The shrimp were good but unfortunately the huge pile of onion rings was not as good as it looked. Would not get those again. My grandson had the chicken tenders platter and there was a good amount of chicken. He had baked beans and liked them but didn't care for the chicken. The service was good and the food came out hot. When a seafood craving hits it's OK. A plus is that it's one of only a couple of places with Cheerwine in the serve-yourself soda machine. Wow the portions are huge. Had a 2 combo plate of baby shrimp and clam strips. That plate easily could've fed 2 people and fried seafood is not worth saving the leftovers. Order and pay up front and they bring you your food. Pump your own cocktail and tartar sauces. Not sure why they suggest 15-20 % tip on minimal service like bringing your plate out but it's getting annoying. The clam strips were very heavy on the breading and light on the actual clam. It felt like I was eating breading. The baby shrimps were a little better but also heavy on the breading. For sides, we ordered fries and onion rings, with additional side of cole slaw. A platter arrived at our table that was absolutely huge. Three large pieces of fried cod/haddock, a generous portion of popcorn shrimp, fries, onion rings/straws and three hush puppies. Oh my goodness. I thought maybe they had combined two platters for one presentation. But it was single 2-item combo ($17.99) , big enough for sharing . . . And some to take home. And not just huge, but delish. The cod/haddock had a nice crunch, the fish meat was flaky and delicious and the batter was fried perfectly with a nice flavor. The popcorn shrimp were tasty. Some places rely on sauces to overcome mediocre dishes. (Sometimes you see that at BBQ joints that rely on their BBQ sauces to mask their "meh" meat.). Here, though, the struggle was different. Here, the fish was so good on its own, with the cocktail and tartar sauces also so good, that it was a difficult choice whether to eat the fish alone or dipped in a sauce. The onion rings/straws were good. The fries were outstanding. A large portion of perfectly cooked potato. For me, the hush puppies were the weak part of the meal and disappointing. Had the fish tacos, 2 in an order so had one grilled, one fried. Made it a plate and chose slaw and fries. Their slaw is minced fine and flavorful. The celery seed comes through. The fries. Hot! Yum. Their tarter sauce must be housemade, as it was delightful as I dipped the fries. The tacos had a great Pico, cilantro topping, so I didn't add tarter sauce. Brewed unsweetened iced tea was great. They offer Pepsi fountain products. They do not offer anything steamed, only fried or broiled. I'd eat here again. Staff were friendly and could answer questions well. Hello, I'm from the Washington DC Metro Area & I am very, very picky when it comes to food - I normally don't like to eat out. I had the catfish, haddock, oysters, fries, coleslaw, & clam chowder. I wanted to try it all! LOL. I couldn't get all of this the day before due to Lent. I gave the food a 10 out of 10. The oysters reminded me of my gramps oysters, the coleslaw was nice & sweet, the fish was cooked just right. Only thing that I didn't get that I wanted was scallops - next time. I have hush puppies, haven't eaten them yet. Didn't really care for the fries because I let them get cold. Definitely a place I will make a return trip to! read more

Super fast and friendly service. I like that you can get a fish fry but not just on Fridays. The fried fish is delicious with a light, fresh batter. The hush puppies weren't overcooked and tasted delicious. The fish tacos are a great option if you want grilled fish instead of fried. Your choice of cod, Mahi, or haddock. Overall - great spot to grab some fried fish. All sorts of different varieties of fish from simple fried shrimp, cod and catfish. The service is counter ordering and the staff is extremely friendly. Swimming in dirty grease that needed to be changed. This platter was $15! A complete waste of my hard earned money. During a time where the cost of goods and services is rising steadily, so should the QUALITY of your product. Most people won't take the time to complain they'll let their feet speak for them by walking into other restaurants where their money is respected with quality and taste. Updated review. Gave Skipper's another try, getting takeout this time. The sampler platter was so good! The breading adhered to the fish/seafood, it was seasoned well, and everything was cooked nicely. Very glad we gave this another shot because we were pleasantly surprised with how much we enjoyed our meals & how different it was from our first experience there. Skipper's is a must try in Apex. We placed an order online and it was ready in about 15 minutes but you can dine inside or outside. If you dine in, they serve draft beer. I tried the single seafood platter with a fish sandwich, cole slaw and applesauce, my husband tried the same thing but with green beans and corn and my mom went with the flounder, baked beans and green beans. The portions are plentiful for the price plus the food was so good! I'll have to try BBQ Monday or BBQ Thursday next. I love this restaurant! Small, laid back no frills atmosphere and excellent food. I used to work in Apex and was able to frequent more often, but now is a special treat location. Turned my fiancé in to them and he lives their barbecue! He and his boss now go every Friday for smoked brisket and chicken. Definitely a great place with great food. read more

