It's been awhile since I was here and decided to stop for a late lunch/early dinner before I went to the bookstore. They were very busy with both take out and dine in orders. The girl at the register was struggling....both with my order and the order ahead of me, but she finally got it right. The volume inside was very loud today, I guess partly due to lots of people. I had "lean" brisket, collards , fried okra and sweet tea. I had one good piece of lean meat, but the rest was more fat and smaller pieces. The collards were spiced differently than I remembered. I will not get again. The okra was hot, but lacked flavor. Needs some kind of seasoning in the batter. The portion was smaller than last time as well. Another big factor in the decreased stars is the cleanliness of the tables. The table I had to sit at was REALLY disgusting. I cleaned it with a bunch of towels then went to the bathroom and got wet towels and tried again. I saw others wiping down their tables as well. I went there with my 2 kids 6 and 4 and my pregnant wife and honestly had a terrible experience. If you value respect, personal space, safety or just an enjoyable environment in any way DO NOT COME HERE. I'll first start by saying when I entered the restaurant I notice this elderly woman in the corner and she noticed us as well. ( I didn't know this at the time but apparently the business allows elderly people from some organization to volunteer there? They're allowed to approach customers, speak to them, take their trays of food and touch them. No training, no food safety training. I saw her digging in garbage and the immediately touching people) I had my kids sit at a nearby table while I walked 20ft away to look at a menu. It was at that point was I left she approached me children and put her had on my daughter and my sons toy and said something I couldn't make out. I walked over and that was when she left which I thought was weird. We ordered the food and as I was making my way outside she approached me and entered my personal space she came uncomfortably close to my face and put her hands on me and asked if my daughter gave kisses. Again very strange. I bring my family outside I enter the store again to wait for my food as I'm waiting for my food she comes up to me and in a very genuine way asked if I worked there as if our interactions never happened, I told her no I don't and she walked away. Once I receive my food I make my way outside where she follows me and begins to talk to us I respectfully asked her for privacy and for us to be left alone it was like I was speaking another language she didn't understand and started adjusting our food trays which at one point she touched our cornbread at this point I was visibly upset and told her to leave us alone in a stern way. She left and went inside, we finished our meals and once we were done she came out again to talk to us "beautiful day we're having here" again as if we never had interactions before she started to approach my children again where at this point my pregnant wife felt so uncomfortable she grabbed my children and backed away. The woman kept approaching my wife and put her hands on her shoulders. My wife was extremely upset and went right up front to speak to an employee he nodded and agreed "uh huh uh huh no yea I totally get it okay yea yea" once my wife walked away a new unrelated customer approached that same worker and said hi how are you to which the worker my wife just spoke to said "just living the dream" as if we're the crazy ones to feel this way and he couldn't careless. One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. I'll never return. I'll tell everyone I know how awful this was. A story I'll be telling people about for years and to never come to this place. read more

We ordered the motherload since we were a party of eight. We also ordered the cobb salad. The motherload contained sausage, turkey, chicken, pulled pork, brisket and ribs. My favorite were the sausage, brisket and and ribs. For the sides, we ordered hush puppies, green beans, corn pudding and cornbread. The cornbread was okay and I am not a fan of hush puppies. This place is casual and we bussed our tables after eating. I enjoyed the BBQ sauces but I can't say I would go back if I am in the area. read more

A nice spot, nicer than what you imagine a classic bbq joint to be. They've had a tendency to run out of a relatively recent addition: pastrami. Had to find a good hot pastrami around these parts, but, when they have it, this place delivers! We've found that the full-cut versions of both their pastrami and brisket are much juicier and tastier than the trimmed versions, the trimmed versions somewhat dry... but that is easily overcome with any of the excellent flavor sauces available. You order at the counter, pick it up when called, and bus your own table... but that's all entirely appropriate for the spot. One of our favorites in town. read more

