walks into me and pushes me, no apologies NOTHING. The people in line behind me are looking at me stunned. I wasn't asking for free bags! Went to smart and final today. Since cherry was $1.99 so I grab a bag. when got to my car I look at the reciept, it show $3.99. I went back with the reciept to enquire, the cashier call another customer service person to come and assist me. I have to go back to my car to get the cherry because she can not do an adjustment with just a receipt. I told her that the price need to be adjust in their system as other people might have the same issue like me. Without saying she will work on that but instead she reply " it's not our fault, it's the produce people fault because they did not change that". Reply with a bad attitude. This new Smart and Final Extra is located where Nob Hill used to be. They remodeled the inside of the store and it looks nicer than before. I decided to come in today to pick up some groceries since today is their grand opening and they have some really good sales today. Who could pass up bananas at 0.33 cents a pound? Lol. Also they are giving out free reusable bags today and tomorrow only. :) The store is really clean and they have really good deals usually so I will definitely come back to check out their deals in the future. :D read more

A nice addition to my neighborhood! Now that the grand opening crowds are gone, I checked out this store and was very happy with the low prices, good selection, clean appearance, new shopping carts, and friendly staff at this location. This was my first time inside a Smart & Final store. As others have stated, the aisles are narrower than other local stores, so it's best avoid shopping there during peak hours. I visited just before noon on a school day, so there were many high school kids running in to get their soft drink and junk food fix during their lunch hour. The store has good prices for dairy, especially milk by the gallon ($2.59 for First Street brand, and even cheaper if you buy 2 or more) rather than over $3.60 for the same thing at the competitor's stores. Nerd Tip of the Day: By comparing the Dairy Plant number printed on the milk (PLT# 06-407), you'll find that the First Street brand milk comes from the same dairy as the Berkeley Farms brand, so you might as well save yourself some money by using the in-store brand. ;-) This store has a good selection of fruits, though I had to sort through them to find undamaged bananas, apples, etc. And the pineapple from Mexico wasn't so great -- too woody -- but that could be a seasonal issue. Overall, I'm grateful to find a store that offers decent bulk pricing and good selection without the madness and hassle of the Costco shopping ordeal. The employees are always fast & friendly. I appreciate the way they are handling social distancing & every time I am here they seem to be fully staffed and constantly restocking which is nice. I hate having to write bad reviews esp. about the employees and not necessarily the business itself. I frequent this store 1-2 times a week every month since they been open. I used to shop here when it was nob hill... I've been apart of the Milpitas community my whole life as well as my mother and grandmother. I am a care provider for my mother as she can't drive and I'm also an instacart shopper as well. So 90% of the time I'm in this store shopping for someone else. I've had on multiple occasions have delt with two very rude cashiers! One is a heavy set hispanic male and One of which is a heavy set white female cashier which I think her name is "theresa" or that's what it says on my receipt. (Today I got theresa) I have to buy wine for my mother, the wine here is the cheapest out of all the stores in Milpitas... I don't live with my mom so I stock up for her weekly/monthly. 5-6 bottles at a time. Everytime I buy wine here and I happen to get this cashier, she is glaring me up and down and makes rude remarks under her breath. This time specifically, which was today (I am currently 9 months pregnant and came in to buy 3 bottles of wine) yes this may look a little strange that a pregnant person is buying alcohol but again these items are not for me! There were no shopping carts available next to the store so I used a hand held shopping basket. I put the 3 wines in my basket and stood in line at check out ( I usually try to avoid going to her lanes but the poor other cashier had about 8+ people in her lane and no one was helping her) finally another cashier came up, I'm guessing "theresa" and said she could help on aisle 4. I went to her lane and put my basket on the counter. She was helping another lady in front of me. After she was done with her it was my turn, I saw her looking me up and down which made me already feel uncomfortable... I proceed to say "may I please have a bag please" and she goes to say "WOW" in a very rude and Condescending tone... and I asked her "why did you say wow? Do we have a problem?" She tried to answer back "WHAT" very rudely and I just said "Nevermind" . I'm 9 months pregnant and don't feel like getting into a confrontation esp. with other people in front of me and in back of me. Instead of asking me if I needed a bag or asking me if I needed help out to my car , she felt the need to judge me and belittle me. And this isn't the first time. I don't feel like it's her place to make paying customers feel uncomfortable or have a rude tone with people. I called and spoke with a manager tonight because it really bothered me all day and made me feel really embarrassed. The manager said she would talk to the main manager tomorrow about it and have a talk with the employee, I hope this can be resolved because I would hate to take my business else where or have to call corporate. On a brighter note, there is one female employee that is exceptional, has a great attitude and knows why I come in every week buying wine for my mother. As I witness yesterday, an employee who parked their truck in the disabled spot right in front of the store had told a customer, while she was ringing other people and the two lines they had were busy, that he couldn't park in the spot next to her. Yes it said no parking, but as an employee wouldn't you want to service your customer who are disable able to have an easier access to get into the store. Yes there are other disable parking spots, so why not park there as an employee. I don't think it's right to tell an elder customer that you'd call to have a car towed. Why don't you just let them know that it wasn't a parking spot. And from walking by, there would be no way he scratched your truck, there was more then enough space. read more

