Some of the best oysters I've ever had but everything else leaves something to be desired. The mac and cheese was the same base as the fondue. We had dinner at SM44 before a theatre performance, and while there were a few things I appreciated, the overall experience felt inconsistent and not quite aligned with the upscale image--or the upscale pricing. To start on a positive note, the Christmas decorations were lovely. The space felt festive and welcoming, and that initial impression set a nice tone as we walked in. Our host was all smiles and positive throughout. Things became less smooth during the initial drink service. The host asked if we preferred still or sparkling water--similar to what you might hear in Europe--but both options were bottled Saratoga water and carried a charge. Tap water wasn't offered at all, so our "choice" of still water ended up costing $12 for two bottles. It felt excessive and completely unnecessary, especially since regular tap water would have been perfectly fine. Another unexpected moment was someone taking our photo at the table without explaining why, only to return later trying to sell it to us in a frame. That kind of solicitation felt more like something you'd see at a theme attraction, not an upscale restaurant. My NY strip was cooked well, but it didn't include any sides. When I asked for A1, I was given their house-made steak sauce instead, without being told it carried a $5 charge for a tiny 2 oz portion. The salmon was $35, the strip close to $50, and even the kids' mac and cheese was $20 despite being made with gruyère, which wasn't exactly appealing to our 8‑year‑old. We kept the meal simple and didn't order alcoholic drinks, yet the bill still came to $175--and it automatically included a 20% tip for our small party of three. That's something I'd normally only expect for groups of six or more. There were also a few small but noticeable issues: our table rocked back and forth and wasn't fixed, and some of the flat‑panel TVs on the walls were displaying random computer text instead of anything intentional. It made the space feel a bit unfinished. I know Chef Willie has cooked for celebrities in the past, and there were elements of the meal that were enjoyable, but overall the experience didn't leave the best impression. With more transparency around pricing and some updates to the atmosphere, SM44 could better match the upscale experience it's aiming for. read more

Spectacular spot for special occasions! I visited this restaurant for a friend's birthday, and the presentation of my meal was magnificent--the taste and tenderness of the tomahawk matched perfectly. The classic Mac and cheese was good too. The serving size was so generous that I enjoyed it for three straight days. The seasoning was perfection. Everyone in our party of six enjoyed their meals. Absolutely great experience! As I walked up, I was greeted and the door was opened by a gentleman in a black suit. I was sat immediately. There was no wait for my other party and we added an extra plus one at arrival. Very accommodating. The waitress was very friendly. She introduced herself, asked questions and answered any questions we had. There were three of us. We ordered the tomahawk, Chilean sea bass, Brussels sprouts, broccolini, bread pudding, fondue dip, fried mushrooms, blueberry Mai tai, and agave old fashion. Everything was amazing! The steak was brought out and cut in front of us. There were displays happening at several tables as well. After dinner we went downstairs to the speakeasy. We enjoyed shots that came out on a tray with lights and smoke! Great presentation. I believe there is valet but the lot across the street does not play with the fees be prepared to not park there or pay up front to not have overpricing. I was genuinely excited to try SM44ATL because I've had several great experiences at BAR44, which shares the same ownership. Unfortunately, this visit fell far short of the elevated steakhouse experience I expected. Our service was inattentive from the beginning. Our server didn't introduce herself or ask about drinks before asking if we were ready to order appetizers. I ordered a French 75 after specifically confirming that it would be served in a champagne flute. About 10 minutes later, it arrived in a large wine glass. I was told the champagne flutes were dirty and being washed, and I said I was happy to wait for a clean one. Our server then disappeared for nearly 20 minutes. During that time, no one checked on us, our waters weren't refilled, and my drink wasn't returned. We eventually had to ask a food runner to locate our server and then flag down a manager ourselves. The manager was apologetic and tried to help, but there were still multiple mix-ups before my drink was finally made correctly. What concerned me most was being told that the restaurant had hosted a large event on Sunday and that the champagne flutes had been sitting dirty since then waiting to be washed. I found that explanation concerning, particularly for a restaurant presenting itself as an upscale dining establishment. We also waited more than 30 minutes for our entrées and had to ask for an update because our server was once again difficult to find. When the food finally arrived, it was underwhelming and didn't feel justified by the premium prices. We weren't looking for free food or a discount. We simply wanted to enjoy our evening, pay our checks, and leave, which we did. We paid in full, including the automatic 20% gratuity. I hate that this experience was so disappointing because my expectations were high based on my experiences at BAR44. Unfortunately, SM44ATL missed the mark for me in service, timing, and overall dining experience. I won't be returning. read more

