I wish 3.5 stars was an option because that's where I'm at with Smallcakes.. but I'll give the benefit of the doubt and rate a 4. Finally had a chance to stop in on a Saturday afternoon. There was one person inside when we arrived and another couple entering when we left. It's nice that it wasn't crowded because the entry is small. I was very excited when I walked in to see all the yummy flavors and pretty cupcakes which were decorated so neatly. We tried the weekly specials - cookie butter cheesecake and fruit tartlet - along with the carrot cake and Oreo flavors. I thought the cake was somewhat moist, thankfully it wasn't crumbly or dry and the flavor was good. I'm not a huge fan of cake icing and usually discard 80% of it. I probably ate less of this icing since I found it to be dense and thick. The cupcakes were decent, but not as expected given the hype. Ordered my birthday cake from here and was very satisfied. The cake decoration was exactly like the photos I sent them. It was ready on time communication for ordering was very clear. The cake OMGGG the icing? Superb. The cake was so delicious and everyone at my birthday asked where the cake was from. I got chocolate with buttercream. Yelpers gave this place high reveiws so we figured we'd give it a go. And boy am I glad we did. My poison - a dark chocolate cupcake uh I mean smallcake with vanilla buttercream filling and dark chocolate buttercream frosting with a smidge of white buttercream on top. My hubby's poison - a peanut butter cup thingamajiggy (technical term) that he evidently enjoyed since - IT'S ALL GONE. LOL While the parking lot can be a bit challenging it's still worth the trip. The staff was particularly friendly and the place is ever so cheerful. My son just got his first place and I am hosting a house-warming annnnnnd I will be serving these cute little confections for the event. :) The cake is moist - the frosting not overly sweet - and it could be two servings for sure. I love reading reviews of successful small, local businesses and all of the great things in Charlotte and surrounding. God only knows how many great businesses and restaurants I've discovered on Yelp thanks to all the thoughtful people who write about their experiences. Despite this, every once in a while I run across some of the worst people who trash a business for all the wrong reasons. So without further ado, my visit to Smallcakes and this review is inspired by Heather M. who was kind enough to post a picture of ruined cupcakes that allegedly was the business's fault. Spoiler alert: there's no way it was their fault. I walked in to Smallcakes tonight a mere hour before closing time but was met by a very friendly staff who took the time to walk me through the cupcakes. Despite the late arrival, everything on the menu was available. I got four total cupcakes, two for me and two for my wife, and was out the door in a couple of minutes. The cupcakes themselves are a little pricey at $3.75 each, but from first impressions it looks like a lot of detail goes into each one and they opted for a dressier style box highlighting their brand in a vibrant, hot-pink fashion. We got our cupcakes from the parking lot in Huntersville back home in North Charlotte and, surprise surprise, our cupcakes were perfectly fine! If you look closely at the pictures, they put an insert in the box that cradles each cupcake and hold them about 1/3 of the way up. By no means would it be impossible for them to jostle around, but it would be quite difficult. I pulled my two cupcakes out as soon as we arrived home. The carrot cake cupcake was perfectly moist and not only had a great flavor, but great texture as well. The icing on top was a very smooth cream cheese icing that was perfect for the carrot cake. I don't know if dense is the right word, but maybe heavy, it was a very filling cupcake which when paired with the high quality flavor, make the price tag a little easier to stomach. Red velvet was great as well. Pair the same cream cheese icing with a red-colored chocolate-flavored cake that had a little more bitterness than your average red velvet in the best way possible. So again, friendly folks, great "designer" cupcakes, and quality branding that makes people go "Wow!" when they see that box. Is that almost-four-dollar price tag worth it? Yes, I would say so! It's hard to argue against 'em when the most successful ice cream shop in Charlotte is charging $5 for a scoop! If you've got this far down, take a look at Heather M's picture and tell me how in the world it is Smallcakes fault for that, the cupcakes literally jumped out of the holder in the box. As frustrating as that is, I'm glad I saw it and gave this place a chance because it's a great little shop that's making superb desserts. Consider me a smallcakes believer. read more

So I started to follow Smallcakes on Instagram, but I had not had them yet. I was very much interested in trying as it seemed like they had a great array of flavors! Well one day I noticed that they posted that they would be having a peach cupcake for the week! My favorite fruit! It was a peach cupcake, with peach icing, and a peach topping. I was unable to get up to the Huntersville area as I live in South Charlotte, but my aunt who lives up in the north area was coming by our home that Saturday so I asked her to swing by on Friday afternoon to pick me up two of the peach cupcakes! I was that excited and that hopeful for it being a very peachy goodness of a cupcake! The cupcake was great, it was moist, had a great icing to cupcake ratio (some might say too much but I love icing!). However, and this is a big however, it was not peachy at all except the topping. If you just handed me this cupcake and I tried to taste the cake and icing part alone, I would have never known. It was a nice sweet cupcake and had good flavor, but there was a huge miss on the peachiness. Very big disappointment for wanting a very peachy cupcake! Minus one star for failing on the flavor. The cupcakes are messy to eat and messy to travel with - do not travel very well just from the north side to the south side of Charlotte. Not sure what the issue is, but clearly some others have had this same issue from their pictures. It's almost if they need to thicken up their icing just a tad. I've not seen such issues with other cupcakes places. Overall a good cupcake, but I'm not jumping up to go try them again. I might if I were in the area. read more

