Good sourdough bread usually requires a bit of a drive, but the Small Axe Bread popups are really convenient. Both the Garden Grove (on Main St. across from Costco) and Tustin locations have easy and ample parking. Their sourdough bread has a prominent tanginess and the flavors are easily distinguishable. I've tried the miso onion, cinnamon golden raisin, buckwheat sesame, asiago and calabrian chili. The savory ones are a tad too salty, but they pair well with unsalted butter. Miso onion had the most soft and pillowy texture, by far; it's our favorite. The asiago and calabrian chili had a nice kick and a fair amount of cheese. Cinnamon golden raisin was the most dense, and had plenty of raisins but the cinnamon didn't come through. Buckwheat sesame is a nice classic. Their stall is small and quaint. Sliced half loaves and sandwich breads are available. They also offer sourdough chocolate chip cookies and sourdough cinnamon rolls, but the prices are pretty steep at $8 and $10 each. I'd recommend this place to restock your weekly bread! read more

This is the place to order your sourdough breads. It's best to order the dread, if you just show up they maybe sold out. The sourdough has a good texture and one of the best sourdough flavor I've had. read more

I need to thank the gentleman that worked the booth at Seal Beach pier this morning! I was FaceTiming my mom who lives in another state while checking out the variety of delicious sourdough bread. I told him it was my mom's birthday and he took the time to greet my mom a HBD as I was buying bread. Thank you so much for making her day! Terrific sourdough bread! I like its organic and long fermented. They have cranberry orange/pepita for fall and it's just perfect! Not too sweet and makes great toast. Found them at Ladera Ranch Farmers market, too bad they're only there filling in. Highly recommend! read more

I have been a loyal weekly customer at the Irvine Regional Park Tuesday market since Gio started selling his innovative loaves prob in 2023? I am now personal shopper for my full-time work friends so they can have crusty, airy artisan sourdough as well!! You can't go wrong with the classic, but I've enjoyed the cranberry orange pepita , buckwheat, sourdough loaf, and their newest miso onion.. Their garlic rosemary l, zataar, and lemon artichoke focaccia were great complements to a soup and salad bunco I hosted last week. Irvine regional is less crowded than Orange homegrown and you can park and shop near your car! Highly recommend! Samples are freely given! read more

Love the doughy texture and taste is yummy, the kind of bread you can eat without any spread or anything else - reminds me of the baguettes I've had in Paris. read more

I love small axe bread so much. Their sourdough bread, focaccia and cookies are so delicious. I am very sensitive and I thought I could not eat wheat products anymore but it turns out I can eat organic, fermented bread products from this particular Baker. LOVE the Sourdough ! Goes great with Mexican hot chocolate . The sourdough with cranberries and pepitas ( pumpkinseeds) is also a good choice. Slice thick and add some cream cheese... Find at Farmers Market near Chapman College in Orange.. Lemon and Palm Ave.. Saturdays 9am to ...? 1pm or 2pm.. Not sure exactly what time FM ends .. Always there early to make sure I get what I'm going for. read more

Perhaps the saddest thing about moving out of the South Bay is no longer having access to the Torrance Farmers' Market where I can buy Small Axe Bread! Real, slow-batch sourdough is surprisingly hard to find... they also make a Buckwheat sourdough, which is pretty much impossible to find! I've bought all their delicious Foccacios and I think the Artichoke-heart one is my favorite... They also make an AMAZING sourdough coffee cake. I was living in a house with no toaster when I discovered them, so I made sourdough "toast" the slow way, melting a pat of butter in a pan and turning the sourdough slices over a few times on medium-low heat... I may never make it any other way! Sooo good and it makes the BEST avocado toast, too. read more

How are there not a million 5-star reviews for this local company?!? Small Axe is the only bread we keep in our house. We are super choosy about what goes into our bellies. Clean ingredients. Passionate baker. We haven't found another bread as well made as theirs. We alternate each week between their 48-hour fermented sourdough loaf and their buckwheat loaf. To be fair, the other breads they make are fabulous, too. They are the easiest and best gift to buy when visiting a friend for dinner. Pro Tip: Get to the farmers market early because their bread often sells out. They are probably at a number of farmers markets, but I have definitely seen them at Homegrown Orange on Saturdays and Irvine Regional Park on Tuesdays. I think they just added a Torrance farmers market to their routine. Wonderful small mom & pop shop! read more

Very disappointing for the price. I bought a buckwheat sesame sourdough bread for 14$ at the farmers market. Unlike other organic sourdough bread it isn't fresh or crusty. The main ingredient is wheat flour and there are only a few sesame seeds on top. read more

We made French toast with the brioche and made sourdough toast with butter and jam. Both were excellent. We were only going to buy the loaf of sourdough but the guy helping us told us it was buy one, get one free so we choose the brioche. What a deal! We don't know if this is their regular deal or it was for the holiday or what but we were thrilled. We don't live in OC but we're not too far so we can come visit our friends and pick up more bread when whenever we want. So happy we tried the bread. If you live in OC and want delicious bread I suggest you try them.