I'm not sure what's going on now but we went last Friday and the bathroom was disgustingly filthy, the restaurant smelled like sewage. The food quality was very "Applebee's" and the drinks were blah. This was nothing less than a great evening. The had outdoor, bar, main, and upstairs seating. We sat upstairs with a party of 7 so it was more private. Our waiter was great as well as the bartender as I arrived early and started there for happy hour. The drinks did not disappoint and nor did the food. The staff was friendly and helpful and the service was quick without making you feel rushed. So to get into the food, everything was perfect! I went here to celebrate my friend new job and my other friend moving to Atlanta and I'm glad I picked this restaurant out now I will say a little bit pricey, but if that's how you roll definitely do what you do best let's start off with the service, which was amazing our waitress did a lot for recommendations and I trusted everything that she stated, and we tried everything pretty much on the menu. I will say there was nothing that I did not like I even liked the lobster mac & cheese and I feel like a lot of people in Atlanta can't can't make mac & cheese, but this was amazing and I will get it again. I think overall it was a beautiful environment very cute. I love the fact that they take photos and let you purchase them. The speakeasy was pretty small and smoky so did not stay in there at all. On September 19th, I had an AMAZING experience at SM44. The ambiance was incredible, setting the stage for a time I won't forget. The crab cake was pure perfection, firm, flavorful, and without a hint of mushiness. I'm not ashamed to say I completely cleaned my plate, wishing I had a biscuit to soak up every last drop of that amazing sauce ‍ The mac & cheese was equally comforting, with that perfectly well-done top layer just like my granny used to make. My friend declared the NY Strip the "Absolute best" steak they'd ever had, and the greens were fantastic and full of flavor. First off I've been wanting to oblige this establishment for quite some time. Let me say that the food was great I had NY Strip with Broccolini, seasoned great! The wife had blackened salmon which she says was very tasty. And the shout out to the doorman, very hospitable! Now for the bad news, we had 10pm reservations which was already a late dinner but it was all they had on OpenTable. Arrived at 9:55 only to check in and be told we did not have a table and we could either wait or have dinner in the cigar lounge. Which was disappointing because I don't smoke and much less don't want to eat my dinner in a smoke room. Nevertheless we chose the cigar lounge as they didn't know when a table might be ready. Their answer for this was "we can't help that we are busy!" Uh yeah understood but isn't that point of rsvp? Once getting downstairs to the speakeasy room the waiter was nice. However there was a standing group of guys just hanging out around our table, we eventually had to move our table because who wants to eat a $60 steak with people leering over you? Our original table was ready but the hostess said it was complete chaos upstairs as the party scene had begun. So if you're looking to go to SM44 any time soon I'd say be sure to go no later than 8. Be prepared for rude hostesses, and to wait for your reservation to be acknowledged. For the price point on the dishes, I'd expect better service. I was immediately disgusted with the taste and disappointed with the presentation. The ambiance was similar to that of a sports bar with just enough intimacy for a good quiet conversation. The service was not great nor memorable as the waitress did not hold a smile the whole evening and did not inform us of all the pairing's to the entree's. As someone who enjoys fine dining and is no stranger to luxury experiences, this establishment has proven to be subpar at best. Heard about this restaurant from social media so went to try it out. Needless to say I found out the restaurant was black owned and they also had a celebrity black chef. I had reservations on the weekend which was very busy i recommend to make them early or during the week for the best experience. From the moment we pulled up, the valet set the tone for an exceptional evening. Very Friendly, and professional, I was skeptical because the valet was backed up, but I tried to park across the street, but public machine parking was 30$, so I went back to the valet and they handled our vehicle very quickly. It was cheaper and also had the option to pay before or after which helped because I don't carry cash. All we had to do is notify the valet via text message when we were ready to leave and they had the car ready the second we stepped out. The restaurant itself was incredible--delicious food, warm ambiance, and service could be better--but I have to give special praise to the valet taking care of my car. It's rare to find a place in the city of Atlanta who don't over charge for parking and also make sure the car is safe.
