My all over deep brown/black coloring was excellent, and they knew how to handle having microlink extensions, with the exception of not always being careful with brushing and the area above the extension bonds sometimes snagging on the brush. What I have a real issue with is the blue streak I had done. I've had bright color done on my hair before many times and I've never had the color transfer while *dry* (and washed after the initial color application). I've stained and ruined shirts, my nails, headphones, pillow cases, towels, all because of this color job. It's one thing to bleed out color in the shower (expected), it's another to stain clothes and sheets with fully dry hair color. This has not gone away after a second wash and dry. So I would not get bright color done here unless you want to stain everything you love. read more

My first visit to Slope Suds was on Sunday morning. I had an appointment with Nallely and I was so happy with the entire experience. Nallely was super attentive and really listened to what I was asking for and double checked with me throughout the process. She did an amazing job and was extremely thorough and gentle handling my hair. Nallely also discussed a lot of different products that would work with my naturally curly hair which was really helpful -- they were having sale, so I was happy to buy the conditioning cream. So here are just a few reasons why Sam is one of the most amazing stylists I've worked with in several years: A) You can walk into her salon with a basic concept. She will listen with an open ear and respond with her professional advice that she thinks will work for you. But the key is that she listens. You give her an idea and she runs with it. But in the way that you want. She always puts your vision before anything. B) She will NEVER (unlike a lot of NYC stylists) try to push or bully you into what she thinks is best for you. She will adhere to your basic idea and make modifications with her input if you are comfortable with them. But, again, only if it is what you want. C) Her opinion should always be a part of your overall vision. Because her advice is consistently spot on and will do nothing but enhance whatever it is you're looking for. I pretty much only write reviews if I have a truly great experience, and my time at Slope Suds definitely qualifies! Nervous about getting a pixie cut again after a few years of growing my hair out, I reached out to the salon via e-mail to ask if any of their stylists had experience with short haircuts. I received a prompt, enthusiastic response, saying they had just the stylist (Callie) in mind and an available appointment right away! I'm used to stylists being pretty cautious when I tell them just how short I like my hair, but I showed Callie a picture of what I wanted and she immediately set to work. Horrible, horrible experience at this place.... After some good raves from friends, I decided to check it out as a potential place to have my hair done for my wedding. I made the appointment via the website and communicated to the person responding to me what I was looking for and my wedding date. I had to wait two weeks for an appointment not in the middle of the day. When I showed up, I sat, waiting for about 20 minutes. Finally the receptionist figured out that, whoops, they had given another girl, a walk-in looking for a blow out, my appointment, and she had already been shampooed, etc. So they leave the girl sitting in a chair with a wet head while they called another stylist who had walked out to run an errand because they told her her appointment was "missing" which I witnessed because I was sitting in front of reception the entire time this was going on... Finally, I am sitting in the chair with the stylist booked via the website, and before we got going, I wanted confirm with her that she did have availability on my wedding date. Another whoops, she actually did not work Saturdays... never had! So the dolt who booked my appointment somehow did not know this or never thought through the logistics of the wedding date, although I had clearly said Saturday. So they had another stylist step in and oscillate between coloring someone else's hair and advising an assistant on how to do my hair. While the finished product was alright, although nothing to rave about, the terrible experience didn't end there. Turns out they were booked up on the date of my wedding, and the receptionist kept sighing audibly with annoyance - with me - as she tried to fit me and my two bridesmaids into the calendar. Again, I had PROVIDED MY WEDDING DATE with the original request for an appointment. So the fact that I would need an appointment on that day should not have been a surprise or if they were booked it could have been communicated to me ahead of time. And the attitude that was flying of complete indifference and annoyance was insane, I mean, not for nothing, getting married is kinda a big deal. I also tried to make an appointment with the stylist who had just directed my hairdo for a cut beforehand. She only had an open appointment on a Wednesday evening. I had another appointment that day and I called up and moved the second appointment to Thursday - in front of the stylist and receptionist - and booked the cut on Wednesday. The following Tuesday, I got a call from the salon, the stylist had to leave early tomorrow, could we move my appointment to Thursday? I mean, seriously, they knew I had already moved an appointment to Thursday to accommodate the stylist's availability, and now rather than keep the appointment, she wanted to leave early. I calmly explained that no, I would not move the appointment, I had something else booked that day, could she possible stay a little late and keep the appointment with me? Nope, she had to leave early. At this point, I gave up, lost it and canceled the appointment. And canceled the other three appointments for the wedding day. The whole experience was unprofessional and frustrating. I called Bumble & Bumble Downtown immediately after getting off the phone with Slope Suds and had all appointments re-booked with no hassle in minutes with complete courtesy and a genuine helpful attitude. One day I looked in the mirror and realized that my eyebrows had gone the way of vampires & twitter... they were taking over. I think the guy on the other end of the phone could hear my desperation, because he told me (without having seen the offending brows) that I should probably go for the full on shaping treatment. Good call, dude. So, I got my eyebrows 'shaped' by Hope this weekend. She was great - very professional, chatty but not too chatty, spent some time talking about what we should do, etc. My brows now look fabulous and I am ready to face to world again. I will definitely go back to her, even though it was a little more than I was hoping to spend. Completely worth it. The place itself is very cute, and I would love to get more services done here in the future. The treatment room was comfortable, clean and basically sound-proof. It made me wish I was getting a gentle, calming massage rather than having hairs pulled off of my face. Maybe some day... Minus one star for the guy at the front desk, who made me feel kind of uncomfortable - when I came in he acted like he needed to figure out what to do with me (answer: point to Hope) and when I went up to pay, he waved off the other girl trying to ring me up, then whispered something to her about making sure to charge me for the shaping ($35) rather than just the wax ($15). I wasn't trying to trick anyone into charging me less, and please don't whisper about me when I'm standing two feet away - I can still hear you. I will still be back, despite the sass. read more

