Most recently I came in April and finally pulled the trigger on a grandiflora white magnolia tree, Meyer lemon tree, & 2 really good size queen palms to complete our front & back yards. The staff is really nice & knowledgeable. They'll assist lifting the heavier & bigger trees to your vehicle with a forklift. They have a wide variety of plants, & trees to choose from. Golden Valley Nursery helped me assess a problem I was having with my tree in the front yard, they were kind enough to review pictures I sent and informed me of the infestation the tree had and gave me guidance on next steps. By this time, the damage from the pests had already been done and the tree was slowly dying. Sarah of Golden Valley Nursery gave me referrals for tree removal service, and quotes for different size tree replacements. Their pricing was well below other neighboring nurseries as well as online and the tree is beautiful/excellent quality. I appreciate the time given and expertise Golden Valley provided me with my tree issue. I have also visited the nursery to shop for items for my yard/garden and found their selection to be very nice and pricing was excellent. I had been waiting on spring to roll around to landscape and plant my yard, and the selection of plants available was super sparse here in March. I did my research ahead of time for suitable plants, but it was a real hunt trying to find the plants I was looking for (and they did not have the quantity I needed when if I found them), and there were no placards or details anywhere detailing specific cultivars for height, spread, and best growing conditions. For a nursery, I honestly expected better selection and quantity and I have to admit I was disappointed. Sadly I had better luck at Home Depot. read more

5 stars for the work crew that came to my home to replant my front yard,.. 3 stars for the job site foreman that lacked attention to detail and a miscommunication that cost me $100... 1 star for a business owner with no social graces and an inability to respond to emails... The average of the aforementioned ratings, for those of you like myself who are mathematically inclined, is 3. I'm rounding down a star, because I've had a martini. If you need quality landscaping work done there are likely worse choices in Tracy. I'm fairly happy with the end result, and that is all that matters. UPDATE: I just paid JW Fraga $175 to come out and redo the irrigation GVN installed. Apparently, they didn't include flow nozzles on my drip lines, so the plants weren't receiving adequate water. I have been back to Golden Valley nursery several times in the last few years. A couple of times they simply didn't have the plants in stock that I was looking for. I prefer to patronize independent nurseries rather than large chains as, generally, I have found that wholesale sources used by independent nurseries tend to be more local and offer higher quality stock. Also, the independent nurseries care for the plants prior to sale much more reliably than do big box hardware store employees. An example of Golden Valley's limited stock was my search last year for a weeping decorative maple tree. Weeping maple trees are not a rare product. However, when I went by Golden Valley they only had a few large, commercial-sized upright maples in stock. I ended up finding a red dragon lace leaf weeping maple at Home Depot instead. Just a couple of weeks ago, I needed a bare root fuji apple. After checking the stock and prices at several other locations, I decided to check out Golden Valley. The person working the nursery that day was not too sure of what varieties were in stock so we out into the yard to look together. It was only the second week in February but, to my surprise, Golden Valley had no bare root trees available. They had already potted their entire stock. The nursery's bare root trees are not inexpensive at $29 but, potted, the very same trees increase to $49. I explained that I wasn't going to pay $49 for a standard fruit tree and I would have to continue my search. The clerk said, "Could you wait a minute? We just potted these a couple of days ago. Let me talk to the owner." He was back minutes later. "The owner said that we can pull one of the trees out of the pot and you can buy it at bare root price. It won't cause any root damage because they've not had time to set any roots and they're still quite dorment," he said. That seemed quite reasonable so we looked at the stock. There were a half dozen trees to choose from and all were unusually large, well-branched, healthy-looking specimens. These were, by far, the best trees I'd seen. I picked a tree and the clerk & I got it back to the office, pulled the tree from the pot and bagged it in a black plastic garbage bag he had behind the counter. I was very pleased with the quality of the tree and the flexibility exhibited by Golden Valley Nursery in addressing my needs and preferences. I could have gotten a fuji apple at three or four other locations in Tracy and at lower prices. However, by patronizing Golden Valley, I got a better quality tree that I have no doubt will be an early producer of fruit and provide years of enjoyment to our family. Next time, I'll go to Golden Valley Nursery first. read more

Very friendly staff, great quality, huge variety of healthy quality plants in all categories. They have a huge selection of tall fruit trees. I called them today to consult regarding a lemon tree I recently planted, Sarah picked up the phone, she had a customer in the shop but she was very patient and helpful in guiding me how much water is enough. She also gave me advice on what kind of fruit tree will be suitable for the shadowy corner in my back yard. Looking forward to do more business with Golden Valley. read more