I had a brisket sandwich and my husband fish and chips. The brisket was really good and soft. The fish was delicious! I have never had a fish fry like this. Their tartar sauce is great too. This order is plenty for at least two people I think. We loved that their cashiers are so nice, kind and respectful. The place has tables inside and air conditioning. Oh, Skippers, how I have missed you!! It's been a long time since I've been down this way to go to my favorite fattening fried fish joint. It seems to me that last time I was here, quality had gone downhill, but even if my last time was just on an off night, Skippers has come roaring back post-pandemic. It's tempting to try the smoked meats here (and I will sometime) but today it was all about the famous fish sandwich platter, and hoo-boy, it did not disappoint. HUGE piece of fish, as usual, hot, hot, hot out of the fryer. The tartar sauce from a pump is back, the coleslaw is creamy and sweet and a perfect complement to the piping hot, perfectly salted, flaky, crunchy-coated fish. I substituted baked beans for fries, and these were thick and rich and sweet and savory, with a few shreds of smoked meat (probably brisket). All this deliciousness was accompanied by four hush puppies, which were also crunchy-coated, hot, and just slightly sweet. This isn't health food by any definition. But if living longer means giving up Skipper's, well, is it really worth it? read more

This quick stop fish fry restaurant is one of my husband's favorite stops for lunch. This was my first visit. I was hangry for lunch at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon. We both had the famous fish sandwich. You've got to see the pictures to believe the size of the cod fillet. It was perfectly fried, lightly breaded, and crunchy without being greasy. It was served with three hush puppies. This was the perfect amount with such a supersized sandwich. The service was excellent and your meal is delivered to your table and when you are finished they bus your table. Have no fear there is much more to the menu than fish sandwiches. Broiled and boiled seafood, soups, chowders, tacos, steamers, platters, desserts and plenty of side items round out the menu. I'll be back to try them all. Drove out to Cary so we could do some shopping at HMart, and found ourselves in downtown Apex on our way home. This place is hands down some of the best fried fish and shrimp I've had and I'm from Florida! My husband got the fish sandwich which was huge! The fish is perfectly fried, it has a coating that doesn't overpower the tender flaky cod underneath. I shared the 2 option combo with fish and large shrimp and again huge portions! The shrimps were succulent and juicy, perfectly cooked with a crispy coating. Fries, hushpuppies and slaw were tasty too but we could hardly touch them due to being so full. The house made tarter and cocktail sauce were spot on and the secret seasoning is not to be missed, seriously it's delicious on everything!! This place doesn't look like much from the outside but don't let that deter you, the staff is welcoming and friendly and the restaurant is clean and well kept. The prices were very reasonable for the generous portions and quality you receive. We live over an hour away and we will definitely be back! Thank you Michael!! Stopped by for lunch on Sunday 8/3/25. The cocktail sauce was clogged and it exploded all over me! It was on my new hat, shoes, shirt, shorts, and in my eye! I was calm as the young man told me it happens often, with a smile on his face. Apparently the whole staff knows that this happens quite frequently. He offered a free pudding as compensation for me now having to end my afternoon out because I smell like vinegar!! I asked for a phone number to be written down when he had a chance, and he walked up to me with the manager on speaker phone. There were several other patrons in the lobby eating, and I told him i wanted a number to follow up with a higher power. He refused. I stayed calm with him also until he sarcastically told me to go to the ER if the sauce burned my eyes. I told him it could have gotten in aq child's eyes, and they knowingly laugh about it. I said they need a sign or some kind of warning. I was refused a refund, and I spoke with the police as they arrived. I cannot believe the manager MARK spoke to me in such a careless way!! read more

Unfortunately, Skippers, a place I would often frequent, has hired a young man who is rude, short with the customer, makes unnecessary comments, and just stares at you without communicating when you want to order. When asked if he is ready to take your order, he just has a smart remark. This has happened twice, gave it a second chance after it happened the first time. We visited on a somewhat slow Friday evening as I am told they are usually quite busy. I arrived prior to dinner time so the crowd may have been on the way. I ordered grilled large shrimp with broccoli. The shrimp were more medium-sized but the serving was filling nonetheless. The broccoli sprinkled with parmesan was enjoyed as well. Now and again, I get a craving for fried fish. I decided to give Skipper's a try. The service is great, the staff is friendly, and it's always nice to feel welcomed. The dining area is clean. The staff does not wear masks here, so do not expect it. They all seemed enthusiastic about taking orders. The fish (fried flounder), shrimp, and the slaw were decent. I like that the shrimp was tail off. The onion rings were overcooked. Most of the breading fell off the onion rings. The peach cobbler was a bit too bready for my liking. Overall this was not a bad experience. I would come again, but I do not know if I would share this as a must-try seafood location. Not quite four stars, but I give Skippers a solid three stars for the service. The fried fish didn't wow me or completely satisfy my craving. I am still on the hunt for my seafood craving. read more

Since they started serving smoked meats it has been my favorite place for brisket until today. The brisket was dry and stringy, almost like jerky. It was not sliced across the grain of the meat but with the grain and had a LOT of fat on it. I was also embarrassed because I brought a good friend with me and had been singing the praises of the brisket. I noticed Michael, the owner, was not there and didn't recognize any of the staff. I will give them another chance at some point but today I was not at all impressed. If this had been my 1st visit I would never return. I know Michael expects better of his staff. read more

We've been wearing at Skipper's for years... Favorite dish place. Literally never disappoints. Seems lately though, the owner put in a smoker and started doing BBQ. Well, this I had to experience. You know what? The ribs are serious legit! Tasty meat, good smoke, not overspiced, not a ton of bark. Meat, smoke, salt and pepper. Very Texas style, which I love! Now I have significant problems. In the past, I got fish, which I love, and there was never a problem. Now I have to choose between two great things? That's not fair. Anyway, go eat at Skippers. The food is great. My one complaint?