Great macaroni and cheese - I'm not even a huge Mac and cheese fan but I love City Barbeque's! Also, I enjoyed the turkey breast. I have only done curbside pickup which works very well. I haven't had an opportunity to eat inside yet, but this restaurant is in a wonderful location and the exterior looks better than the only other location I've visited (the Wilmington, NC location). The team is super responsive and generally delivers the food to your car as soon as (or, in some instances, before) you text "I'm here" if you've indicated you are on the way. Great service!!! I went with the classic Two Meats, Two Sides combo: Ribs + Brisket Mac & Cheese + Fries My friend (a regular, apparently, based on his lightning-fast decision-making) chose brisket, pulled pork, collard greens, and cornbread. The cornbread that, yes... I instantly regretted not ordering. Next time. Food came out quickly. Sauces are self-serve and range from sweet to "wicked spicy" (my description, not theirs). I landed somewhere in the middle -- spicier than I usually go, but it paired perfectly with the almost-fall-off-the-bone ribs. My friend had zero complaints. Me? Just a couple: The free Texas toast was a bit on the dry side. And once again (not my first time noticing this), the brisket was lukewarm at best. Flavor? Good. Temp? Meh. 5-3-25. Visited here before catching a flight home. Very happy I stopped in. Tasted a few different items......pork ribs were terrific, moist and tender with a nice sweet, tangy sauce. BBQ chicken was juicy and flavorful. Pulled pork and chopped brisket sandwich was excellent, as was the pulled pork nachos. The side of collared greens was also very tasty. The "naked" sliced turkey was decent but not as good as the other meat items. Hush puppies were also pretty good. Mac and cheese had a nice flavor but was a little on the mushy side. You order your food at the counter, grab your own table and they call you to pick up your order when the food is ready. A no nonsense, non pretentious place to get some good BBQ. Staff was friendly. I'm glad I don't live anywhere near this restaurant because I'd be visiting too often and that would be very dangerous for my sodium and cholesterol intake. Grabbed takeout from here recently and enjoyed my food! There's a big ol' parking lot right next to the restaurant, so it was easy to find parking. I picked up my food inside at the counter and took it home so we could tuck in. My pulled pork sandwich was delicious, and I really liked the BBQ sauce served on the side! I also got corn pudding and baked beans, and they were both very tasty. My wife really liked her two pieces of chicken and also enjoyed her green beans and mac and cheese. It was the two meats with two sides sampler (brisket, sausage, baked beans and green beans) for my husband and the 3 sides plate (baked beans, 3-cheese baked mac and potato salad) with a modelo for me. There was a ticket printing issue was not communicated to a few of us until we waited a bit. I also really wanted corn pudding but they were out of it. I haven't been in a while and have always enjoyed their food. We had them cater an after funeral party a few years back and were pleased with everything. We were at a wedding in Eastern NC approx a month ago and the food was catered by City BBQ. It was great. I went there tonight with my wife and daughter and arrived around 6:45. We waited in line and ordered our food. We paid at 7:01 per our receipt. Waited until our name was called at 7:29. Not great but not a huge deal. We should've k own by the long faces and line waiting in to go and eating in orders. And some people were visibly annoyed. Everything on our plates was room temperature to cold besides my daughters fries. They let me know when they called my name to pick up my order that they had no beans. One of the male employees got visibly annoyed when I asked what I could get as a substitute. My bad bud as my meal came with 2 meats and 2 sides and 1 side was out. Could've told me sometime during the 28 minutes it took to pull our food. Anyways, food was cold. My wife's fried okra was probably cooked 20 minutes before our order was called. The brisket was a bit heavy on the fat and was really not good. I did enjoy the St Louis style ribs even though they were room temperature. Not a good experience and I'm sure they were short staffed. They would benefit from having an actual manager and allowing the 2 woman working to actually pick the food for the orders. And why only run. 1 cash register on a Friday night? Touched myself and tried touching our food after we asked her nicely the first two times to stop. I will say this, for a chain, I was really pleased. I'm normally very skeptical of chain BBQ joints; the food often tastes way too generic and the portion sizes are too small. Not the case here! I got a half chicken and it was a good sized bird, this wasn't like eating a cornish game hen. Juicy meat, cooked well. It came with sauce glazed on it, I think I would have had the low country mustard sauce on it if I could do it over. I added a half pound of sliced smoked turkey as well. With a little extra crack of black pepper and the mustard sauce, I was in a good mood! The cornbread was baked well, it was almost dark brown in spots, but it wasn't dry. I had that later, and a drizzle of honey was a nice touch. Thankfully no kernels inside, which ruins it for me instantly! The free Texas toast was ok, but nothing special. I liked the beans, they actually have brisket in the recipe! And credit the employees. On a Sunday afternoon, it was very crowded. It was tough to get a seat anywhere inside, but the staff was working really quickly to keep sauces and drinks in stock and garbage pails empty. read more

I've ordered food from here several times, and I've had mostly good experiences. It's a convenience, and the time I can gain by not having to cook. It's always the most affordable for my small household. I've gone with the meat sampler, where I've had barbecue chicken, brisket, turkey, and smoked sausage. All of the food is pretty good. My favorite is the chopped brisket. The texture of the brisket meat is so tender and juicy. It tastes richer than any of the other meats. Typical beef flavor too. The chicken barbecue and turkey are very light and seasoned just right. I love the baked beans as the taste of maple flavor that's so hearty and flavorful. The mac and cheese are decent, but I don't think I will continue ordering it. I'm a big judge of mac since I prepare the best in the world (my family perspective, lol) This location forgot to put my bread in my take-out order. Although I don't need it, I did pay for it. I was refunded for it. My missing item annoyed me, but besides that, that sampler has been a great go-to for my protein that could last for up to two days when I don't have to cook. Excellence in a chain! Makes my heart happy to see! This is my first time at this location, and I'm happy that the fried okra recipe made it over from my usual Durham location! You can read my first contact experience over there, but suffice it to say, I have yet again slandered my grandmother's reputation by saying that a chain restaurant bests hers. Just order some, you'll see. I stopped by after a MD visit ("You're in great shape, now go grab some 'Que!") mid-afternoon on a early Spring Tuesday, and the folks serving were just as friendly as if I was their first customer, rather than someone interrupting their dinner prep work. Had my food in less than five minutes after ordering, and that okra was fresh cooked! Ambiance is "barbecue shack standard" - rolls of paper towels on the table with a few condiments, concrete floors, industrial venting overhead venting. Blues music on the stereo. 2.5-2.8 stars. Food is good. Service is good. Ambiance is good. I have issue with a few things. 2 meat combo w/ 2 sides is $14.99. Seems good. However, $3.99 extra if you pick ribs. Another $3.99 extra if you pick bone in chicken. You haven't even ordered a drink yet. That's getting too expensive! Secondly, the half chicken comes covered in BBQ sauce. That's not how it should be. That's them trying to cover up that the chicken may have sat awhile and may be getting dried out. Third, the bread is always undercooked. Should be more firm and have more garlic on it. Soggy and bland is not good. Fry's today were crispy and great. Sometimes they are not. Fix those issues and it's a 5 star.