I really didn't want to be disappointed with this place but I was. I mostly blame the stylist I had- Tanya. She ruined my hair. On my birthday, right before a special dinner and the day before my birthday party. I got in the chair and told her that I didn't want to cut the length and just freshen up a little the layers, but that I didn't want a choppy hair cut and I wanted it styled with lots of volume. What ended up happening was me sitting in the chair holding back my tears and a florence henderson haircut. She didn't cut the length but cut WAY TO MUCH off the layers so now I have choppy layers that no matter what I do it, there is a shelf in the back of my head, even though she swore up and down that she blended them and it was simply because "I wasn't used to it". Wrong. I'm not used to having a f"""ed up hair do. Not only that but she used a technique that I thought was so weird and no stylist should EVER USE IT AGAIN (instead of cutting my hair when it's wet, she blew it out straight and then cut dry. She wasn't even going to style it the way I had told her I had wanted it until I told her for the third time that I came here to get it STYLED. I was super disappointed with this place, but it was totally her. Please go but avoid Tanya- this woman sent me walking home crying. No joke. read more

I was led to Slope Suds by Yelp as I looked for a someone to trust with my first salon experience in New York and I wanted to Yelp back about how great it went. Texas was my hairdresser. She started out by asking me what I wanted and asked great questions during the consultation (like what the environment of my work place is) to refine what she was going to do. I was really open to doing anything (except a pink pixie cut of sorts) for both color and my cut. I felt comfortable in this laid back salon that has great ladies working there and after only 2 hours I walked out with a great look. Not only was the experience fantastic, but my hair feels a million times healthier (lighter and bouncier). Plus, she didn't use a ton of product to make my hair look good as I walked out of the salon, so I know its something I can manage at home. It wasn't the least expensive salon ($166 for cut and color before tip) but it was worth it. Overall a wonderful experience! read more

Went there on a recommendation from a friend and I'm glad I did. I knew I needed a haircut but was really on the fence of buzzing it all off (I'm of "the age" where my hair has given up on me - hence my nice shiny bald spot). Alan, the stylist, talked me out of a buzz as politely and succinctly as possible ("You'll be left with a big white head in the middle of winter."). I really enjoyed his cut, style, conversation and expert eye for detail. He even washed my hair twice to get all the cut hair out of it (he cut a lot - in all the right places with very little direction from me - I left feeling great). The staff and spa itself all felt very cool and casual - neither pretentious nor "barber shop" lowbrow. So why not 5-stars? The price. Over $50 (post-tip) for a guy's haircut. Surely, the salon can reevaluate their pricing for those gents who are beyond the point of a "Bieber" or who just have short hair to begin with. If barbers can charge around $12-$14 bucks - there's gotta be some "mid-ground" for those gentlemen who want something "a little" nicer and more stylish. read more

I am so disappointed with the customer service here. My wife and I initially went here because it is close and reasonably priced. About a month ago, I made an appointment. I confirmed it over email. When I showed up they had never booked me. No real apology and no rebooking that day even though they admitted my email confirmation was received. Also, no offer of any discount. Yesterday my wife got a pretty good haircut. The hairstylist missed a chunk in the back and my wife called to see if someone could just clean it up today. When she called they said the stylist wouldn't be in until Monday and that no one else could clean it up for her. I am really surprised with this type of customer service the reviews on here are so positive. We will definitely be taking our business elsewhere. read more

Called on a saturday and, as luck would have it, one appointment was available with Nicki. She sat me down and consulted with me - was very direct about what she thought would and would not work. Love that. Next, the shampoo which included a wonderful scalp massage that I thought would have fallen by the wayside for the price I was paying. My cut was terrific and when I requested a Farrah Fawcett blow-dry, I left with feathers and wings and enough bounce to last through monday. Thanks Suds! read more

