I had a very nice portion of veggie samosas which were cooked perfectly. Crispy on the outside, not fatty at all and the spices inside made them the best Ive had so far. The curry, although as spicy advertised, it wasn't spicy at all but it tasted really well. The portion could have been bigger for the price, but I stick to the good taste. The wine wasn't great, but I wouldn't count it as part of the Indian experience here. Overall, good...

In 30+ years of living in/near Lower Mainland, I'd never gone to Sitar. I did tonight. OMG literally best Indian meal we've EVER had (and my wife has eaten IN INDIA! :) ) and in the top 5 best meals I've ever had with samosas to die for!

My favourite resto for Indian food, ambiance & location. Something about gastown. Butter chicken & garlic naan bread is outstanding. Lots of garlic. Rich in flavour. The tandoori chicken is good too, lots of veggies pan fried on a stone. and serve w/ a huge, round thin 'cracker' in lieu of bread at the beginning.

I don't eat Indian food too often ( in Vancouver I only been to Vijjs and Judges). For some reason I was craving a hearty meal with some vegetable options ... and some naan! The garlic naan here was delicious. We also had the buttered chicken and vegetable curry. The restaurant staff is very kind and attentive and that was a huge plus. We sat right next to the window and it was enjoyable to people watch in gastown ( even on a rainy night , there's lots of characters). The flavors are not very strong which I like, and my favorite thing was the kulfi to finish . It's a dessert with pistachio flavor , so refreshing and delightful. There was music playing , lots of sitar =). I recommend this nice restaurant for Indian in a fun part of gastown!

Paneer Tikka Masala....liked it. Naan...liked it. Sweet Lassi... Loved it, fortunately wasn't very sweet, enough to enjoy. Good restaurant, good environment.

Brutal service. I've been to Sitar in the past (and always with just one other person) and really thought they had some decent Indian cuisine. It's nothing spectacular, but there are some good dishes. Unfortunately, these guys can not handle large groups (ours was a group of 10). Not only did it take over an hour after ordering to get our dishes, but when they arrived, half of them were luke warm! We also wanted our dishes spicy and it was borderline mild at best. Chicken wings, burnt and dry, roti, stiff and pretty much inedible. I was also not impressed at how difficult it was for them to split our bill and they tried numerous times to convince us to get our bill done on one. In the end they were magically able to do it for us. Was their initial reaction out of pure laziness? Overall the servers (one was possibly the owner or head waiter) that were handling our table seemed extremely put off that 10 hungry patrons actually wanted to eat and pay for their food at their fine establishment...

Tandoori Dinner($23.95): Tandoori chicken, lamb tikka, chicken tikka, tandoori prawns, seekh kabab, fish tandoori

Likes: location, ambiance, butter chicken, service Dislikes: tandoori platter, value Background: Went here on a Saturday night with my boyfriend at around 9:30 p.m. in April 2013 to celebrate the Times of India Film Awards (TOIFA). It was a wet evening in Vancouver, but as always, it doesn't stop Vancouverites from prancing around the streets of Gastown. Ambiance: First of all, the location is very accessible for all commuters. It was right at the heart of Gastown, guarded by Gassy Jack himself. The restaurant is a mid-size restaurant that could sit around 50 people. The atmosphere is quite romantic, overlooking the streets of Gastown. At the particular night that we arrived, we were the only diners in the restaurant -- quite odd for a Saturday night, but at the same time the rush of Indian food cravers had apparently just left, perhaps for a bar or coffee. Food: We ordered (1) butter chicken for me and (2) a tandoori platter for my boyfriend. Both meals came with Basmati rice and naan. We also ordered lassi - plain and mango. How can you really go wrong with butter chicken? It was creamy as I liked it served, not too spicy, yet the chicken portions were not very large. They were smaller cubes of chicken that what I'd usually get from other restaurants. The plate portion was quite small as well, as I would've expected -- it was half a plate. It was around $17. Yet, I savoured every bite of my favourite Indian dish so I was pretty much in butter chicken paradise. The tandoori platter, however was very bland, according to my boyfriend. Apparently he had asked for a "hot" platter, but it might as well have been mild. The platter was made up of: Tandoori chicken, lamb tikka, chicken tikka, tandoori prawns, seekh kabab, fish tandoori, naan, rice pillau, papad and chutney. Sounds like a lot, but the portion was not satisfying, especially when you are paying $24 for it. The lassis were divine. Service: The server was very polite, friendly and accommodating. Although we were the only diners in the restaurant, we didn't feel rushed to leave. The servers look photos of us (as I always request for those!) and they did it without a frown. They even played Bollywood music for me, when they found out that I was there to "celebrate" TOIFA! Value: We ended up spending $50+. There are definitely better Indian restaurants in town, but I understand that the location of this restaurant contributed to the price. The portion, however, could be bigger. Verdict: I recommend this restaurant for date night. I see that it's a better location at night than for lunchtime. I would consider returning if I'm around town.

