A classic bar style pizza 6.9/10
Steven S.

A classic bar style pizza that is very good (not my style) with good crunch and good taste. I wasn't a fan of the crust personally, it's not your typical style pizza crust but that may be due to the "bar style" that the pizza resembles. Crunch 8:10 Taste 8/10 Flop 1/10 Crust 2/10 Undercarriage 4/10 Again the crust was really big for me, it was hard and tough and personally hurt my teeth a little bit to bite into which lowered the score a lot for me! That's the review! https://onebite.app/restaurant/skiles-tavern-holland-mi-3b55bc5b/review/aa29c145-5e6f-47ea-bdcd-0960e62e5a4d

Yes. 5 stars. They are a long time Holland staple. The staff is always hustling and slinging pizzas and drinks as fast as they can and they have a great attitude. I don't want to call this place diver but that's the best explanation. They are no frills. They have a decent selection of beer and seltzers. Their pizza is thin crust and crunchy and several options for toppings. They have a couple things that are not pizza. Their loaded nachos have a bunch of toppings including olives and mushrooms. I suggest getting their large pizza and having leftovers. Can't go wrong.

Can YOU find the onion and green pepper in this picture? Would you pay a buck twenty-five for those bits?

Wow, is this place terrible. The pizza is tolerable, but way too expensive and super basic. Look at our picture and see if you can spot the itty bitty bits of onion or green pepper for which we paid 1.25 each. It's like they took a teaspoon of frozen onion and pepper mix from Meijer and tossed it on. It wasn't cute nearly all the way through, making eating it a pain. The fact that it was quite greasy and served on a cardboard circle made it impossible to cut with the utensils provided, so we had to grease up our hands to tear it apart. It was so poorly cut, it wouldn't tear along the cut lines. The service was lousy. We walked in on a Friday afternoon to an empty dining room, and no one greeted us. Eventually someone noticed us, but didn't bother to say hi. We were seated probably more than 15 minutes before someone finally came by to ask what we wanted to drink. Our waitress was audible in the next room complaining about a customer from some other time. Real charmer, she was. She brought our receipt and read the amount to us. Didn't show it to us. Was this her way of saying, "I'm done with my shift, so if I just tell you your amount, hopefully you'll pay immediately and I can leave." The food took another 15-20 minutes to come out -- it was a single pizza. The pepperoni and sausage (which tasted like store-bought breakfast sausage, the sort of flavor you've never had on a pizza) were in OK proportions, but the onion and pepper were, as noted above, pathetic. There are no napkins at the tables. They gave us teeny tiny paper plates for the food. I despise this place. It is so incredibly poorly done that I can't believe it's still in business. In fact, when we showed up -- as noted above -- the dining room was empty. On a sunny Friday summer afternoon, when Holland was quite busy, and other establishments had plenty of traffic. I think I know why. The locals know better than to come here. This is some of the worst money I've ever spent. What a terrible ending to an otherwise decent day in Holland. Do not come here. Hopefully this place dies a swift death. For all our sakes. I'm attaching a picture, but reluctantly, because somehow it makes the pizza look "pretty good". It's not.

Always loved this place. Great pizza with a nostalgic feel. This is a wonderful hometown bar. Definitely makes me feel like I belong there. The people have always been inviting and warm and that is what makes the visit fun. I'm glad I could help a little during this tough time.

VERY limited cocktail and beer selection. Was not crowded at all and it's not difficult to see why.

It's next door to their sister restaurant, Lovejoy. Walking in, the space is very dimly lit with a nice bar and some cozy seating. We were directed to a couch and a couple of low chairs. The menu is organized into different "chapters," with different themes for each chapter. They also have beer, wine, spirit-free options, and a spirits list. I wanted something fun, so I chose the Don the Beachcomber, a rum-based tiki cocktail that is flamed tableside. My friend got the Obstacle No. 1, which is a bourbon drink that they smoke at your table. Very theatrical and fun! These drinks were $20+ so pretty pricey, but worth it for a fun occasion. We had a nice time just relaxing and catching up. I would say it's not a great spot for a large group, but definitely a fun date night place. They have a small food menu of offerings from the restaurant next door that sounded tasty. We had just eaten but I'd be interested in their small plates. I'm so glad I got to experience this place. It feels like you're transported to a secret speakeasy when you enter!

July 2025 - Holland Indoor and Outdoor Patio! In summary for…read morepersonal reasons (stated at the end of the review) I will not be back. Poor management and what turned into unfriendly vibes. $$$/$$$$ Monday Margarita Special - $5 regular or $8 premium ; add strawberry for $3.00. It was pretty empty outside on a Monday, especially Happy Hour. Happy Hour consisted of a $ amount off on appetizers and margaritas. We got the beef nachos, tempura shrimp, and salad. The 5 regular margaritas total and the food totaled to be $81 between 4 people. Regular Margarita: 9/10 - perfect mix, served in a 12oz plastic cup. Felt like the cup was filled halfway with ice before liquids were poured. I had over a quarter of a cup of icecubes left after 40 minutes of dining. Beef nachos: 8/10 - $17 - feel like there was one ingredient missing. There was queso, pico de gallo, lettuce, peppers, jalapeño and got the protein choice of beef. (Protein choices - beef, chicken or pork) Tempura Shrimp: 7/10 - $22 - Tasted like a japanese hibachi restaurant. The flavors took me home, especially with the picked diced cucumber. I loved the details and plating. There were 5 shrimp on my plate, totaling $4.40 per shrimp. Great flavors and pretty big, just pricey imo for an appetizer. Salad: 9/10 - $15 - the bowl was FILLED. No room to mix well without another plate. Croutons were unfortunately soggy. Dressing was delicious! Best caesar salad I have had in a while. Serving wasn't the greatest. Our waiter was super helpful when we asked the difference between the regular and premium margaritas. We were asked if we needed anything else after our food was served, but not anytime after that. For it barely being busy, I would have appreciated being checked on at least once even if we didn't need anything. We were waiting for her to come over because we were done and waiting for the check. It looked like mainly teen servers running the show with the manager present. (Who I think is?) The manager was sitting with a guest with two dogs. The golden retreiver came over to our table a few times, no bother, just smiles. The other dog was chilling on a chair taking in the paparazzi. When we were finished paying, we walk past the gentleman with the two dogs. I was petting the golden, and my mother was too. There was little conversation exchanged between the gentleman and my mother. After we walk away, my mother looks...confused. She informs me the gentleman said to her "I know you Asians love to gamble." Like. What? We were 2-3 tables away from him, not talking about gambling once.
