Stumbled on this tiny hole-in-the-wall sushi place located inside a general store which supports the local campground here in Birch Bay state beach. Located with easy walking distance on what was a beautiful sunny day. I only had one roll, but its presentation with the flower and green fake leaf was a nice touch and shows a little more pride in his work. I'm really happy I dropped in and would certainly return. Definitely advise ordering online as that is a way to get ahead and have your order ready. I'll bet all his rolls are great. Wouldn't give it a 5 but certainly a solid 4. read more

We were up in Blaine for a Nexus interview and decided to try Skai Sushi when they opened on a Saturday. We didn't call or order ahead as others recommended and ordered at the counter - we were the only ones in at the time. It was about a 30 min wait. We ordered the poke bowl, avocado bomb, and monster roll - plenty of food for 2 hungry adults. A little on the pricier side. The presentation lived up to the hype and the portions were generous. The avocado bomb and monster roll were definitely decadent and filling. I had higher expectations for the poke bowl - the fish tasted fresh but the pieces of fish were not smooth in texture (if that makes sense?). Maybe because of the marinade but the texture of fish stood out rougher than I would prefer so this wasn't my favorite. All in all, worth a try if you haven't already. read more

I have wanted to go to this place for a very long time...It seems though that every time I wanted to go they were closed. Mostly I think I was just hitting it on their off peak hours. The Sushi Counter ( for that is all it is, there are tables out front to eat but nothing inside and they do a very brisk take out business. I can see why they encourage you to do a call in order. It takes about 15 min to get there from Downtown Blaine, where we are. It was a beautiful drive, through farmland and lovely little neighborhoods. When you do finally get there it is in the back of a convenience store, whose owners ( I assume, as they look to live out back) are super sweet and very helpful. The food in one word would be... Excellent. The Salmon Nigiri was tasty and fresh, a bit on the thin side but I understand how economics works. The Rainbow Roll was delicious. The sauce was a bit heavy but that was my fault for not asking to go light. The Skai roll was my favorite the crab salad was tasty and light the veg were crispy. The wasabi was perfection in its strength and smoothness. And Finally a Sushi restaurant that gives you enough Ginger when you ask for extra! Overall it was a delight! The owner and his wife are obviously doing what they are gifted at and the clientele know it! The bill came to about $60 with 20% tip, so about what it would be in a restaurant in the city... a bit pricy but well worth the convenience of having it right here in sleepy little Blaine. We were in the area for a quiet weekend trip and came across this place on yelp. Honestly, I almost missed it because the icon for skai sushi is directly on top of the icon for the convenience store it is located inside. Wow this place blew me away! Reading the yelp reviews had me excited to check this place out, and I was very impressed. While it is inside of a convenience store, I would definitely recommend ordering ahead or being prepared to wait, as it probably not gonna be a quick bite. We came right when they opened for dinner and ended up waiting around 30 min for our food, but in our time ordering they had already received two large online orders, so we were lucky with the timing. These rolls were so big and very tasty. Just look at the filling in those california rolls!! I don't think I've ever seen so much. Overall, fish was fresh, rolls were beautiful, and our leftovers were enough for another meal. I think we spent around $75, so this was a pretty decent price for sushi (not cheap though). Exceptional! That's the word that perfectly describes Skai Sushi. Traveling seven hours from the East Coast for a three-hour meeting, I initially thought my trip might be wasteful. That was until I discovered Skai. The experience was worth every mile, thanks Yelp! Who would have thought you could find such a gem in a convenience store? The sushi was excellent, the portions were generous, and the presentation was remarkable. I highly recommend making the trip to experience it for yourself. The time and care they take to prepare each meal are well worth the wait. In all my dining experiences in Washington DC, nothing comes close to the quality at Skai Sushi. Legit sushi. You will be surprised because the convenience store it's in doesn't look like it should have high quality food anywhere near it. But the curtained off sushi kitchen has fit it going on. What a fabulous hole in the wall place! It is located in a convenience store in a random road away from downtown Blaine. They were very busy but made time for us before they closed. Located in the back of the small Birchwood Market outside of Birch Bay State Park, Skai Sushi is an unassuming (and not easy to find) little gem of a takeout window that's gained quite a local following. In fact, it was their eye-popping photos popping up on my friends' Yelp pages that drew me in for a visit on a recent summer day. I have to admit, I'm more of a traditional nigiri sushi lover and not the biggest fan of "avant garde" sushi rolls, which is mostly what Skai offers. Undaunted by the lack of my beloved nigiri, I ordered some jalapeno bombs and a spider roll. The bombs were sheer, hot, spicy amazingness. The large halved jalapenos were stuffed with crab and cream cheese, deep fried, and doused in a sweet soy sauce. The spider roll was also delicious, full of soft-shell crab and hot rice, and also topped with the sweet sauce. The portions were large and filling - I ate a few precious bites in my car then took the rest home to enjoy later. Excellent quality, and I'm a bit of a sushi snob! Don't be turned off by the location (inside a convenience store), they take their time to make great sushi rolls and it was worth the wait. We called on a rainy Thursday night and placed our order for pickup, and they said it was a 40 minute wait time. When I arrived it was ready to go and the staff were all very friendly and nice (and masked!). We ordered the miso soup (4/5), Birch Bay Roll (5/5), the Seattle Roll (4.5/5), and the 12pc nigiri (4/5). Everything was delicious and the presentation was beautiful. Do not sleep on this place. Yes it is in a mini-mart, yes it takes a long time to get your food and yes it is a little pricier than the tired old teriyaki place you get California Roll from for the last ten years. You will not find better sushi in Western Washington than you do right here. I have eaten sushi all over the world including Japan and this is right up there with the best ever. I am not joking. They prepare everything with love, they even put an orchid on each dish they prepare! It is truly amazing food and anyone who knows good sushi will be thrilled to find this place. There is one negative review of this place and all the others are 5's. The one has to be a competitor who could not badmouth the food, they could only complain it wasn't open when they wanted it to be! What does that tell you? The one downside, if you can find one, is there is no sit-down table service restaurant - it's take-out only. So get a beach mat, a bottle of wine, or Sake, and order your sushi before you leave the house. When you pick it up you go down to the beach and enjoy the view or sit at a picnic bench at the state park and enjoy the view - it's heaven! Try Skai for yourself. You won't be disappointed.