Usually parking here isn't too bad if you're staying for less than an hour and easy to walk over to the dessert shop. Baked Banhs is located in the 4th street food market, one of the first shops you'll see if you're coming from the parking lot. Note the hours before you come (for instance, they're closed on Sundays and Mondays). And note that they seem to usually sell out of certain items by the days end. We've tried a number of different items here now including four of their canelés and their basque cheesecake. The cheesecake was solid. But we really loved their canelés. They are soft/moist on the inside with a nice crunch. And the different flavors really come through. Our favorite is the black sesame - not only is there black sesame peppered on the top but also in the center with a nice black sesame cream. It's so good and delicious. Four canelés cost $16 and thought they were well worth the price. Again, it's so sad to hear that Baked Banhs is closing soon so if you're a fan of canelés or other desserts, recommended to come sooner than later to try this out! We really hope they reopen again elsewhere or do a lot of pop-ups soon.

Burrito tasted good and is quite large but you cant help but notice its mostly eggs and tater tots with not much meat. Since they charge a lot for the burrito its kind of hard to ignore. I havent seen many mentions of the serrano sauce here but it to me is their best sauce. Still it tasted good and thats what matters in the end. Might come back when Im craving the serrano sauce.

Ask them about the coffee, there is a story there.

Ketchup is served in little plastic cups.. as opposed to a squeeze bottle. The onion rings don't actually fit in the cups to dip them in ketchup. So.. yeah that's annoying. Bbq sauce is also served in those little cups. Where are the squeeze bottles of sauce lol. At least they don't charge for bbq sauce like heritage does. All in all was nice to get a new place. Did it remind me of bbq back home? No. Would I return? No

I have gone the past 2 years and never had issues getting it on the first day. This year was different. I got there around 5:05 and walked into the shop to see a lot of tables empty. I was shocked to see that. I waited in line with maybe like two people in front of me and guess what they asked of Pliny was still available. The guy working said to the people in front of me that they sold out. It was my turn I asked if they had it and the guy said that they had a line since 3pm and that they sold out of the keg. We ended up getting two beers since we went anyways but that's when things didn't add up. He kept telling all the other people that started to show up the same thing. These are reasons why it didn't add up 1) empty seats inside but had a line since 3pm and beer was released at 4pm 2) I don't think the people going for younger would just order one beer and not try other RR beers? 3) only one guy working beer counter and having to clean the tables and make sandwiches? 4) 12 oz pours of beer and keg with about 1984 oz would make it 166 beers. No way they sold 166 beers in an hour with one person working the bar and shop empty in an hour. They could have posted on their instagram or socials that they sold out but failed to do so. I'm sure a lot of people all night were disappointed to see that they didn't have it or post anything about it.

I recently visited the farmers market and bought four pastries from Small Axe Bread, including their sourdough and the miso onion sourdough. Everything was incredibly fresh and tasty. The sourdough had a perfect crust--crispy and slightly chewy--with a soft, airy inside and a nice tangy flavor. It felt like a really authentic, well-made loaf. The miso onion sourdough was a standout. The savory miso flavor blended beautifully with the caramelized onions, giving it a rich, comforting taste that was full of umami. It wasn't too salty, and the onion added a nice sweetness and texture. All four pastries were clearly made with care and high-quality ingredients. I was impressed by how flavorful and satisfying they were, and I would definitely go back to Small Axe Bread at the farmers market to try more. read more

I called the Orange location to place an order, but they informed me that custom orders needed to be placed through the Garden Grove location and provided me with their contact information. When I called Garden Grove, I requested 24 funfetti-flavored cupcakes decorated with a rainbow theme. I wasn't particular about the exact design but specified that they should include rainbows or have colorful decorations. The person taking my order assured me that I would receive a call the following weekend to confirm the design. That call never came, but I assumed "rainbow" was a clear enough instruction. The week before my scheduled pickup, I called to confirm my order and requested to add six more cupcakes. I specifically asked, "These will be rainbow, right?" and was told yes. On the pickup day, my husband retrieved the cupcakes, but the six additional ones I had ordered the previous week were missing. Staff had to quickly add them that morning, and while understandable, they ended up being vanilla instead of funfetti. However, none of the cupcakes--neither the original 24 nor the additional six--had any rainbow decorations or color at all. Additionally, the boxes provided for the cupcakes have a perforated middle designed to keep them in place, but it was flimsy and sagged in the box, causing nearly all of the cupcakes to fall over during transport to the party. While the cupcakes themselves tasted good, I was disappointed by the order confusion, lack of decoration, and the fact that they arrived smashed. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this place.