Sitar dinner. The right side of the orange gravy is butter chicken.

I made reservations for us for 4pm, so as to take advantage of their Happy Hour. We went earlier today (a Wednesday) and the place was empty at 4pm. I think it fills up later, for dinner. (I still advise making reservations as you never really know if it's going to be busy). Right off the bat, we were blown away by the interior. It is gorgeous! Small, but gorgeous. The murals, the chandeliers, the bar....and omg, the bathrooms. If you visit, you MUST check out the bathrooms. They have the most fabulous sinks I have ever seen. They didn't have a large selection of HH offerings, unfortunately, but what they did have was amazingly good. My friends who were extremely knowledgeable on Indian cuisine ordered for us, and we shared 3 different small plates (tandoori vegetable momos, cochin cauliflower bites, and some sort of delicious fried onions), and 2 desserts (soan paid malai khwaab, and foxtail millet pudding). And just...wow, everything was SO SO good. The three appetizers were so flavorful and the desserts, unlike anything I've ever had before and simply delicious. We also had drinks (but, of course!). One friend had a mango lassi which she loved, one friend had a high ball which she loved, and I had a mango mojito which I loved. (See a pattern? lol). All was great. Our server, Leesa (not sure of spelling) was so incredibly personable and lovely, and a gentleman I gather is the owner came by twice to make sure everything was okay. We felt like VIPs, with all the care and attention we got. Seriously, the folks here could not be nicer. I'm already planning on bringing my two daughters here. I know they'll love this place. Heck, anyone would love this place. My friends and I all plan on returning. Great great place!

We came around 4pm and had a couple of drinks from the regular menu plus the Kerala pepper chicken the momos and the veggie fritters. Again, the food is very good and the prices were reasonable. I will have to come back late night to see if the happy hour issue is rectified at that time as I see the menu is still the exact same as before. ********* Came here after hearing about the recent celebrity visit. First of all, the food is very good the portions are also decent and the prices are reasonable. I would have liked to have come back here for the lunch special as it's walking distance for me, but my visit left a bad taste in my mouth, which I will detail below. The dishes are inventive. There are the usual suspects, but also some that aren't often see at most Indian restaurants in Metro Van. The staff is also very attentive and friendly. The cocktails are pricey, but interesting. The decor is trendy. The bathrooms have an interesting sink feature that I have not seen before. If you're into social media, there's definitely some photo opportunities here. The service is a bit weird as there isn't really a dedicated server for the table. So, basically, we had all sorts of different people taking our drink and food orders, bringing us food, refilling our water and checking in on us. On the plus, it means that you are checked on a lot. On the minus, it is a bit inconsistent because there isn't one single person who knows what is going on with the table, but more a revolving door. For instance, one staff member came and took our drink order, however the wrong drink ended up being made and brought to me by the bartender, even though the drinks had been extensively discussed with the original server. So there's definitely communication issues. My biggest gripe with this restaurant is that we were denied ordering from the happy hour menu by the manager. I did not want to argue about it at the time as the bartender was told in front of us to deny us the happy hour menu, from which we wanted to order some cocktails. At this point, we had already ordered several menu items (in fact so many that the server had advised us we had more than enough food and that we did not need to order an additional dish we were considering) plus full priced cocktails. So it's not like they weren't making money off our table. The reason we were given, which I believe was told to the bartender (to be clear, I do not believe the bartender was at fault, but simply the messenger in this situation), was that the happy hour was only a summer thing. Again, we visually saw the manager instruct the bartender to tell us these things -- they were literally standing in front of our table, less than 5 feet away. This was not only unprofessional, but I found it incredibly dishonest. It was mid-December when we were at the restaurant, 3.5 months after summer had ended. The happy hour menu is literally the first page in the menu book. If a restaurant doesn't want to honour their own happy hour menu, it costs very little to simply reprint the happy hour menu, remove that page completely, or cross it out, if they really want to be cheap. At minimum, they should have honoured the menu for patrons that they gave it to and then rectified the situation for future. For this reason, I cannot recommend this establishment even though the food was very good and I would have otherwise come back and supported this small business.

We got the look as if we were sure we were in the right place not in a bad way but as if we were sure that was what we wanted. Every time we have visited there was no wait to get seated in fact the place is almost empty. Just a few people at a time. They are very friendly and feels like family vibes and I love that. Food comes out pretty quick and you can always get a drink to keep you comfortable. I got a glass of Malbec my favorite. Garlic naan and rice... we were full! End of the meal my man tells us they just finished making dessert and brought us some great bread pudding. Unexpected but they did not charge us for it and seemed very gracious for us dropping in. I would also love to see more businesses like this! I hope they thrive in 2026 and continue to do so.
