Escolar Nigiri, Salmon Nigiri, inferno roll and Birch Bay Roll

We were just arriving to Birch Bay and wanted to have dinner. I was doing research and I called this restaurant for Sushi. Even though all the reviews said it was takeout only, it was still surprising to find this in the back of a grocery store. The owner was very pleasant and the food was ready shortly after we got there. Everything was delicious and the presentation was beautiful for takeout. We will definitely come back.

We were in the area for a quiet weekend trip and came across this place on yelp. Honestly, I almost missed it because the icon for skai sushi is directly on top of the icon for the convenience store it is located inside. Wow this place blew me away! Reading the yelp reviews had me excited to check this place out, and I was very impressed. While it is inside of a convenience store, I would definitely recommend ordering ahead or being prepared to wait, as it probably not gonna be a quick bite. We came right when they opened for dinner and ended up waiting around 30 min for our food, but in our time ordering they had already received two large online orders, so we were lucky with the timing. These rolls were so big and very tasty. Just look at the filling in those california rolls!! I don't think I've ever seen so much. Overall, fish was fresh, rolls were beautiful, and our leftovers were enough for another meal. I think we spent around $75, so this was a pretty decent price for sushi (not cheap though). Truly a great find

Fantastic hidden gem! Check hours then order online (in advance) and they custom-make. it is well worth the wait (don't be impatient or attempt to insist/scold/bully to jump line--saw one tone-deaf, huffy human try to). Caring service. Accommodated a gluten free eater! Sake also sold in cooler to the right of counter. Tables in the back. Quaint and beachy!

Sauce running down each piece in perfect proportion.

Exceptional! That's the word that perfectly describes Skai Sushi. Traveling seven hours from the East Coast for a three-hour meeting, I initially thought my trip might be wasteful. That was until I discovered Skai. The experience was worth every mile, thanks Yelp! Who would have thought you could find such a gem in a convenience store? The sushi was excellent, the portions were generous, and the presentation was remarkable. I highly recommend making the trip to experience it for yourself. The time and care they take to prepare each meal are well worth the wait. In all my dining experiences in Washington DC, nothing comes close to the quality at Skai Sushi. If I'm ever given 24 hours to travel to Bellingham, I won't complain--I'll see it as an opportunity to visit Saki again. I wish the owners continued success.

Legit sushi. You will be surprised because the convenience store it's in doesn't look like it should have high quality food anywhere near it. But the curtained off sushi kitchen has fit it going on. The food was ready almost to the minute from what they said. Excellent service. You can't eat there but I called in the under and it was perfectly prepared. I loved the spiciness and the flavor of the skai roll. If you're in the area, I highly recommend.

What a fabulous hole in the wall place! It is located in a convenience store in a random road away from downtown Blaine. They were very busy but made time for us before they closed. We ordered Rainbow, TNT, Crunchy and Shrimp Tempura. They tasted fresh and delicious! They also have wonderful portions. Please note you need to order online which we were not aware of with being out of town. They were very nice and accommodating! Will definitely have again when we visit next.

Wonderful sushi in an unexpected setting! Place an order on line, with a scheduled "ready time", then pop in to pick it up. Yes, it is in a convenience store...No, it is not gas station sushi. This fish is so fresh, you will not need to dunk it in soy and Wasabi. Seriously wonderful Nigiri and rolls. We have been there twice already. The first time, we went down to Birch Bay and sat on a log and watch the sunset. The second time, we took it to Beach Cat Brewing and enjoyed it with delicious handcrafted beer, again at sunset. Highly recommend!!!

