This rating is directed to the Calaveras Blvd Safeway's Bakery Department. I came here in hopes of placing an order for a cake. I envisioned something in heart shaped form, double layers, with white buttercream piping in a clean, vintage design with all of its beautiful girly ruffles & borders. I had purchased a few custom cakes her previously and didn't give coming here a second thought. I was unfortunately met by a younger male who was willing to take my order but couldn't answer any questions about whether or not the bakery department could accomplish my wants/needs. He was short, unfriendly, and not knowledgeable contrary to him working in the bakery. I left without ordering the cake and headed over to the Berryessa Safeway. Until recently, this would be a 4.5 star review. However, now they've put all of the everyday necessities like toothpaste, shampoo, razors, deodorant, pain relievers - EVERYTHING is in LOCKED CABINETS. ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!! I won't shop here anymore. I even ranted at corporate as they were doing an inspection, "Having all these basic necessities locked up is total BS and I won't shop here anymore." "Bu-Bu-But our staff will help you!" Took about 5 minutes for a worker to come unlock the alcohol and walk with us to the cashier, to prevent theft of course. I used to go there frequently but now will stop entirely. I wanted "shaved" Mortadella, and they gave me thick slices. I requested 3 times to make it thinner and finally the clerk said it can not be cut thinner, against their own pictures pasted in front of the counter. I called the deli counter after discovering the slices where to thick indeed. They preytended to not understand my accent. I live here 30 years and everyone understands me usually. Then I called the manager number. She understood me no problem and she said I can bring it back and get a refund. I will not do this but jsut not shop there anymore. Sad experience. It's the only supermarket in the whole city. Therefore it's always crowded as I am sure it was hours ago. I prefer to go during the week when there are fewer folks shopping. Wish I could give it five stars but can't. Some cashiers aren't so nice. Also they rush you so they can serve the next customer. I so hate it. Wish they could wait until I am done. It's just like any normal Safeway. The only positive is the Starbucks isn't always busy. I tend to go there because of the other location across from the adult ed. You get your drink within a few minutes of ordering it. Lastly, there are loiters asking for money when it's against the law in Milpitas. Been asked so many times that I have lost count. Atmosphere - See pictures. Open 7 days a week from 5am to 2am. Huge and clean men's restroom. Plenty of mall parking. Service - N/A, self service Curbside pick up available. Price - N/A on this trip. Last Saturday night ( it was actually 1:17am Sunday morning on 9-13-2026) I was shopping for some special items. I needed them for my brother in law who has tongue cancer. He stays with me for his chemotherapy treatments at Stanford as he lives out of town. I started shopping around 12:00 am. The floral department looked horrible. The rounds had empty buckets all the way around on each level. So, no flowers for the patient. I spent about an hour on selecting drinks that wouldn't burn his throat, and got some easy to swallow food items. When I was done shopping I phoned EBT to check the balance. The checker rang up my groceries. I swiped my EBT card and it used it all and I still had a balance to pay. I went to pay the balance with my bank debit card. I believe the cashier then voided the transaction before I entered my card. End result I had my groceries all bagged ready to go. The balance due wasn't there, yet $91.80 from my EBT showed paid with a $0.00 balance on my receipt. Their only solution since the transaction voided was to re-ring up my groceries. Now please tell me, how is that going to work out for me when they already took my money from EBT. Their voided transaction didn't return my money to my EBT. I was told it would in 24hrs. I was pissed, I just spent 1 hour picking out special items. Now they want to charge me again. They wouldn't let me just pay the balance take my groceries. I told them if the amount gets credited back to my card because they voided the transaction, that they can call me and I would come back and pay it. They said they could not do that. I went home with nothing. I had no groceries and no balance on my EBT. The next day (Sunday) I look up this situation no credit to my EBT, and I call the store and ask for a manager. Of course he is not there, he is at lunch. He returned my phone call at approx. 4:30ish. I got no notification that he called so I called again (Monday) he was there and told me he did leave me a v.m. Then he explains that it takes 72 hours for the monies to be automatically credited after a voided transaction. He should have just not lied to me. It is now 4 days later and no credit. My guest has come and gone. I just got off the phone with EBT filing my dispute. Now I just want all of you to know, I have been shopping here since the store was built. I am a long time resident and this is the only store near my house. I expect a store to make accommodations for certain loyal customer that support their store. I believe this store has such a high turnover, they don't even know who those people are, so how can they give service. I mentioned several ways they could handle their error of voiding my transaction when I was in the middle of paying for it. Just so I could take my groceries home for my guest. Then to let them know I was serious. I told them that if I could not leave with my groceries at that time ( it was as couple of minutes before 2:00a.m.) I would never shop in this store again. I would never recommend the store and would tell others how inconvenient and unaccommodating the store is. I did leave the store with no groceries. I even went back after hours because they did not give me a receipt for all the time of mine they wasted. I did not get out of the parking lot until 2:15 a.m. For a large supermarket chain to make such an error and not be accountable for it is terrible. They just took $91.80 from my EBT and kept me from getting the groceries I needed. To get the monies back they want me to show them the proof that it happened. Doesn't their register show that $91.80 was collected from an EBT on a receipt. Then when that transaction is voided, it should have put that register out of balance. As far as I am concerned they are stealing California Benefits that people need and pocketing the monies. Who is going to get fired when EBTs dispute comes in and they have to account for the money. I will be writing Corporate about this issue Ya'll been warned. Be careful and be safe. read more

