This review is a few months overdue, but I wanted to make sure I shared my experience. We purchased our pavers from Peninsula Building Materials for my project and I had a very positive experience working with Kevin Castner and the entire PBM team throughout the entire process. I originally had my pool deck installed back in 2009 and I wanted to match for my current project. Kevin helped coordinate a special-order request by working with the manufacturer's representative to especial order the exact product. After about two months, the pavers arrived and were delivered. However, I noticed right away that the quality was not the same as my original pavers. Since it was a large order, I was very stressed and immediately contacted Kevin to see what could be done. Kevin quickly arranged for a sales representative to come to my home and inspect the pavers. After reviewing them, the representative explained that the manufacturing materials had changed compared to the original product. As an end user, I would not have known this difference or how it might affect the final result. Unfortunately, the return request was initially denied. Kevin didn't stop there--he escalated the issue to higher management on my behalf. Within just a few days, the return was approved. He then helped me quickly reorder a different paver option so my contractors could continue the project without delay. Throughout the entire process, Kevin was extremely responsive, patient, and supportive. In addition, when I visited their showroom, I purchased some natural stone pieces on clearance for my patio steps. After the installation was partially done, I realized the color did not match my patio as expected, and Kevin kindly accepted the return without any hassle. Overall, Kevin was incredibly kind and helpful, and the rest of the Peninsula Building Materials team was also very professional and supportive. Their pricing was also unbeatable for the quality and service provided. I highly recommend them for excellent customer service and their willingness to go the extra mile. PBM is our go-to stone provider in Northern California. The prices are unbeatable, the selection quality unmatched, yet it's the customer service that stands out. We live near Walnut Creek and consistently make the trek to their yard because they're simply the best. Kevin is always willing to text, email or chat on the phone to discuss various options and estimates. We used them for our custom fireplace hearth (photo attached) after calling around the entire Bay Area trying to find a beautiful single slab. Went to PBM a couple of weeks for the last part of our yard project. We needed a top stone for our retaining wall and I didn't like the options our contractor showed us. The local place we were referred to didn't have many options so our contractor told me about PBM. I was extremely impressed from the minute I walked in the door. Kevin greeted me right away, listened to my concern, helped me look up multiple options and never once made me feel rushed. Jaimee met me outside and showed me the list of options Kevin wrote down for me. I didn't feel rushed during this process either. I'm happy to say I was able to make a decision that day, order and have it delivered all in the same day too. PBM had more options and great customer service! A big show stopper with this place is the fact that if you want to buy pavers, travertine, stone tiles etc. you can only pick pieces from the open pallet. Issue is the open pallet typically has all the chipped/cracked and stuck together/repaired left overs left behind by other customers who picked before you. So even if the pallet has mostly chipped/cracked left overs they'd not open a new pallet for you. If you request they'd flat out say 'NO'. I can understand they are also trying sell their defective material also but insisting that you can't pick what you want even after paying full price was a show stopper for me. Another issue is, colors vary from pallet to pallet so if you need all the material from a single pallet you can't have it, you must buy and finish all the left overs from an open pallet before they'd open a new pallet for you which proved to be a significant issue for the project I was working where I needed uniform material. Also beware that they don't take returns. read more

This place is awesome! They had a large selection of boulders that was really unique and Manager Kevin was very helpful. The price he got us was very reasonable and the delivery driver could not have been nicer. He spent a great deal of time being patience and unloading our boulders. The driver was the nicest guy ever. I've been living in Livermore for over 25 years and used various outdoor rock and bark suppliers in the area and this place is tops. I have no idea when they opened but when I was looking for some large bolders recently my landscape gardener recommended this business. As I wandered around the yard I actually had several employees stop what they were doing and ask if I needed any help. One man working on a forklift drove over to me and then used his walkie-talkie to get prices from the office staff. This yard is super clean and you must check this place out!! read more

Excellent customer service all around! I went to PBM a few times just looking around and asking a bunch of questions for our yard renovation project. The staff was courteous and very knowledgeable about the different product options. It was a welcomed surprise after a not so welcoming and helpful experience at Site One in Dublin. We ended up connecting with Kevin who has been amazing! He explained what they had in stock, what was available to order, offered recommendations and things to consider. After meeting the manager Bob, its clear they have established a culture of wanting to make the customer happy. When a second project came up, it was the first place I thought of and they again exceeded my expectations. These folks are awesome. I did business with another place a few miles north of my house in Walnut Creek. Their deal was go outside and find something and I will ring it up. I bought from this place several times and thought that was the standard in this industry. When I went to Peninsula I expected the same things...Man was I in for a surprise. Quarantining at home so decided to make something out of the dirt in my backyard. Called PBM and Kevin recommended a top soil mix to lay down and had a truck out the next day to deliver. My grass is growing from the seeds I put down, so I want to visit in person to decided on bark or stone for surrounding areas. Kevin again was super helpful and gave great recommendations. After visiting some extremely mediocre rock yards in the Dublin/Pleasanton area and Hayward, we discovered PBM. The Livermore yard is something like 10 acres, and is chock full of gorgeous flagstone, pavers, crushed rock, sand, mulch and an amazing assortment of stone. Whether you are a professional waller or mason, or if you're just landscaping your own backyard, I don't think you'll be disappointed if you come here. What's more, the staff here were friendly and helpful, from the sales staff to their delivery guys. (ask for Hector in the office! he put up with all my dorky questions with admirable patience.) Some of the guys at the other smaller rock yards just treated me like I was wasting their time. Well, it will be interesting to see how long they last with crappy service and fewer options when there's this new PBM in the neighborhood. read more

The guys were great! But some guy complained we didn't have a mask on outside by ourselves in the yard ! That is ridiculous it is 88 degrees and those poor guys are made to wear a mask from some crazy overbearing guy! Not a healthy situation for the crew working there! read more

These guys are the best! I had a tricky project, trying to match existing stone at my house for a column facing project. I'd checked other yards in the area without much luck, but Kevin at PBM showed me how my existing stone was a combination of a number of different stones they had in stock. They let me pick and choose among the open pallets, which two other rock yards would not let me do. The project turned out absolutely perfectly, and I didn't have to order multiple pallets to get the right rock. The yard and office are both immaculate - the paved surface of the rock yard is a bonus when you're walking among the acres of beautiful stone. The staff in the yard are incredibly helpful, and treated this homeowner like I was in the trades. The kicker? PBM was about 20% cheaper than other yards for a comparable product. I've gone back a couple times since, and Kevin and the rest of the team are genuinely eager to walk me through my options and be as supportive as they can. It's an hour or so drive for me to get to PBM, but I will never be using another yard in the East Bay...these guys are just too good! read more

I was looking for a pallet of "bull river" ledge stone to extend a wall I put in 4 years ago. The yard we bought it from originally wasn't able, nor very interested in, helping me hunt it down.
