Customer service is definitely something this place knows nothing about. Went to get a yard of top soil. Walked in, no hello.."what do you need"? No bigge I am okay with that, the young punk at the counter told me to go to a specific bay after paying. No one shows up, eventually an older worker comes up to me and asks me if I needed something while I am waiting in 100F heat. Um yes, the office didn't tell you I was out here waiting for 10 minutes? Just very rude customer service. I was at the cashier paying for the rocks I was purchasing. While waiting for the transaction to process, the phone rings and the guy ringing me up answers. I had one more question at the end, and then he says to the person on the phone, "Sorry I can't get this guy (referring to me) to stop talking." Note that I was already being helped when the phone rang. He just came across as one of those angry people who are just rude because of their own problems. Just completely unnecessary. read more

Ordered 6 cubic yards of rocks for my back yard. Very professional and seemed experienced in what I had wanted. Delivery fee and value seemed good to me and I ordered just nuff to get the job done. They were to deliver in a few days after I bought the rocks which were about 3/4 " and they were prompt and efficient and friendly too. Would definitely buy from them again! Before I bought the stones I wanted I was helped by a very helpful man who showed me where to look for the kind I wanted and explained to me a little bit about them too. Very helpful staff :) And the driver was very helpful in dropping the stones in an orderly fashion as well. read more

Went in to cochran's today to buy some gravel. Definitely never going back. The guy at the front counter was nice enough and gave us their current 2022 price list and helped us buy some salt and pepper gravel at $110 p/ cubic yard according to the price sheet. After walking just outside I noticed that they charged us $130 p/cubic yard, we back in to ask why we were overcharged. The same guy who helped us apologized and offered to call the owner to see what could be done about the price discrepancy. At this time the owner, not knowing that he was on speaker phone, was very rude and unprofessional and said that he wasn't going to eat the mistake and we could either buy it or don't. I reply "wow, you do know you are on speaker phone right?" At this point the owner comes in to the office and proceeds to be rude some more. I would have been satisfied with a simple "sorry about the mix up but the price is the price and I can't help it", instead of lowering the price, I understand that a mistake is just a mistake, and they happen sometimes. So, in shock about how rude the owner was, I left with my purchase intact, when on my way home I decided that I didn't want to give my business to someone so rude. We called them back and spoke to the first guy who helped us. We asked for our order to be cancelled and said it was because of the owners rudeness not because of the price difference. At this point the owner grabbed the phone, yelled at us and was very rude. He accused us of just trying to get $70 off our 550 dollar purchase, and said we would never be satisfied, to which we reply it wasn't about the money only your rude mouth. He completely missed the whole point‍ I said I would never do business with you and your attitude and asked for a refund which he did give after yelling and arguing with us for a couple minutes. Just wanted to post my experience at cochrans and maybe save someone else a big headache and a few insults. Do yourself a favor and get your landscaping materials elsewhere, at a least at big box stores you expect poor customer service ‍ read more

I ordered a couple deliveries of gravel and a mixed compost/soil for raised beds. Great deals; delivered on time where we wanted it. Only downside is that our plants are struggling in the raised bed; the mix we got is clearly not premium. But we saved a ton of money and will add some compost and eventually the dirt will improve. read more

For under $40 I got my Ranger truck bed filled up with excellent garden dirt. The people that work here went above and beyond to help me out since I was a big dork and didn't realize I had to take off my tanneau cover! So they helped me take it off (borrowed their ratchet), filled up my truck and then I put my cover back on. read more

We went on a Saturday and were looking for cultured stone. The displays were not great, and they didn't have a catalog for us to take home, but the men were friendly and helpful. The price for El Dorado Ledge Stone seems reasonable. They also have some beautiful natural stone, which we will be purchasing for the hearth. We returned on Monday to purchase and received a call that our stone was in by Wednesday. Good service! When I picked up the stone, I waited less than five minutes for someone to place it in my truck. Alex then followed up and got me the name of some recommended installers (floor to ceiling fireplace), one of which I'll be using. Overall, good experience. read more

Last year when went there they were actually helpful nut last time I went they didn't even help like before. I needed some crushed granites and asked the guy to show me what they have and the guy told me go to the yard and they are on your left. Well we did and their signs are unreadable and they had two rows so didn't know which left. Had to walk for 20 minutes then go back inside to see if we got the right thing (which we did) Throughout the whole time we were the guy was just sitting all the way in the back. Today, my 73 year old father went to pick up salt and pepper rock and was told to bag it himself. Unbelievable disregard for the customer and let alone abilities. After filling two bags he was done. He physically couldn't do it and someone who didn't work there helped put them into his truck. Never again.... you just lost three generations of customers. Home Depot is better than this! read more

