A fantastic late night snacks & drinks experience! I arrived Saturday night around 11:30pm, after getting out of a show at Plush a couple blocks away. I was pretty amazed to hear they serve the full menu until 12:45 (they close at 1). Just being able to have a high-quality restaurant experience that late is a huge plus. There were a few parties in the restaurant and some nice music was playing. We grabbed a seat at the bar. Our bartender/server girl was friendly and attentive, and even brought us out a little amuse-bouche which was really flavorful. First snack item was the bruschetta ($8 for 6 pieces) w/ pistachio, mint, apricot, and brie. This was amazing! The flavors went together really well, and the mint was a stroke of genius. I highly recommend this! Next up, the Frito Misto ($9), an array of tempura-fried veggies (broccoli, asparagus, zucchini and more) with 2 dips, a chimichurri and a garlicky sauce. This was also delicious and really well put together. Since the food was so good, I decided to indulge in a bourbon-based cocktail, The Smokysweet ($9), which used smoked cherries and rhubarb soda & bitters. It came in a tall-glass and was really delicious. This place has a great atmosphere...perfect date spot or just a gathering place in general. I have yet to meet a Dave Bailey restaurant I don't love, and Small Batch is no exception. If I could move into this space, I would. It is beautifully decorated with original floor tiles, marble topped cast iron tables, the most amazing custom wallpaper ever, and a huge beautiful bar with a massive mirror. I would use pretty much everything in here in my house. Once I got over gawking at the decor, I looked at the menu. Pages and pages of whiskey. It's overwhelming, and I mostly had no idea what I was looking at. Next time I'm sitting at the bar and begging the bartender for help; I'm whiskey clueless and I want to be educated dammit. I ended up going with a beer, which like all Bailey places came from a meticulously curated beer list. Then there's the food. And it's all vegetarian. And it all looks delicious. Of our group of 4 there was one carnivore (me, though I really don't eat much meat), two vegetarians, and one vegan. My boyfriend and I started with the sweet potato fries which were great (but I kind of wish I had ordered with my burger) and our friends got the bread and jam plate which they raved about. For dinner I had the burger, which was delicious, but a bit heavy (I almost preferred the cold leftovers the next day). Also at the tables was the gnocchi, pho, and carbonara. The pasta dishes were definitely the stand outs. My only real complaint food-wise is that mushrooms are featured heavily on the menu and I am not a mushroom fan. (I know, I know, I need to just suck it up and try them in a really good dish). I'm looking forward to going back and trying some whiskey cocktails and one of the desserts that we sadly didn't have room for. read more

Ok so this is hands down my favorite restaurant in St. Louis. I'm a vegetarian and I feel like vegetarian restaurants are a hit or miss, unless they're a specific cuisine rather than generic "vegetarian" but boy oh boy, this place is a-ma-zing! The first time I went here, I was such a happy girl! The food was delicious, the drink was not bad (I had been a little too ambitious with what I ordered), and then came the dessert... and my friends, if you ever eat here and the dessert menu includes the Chocolate orange espresso creme brulee, please do yourself a favor and order it! It is one of best things I've ever had the good fortune of putting in my mouth! I no longer live in St. Louis and my biggest regret was not being able to order this during my last Small Batch visit as it was no longer on the menu. It was a sad day indeed. Every time I've been here, it's been with non-vegetarians and they have always loved their food just as much as I have. The tacos seem to be a big hit (I love them too, but I try to order a new thing every time) so it could be a good place to start if you're not sure what you want to order. One of my friends said he wouldn't have known he was eating a vegetarian meal if no one had said anything! Also, if you're a whiskey fan, or know one, add this place to your list. I've been here with a whiskey aficionado friend and he seemed to like it. So I assume it's good stuff. And oh, I almost forgot - the chef always sends out an amuse-bouche and oh my, does it amuse your bouche! Another amazing experience here! I took a friend for his birthday this past Saturday. The best cheesecake in town, hands down. Everything was so good, I forgot to even attempt a photo of it. Kyle was our server and he was very knowledgeable and was ready with a recommendation as soon as asked. Beware their cocktails! Such a party in the mouth you will forget you drinking alcohol. Next time I will have to try one of their whiskey flights. 10/10 will eat again! read more

