We've been on a quest to try a new sushi place every time we have a craving, so this time we went to Kami. It was decently crowded - no wait, but certainly not empty on a Saturday night around 645. It's a big, airy place with a few private rooms. Service was a tad on the slow side to start, but was normal after we had a server assigned. A plus - they have 14oz hot sake in a tea pot. We got some of the more interesting things on the menu, including the jalapeno popper which was FILLED with tuna. Worth it, would order again. We ordered several rolls, and the deluxe sashimi. The sashimi is presented beautifully, even if there is no red clam. Everything tasted fresh, and it came out pretty quickly. I enjoyed the experience and though there are more sushi places to try, I wouldn't mind another trip here. read more

We've been planning to eat here and finally had the chance last Saturday. We were not disappointed, their food was yummy, their place was clean and had a great ambience, their service was awesome and very hospitable lastly, their value was worth it. Initial visit and IMPRESSED from the time we entered the restaurant until we departed with smiles & full stomachs! Were meeting a friend and arrived just as they were opening @ 4:30. A welcoming greeting in a clean well presenting environment. Must say the menu is impressive and all encompassing so allow yourself time to peruse. Starting with our "usual" Hamachi Nigiri; delicious properly prepared with the more than generous serving. Then on to the sushi; the Exotic rolls were well composed with comprehensive "flavors" of all ingredients, the Combo was composed with nicely varied selections. First of all, note all the health inspection violations on Yelp. That should tell you immediately not to dine here, especially when they are serving sushi. it was a train wreck experience. The parking area is highly congested and at times difficult to navigate in and out of. I came in and many people working there saw I was there, but nobody greeted me after a very long time. After a long wait trying to get the attention of any employee looking at me with blank stares, an older lady, who I guess was the host greeted me, after aimlessly wandering around clueless prior. I asked if I could see a menu before being seated and that was quite difficult because she seemed to barely speak English and it was clear communicating with customers was very uncomfortable, and she seemed to try to avoid any communication and immediately walk away as much as possible. She handed me some paper to go menu vs a real menu, but it did have pictures. I reviewed it and quickly sized up that this looked like many other low end trying to look trendy Japanese or Sushi restauran in the area. It was clear from the menu that this was more Korean Japanese fusion vs traditional Japanese food. The menu had all the dime a dozen dishes, and some Korean dishes, but their prices were notably higher than other similar restaurants in this area. After waiting forever to get her attention again, I was able to seize the attention of the hostess to ask her if I could order any of the chicken dishes with white meat chicken breast. I was very disappointed to hear they only use cheaper thigh dark meat for all of their chicken dishes and that they can't make any dish with white meat. I immediately classified this place up as somewhere I definitely need to leave and avoid never to return. What the heck is it in this area with all of these posing "Japanese" restaurants that are a detriment to the cuisine in general. I wish more restaurants would open and do things right and serve quality food with competent service vs thinking the bare minimum can be done at high prices to cheat as many clueless customers as possible out of their money without meeting any traditional standard of quality from yesteryear. Meanwhile I hope customers wise up, stop going here, and demand something better needs to show up to earn their money. That is where I'm at with this place. read more

I am surprised at reviews about service but those were many years ago. I have been here 3 times in the last few weeks and it is the fastest service I have received at a sushi place. I love that the ingredients are fresh and not over seasoned. The rolls are still unique and tasty without tonnes of sauce. The strawberry roll was a pleasant surprise. You know a sushi place is good when they have a strong basic sushi menu and it is fun when they get creative too. Each time I go I try a new item and I have yet to be disappointed. I am not a huge fan of the salads because I find they have too much dressing but you can always ask for it on the side. Plus, who goes for sushi and orders salad anyways? The tuna appetizer and sockey salmon sashimi are melt-in-your-mouth. I am glad this isn't so close to me or I would be eating there far too often for my own good. Been going here for years. Love love love this restaurant and never disappointed. The interior is just fantastic and creates a dashing atmosphere. It is great for couples to go on dates and families. I've basically tried all the items on the menu. Staff is always accommodating and friendly. My personal favourites are: - APPETIZER- Ebiyonnaise: Prawn tempura topped with house mayo sauce. - SPECIAL ROLL- Baked Salmon Roll: Cream cheese, yamagobo (Japanese pickled vegetable), avocado and fresh baked salmon. They bake the roll in the oven which melts the cheezy delight that's on top of the roll. - ROLL- Negitoro Roll: Not your typical toro and green onion roll. They mix the toro and a special sauce (I think it's soy sauce and sesame oil?). - ENTREE- Spicy Chirashi: It's assorted sashimi in a huge bowl with rice, spring mix, and spicy sauce. read more

