This review is for their grooming service - I brought my shih tzu here and asked for a "teddy bear" all rounded haircut (face and body). When I picked him up after 3 hours, his face looked it was barely touched (and washed). I had to ask the groomer (who didn't speak English so the cashier had to translate) if he can cut it shorter because the hair around his eyes was still fairly long. He was able to fix it in about 5 min but I was still not impressed by his work. The bath/brush out was just OK. He didn't come out looking as clean and fluffy as some of the other grooming places have done. I only brought him here because they are cheaper than the city and much closer to where I live. I guess you get what you pay for. I will probably take my dog back to our favorite groomer in the city next time. read more

Despite much controversy prior to grand opening, Skillman Pets seems to be off to a good start. I admire and respect the owner for heeding the public's requests not to sell puppies, but the small selection of food and toys implies that he was probably relying on that for income. Skillman Pets carries only a handful of commercial-brand foods for dogs and cats (holistic and natural, wet and dry). They're reasonably priced, so as long as you feed these brands, Skillman Pets will suit your needs fine. They also sell other pet supplies, such as grooming tools, cleaning agents, beds, collars, leashes, coats, and so on, but their selection is not that of larger warehouse-type stores. The owner is very friendly and happily gives free food samples. He seems very receptive to customer input (see first paragraph). As a small, neighborhood pet store and grooming parlor, Skillman Pets serves its purpose. But it might not suit everyone's needs. read more

I decided to bring my grumpy long haired cat to be shaved to relieve him of the pesky knots he is prone to. Surprisingly I was invited to stay in the room while he was being shaved (unlike other local grooming places). As I said, my cat is a bit of a grump in his old age so hissing was expected. I was pleasantly surprised that there was no hissing, growling, or look of panic on his face. To my delight, he waited patiently while the groomer worked his magic. It seemed like a well rehearsed dance, as if there was an understanding between the two of them. The gentle groomer made me feel at ease almost instantly and the entire process was over in 15 minutes. My cat is 14 years old, having him shaved down is a process I am all too familiar with. I can safely say that I have never had an easier, more pleasant experience. I will definitely be back. read more

I came here for the first time a couple of weeks ago with my pup and was very impressed with the service. The woman there was very friendly and genuine. Although it is a tiny store, they have a decent selection of pet supplies. I dropped of my pup and picked him up right before closing time to see a completely different looking pup. He was perfectly groomed with a new leash and a blue bandanna wrapped around his neck. Although I live by two other pet supply stores, I will definitely be taking the time out to walk to this one just because of the wonderful experience I've had so far. It took me 3 months before I finally decided to trust a groomer with Merry (shih tzu mix). Merry is usually super stressed after grooming but she was so calm and happy afterwards. The groomer was so caring and amazing with her. They showered her with love and she looks amazing. Really, the best groomer I've taken her to in the 5 years I've had her. I just got from Skillman Pets. It was such a pleasant experience! I am adopting a cat, and I needed to buy all the supply. Their prices are very affordable, and they have high quality products. People who work there are very friendly, and helpful. I can see that they really care about animals. The owner ( I guess) told me that he had rescued stray cast, and he gave me a piece of advice since I am adopting a stray cat as well. I bought almost everything my future kitty needs! I read Yelp all the time but I joined just to write this review, if that has any bearing on your opinion of my review.! My friend found a stray cat outside of her apartment, and the adorableness of this cat inspired her and her roommates to adopt him. We took him to Skillman Pets and asked their advice on what to do for him. The groomer told us he had rescued several strays before and told my friend all about the treatment he would need. They gave her a great deal on the flea bath, grooming and trimming her claws, as well as explaining what starter equipment she would need. All of the staff gave great recommendations. It was clear that they are not only knowledgeable but care a lot about the animals. I don't have any pets of my own, but I would go out of my way to go there if I did. read more

Love love love this place for groomers. My dog is a little of a pain in the butt especially when cutting nails. But Skillman does a great job. The groomer, a young man really has a talent. My dog always comes out happy and with bandana they give as a free gift. The price is decent, for my 35lb short hair.....about $45-50. read more