Such an amazing intimate space- great Reno maintaining the vintage industrial vibe- and without hipster bartenders. I really wanted to love this place, but it was so disappointing from a food perspective. :( great concept- impressed that a vegetarian-only restaurant was elevated to such a cool level, but it failed in execution. We ordered a round of whiskey cocktails- my friend the Kombucha sour, which was good, tart as expected. I had the smokey sweet, definitely both smokey and sweet, but how desperately I wanted a salty slice of crispy bacon to swizzle in the drink to round out the flavor! I ordered the greens salad, which sounded delicious: smoked Gouda, pretzel croutons, spiced walnuts, smoked cherries, maple blueberry vin. The salad was good, but it had shredded mozzarella (?) instead of smoked Gouda, and rye bread croutons instead of pretzel croutons. It threw off my expectations for the salad, but it was good. Just surprising replacements. We also ordered the bruschetta. Almond-coated brie, bourbon apple compote, crispy sage and served with pesto crostini. Sounds like a lot going on here, but the flavors were all flat. Too subtle. And the brie was not melted in the middle, so unspreadable. My friend ordered the rigatoni special, which was good, but the pasta not quite cooked enough and kind of chewy. The biggest disappointment for me was the gnocchi. Sweet potato, toasted pecans, bourbon cherries and sage brown butter. Sounds amazing, right? Well, they decided to pan fry the gnocchi, overcooking it to the point where it was dry in the middle and had to be cut with a steak knife. I feel like I should't have to cut gnocchi with I knife :( The mastication involved in consuming said gnocchi gave me TMJ. Well, not really but it would have if I ate the whole bowl. The other problem was that underneath the dry mini-fried-chicken-tender-appearing gnocchi, were other gnocchi drowning in oil that was supposed to be brown butter sauce. The flavor of the rest of it was ok, just not flavor-ful. However, it was inedible due to the chewing commitment that would be involved plus the fact that the oil overdose would surely contribute to anal leakage later! Too harsh? Yay! I'm a fan. They do what they do best, small batch whiskey. The ambiance is very nice, a bit dark. Parking upfront was easy to find. The music (Pink Floyd?) and darkness combined for a downbeat feel that was a bit depressive in comparison to our awesome rooftop vibe we had coming from Eclipse in the Loop. We passed on trying the food and left in search of a more cheerful venue. P.S. They no longer feature the sweet potato fries that are raved about in the reviews. read more

David Bailey strikes again! YASSSS! We came here for a girls night last month and I didn't want to make a scene at the time, but i think I ate the best pasta I have ever had in my life. Okay, okay...like top 5! But still! I've had a ton of pasta in my day. I ordered the Rigatoni...spiced and seasoned beautifully with a cajun cream sauce. Their pasta is made in house- which makes a huge difference to any palette. It was a party in every bite- with plenty of asparagus, mushrooms, spinach. Huge portion for $12?? I know some other hyped up pasta places in town charging $20 for barely mediocre variety, taste, and portions. Okay so now that i've gotten that out of my system...in a nutshell: We started with the poutine and bruschetta- both good starters. It's a vegetarian based restaurant with a couple options for meat-lovers. Ambiance is romantic and contemporary. Cute little loft style seating upstairs. Pages upon pages upon pages of whiskey options. Service was great- just knocking every category out of the park. I have to go once more before ranking Small Batch 5 stars, which will hopefully be sooner rather than later! read more

Tried this place out with friends on a Sunday night. No trouble getting a table, hope to see them busier in the future. Service was excellent and friendly, very accommodating to my friend's tomato allergy. We started with a small bite (an amanbuche, so?). A tasty little tortilla with house made salsa and cheese I believe. This was complimentary. After perusing the extensive drink list I opted for a Mezcal Old Fashioned, friends tried the Manhattan, Rickey and a whiskey flight. After lots of sharing I think my favorite was the Rickey with its lemonade flavors hiding the alcohol. On many yelp recommendations we started with the pomme frites (sweet potato fries). These were outstanding and the house made mayo for dipping was delish! A friend ordered the stoplight eggs which were interesting in their varying flavors. For main course, I had the Gnocchi, others had Carbonara, pompardelle, a rigatoni dish, the veggie burger with rooster sauce and a couple starters (egg rolls and the carmalized grape dish). Everyone seemed pleased with their selections and I was impressed with the variety of flavors for such a small menu. Even though we were stuffed we shared a bread pudding and an order of vegan ice cream with berry compote amongst most of us. The bread pudding was surprisingly light and had a great orange flavor. We visited here with my vegetarian parents around the holidays. The atmosphere is FANTASTIC and charming to say the least. The service was quick, informative, attentive and overall amazing. We ordered about 5 dinner menu items. We really enjoyed the food - the chef did a very good job creating delicious and flavorful vegetarian dishes. The only reason I am giving this place 3 stars is because the food was very salty...all of our dishes were a little heavy-handed when it came to salt. Our favorite dish was the pad thai - mostly because it had the best flavors and the least amount of salt. We did not try the alcohol but there were quite a few people there enjoying that part of the restaurant. I would definitely give this place another try at some point in the future. read more

