Knowledgeable and helpful staff. There were a lot of contractors coming in and out placing straight forward orders (which confirmed I was at the right place for good pricing and quality). Not being a landscape contractor by trade myself, I needed a bit more hand holding/help figuring out what I needed and they took the time to help me finalize my order and explain the differences in the various options available along with different shipping options. This place is the Best! The day before I had gone to 3 other landscape yards in the Tri Valley. I walked around for pretty long looking at all their minimal selections but not once did anyone approach me to ask if I needed help. So I thought coming LH Voss was going to be the same experience.. I was not optimistic but thought why not give it a shot. I couldn't have been so wrong. They had a huge selection! Way more than Morgan's (at least for rocks). Also as I was aimlessly walking looking for some materials, One of the workers named Andrew who was operating the heavy loading machine stopped and asked me if I needed help. He spent time and even gave me his phone number in case I had any questions to just text or call him. Front desk was super professional. Because I didn't have a truck, I was shoveling it into my minivan with a small pointer shovel I had and it was painstakingly slow so another employee asked if I wanted to use their shovel which saved me so much time and energy. Another worker who saw that I was scooping a whole lotta rocks came by and gave me suggestions on what I could've done or can do in the future to make my experience less difficult. Just a bunch of friendly, helpful, professional guys at this yard, whereas when I was at other places, not a ghost in sight. We have been landscaping our front yard ourselves and have made many trips to LH Voss to select and buy boulders. The yard guys and the office staff have been great. I could take rock up to 550 lbs on my trailer, but when we fell in love with a 2200 lb boulder, we had it delivered. We were given a 2 hr window, but 10-15 minutes into the window, the delivery driver called saying he was leaving the yard and would arrive in 15-20 minutes. He did and forklifted the boulders into place (1200 lbs and 2200 lbs). I told him he could drive on our new side driveway, but he asked how old it was and when I said 2 months, he said he would find another path. Amazing consideration! We had used LH Voss before and were happy. This time was much more extensive and they really all acted like Voss is a family owned and run business. Haven't any idea if it is, but everyone we dealt with was exceptionally friendly and professional acting. And their pricing seems more than fair. Will definitely use them again if we need more rock! read more

So I see the comments. The way I see it, this is a rock house - not a five star restaurant. Wake up people. Get real. My experience was quite positive. I've had two truck loads delivered so far with some final mulch and rock to be ordered next week. The drivers have been amazing - dumping the rock right where I needed it with no attitude ever. They backed up into my backyard, with 6 inch fence clearance on each side of the dump truck. No issues. I do wish they had a pricing sheet of some sort as that would've helped my process (and family discussions on what to buy). But it all worked out. I would do 4.5 stars but I need to round up. read more

Do landscape material companies train salespeople to be rude? Maybe it is a requirement to work there. We just came back from there and I'm sure they will remember us after reading this review. Just like another reviewer mentioned below, the salesperson at the counter is about as un-friendly as they come. I was there on another occasion a week ago to look at materials and he was in a bad mood then, so perhaps he just isn't happy about his life or business. Seems we are not the only people with this opinion. Fortunately, the people working in the yard were nice and helpful, but have inaccurate information. This is the bosses fault, not the employee's fault, but I bet the boss will yell at them anyway because he is never wrong (so he thinks). However, our biggest problem is the way they price things. We were looking to get a truck load of mahogany bark and the sign posted beside it read $49 per yard. While talking to a helper out in the yard, he says the price changed a couple of YEARS ago and it is now $52. Geez if it change 2 years ago, why not change the sign? Then we go inside and talked to grumpy. He says the price changed 2 WEEKS ago, not two years ago and the price is now $55. So why can't these people get their story straight and communicate. Even if it was changed 2 weeks ago, they should have changed the sign right away. Based on the attitude, I'm thinking they purposely do this to mislead people. Three years ago was the last time we bought bark there and they were much friendlier and even gave us a 10% CSAA discount. Clearly we will never go there again and if you do, don't say I didn't warn you about the attitude and pricing. They act like they are doing you a favor to sell you material at secretly inflated prices. May 2015 and I'm adding this update. We finally went to Home Depot and bought the same brown bark in 2 Cu Ft. bags. It took a lot of bags since 27 bags = about 1 cubic yard; however, after doing it this way, we much prefer doing it in bags instead of having a big truck dump it in our driveway and then having to clean up the mess afterward. Delivery of the bags was cheaper than delivery cost from Voss. The biggest advantage is that the cost was 60% of the price so on our project we saved over $200 !!! Also, it was a lot easier carrying the bags to the location where we wanted to spread the material instead of having to put it in a wheel barrow and getting it to difficult hillside locations. Now I don't know why I was stupid enough to ever consider having to buy it in bulk. The HD process was a lot simpler and cheaper. read more

This place is exactly as Yelp describes a three star review: A-OK. The people who work here are not friendly, but I was there to buy a truck load of rocks so I didn't care much about friendliness. Truth be told, the guys here are not unfriendly, and these days I actually prefer the stoic workers at Voss to the faux cheerful people at other retail places. So I walked in, told the sales guy what I was looking for, he showed me the samples and I picked out the type of rock I needed. 5 minutes from walking in to having receipt in hand...I pulled my truck around to the rock yard and the front loader operator silently loaded up my truck and I was gone. A total of about 10 minutes from parking to leaving with a loaded truck. I wish more businesses were this efficient. Again, if you like to shmooze and get your butt kissed by salespeople, this isn't your place. The prices are ok and the service is fast and the quality is decent. A-OK. read more

The compost I got from them was 10% plastic/glass. The dirtiest compost I've ever seen, and it was small pieces of plastic so I couldn't even sieve them out. I tried to do it by hand and ended up with a 2 gallon bucket of plastic pieces after going through a garden bed's worth of compost. Just horrible. read more

Voss was easy to work with for our project. We installed turf in our front yard and ordered our base rock from Voss. They offered and recommended a few options and had reasonable prices. He was able to carefully dump the rock right in the middle of our yard and save us from hauling it across the driveway. I have no complaint's about L.H. Voss and my wife and I have bought from this landscaping business a few time's already. As you know California is in a drought, I worked very hard to keep my front lawn green during the hot summer month's. Well I had to let the grass die and so with that my wife and I took out the dead lawn and started landscaping the front yard. We went to L.H. Voss and purchased several rock's and some tan bark. Since I had a truck I had the tan bark put in the bed of my truck. We also purchased a huge 900# rock and had that delivered to our home. The rock was delivered and the employee from L.H. Voss placed the rock in the corner of our yard near the garage and driveway. No problem what so ever. Our home is a corner lot and the front yard is divided by the walkway leading up to the front door. Anyway we started doing the other section of our front yard and had gone back in summer 2015 and purchased some more rock, and some of the rocks had to be delivered to our home. This went smoothly and the rock was placed in the spot we had chosen by the delivery guy without issue. With that said I will do business with them again as we need to finish the other section of our front yard. We have also added drought tolerant plants and with the rock look's more natural. Less work trying to keep up my lawn and using less water in the process. read more
