This update is for Laura, only. She does not need to be coloring people's hair. My normal gal at a different salon was booked 3 months out, and my hair needed attention badly. I can't even go back to my girl, now, because I'm so embarrassed. What I booked: 3 hour balayage. I like mine toned to a Carmel color and to look natural. What I got: a poorly done, brassy FOLIAGE and a wolf cut. She then proceeded to try and teach me how to curl my hair, while it was still damp. I did reach out to the salon to speak with the owner. She never returned my call, but gave my number to Laura to text me. Nope. You will not touch my hair again. To Felicia, the owner, you should be reaching out and fixing this mess. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. This was hands down the worst salon experience I've ever had, and I want to warn others before they waste their time and money here. I've been to Slate Salon and Spa before with my usual stylist and always had a great experience. But this time, I had to book with someone else since my regular stylist wasn't available. What should have been a straightforward bleach, color, and cut turned into a 5-hour nightmare. Here's what happened: After 2 hours, the stylist hadn't even finished bleaching half of one side of my head. Normally, my regular stylist finishes with the full bleach, color, and cut in that time. The bleach dried out before I was even put under the heater, and they were completely disorganized about when and how the second side should be done. At one point, I was left lying at the sink for 40 minutes with chemicals burning my scalp. I verbally said "ow" multiple times, but the stylist wasn't gentle and ignored my discomfort. By the time she finally returned, my scalp felt like it was on fire. Because of the mistakes, my hair didn't even get the proper second bleach. The toner was rushed, and instead of the white blonde color I specifically asked for, I walked out with a patchy, uneven yellow-grey mess. The haircut was just as bad, barely any effort, not the length I asked for, and she didn't even show me a mirror. I had to ask her three separate times to go shorter, but each time she ignored me, cut almost nothing, and then walked away to the cash register. After 5 miserable hours, I left with a burning scalp, a botched color, and a terrible haircut. To make matters worse, when I called the next day to share how bad the experience was, the owner blamed me, saying I made the stylist "nervous." That is beyond unprofessional and insulting. I barely said a word the entire time, except to say when I was in pain. Instead of taking responsibility, they deflected and refused to acknowledge how unacceptable the service was. This was not only the most unprofessional salon visit I've ever had, but it was also physically painful and emotionally exhausting. The fact that the owner defended this level of service instead of apologizing tells me everything I need to know about this business. Save yourself the money, time, and frustration. Unless you're booking with a specific stylist you already know and trust, do not go here. I will never be coming back. read more

I got a haircut from Laura and really liked it! I showed her the picture of what I wanted, which is what I usually show stylists but is never quite right, and she was able to do it really well. I first went to Slate for a manicure, and Lori made my nails look beautiful! She has a very gentle touch and is kind and personable. After my first appointment, I booked another and also made a hair appointment as I needed a new stylist. I spent nearly 6 hours in the chair, but it was worth it! I have dark brown, long, thick, previously colored hair (pro and box color) with old, brassy highlights at the ends. Cecilia, assisted by Kayla, worked her magic, and I walked out with the color I have been wanting for 20+ years. She applied highlights, babylights, balayage, teasy lights...all sorts of techniques to get my hair where I wanted it to be. She fixed my chopped-off hair (I was frustrated at my dry ends, so I took a pair of kitchen scissors and hacked away). I went in just knowing I wanted a lighter color and a haircut, and Cecilia formulated a plan and made sure I was happy every step of the way. She had no issue taking the time needed to make sure my hair looked amazing and I loved it. Despite the lightening process, which can often lead to dryness, my hair is soft and has beautiful, natural movement. I'm so grateful to have a top-notch salon minutes from my house and I'm so happy to have Cecilia as a stylist. read more

Julie did a fantastic job on my hair cut! I had been looking for a stylist who can work with my unusual hair texture. I am middle eastern, so my hair is thick and wavy/curly. Most stylists are unfamiliar with my hair texture and struggle working with it. Straight her does not look good on me. Julie cut and styled it just right so it's not frizzy and not straight. My natural curls look lovely with this new haircut. Julie gave me styling recommendations. She is very nice and pleasant and not pushy. I will definitely go back to her. I had my hair cut by Laura a week ago. I just now returned from another hair appointment to try to figure out what remedy there might be to fix this disaster. Hair on top of my head is two inches long and on the sides about seven inches long. The two local hair stylists said the remedy is time. The top will grow out, the sides can be cut a little and eventually (months) there will be enough to style a decent haircut. It's a disaster for me as I do ballroom dancing and I am going to look like a disaster until this grows long enough to style it in a decent way. Where the hell did she get a license? read more

Slate has a great location near downtown Edmonds and maintains clean and modern atmosphere. My high rating, however, is specifically for Kathy. I've never had a stylist give me exactly what I wanted time after time! From haircuts to balayage, she does it all. Cecilia is amazing!! I originally came to her July 2022 after I had been to two previous stylists, and have stuck with her since. The first did a great job with my original balayage. It was beautifully blended, but also not even close to what I had asked for (my whole head was bright blonde and I wanted to stay brunette). My second stylist was closer to home but I was never satisfied with my hair after. I had seen these previous stylists multiple times, but they do not even come close to how great Cecilia is. My eyes are sensitive and usually get very twitchy when I have anything done but it wasn't even an issue. She was so careful and the result was beautiful! I love this salon, it's beautiful inside and everyone is always so nice. I get my hair done with Lisa M. I was so happy to find her because I had been searching Seattle for a good hair stylist. I have a pixie and I had a hard time finding someone who understood what I wanted. Lisa is great at giving me the cut I want. Our most recent appointments have been transitioning me into a blonde for my first time!! We did it gradually and now I am right where I want to be :) My hair still feels great because Lisa uses great product to make sure my hair didn't get too damaged during the lightening process. My purse was stolen while getting my hair done and Cecelia, the owner literally didn't care. I will never return.