Avoid the deli area at all costs... trust me ... don't do it. Waited an hour even though there was only 3 people in line including myself for some sliced deli meats. The lady working today around 5 literally took 45 minutes to slice up some meat. Each slice took her a total of 2 minutes. One gentleman decided she took forever and needed a bathroom break, comes back assuming his place in line was already set just to deal with people yelling at him because he cut them. He did not and even explained that it's not his fault that he waited, used the restroom and came back and she still wasn't done slicing a pound of meat ... I can understand the frustration from all sides and I can say without a doubt (been going here for 12 years) that the deli department at this specific Safeway is trash through and through. It's been some time, so an update is needed! Definitely one of your busier Safeways especially the Saturday before Super Bowl. Multiple lanes were open as well as self check out line was long but moved along fine. Parking was a situation but it is a large lot so thank goodness for that. Stock was a little empty in the dairy area. I don't understand why the mascarpone cheese isn't in the cheese section, but it's ok. I ended up looking in my app to see where it could be. Unfortunately, not sure why, I don't know how to change my "home" location. It used to be straight forward but I couldn't figure it out at the end and I just assumed where it was in a different Safeway, would be the same in another Safeway. Thank goodness it was true. Easily checked out at the self check out. Thank goodness I had a coupon from $5 off of groceries otherwise it would've been much higher for just a few items. I was a little shocked. I went to Safeway today to get some salmon, I really don't know what's going on with the customer service, it took at least 45 minutes for someone to come and assist me. I called the store phone number while I was waiting if someone would pick up the call because they don't have a bell to ring by the meat place. I could hear the voice coming from the intercom, but no one answered. I waited some more, even knocked on the counter and still no answer. Then I had to go to the front and ask to speak to someone so they can come and help. When I finally got the help, I asked the young fellow if they had a bell and he said no, we took it off. Then he put the fish inside a plastic bag! I asked the young lady that came from the front if they didn't put the fish in a tray like before, and she said no. what is the purpose of putting the seasoning on the fish if its going to be all over the bag but not the fish? Absolutely disappointed with the store. On the other side the broccoli looks so bad and ready to put in the garbage but still they had it for $3.99 a pound? So sad to know customer service and the product are going really bad!! On top of it They had long lines with only two cashiers open. I asked to speak to a manager to show the bag where the guy put the fish, but no one was around except for the young lady and the young fellow in the cashier, laughing out. While exiting one of the customers said: it's looking more like Walmart but with Safeway prices. That's really bad! Came to the store with my grandfather to get meat for a family event. He had Asked a simple question about a specific piece of beef and in response all he got was attitude and disrespect from the manager. My grandfather is an older Asian gentleman. I had noticed that another customer had asked for the same piece of meat my grandfather had asked for and I heard a whole different type of attitude from the meat manager. Keep in mind the other customer was white. Starting to think this manager is a racist. Other past times I've been in the store I always hear him yelling at his employees!! They have a nice Starbucks inside with good seating inside. One can get their caffeine fix before or after shopping. Oh my gosh, I couldn't believe my eyes! There was a white guy who was on his motorbike inside of the store today around 4:00 pm!!! He almost hit me with the wheels... He was looking for something, and even went to self check out. A staff told him "Oh sorry...you can't bring your motorbike here." Wait what? Sorry?? Let him get out of the store immediately! Review for Safeway deli area roast drumsticks and thighs; it is usually I look at it and see everything I want in good cooking, color and seasoning in a pan of meat juice. And while it's not perfect, I'm satisfied every time I get an order. I make an effort to grab an order when they have 5$ 8pc deal on their ad on Fridays With no deal it costs around 4-5$ for a drum and thigh which was still plenty satisfying for a meal. But as a bonus, as I see it; the pieces are placed in a heated pan to keep it bacteria free, I imagine it's hot enough to be slow cooking there even after it comes out of the oven so it can become very tender if they sit around for a while. Had a very bad customer experience sadly at this Safeway where i have been coming for years. I was purchasing a visa gift card yesterday and the transaction wasn't completing freezing the payment system. The guy at counter called their supervisor for help. They shifted us to another system where the same thing happened. Eventually i decided to buy a different gift card and the supervisor helped me buy it and it all worked this time. What was disheartening was the supervisor's sarcastic comment at the end that "man you caused a lot of problems and delays today ". This Safeway is nice and clean, also very spacious. No problem walking down the isles with another shopping cart coming towards me unlike some of the stores I had experienced. Conveniently located inside the town center plaza. I also like this location because they have an Olyns recycle machine there where I can just recycle my water bottles there by the entrance. Parking is always easy at this location. However, most of the times, promotional items are either unavailable or sold out. On November 20th earlier this evening at around 6:00 p.m. I finished shopping I was paying for my food and I decided to get $60 cash back there were some items that were 50% off and I had to get the manager to come make the adjustment. So then after that happened, I totally forgot about the $60 that I had taken out! so I guess it was just hanging out there somewhere.... Anyway Maria who's an associate manager there at the Milpitas Safeway on 555 East calaveras was amazing. She was able to get that money and hold on to it for me. Many years ago this was a good Safeway but ever since Albertsons bought it it has gone way down hill. The bathrooms are always super dirty. But the biggest issue is they typically only have 2 check stands open! I was there the day before Thanksgiving. 2 lanes open! This isn't just a holiday issue every Weekend or any busy time constantly huge long lines! The worst part is they have checkout people working they just either don't call for help or the checkout people just never stop stocking shelves. There's a cashier named Jerome here and he's genuinely the rudest man I've ever encountered at a grocery store. I'm not saying employees have to have small talk with customers, but at least don't greet people with an immediate attitude upon arrival. It's impossible to avoid him when I can't purchase certain items through self check out, and he is the only cashier working some nights.