Yes there is another place that has whiskies in CWE, but Small Batch is where they know their drinks and also are friendly enough to give you some time and chat with you about what they have. Or if you just want cocktails, they have a decent list, though not too extensive as they are mainly about whiskies. On the food side, everything is vegetarian and I would never have guessed. The items on the menu are quite good and I'm not vegetarian, Try whatever sparks your interest as just about all of the items are good. The ambiance of the joint is a little prohibition era and the upstairs is a nice touch. The crowd is definitely more of a hip one and you'll probably see some classy looking people. Only odd thing is that it's in an odd spot of town. Big recommend! read more

Only been here for brunch so for so my experience may have been different than the typical visit but this place really makes a great impression. Beautiful design and and classic 30's fixtures and styling draws you in and sets high expectations of attention to detail that the menu and food coming out of the kitchen definitely live up to! I had the banana blueberry French toast which was delicious and although I don't remember what my companions had exactly I do recall that after a quick tasting I was confident that none of us were feeling the infamous "order envy"!, lol. Everything on the table was tasty and we all left satisfied and not missing the meat as all 3 of us can be predisposed to feeling at times. Every aspect of this restaurant speaks to an intentional design and it all works! Of course since we came for the brunch now of us sampled the extensive whiskey selection for which they are known (give us a pass, 10am on a Sunday) so a return later in the day for another meal is definitely a requisite in my mind. The is the New Hipster, a grander, cooler take on the local hot spot located in a down-on-its-luck neighbourhood that's slowly, inexorably being gentrified against it's will. It's wrought iron and moon globes, high stools and dark wood, frighteningly comprehensive whisky list and modern vegetarian takes on bar food and pasta and - yes! - pickled eggs. My sour cherry cocktail was laced with homemade rhubarb soda, my vegetarian tacos had crisped avocado, my linens were so crisp and white I wanted to order a shirt made out of them to wear to fundraisers and such. Great. Go. Take friends. Impress them that you know about such places. read more

Everything about this place reminded me of restaurants in New York City. From the thoughtful decor and plating to the 10 pages of alcohol options, I loved the entire experience here. The menu as of now features only meatless options but it is still flavorful and worth it. We had the stoplight eggs, which I highly recommend. The person I was with ordered a black bean stuffed pepper that was on special and you would've never known it was meatless. I ordered a pasta dish with olives and tomatoes and it was delicious. Coincidentally, the "fare" is vegetarian, but you wouldn't notice. I am not a vegetarian but I come here often just for the food, it really is that good. The menu has shrunk and last night they were out of three things on it--no salad and no lettuce wraps--at 5:30 p.m. on a Saturday night. This cute, spacious location was so good! Usually places like this can get packed, have really small portions, etc. This place was perfect. Our server was attentive. The cocktail list was short enough but long enough for something to catch your eye. All $8-11. The menu is small, but enough to give you some options. We opted for the buffalo cauliflower which was tangy, spicy, and the rangoon which was pretty standard. The cauliflower I would highly recommend especially for a bigger group. For entrees for a group of 5 of us, we got the pad thai, rigatoni, and gnoochi. I can't choose which is my favorite!! The pad thai was seriously amazing like better than thai restaurants. The rigatoni had that cajun spice with such a kick to it, and the gnoochi simply melted in your mouth. UGH I need to go back to St. Louis just for this place!! Again, all of that was totally enough to satisfy us. With drinks, the total came to $25/person which is pretty reasonable to me. The only thing is that nothing on the drink menu really popped out to me.. it was just affogado and cheescake and stuff. read more