Love love love this place. My Lulu is a sweet rescue Shih-Tzu who had dreadlocks, long hair in some places and shaved patches in others. The groomer was super sweet and when I picked Lulu up, I could tell she liked her too. The cut is perfect and she smells so nice. I really like Skillman Pets. Prices are reasonable and the owners are friendly. Unlike other pet stores in Sunnyside, I feel like they actually care about providing good service at a reasonable price and are true animal lovers. I like that it's a family-run business and much prefer to support a small, local business even if it would be cheaper to take my dog to Petco. My dog used to absolutely dread going to the groomer... it's still not her cup of tea, but she doesn't whine quite as much when I bring her to Skillman Pets. They recently switched to cash only, apparently because it's cheaper for them as a small business. It's somewhat inconvenient but I'm still willing to come here for the dependable service. read more

I love this place...it's small but the owner is just one of the nicest and kindest guys in the hood. My dogs love him and the store, so much so that I often have to navigate our walks around the store so I'm not dragged towards it! They have premium dog and cat food at very reasonable prices. They also have loads of supplies and while I don't use grooming services for my dogs or cat, my neighbor tells me that they always do a great job on her cat! I absolutely love this place!!! We have brought our corgi here since the first day we moved into the neighborhood. The owner may be the nicest person on the earth. He cares for the dogs and the area and the people in it. The fact that anyone could give this places less than 4 stars is crazy to me. And his prices are by far the lowest ANYWHERE. Being a new doggy mom I was looking for a pet store near my college because my dog kept on scratching and I was scared he had ticks or fleas. I came into the store and was greeted by a helpful man. He helped me figure out if my dog actually had fleas or not then proceeded to help me choice the right products for my havapoo. I also ended up buying him a brush with the help of the owner's recommendation. He gave me two samples for my puppy as well. read more

I unfortunately had a not so enlightening experience with Skillman Pets yesterday. I took my Shetland Sheepdog in for his usual grooming only to find a new groomer on site. I explained to herthat he simply needed a bath, his nails cut down to an appropriate length and his hair simply trimmed up as he is a LONG HAIRED dog. I came to pick up my usually beautiful mini collie and find him with a summer puppy cut!!! I tried to be maybe a bit too nice yesterday since I do love the business and the owner and those that work there. However I believe I should have acted more upset as I cannot let it go that it is winter and my dog now has no fair and will be freeing cold this winter!!! He's a long haired dog whom now looks like a 8 week old puppy. And on top of that upon inspecting his nails, I see they were not cut down at all. I am very disappointed as I thought I had found a great groomer on my move from Princeton, NJ to Queens, NY. This new groomer is not good and I am now scared to even return back here for a grooming. The owner did offer us 20% discount but looking back that is not enough for the fact that my beloved doggie has no hair for the winter & he will not wear those doggie sweaters people use. Please beware now when you go for a grooming. : ( P.S. I'm very sad that this has happened being that I was happy to have a good local business to go to. This was a great experience, i needed a groomer for my daughter's pet Persephone, a tea cup Yorkie, my daughter is very picky and her dog is her life, so i booked an app with Skillman Pets. When we got to the place, i was greeted by a nice girl, and then my daughter was able to talk to the groomer a very loving lady, that gave us lots of options for Persephone's hair, but she kept telling us, bottom line is how short or long we wanted. When it was time to pick her up, they gave us a call and when we got there Persephone was beautiful, but of course as i said before, my daughter is a bit picky, so she wanted her hair around her face shorter, the lady sweet and cordial said, no problem, say no more, she took her again, and when she came back, Persephone was gorgeous!!! I think this place is great! I'm not really sure what some of these reviewers are talking about. I was dog sitting a bigger lab mix for a friend on vacation - and thought I'd spoil him a little and bring him in for a primping session. I made an appointment and brought him in. The receptionist asked me a few questions about how I wanted him cut - basically clipped close and even with the head. (it was during August) and she relayed this to the male groomer. I should note that the dog isn't aggressive, but does take some time to warm up to men and is totally fine with women. Also, the dog isn't the biggest fan of water. My friend says she basically has to drag him into the bathroom. (I also was upfront about this to the groomer and ladies in the front) The dog was absolutely wonderful with the groomer though! Allowed him to pick him and put him in the tub and on the table. Even sat down on the grooming table while the groomer snipped away and cut his nails. It couldn't have gone any better. Even the staff remarked on how well-behaved he was for such a large dog. They offered me to stay and wait in the shop for him to be finished, and I did. He did peek around the corner once or twice just to make sure I didn't abandon him. He came out smelling great, looking great, and adorable with the bandana they gave him. He kept it on almost the whole day. It was a little more expensive than most places I priced - but for the great service I got, and the way the dog was comfortable in the place - It was totally worth it. I would highly, highly recommend this place. Looking forward to dog-sitting again so I can bring him back! read more