Seated right away. This is a small restaurant with high ceilings. Table seating as well as bar seating. They have a wide variety of assorted sushi and sashimi, and combos. However, if you love rolls, this is your place! There are 4-5 pages on their menu. Other offerings are party trays and, different udon and teriyaki. Drinks: limited selection of beer, wine and sake. Service was prompt and friendly. Complimentary edamame! Hamachi kama: Did not see it on the menu so we asked. The waitress didn't know what this was but she was happy to inquire. Here's the run down: Uni: good although when I get two different colored uni, I wonder about that. Deluxe sashimi (21 pieces): OK. Everything seemed to taste the same aside from the Spanish mackeral. Well there are many things that didn't impress me about this place. The main thing is that the waitress didn't know how to answer our questions. So....long story short. We ordered something and asked for apart of it to be left out due to allergies. The dish came and was not allergen free. Neither of us messed with it or ate part of it or anything. But just said nicely that we didn't want it and she took it away. She asked if we wanted to take it to go instead. We said No. And that we just couldn't have it. She said next time to order something else. .....and then the item was on the bill! Are you freaking kidding me!! She said that we had ordered it and we had to pay for it....oh but we could still take it home. ...... hmmmm hello!!! I've been here 10 times or so. The quality is decent but it is pricey in my opinion. What prompted me to post here is the dwindling service. The wait staff try to memorize your order and they always forget at least one item or get something wrong. It's not usually an issue because I love all sorts of sushi and we usually order too much. Still, it's kinda weak. Yesterday we sent back a tuna cocktail which is Tina marinated in soy, sesame oil and has sesame seeds in it, because it tasted fishy (I think beach stank is the technical term). They took it back and told me the fish was actually a different kind of tuna than usual and that's why... OK ---THE KICKER--- - is that I requested my negitoro roll that was clearly forgotten and it came made of the now warm tuna cocktail I sent back minutes before. WOW!!! This chef should give his head a shake. Isn't it obvious that a negitoro roll is made with non-sesame oil marinated warm beach stanky tuna? Looking for a logical explanation but I'm lost for words. 3.5 stars. I don't really understand the poor reviews. This is one of the times I realize the limitation of Yelp because I regret not going to Kami because of all the bad reviews of this place. Their exterior is pretty modest looking but once inside, it's way nicer than one would expect. They don't have rich decor per se but it's bigger than one would imagine and has a modern interior look with their dark lighting and the bar area. I've had their Flower Roll and it is delicious. They also have other very appetizing looking specialty rolls on the menu and the rolls were very good. One caveat I have noticed here is that you have to ask for wild salmon for their salmon maki rolls and they charge you like an extra dollar for them. While this isn't my favourite place to go for sushi, this is a very solid and dependable place to go to. read more

After many visits to this place I am never returning again. We were seated for about 45 minutes after placing our order and I was noticing people who were seated after us were eating. I asked "a waitress" when our food was coming because the one who took our order never came back to our table... She came back with a shocked expression that our order never made it to the kitchen!!! 45 minutes of sitting in front of them and absolutely no presence of thought about our table. They never even came back to refill our tea. I was very surprised the manager never came over to deliver the news, and make apologies. First visit to Kami, located in the strip mall across from 5 guys burgers, decorated similar to a moxies,keg,cactus club (which should be a warning sign right away the food is going to suk!) looks like leftover hearts from valentines day still on the wall when you walk in.... (Aug 2012) the food,: quickly prepared and rushed to the table, i ordered tonkatsu which was faintly crispy and undercooked on the inside, bleh! ordered some rolls for $9 ,they arrived at the table like a stack of poker chips and were just that thin, they contained rather pathetic slivers of avocado if i had known they were that cheap on avocado i would have brought one from home for them (NOT KIDDING) tuna sushi was ok, again very small pieces $3.50 for two still not full i ordered a boneless chicken karaage for $9 which was less than 1/2 a chicken breast pop-corned, tasted hard and oily so yea, not impressed on my first visit, $40 and left hungry, the staff is friendly, obviously the cost of the location/interior design leaves little in the budget for quality product or the training to the chefs to prepare it with some pride. Check out my review of king sushi at15238 North Bluff Road in White Rock, a 2 person operation that isn't pretty but the quality of the food you are being served easily beats Kami's, no fillers, poker chip rolls or fish slivers. I don't get the bad reviews either! It always amazes me that ppl don't give restaurants a second chance. Just look at your own workplace! Not every day is roses. We certainly don't wake up in the morning intending to do a bad job!!! My kids and I LOVE this place. My teenager and I sneak here sometimes...it's a great way to get one on one time with her. The ninja sushi is my son's favorite...the madman roll is my 6 year old daughter's pick every time. The staff are super friendly and care...perhaps language is a barrier at times but so what?! The quality of the sushi is about average, and everything else in the restaurant is kinda pricey in my opinion. I tried out the oyakodon. It was actually quite good, but the broccoli on the stuff was actually frozen. That was a bit shocking. The interior is very nice, giving you a comfortable feeling. Consistently good, fresh sushi. Try the Red Mountain Roll, the Ishi Yaki Bowl or Udon. Service can be iffy sometimes but the sushi is great.

The kappa rolls here are done unlike most places and have rice on the outside of the roll as well which I really liked. They also included sesame seeds which are amazing on kappa rolls. A family member I went with ordered the Red Mountain Roll and she said that the tuna didn't taste fresh so she was quite disappointed. When my wife and I first moved to South Surrey in 2013, this was our go-to place for Japanese food. We visited here at least once every other week. Know the place well enough to recognize pretty much every waitress there. Then in about a couple of years, everything started going downhill. My wife had stomachache a couple of times after dining here. We started seeing different waitresses. Not sure about chefs but definitely felt like a new management. Finally the bottom fell out during the one time I met with a friend and his family there for dinner. Long story short, there was something in his wife's calamari salad. Something with, uhm, wings (no not the buffalo kind of wings). Needless to say, we stopped dining here. We finally decided to give Kami another chance this winter, amid all the recent good reviews. So far it's been good again, no stomach bugs, no real bugs. Hopefully it stays this way. read more

Absolutely love this sushi restaurant. Great interior, very clean and great for dates or dinner. Prices are good, especially for the quality of the food; very impressed with the yummy sushi.