Purchased materials from them for my upcoming sidewalk and driveway pour as my contractor recommended them to me. Had to dig through 3' weeds to find my tile but loved the material. I asked two different workers about returning my leftover tiles as I wasn't sure how many I would need. Was told that any leftovers could be returned. I double-checked to make sure because I told them that I wasn't sure how much we needed. Today we tried to return them and was first told that materials could NOT be returned. With some arguing, then they said we could return remaining pieces but there is a 25% restocking fee. Nowhere in the shop did it say anything about a restocking fee or no refunds. Then it came to the tiles which were broken when we took them out of the box and I was told that they purchase them that way and we should expect to have 15% breakage of tile. Can't believe that they expect the customer to dig through weathered boxes that are falling apart in their yard and then expect you to pay for ones that are broken. He said they could not re-sell them! I said that I couldn't use them!!!! Then, when we were leaving we told the "person in charge" who the two people were that told us about we could return remaining material - they were right there with him at the counter - and he said "Oh well I'll speak to them later and let them know how bad they were", obviously being sarcastic toward us since they were right there. The first couple trips were great, the young guy with the earrings was very nice and helpful. when I asked a question about how much bark should fit in the back of my truck, the owner piped in and was completely out of line. The horn he has attached to his chair, is was I am assuming is a "Whiner Horn". so rather than listening to me and explaining how much bark fits, like the other guy was trying to do before being interrupted, he honked his horn and laughed like at if it say I know nothing, as he rudely corrected me on the amount. We shopped around for Belgard pavers and Cochran Materials had the best price. They delivered the pavers along with the base rock and sand in the time promised (the owner Kyle even checked my husband's calculations to assure we had ordered the correct amount of each material). I love our new paver stone patio that we installed so much that we are heading back to Cochran Materials to order more pavers. My husband might not love them so much as I decided to extend the project to include a walkway in the side yard! read more

Owner is very rude and unpleasant to deal with. I walked into his business and he was just on the phone while his buddy was sitting in a chair behind the counter. Nobody bothered to acknowledge me when I walked in and just sat there for 3-4 minutes waiting to be helped. I had to wait for his employee to walk in from the back of the yard to finally be helped. I asked if they had a certain type of rock and the owner then gets involved and tells me I shouldn't get that rock cause its to expensive. Little does this rude owner know I make close to $300k per year. I went to Penninsula building materials on Brisa st in Livermore and was treated with respect and dignity. Recently had some dirt delivered from Cochran on 5/07 the driver accidentally pulled down the telephone line with the bed of the dump truck there was a bracket on top of my house which the phone line was attached to it ended up smashing into my 2003 toyota highlander no biggie stuff happens. Problem is when I presented the owner with the estimate for repairs he wanted more estimates I then said I have chosen where I want to take it no matter how many estimates I present you with this is where I want to take it. He said no! If the other is less then no you cant use this one. I wasn't trying to get him for rental car or the repairs needed for the roof where the shingles were torn out and repair the holes from the bracket. So now I just put it to my insurance to handle it. What an asshole! I'm the customer its my choice where I want the car fixed period!!! read more

A rock from their truck hit my windshield on the freeway and caused a crack. When I called them they at first didn't call me back. Then when I called them agin they denied it, said their truck was empty and that I need to call my own insurance company. Total BS! The truck cannot be completely empty, all it takes is a tiny rock, and I saw it come from their truck. They refused to take responsibility and now I have to pay to get my windshield fixed. I can't say enough about this company or the staff that run it, from the owner to the yard guy, I have never been put off or disrespected. Kyle, the owner is probably one of the best people I've ever met in my life, his integrity and diplomacy and professionalism and honesty are completely and totally beyond reproach. I have done business with this award winning team for at least 20 years, I've watched this company lose money rather then raise their prices, even during the leanest of times. I've made mistakes and ordered the wrong materials, and they've switched it without surcharge and without giving me a hard time about it (even though it was my fault.) This is a company founded with the sole desire to serve its customers with dignity and respect.... and fair prices. I run a small business and although many other companies have tried to sway me with lower prices in an effort to gain my business, 95% of my business stays with Cochrans building materials for good reason. So this is my opportunity to publicly thank Kyle and his crew at Cochrans building materials for serving me and my company and my clients with class for so many years. I love you guys.