They carry tons of holistic brands and the owner of this place is super nice! He's always very helpful and even lended me one of the grooming brushes because I was complaining of how expensive they are. They usually stay longer than the scheduled opening hours and if you call them up, they're very accomodating. I also take my pom here to groom. My super fluffy husky/shepherd mix Mastodon hates having his nails cut, sheds like a monster, and is not a fan of baths, so I felt slightly guilty about whoever would be subjected to having to groom him. When I brought him to Skillman Pets for the full treatment - deshedding, shampoo, nails clipped, ears cleaned, etc - my dog was welcomed with comforting reassurance that the groomer has years of experience and not to worry at all. When he was all done, he looked amazingly fluffy, super happy, and smelled like a brand new dog! I was very pleased with the service and will be bringing him back real soon! This is, without a doubt, my go-to for quick dog supply needs and grooming. The owner and his family are VERY nice and extremely obliging. Ivan (the groomer) is very knowledgeable and very good at his job. I even stopped in while walking my dog to get treats (I'd left hers at home). I didn't have my wallet on me and they let me take the treats and come back later to pay (since they see me all the time). They are lovely. The place is clean, easy to shop in and well stocked. I recently moved into the area and my cat was in desparate need of a haircut. Skillman Pets doesn't do anything other than "Furminator" grooming or a lion cut for cats which wasn't really ideal. I decided to just go with the furminator option to test the waters but was banking on a great experience based on the Yelp reviews. The appointment for my cat was scheduled at 10AM and the groomer didn't show up until way past 10:30. I didn't even get a chance to speak with him/her as I gave up and left. I got a call about an hour later saying my cat was ready to be picked up which was curious since cat grooming, in my experience, typically takes longer. $85 later (which is VERY steep for a wash and brush out) I took the cat home. It looked like nothing had been done to him aside from his nails getting clipped and some sort of flowery scent on him. He didn't look any cleaner, certainly not groomed, and still had wax in his ears. I'm not coming back to this place. read more

I definitely wouldn't say my experience here was horrible and if I HAD to go back, I would...but fortunately, the chances of that are highly unlikely. A lot of people on here have written that the owner is extremely nice and friendly, which I have to say, is at most, half true. I was shopping with my dog one day and he was there and barely even said hi, but another customer came in that he must have been familiar with and was noticeably friendlier to the other person and started giving her dog treats right in front of my dog and didn't offer mine any. Fine, be rude to me, BUT DON'T BE RUDE TO MY DOG. My poor dog looked so sad sitting there as the other dog got all the attention and treats. He also wasn't that friendly when he rung me up either, but keep in mind I'm ALWAYS friendly, I was well dressed, my dog was behaving--there was absolutely no reason for him not to like me. Ok fine, this story isn't mind-blowing in terms of customer service mis-haps, so let me talk about the product. For one thing, the selection is very very very small, I was completely underwhelmed. So I ended up getting one thing, and then immediately went to Wespaw pets. My experience there was SO MUCH BETTER. For one thing, everyone was friendly to me, the selection was WAY better, and literally some of the prices for the exact same can of dog food were cheaper there than in Skillman Pets (I have a little OCD when it comes to cross-checking prices). Maybe he has to raise his prices since he's giving out so many treats to all his "favorite" dogs. I always try to support local business, but in my opinion, I would much rather do it at Wespaw pets. read more