I'm happy to see a new market opening in the neighborhood but so disappointed in their service. I've been here three times and the lines are always long. Two cashiers the most, and on one occasion, I see the manager comes out, looked at the lines and then walked away. There was about 12-15 people in each line and she didn't even bother to open another register. Not good! I am glad we have this store in milpitas. A net positive to the neighborhood. Their first street store brand provides good value. Priced below average, quality above average, sort of like the costco Kirkland brand. Prices of sale items are good. Other prices are just slightly better than average, but higher than costco or walmart. Shopping here is time efficient. So if what you need is here and you value your time this is the place to go, you can be in and out in 15 minutes to pick up a few items. This store is a net positive to Milpitas, SJ North Valley, and South Fremont shoppers, but we are still waiting for a Trader Joes to open in the area, to increase shopping variety. read more

Produce area is full of crates and stock carts blocking aisles and merchandise while the employees mill about outside of the produce area. Obviously mismanaged. I usually go to Trader Joe's but decided to go to this Smart & Final today (July 2nd, Saturday) since it's closer. I was there around 5:30 - 6 pm. There were two cashiers at the time, one was a male and the other was a female. The female cashier (I forgot to get her name) helped me with the checkout. When I had mentioned I would like the eggs in the bag, she said 'really?' then proceeded to taking some things out of the bag. I could see that she was a bit annoyed but things were still ok at that time. I then tried to help by getting one or two more things out, she took a peek and said , 'oh, you took everything out!' (There were actually still some things in there) to which I responded (very nicely, I can assure you), 'I'm just trying to help'. She seemed very offended and said 'Fine, you do what you want to do. I've only been doing this a few years, I don't know how to do it.' Worse still, when I was finishing up my payment, she asked the next customer, 'Do you have a bag? Do you want ME to do it or do YOU want to do it?' then laughed, as it it was a joke. Omg is this what customer service is? Even if you disagree with me, do you have to give me this attitude? Do you have to have such ego about how to bag things? I've never been treated by anyone like this at Trader Joe's. I will try to avoid her when I come to this Smart & Final again, or maybe just avoid coming back here at all. read more

Not my beloved Nob Hill, but it will do. It is after all, a grocery store. A much needed grocery store where Asian supermarkets dominate 3 to 1. Nob Hill had this corner on lock for close to 30 years and it was amazing to see the neighborhood folk have a send off for the employees when the doors finally closed. It made me remember back in the day when the former walnut orchard was proposed for development into the strip mall that it is now and the protests citing the usual traffic and what not. I wonder how many of those neighbors were originally against having Nob Hill and the strip mall to not only realize the convenience and resource that it is. In the end, Nob Hill was just that, part of the neighborhood where folks came to depend on for the daily needs and groceries. That said, the Smart & Final Extra! that in its place now seems smaller than the former Nob Hill, but much more bigger, or more spacious on the inside. It's the high shelves stocked with goods and the high ceilings that make it look that way. This store is in total contrast with the only other Smart and Final that I ever visited in Mountain View. That store was pretty much no frills and bare bones sort of a prohibition BevMo. Milpitas' Smart & Final has some thought put into it with a touch of whimsy with checkout stands named after streets around town. In terms of product, produce, groceries, I would say it's within reach of most people's budgets and perhaps a tad cheaper than other local grocers when comparing quantities. With the holidays coming up and for those who plan to do some entertaining, I would expect those to find what they need here. There is a pretty good aisle kitchen and restaurant supply that should meet those needs. For what it is, I think of Smart & Final Extra like a commissary for civilians. read more

I've been coming here since the day this S&F opened and I really love getting my groceries here, they have everything I needed. Me and my husband even give one of the cashiers a gift card because she was so nice, very patient helping us with the issues we had at one of the item that we bought. But recently I've noticed that some cashiers are rude and disrespectful with costumers! TODAY the lady that was assigned to put dairy products in the shelves is "very rude!" I understand that this is a very stressful time but PLEASE you don't have to be rude at the costumers! I work in the healthcare system, i come early to get the milk that my family needed because I needed to be at the hospital at a certain time, I'm stressed too but i don't give attitude to my patients! She ask me to come in 10 minutes which is okay, but then when I told her that heres the milk I needed she told me in a very rude tone if voice "don't touch it, no costumers will buy it if you touch it!! Damn! Really? I even thank here for getting the milk for me from the box but her rudeness and attitude is unacceptable!!