I order an Oreo Buttercream and my Hubby got Peanut Butter cup. It was love at first bite. You can tell it's actual buttercream and not that thick fondant. And they were so MOIST. Omg. Nothing is more annoying than a business that nickel and dimes it's customers. Desserts in general are already overpriced and the fact that they decided to literally cut the size of their cupcakes in half is so typical of the city of Charlotte. This city will try to pinch every penny it can from its customers and I realized that today when I bought a cupcake and it was soooooooo tiny it fell all the way to the bottom of the box even past the cupcake holder inside it was so small! Came on a Tuesday. The woman behind the counter was standoff-ish but helpful. She wasn't bubbly and didn't offer a sincere greeting or welcome to the store, but she did answer our questions. We got 12 cupcakes for my birthday for $36 which was the same day. She didn't ask why we wanted the cupcakes. Those small questions boost customer service. A "Happy Birthday" would have been really nice. The cupcakes are SOOO moist! And the icing is creamy and sweet. I loved the cupcakes and they were a great conversation piece at my party. Through Yelp, I stumbled upon the local bakery that specializes in cupcakes. I wandered in on Wednesday near closing time. There was an abundance of options and the person in front of me noted that the calendar on the counter stated that it was $3 Wednesday. I don't think it's every Wednesday, just certain ones. Anyhoo, I chose 4: lemon, pink vanilla, salted caramel, and carrot cake. I wasn't blown away by the flavor in any of them. They were slightly above grocery store quality. Not quite as dense. Also, the flavors didn't taste fresh. The lemon for example didn't taste as though they used a fresh squeezed lemon in it. The cake on all of them are the same, with the exception of the carrot cake and the frosting was the only distinguishing item in regards to the flavors. I could use less sugar in the frosting too. In this world of "high end" cupcakes, for $4.00 at least the cupcakes are oversized, but $3 is appropriate for what I was getting. The venue is cute and the owner was very pleasant. This is a franchise, so I doubt she can tweak the recipe, but if she can add distinct flavors to the batter. read more

At four dollars per it is a little more expensive than many of their competition and their selection is somewhat smaller. The woman who waited on me was very friendly and the boxes the cakes were put into were of a higher quality presentation than most. But what topped the cake, so to speak, was the quality of the cupcakes. They were absolutely delicious, flavorful. And so soooo rich I felt like I had robbed the bank. Brand new Cupcakery I discovered on vacation. They had about 12 or so different cupcakes each with a healthy dollop of buttercream icing. Each cupcake is around 3.50. The customer service was great and with a smile. She gave me a couple recommendations and they didn't disappoint. I picked a half dozen and ate a couple. The first cupcake I had was the peanut butter cupcake which was fantastic. It wasn't too sweet and tasted like a peanut butter cake. The buttercream was smooth and creamy. I also had the cookies and cream cupcake which was also great. I'm not sure how they make the buttercream taste like cookies but it was fantastic. On my way to Verde in the same plaza, I noticed that the bakery was still open. Usually when I'm near, it's way past closing hours. I glance in the big windows from my car and it appears that all the cupcakes were sold for the day, since it was almost 8pm. I get out my car for a closer look. It has been over a week since I've forked over money in ANY bakery around town, so the sugar monster inside egged me on to get a little closer. As I'm near the door I see there are a few left on the various stands. There were about 20, and approximately 5 or 6 flavors available. I chose 2 chocolate cream with vanilla filling and two more chocolate flavors, one with vanilla on top, the other with chocolate. There is a lot of space for seats and a play area for children. I can't say that I've ever eaten cupcakes in any shop, I'd rather stuff my face in the privacy of my own home. But if you have more self control than I do, there is room for a few groups of people to enjoy their treats. Later that evening, while savoring my first big bite, I told myself that subsequent trips to Huntersville meant I should stop in again and again. They are a healthy size, moist and not overly sweet. I'm a cupcake aficionado and was excited to find a new cupcake headquarters since my move to Charlotte. Unfortunately, this is not going to be it. First issue was that half of the flavors I ordered had to be substituted. My second issue was the amount of frosting compared to the size of the cupcake, and third was the taste. My kids threw out their cupcakes after one bite. I got two bites in and called it quits. The Vanilla with vanilla buttercream tasted like a Duncan Hines yellow cupcake, so good but not great. The peanut butter cupcake's frosting tasted too much like fake peanut butter flavor.