I decided to give them a try and I must say, it's been the best decision. Though I do love HD for my little DIY projects, Golden Valley is my new to go to place for my landscaping needs. First of all, you MUST ask for Kayla, she is extremely knowledgeable of everything they carry in the nursery. She was also very patient and asked several questions to help narrow down the selection to the perfect tree for my small backyard. Did I mention she was patient? Well I must emphasize that since I made her walk with me all over the nursery until I found what I was looking for. Bought a lemon tree from Golden Valley four years ago. After 6-7 months of no growth I went to see them to see what I was doing wrong...because when I called they blew me off. After a discussion it appeared I was doing everything correct. After a year still no growth, and no lemons, I went there again and asked them to replace the tree - they said it's been too long. The price of this tree ate-up most of a $100. Last summer I still had no lemons so went to Costco and for $35 bought another lemon tree. I planted it five feet away from this one. The Costco tree is now twice the size and producing - time to dig-up the Golden Valley piece of crap and throw it away read more

In 2014 we purchased a peach tree and lemon tree. We walked the trees and found what we wanted - both with fruit. The peach tree has been loaded each year with large, sweet, fruit. So much that our neighbors and daughter have plenty for about a 4 week period each summer. When I say loaded, I mean I had to tie the branches to keep them from breaking!! The lemon tree also loaded. Had lemons all winter. Great lemon aide and neighbors and daughter also make out. Only negative is the no return policy. We took that in consideration when we purchased the trees, but was uneasy about it. Almost went elsewhere but since both had fruit, figured worth a shot. As noted, paid off. Perhaps they should consider offering an insurance type plan for 1 year for an extra $5 or so. Noted comments concerning the no return policy and this might help off-set those negative comments. read more

I came in with a specific tree in mind, though thanks to the expertise and input from the staff at Golden Valley I left with two completely different beautiful plants. The prices on smaller plants were comparable to those of Home Depot, and the prices for trees were very reasonable. I plan to return for additional purchases even though it's a 45 minute drive. Nice place. I wasn't hassled by anyone, then when I needed help I when over to the office and was greeted by a nice young lady. I was interested in a Japanese Maple. Another gentleman that works here seemed to know a bit about Japanese Maples. Since I own a car, they had to deliver it. Delivery wasn't bad and one of the staff members made the time to stop what he was doing to deliver the Maple and follow me to my house. I didn't ask for immediate delivery but that was nice of them. I am very unhappy with the plants that I recently purchased from golden valley nursery. I purchased 6 pants on 6-15-16 by 6-18 five of the 6 looks like they are already dying.. The plants were watered along with other plants. As a matter of fact I had already purchased several other plants 2 1/2 weeks prior at lowes and Home Depot. They are all still in the containers waiting for my landscaping to be completed. The plants that I purchased 21/2 weeks prior to the ones I purchased from golden valley are doing great. Today I spoke with the manager at golden valley and informed him the condition of the plants and said that I would like to return, I also mentioned the plants condition on the plants that I have had much longer. I was told that they do not take returns. They do not have any warranty on plants. I mentioned how lowes and Home Depot have a return policy. His answer was we are a nursery not a Home Depot or lowes. With this said wouldn't you think that a nursery would have better quality plants. Not in this case !! We bought bushes that were still very small - 1 gallon each - and now, three years later, not only they all made it through our very tough summers in the valley, but the smallest is already about 6 ft. tall!! We didn't lose a single one of them. They also have great flower plants and small/medium trees. The lady who helped us was extremely helpful and sold us plants that suited our needs perfectly. I was lucky enough to get one of the owners because I got outstanding service! He selected plants for my flower boxes all the way to hedges and trees. Since my place is Tudor style, he wanted everything to be symmetrical and English. He even told me what type and color of flower urns to purchase (elsewhere) so he could plant a certain type of English fern in it. Everything was low-water and low maintenance...which is what I wanted. I was so afraid I'd be stuck with cactus or rocks but he drew out a plan for a perfectly lush English garden and shady front yard with flowers and charm. He told me to come back when I could afford it and will even have his people plant everything...including the window boxes and flowers. As a single woman and first time homeowner...I really appreciate this! They are also going to see what is wrong with my lawn when they come over...I suspect it needs some kind of food. All of the books and Internet sites put together didn't come close to what one stop here provided me...I felt a load had been lifted! I now have a plan, it won't cost nearly what I thought, I can do it in stages, and others will do the work! I'm happy!!! read more