Located in the back of the small Birchwood Market outside of Birch Bay State Park, Skai Sushi is an unassuming (and not easy to find) little gem of a takeout window that's gained quite a local following. In fact, it was their eye-popping photos popping up on my friends' Yelp pages that drew me in for a visit on a recent summer day. I have to admit, I'm more of a traditional nigiri sushi lover and not the biggest fan of "avant garde" sushi rolls, which is mostly what Skai offers. Undaunted by the lack of my beloved nigiri, I ordered some jalapeno bombs and a spider roll. The bombs were sheer, hot, spicy amazingness. The large halved jalapenos were stuffed with crab and cream cheese, deep fried, and doused in a sweet soy sauce. The spider roll was also delicious, full of soft-shell crab and hot rice, and also topped with the sweet sauce. The portions were large and filling - I ate a few precious bites in my car then took the rest home to enjoy later. Next time I'm in the area I'll definitely try another one of their amazing-sounding rolls.

Talk about a hidden gem. This place is tucked inside a mini mart but delivers high quality sushi rolls in an area that's desperately lacking in food options. I've tried the TNT roll and Dragon roll and both were delicious. They're large and quite saucy so even one roll is quite filling for lunch. It's easy to order online but it can be a long wait so get your order in right away. Love having this option!

Love their sushi! My all time favourite place to get sushi, they are a lovely family, and always make the best rolls. My favourite roll is the Rock n roll!!! It is super fun and good, it is topped with pop-rocks, sounds weird i know, but it is absolutely delicious! I always order a poke bowl if i dont know what to get, and it NEVER disappoints! The Avocado bombs are well the bomb! 1000/10 recommendations for this place

What made this place stand out to me the most was the bartender whipped up the most absolute AMAZING espresso martini I've ever had. Just happened to have a conversation about how much I love a good espresso martini. I've had many but this place wins 1st place! There was also live music later in the evening and the environment was very casual and up beat. I will definitely be returning for another espresso martini in the near future! Tons of wine options to choose from.

There is definitely at least one back room, but the main dining room is a bright, airy space that has access to a patio where may even be some live music playing. The tables are gorgeous - all live edge, which might create a bit of an issue if you have short arms and are used to stealing bites across the table, but they are absolutely beautiful and a nice nod to the area. The wine list is extensive and a bit overwhelming, but the service is happy, friendly, and very knowledgeable. In fact, I love when servers don't know, admit it, and find the answer for you - it's humble and shows they really care at getting you what you want. We got the orange wine, which is a new favorite of mine. It's like a rose for reds. Rose:White::Orange:Red. More savory, still light, and best chilled. We had the beet hummus app, which is definitely best eaten with your hands. It's light and delicious. We had the miso black cod, a personal favorite, and the lasagna for dinner and while both were good, the accoutrements with the cod were the true standout. Amazing and I could probably eat two of them. As the restaurant operates on a seasonal menu, we had a strawberry rhubarb cobbler for dessert. I know there is Sunday Brunch, and I can't wait to try it. It's not the cheapest, but it's one of the nicer restaurants in Whatcom, and is definitely worth your pennies. Everything about it makes for a truly nice experience, and we'll definitely be back.

MaguroGuy had decent reviews and was not too far off the highway, so we decided to detour there. We overordered (as you can see from photos) but since we're used to things being tiny and unsatisfying, we had no idea what we were getting into. The lunch special is great, and my companion didn't need the extra rolls with it, though they were really tasty. I ordered a smattering of rolls, and was quite full. The fish is good, there are slightly heavier on rice than other places, but at least there was a good variety to choose from. We opted to skip the sashimi platter as it was $80, way higher than anywhere else we normally go. The parking is fine, it's in a lot, and it was daytime but had a decent number of lights. Service was quite friendly, and the ambiance of the restaurant was very cozy, despite it being a decent size. There are a hundred other sushi places in the area to try, but MaguroGuy was a solid experience and I would go back.

The hamachi nigiri was large, with a strange yellow/orange coloring (I have had hamachi hundreds of times and never ever seen it look like this). The texture was mushy, the flavor unlike any hamachi I have had before - a tough one. The salmon oshi was cold and the salmon tasted fishy/old (again, have had this many many places, so it isn't like I am judging against the first time trying oshi). Lastly, the old owner used to have a Banana Crunch Roll that was the bomb. Why this owner didn't learn how to make it and keep it on the menu is a head scratcher. On a positive note, the size of the fish portions were generous.