I live out of state and was going to visit family in the area and while there I was needing to get a haircut. A friend of my sister's recommended that I see Cecilia, the owner, and mentioned that she would be a great person to see about getting a haircut for my extremely thin/fine hair. Before coming to town, I sent a message to the salon via their website asking if I could maybe email Cecilia directly about the haircut I was thinking of getting, to see if she thought it would even work with my hair type. Within hours, Cecilia emailed me personally and I was able to discuss the cut with her. Shortly after that, my appointment was booked. I just got my hair cut this weekend, and I have never in my life been more thrilled - both with the cut and the experience. Not only did she review some photos and a video I had sent her with examples of the cut I was looking for, but she even suggested some minor changes to the cut that would help it work better with my hair pattern. She was extremely friendly, patient and professional and made me feel completely at ease despite going from long (long) hair to an extremely short pixie cut. I highly, highly recommend Cecilia and will definitely be back for a trim next time I'm in town...and I'm tempted to make regular trips to see her despite living in Alaska. She's that good. This review is specifically about whom ever is actually running the business as a whole and not any individual person. Basically whoever owns the salon and makes the final call on decisions, is precisely who this review is directed towards. That being said.... I always give people the benefit of the doubt and I hate writing negative reviews, but I feel like this could help someone make a decision that would potentially benefit them in the future. I wish I could give the owner of the salon zero stars, unfortunately that is not an option.A year ago for my birthday, My boyfriend at the time bought a very generous gift card for some services at this particular salon, where I have been a client for years and spent thousands of dollars for services. I have never had a problem except for some issues with the people at the front desk who seem to come and go a lot, basically scheduling issues. The last time I was there, the front desk person had either left early or something to that effect I couldn't use my gift card which was no problem, I paid with my debit, and was told I could use it the next time. That is totally understandable, however my gift card went MIA, and I have not been able to locate it. A few weeks went by and my next scheduled service came up and I couldn't find my gift card so I felt pretty bad, and just wanted to touch base and make sure that wasn't a problem because obviously, legally, sales are on some sort of record and the gift card and never been used. There was never a physical receipt issued to me as it was a gift and as a longtime client, I felt that this would of course not be an issue. Apparently the owner thought it was an issue, and told me I should have treated the gift card like cash and if it is lost and so is all of the money on it. $220 was the value of the gift card it wasn't a sale, it wasn't on special. My boyfriend spent his hard-earned money, To get me something special for my birthday. At this point I am completely baffled because the owner, who obviously has no care for a long time customer such as myself is literally making it so that I will never return to the salon. It's quite unfortunate because I enjoyed the services on the employees. I urge anyone reading this to rethink purchasing a gift card from this establishment because if something were to happen like your purse or wallet getting stolen or a misplaced card, could result in you completely losing the value of the card. To make things worse, the woman never even contacted me herself, but made an employee contact me to let me know of the news. I think that this is probably one of the worst instances of customer service and cowardice by an owner I have ever experienced in my life, and I've been in the customer service industry for 18 years.I will tell every single human being I know about my experience and make sure that my voice is not lost like my money was. To the owner of Slate salon, essentially you are a garbage human with Extremely bad business ethics and practices. Do I know how good of a job they do here? No. All I know is that I waiting almost 40 min for my appointment. At 10 after my appointment I had the receptionist tell me she was just finishing up and would be right out. Nothing else was said. Appointments are there for a reason and if the scheduled time wasn't going to work, I would have been able to come later. Instead I wasted my lunch break driving there and back with no haircut. I had a great experience with Audrey at Slate Salon. I wanted to make a radical departure from my shoulder-length layered cut to a pixie cut, and the receptionist recommended Audrey for this type of cut. Audrey did a great job of taking the photo I brought in and translating it to suit my hair and face-shape, giving me a superb razor cut (if you've ever had a bad razor cut, you know how valuable a good one is!). She also gave my friend a pixie, and tailored the cut to her face-shape and hair-type, which are completely different from mine, and we both came out looking good! LEAH! LEAH! LEAH! Leah is the most amazing hair stylist I have ever had! After 20 years of sub par hair experiences I have become super picky. I have had so many blunders with my hair it's embarrassing. With Leah it is different she spends time with me to figure out what I want. She knows MY hair and that it needs a certain touch because every cut shows. She is sensitive and intuitive and is a hair healer. When I see the transformation she has made I feel absolutely fabulous and she has the personality and spirit to match! No matter what I want done she always accommodates and always applies her specific artistic touch.
