I'm extremely disappointed by what happened at Sippin Silo. The way a group of Black women were treated, including having the police called on them over a seating issue, was unacceptable and left the situation feeling deeply rooted in racial discrimination. If seating is an issue, there are much better ways to handle it. A simple and consistent seating policy should apply to everyone. If certain tables are reserved, the staff should clearly communicate that to all guests--not leave open tables available while specifically directing Black women to sit at the bar. That creates a very different experience and understandably raises serious concerns about unequal treatment. There was an opportunity to de-escalate this situation with basic customer service: explain the seating policy, offer available alternatives, and treat the guests with the same courtesy that would be expected of any other group. Calling the police should never be the first response to a manageable seating disagreement. I hope Sippin Silo takes this situation seriously, reviews how seating policies are communicated and enforced, and provides staff with better training on fair treatment, implicit bias, and de-escalation. A business should be a place where everyone feels welcome--not a place where Black customers feel singled out or treated as a problem. This could have been handled very differently, and I hope the business chooses to learn from it. read more

I am absolutely perturbed and disgusted by the way this situation was handled at Sippin Silo. A group gathered at this establishment simply to celebrate someone's birthday. Upon arriving, the group was not seated together, and there was apparently a lack of communication regarding the seating arrangements. When members of the group questioned the customer service and tried to understand why they had not been informed or accommodated together, instead of management communicating professionally and attempting to resolve the issue, the situation was unnecessarily escalated. The group was told to leave, and the police were called. What began as customers asking reasonable questions about their experience turned into an incredibly hostile and humiliating situation. Police officers arrived and, rather than helping de-escalate matters, were aggressive toward members of the group and threatened them with handcuffs. The entire encounter was disturbing. The level of aggression and escalation did not seem remotely proportionate to what had occurred. These were people who came together to celebrate a birthday--not people who came looking for confrontation or trouble. The way this group was treated also raises very serious concerns for me about racial discrimination. Watching a customer-service concern escalate to this level, with a group being removed and police being called simply after questioning how they were being treated, left me feeling that they were being viewed and treated as a threat rather than as paying customers deserving of basic respect. I do not use the word racism lightly. But when people of color feel they are being treated more aggressively, viewed as threatening, or subjected to an unnecessarily heightened response for advocating for themselves, that deserves to be called out and examined. There were so many opportunities for Sippin Silo to communicate, listen, and de-escalate this situation. Instead, they chose escalation. I am disgusted by the way this was handled, and I would strongly encourage management to reflect on how they treat customers--particularly customers of color--when concerns are raised. I am deeply disappointed and disturbed about what happened at Sippin Silo yesterday after a group of beautiful African American ladies were discriminate against and police were called because they were asking questions about seating policies. The responding officer was aggressive from the start and threatened to arrest the ladies for disturbance and not showing DL (which they were trying to do). The ladies were not aggressive or unruly. This could have been avoided if the manager of this establishment was professional. The staff gave us different information depending on who we asked, so by the end we weren't sure if we were ordering food or decoding a conspiracy. At one point, I also witnessed a staff member casually adjusting their uniform and then immediately going back to handling things without so much as a hand wash in sight. Another moment that will live rent-free in my memory forever: someone in the back very confidently acting like hygiene was just a suggestion, not a requirement. And the manager... oh, the manager. Wow! My experience here was absolutely awful. The drinks are over priced, the food looked good but tasted like it was store bought aka frozen and microwaved to serve.