While I'm not sure I can match the gurgling enthusiasm of the other Yelpers have for this place, I must admit that I receive a superb, attentive haircut from Texas. She listened to me, ask me to show her pictures on the web, and took it shorter when I asked. She also did an excellent job cutting my notoriously unruly bangs. My color was fine, although I've had better. What was so sorely disappointing (and surprising, given the overall tenor of the reviews) was how lacking in warmth the salon itself was (figuratively and literally). When I walked in the salon had just opened for the morning and the heat was starting--in the midst of balls-out freezing weather. No joke, the stylist next to me was warming her feet with the blow dryer. The lack of heat not only made my entire experience pretty miserable, but just felt like unacceptable customer service. The stylists were all nice, and from what I've seen have excellent skillz--I'd like to see what they could do in a space with more personality and a working radiator. Also of note--I was charged for two-color process for a dye job that I've always been charged one-color, for the past 3 years (by my two previous stylists, in Kansas and Boston). My hair is dyed dark with one large piece of it bleached--and I've never been charged for straight-up bleaching as a "highlight" (my Boston stylist always said my 'do didn't warrant two-process cost). So I don't know if this is a new york thing, if I just had really generous previous stylists, or if its isolated to the salon itself. Something to think on. But because of that extra...$100 bucks(?), it would actually be cheaper for me to drive to Boston to get my hair done rather to have my hair dyed here again. And that's what I may well do. read more

The online appointment booking process went very smoothly--I was able to get an appointment on the day I wanted with a stylist highly recommended by other Yelpers very easily. When I walked in, the receptionist was very pleasant and professional and offered me a beverage of my choice. I found the decor to be very clean and modern. My stylist, Vivi, talked with me about what I wanted to do then proceeded to execute it perfectly using the dry-cutting method. She didn't try to push any of the products for sale, but the display of them was visually appealing. I left with a weight off my shoulders. read more

I hate shopping for stylists, but I wasn't happy with the way my hair was being cut and decided to check out Slope Suds. I'll start with this: it's sort of cramped. There's four chairs, four stylists, and you feel like everyone's on top of each other. It's not the swankiest of atmospheres. Tanya, who cut my hair, could probably have been a bit friendlier. BUT. She talked with me about what I wanted, and actually listened, more than anyone else ever has. We talked about what was good for my type of hair, for the shape of my face, for my lifestyle. She told me that they usually do dry cuts, especially for people with thick/wavy hair, because you can see what's going on more clearly. She explained to me, throughout the process, what she was doing and why. I honestly felt like I was being introduced to a whole new world of hair cutting. And even though I had let my hair become something of a rat's nest, I never felt looked down upon. Recommended. read more

After cutting my own hair for years and doing a "long layered trim" at an asian salon on 8th ave every so often, I had the itch to try something new. I cruised down seventh ave and noticed Slope Suds. I didn't have an appointment, but they took me immediately. I was introduced to Tanya, who was really sweet and had a proper consultation with me. My hair is long, super long, and was getting really heavy (I hadn't trimmed it myself or gone to my asian girl in quite some time). It's naturally more straight than curly, but has a natural wave to it. She asked me about how I usually style my hair, what look I was going for etc...and she promised she wouldn't chop off my long locks - which was my major concern. She said she'd give me as much texture and volume as she could without making it short and she delivered! She did a dry cut after flat ironing my hair and she over-directed each section in order to create long layers. She styled it by blow drying and keeping in the round brushes to create bounce and I left with a style I normally never wear, but after washing it today and styling it how I usually style it, it looks awesome! It feels lighter, has much more volume and frames my face nicely (not too many short layers around the face). The cut really flatters me and she managed to cut all my straggly ends without making it much shorter at all. All in all, I'm very happy with the cut. With tips (a separate girl shampooed me), it was just under 100 bucks) a lot more than I usually spend on my hair, but the result was much better than usual. I would definitely go back to Tanya, probably not super often because I'm a broke student, but it would be worth treating myself to a pro haircut this good every once in a while! read more

Alan was amazing! I was extremely stressed out going to a new place after having my hair cut by the same person for the past 10 years. I explained what I was looking for and he went into great detail about how my hair would lay from the cut I wanted and advised another option. You get up early on a Sunday morning and head to slope suds to make sure you are on time for your appointment, only to find the incompetent staff forgot to add your appointment to the book when you called two days ago so they have no one their to cut your hair. Even worse than that is the attitude you get from the pretentious receptionist who can only say "well I wasn't here when you booked the appointment." There are too many options in the slope to have to deal with an overpriced salon that hasn't figured out their business is based on customer service. I'll be taking my business elsewhere and suggest others do as well. read more