Had dinner here before a show at the Fox Theater. We were running late due to an accident and had tickets for the theater. The server was made aware of this and was great about getting us out in time. We had the bruschetta and it was amazing. They give a large piece of Brie cheese and it is paired perfectly with toast and fruit / honey. We also had the ferment and pickled app- also beyond expectation. The kimchi packed a punch but was tasty. The apps are perfect tasting and the meals are good sizes. Don't let the name fool you. Tacos were amazing and just tastes fresh. All dishes were left with clean plates and a commitment to come back. Do not let the vegetarian aspect deter you from this place if you are not used to vegetables. It is amazing for all. Atmosphere was very cool, vintage feeling. The price was reasonable as for 3 apps, 5 drinks and 4 entrees the bill was under $130. I should preface this by saying I am not a vegetarian or vegan and I more than enjoyed my meal here. I had friends come in town and this restaurant came highly recommended. The restaurant itself was nicely decorated with low lights. Our wait was almost an hour, and there were more than a few open tables, but once seated things went smoothly. I am not a fan of meat substitutes so I ordered the etoufee sans the seitan, which the waitress warned me against because it provided smokiness to the dish. Even without the seitan, the dish was still full of flavor. My guests both ordered the carbonara and they really enjoyed their dishes, with no leftovers. Came here for an early Valentines Day dinner with my vegetarian partner to try something new and I was super excited about the normal meat menu items they offered that they turned into vegetarian meals. I am not a vegetarian, but I do enjoy meatless and plant-based meat options because the creativity that is put into these meals is extremely impressive to me! We first ordered the rangoon which was delicious. There was obviously not any crab included, just cream cheese and they were place on top of a spicy mustard and hot sauce that complemented them well. I ordered Khao soi as my main entree. It was tasty and made with tofu as the protein. Super spicy, so if you're not into spice, try something else! My partner ordered the carbonara which was sooooo good and extremely cheesy. Our cocktails were great as well. I think this would also be a nice place just to grab a couple drinks with a friend. I've been here twice now for dinner. The menu is limited but I've been pleasantly surprised both times. Most recently I ordered the arugula salad with sherry vinaigrette dressing and the pineapple cream cheese rangoons appetizer. Beautifully plated and delicious. 100% vegetarian menu with many vegan options. I also got a dessert that was vanilla ice cream and brownie and espresso, forget the name, but it was amazing! **Our service was pretty terrible. After pouring water and describing specials, our server disappeared for 25 minutes. We could actually see her chatting to a table of customers outside while they ate through almost their entire meal. To be clear, this review does not take the service into account, because once she realized how long we had been waiting, she roundly apologized and comped our apps without us asking. She did her due diligence, for sure. On a friend's recommendation, my husband and I brought my parents here when they visited from out of town. My mom tends to be quite a picky eater when meat is involved (though not officially a vegetarian), and my dad had a kidney removed earlier this year (working a low-sodium diet tends to just be easier with no meat). My husband and I each got a whiskey (though the very whiskey/veggie combination feels not quite right to us), and this was the better part of our experience. In particular, the whiskey service was novel and attractive. Dude ordered whiskey with a splash of water, so his glass of whiskey was served with an antique-looking eye dropper bottle of water. He probably over-watered his whiskey because the dropper was so fun. I ordered mine on the rocks, so my glass was accompanied by a tiny ice bucket. Our apps were yummy though over-priced. We had the Rangoon ($9), which came with 3 pieces. So for a table of 4, we already had to do some splitting up. We also did the cauliflower with the buffalo sauce, and everyone liked this. The portion was bigger and easier to share, and the cauliflower was crisp on the outside and toothsome on the inside. We should have left after apps. My dad and I both got the Tacos. These were good, and luckily, we both like spicy food. The "chipotle crema" was surprisingly spicy, to the point where a note on the menu does not seem uncalled for. Dude got the Linguini, which was bland bland bland. The lemon zest was virtually undetectable, and the dish was in desperate need of some parmesan. The pasta was also just on the overcooked side. My mom got the Relleno, which was a thorough bummer. The zucchini was okay, but the red grits were bland and mushy, and the bell pepper wasn't seasoned at all. It was just its sweet self with no balance, even with the chihuahua which may as well have been absent for all it contributed. I'd go back for the whiskey and apps if someone made me (and paid!), but I am very sorry I took out-of-town guests here. read more
