Wow! Amazing service from a handsome bartender! Ordered a water on the rocks and he got it ready asap! The staff is mysterious, yet elegant. The bouncers have anti gravity and teleportation powers as well. The bartender has an extra drink making hand protruding from his lower back, so he can make 3 drinks at once (not including his toes). Overall good experience, but this guy named Fischer Richie was slightly obnoxious. This establishment was beyond a delight, in fact, the bartender was so attentive, I'm 90% sure he was my guardian angel in disguise. I just want to say that the bartender who took my order was cool and good for business. Luckily I came in when the place wasn't busy. The reason I give this review two stars is mainly because of the food. When I took a bite of the first mozzarella sticks I was just disappointed. The cheese wasn't gooey enough, and I know I could have gone to the freezer section of the store get some mozzarella sticks and make it better than they did, also the Mariana sauce that came with the mozzarella sticks was too cold. I also ate the pepperoni pizza melt which was ok, but sadly nothing too special. The fries was the only thing that was good especially with the seasoning that was on it. Went here last night to play pool and get drinks with friends last night. The bartender (tall, blonde female with glasses) asked for my ID, I handed it over. She checked it front and back and rolled her eyes and tossed it back to me. Later on my friend tried to get a drink and she claimed that my ID was "fake" and was incredibly rude to me. I am 21 and it is my legal ID, I just had a birthday. It was a Mississippi ID, as I am a resident of MS. The rudeness and accusing me of lying was completely unwarranted and I felt really uncomfortable. I did nothing wrong to be treated like that. read more

while this was one of my favorite spots to drink I recently notice that someone has been adding tips to my drink totals after I leave the bar. and this is not a one time thing I have receipts from multiple nights out where a tip was added when I didn't tip and some of them were changed to a different total. Watch your receipts people!!!! The new Newby's launched their brunch menu today! They even have chicken tenders embedded into their chicken and waffles! What? On top of the sliding glass garage doors that now open the entire dining room area onto a front-facing patio and the Highland strip, and more parking found behind the restaurant where the back patio used to be (I heart the new layout), the menu is awesome! The Sunday brunch menu offerings include The Tubby Smith breakfast burger (he's the Tigers coach) and the Rudd Breakfast Pizza (he's the president of the University of Memphis)! Everything is really reasonably priced too! I am also excited about the service here! With this being the soft opening for Sunday brunch, a member of the chef's staff came out to check on everyone. Kewl! I'm also told Elfo Grisanti is the head chef! He's a member of Memphis' most famous Italian restaurant family. They also have a huge TV screen on the back wall to enjoy the game, a pool table, darts, a stage, and daily specials. The transformation of the Highland strip, including the new fine dining restaurant Char, has brought me here more than I've been to the U of M area in nearly a decade. I am so excited to watch the revival of the university area, a place where I know I want to visit more frequently. YES! This is the area to watch! read more

I've been waiting to post a review after I have had the opportunity to go a few times and try many menu items! 5 star all around! Love the location and upgrade, it is a huge benefit to the university area. The inside is nice, clean, and perfect for lunch or late night hangout. Service has always been great and helpful! So far I have tried the 'Tubby Smith burger', 'Triple bypass burger', 'build your own pizza', '1 pound order of bone in wings (golden honey sauce) and the buffalo chicken salad! All of them have been great portions, excellent taste and exceeded my expectations. My friend asked the bartender for dry wings and they brought out wet spicy wings. She asked for an exchange and the owner's daughter refused to help her. She was extremely unprofessional and unhelpful. After asking the worker that placed the order order, he also refused to help and continued to argue and tell me and my friend to tell us to "get the fu#* out". After paying the tab, he followed us outside to insult my friend and I calling her "white trash" and threatning to fight us. Update: Police was called and the worker apologized. Went to the newly reopened Newby's for lunch recently. I was a little nervous to see what they had done with the place because I have many great late night memories of the original. I was pleasantly surprised, though I think I will miss the pool room. The menu is simple bar food. We tried the loaded tots as an appetizer and got one of the pizzas to split for our entrée. I can't wait to go back and try the chicken sandwich and the F&J. Of course, I had to try one of the bottom up beers. It was very cool and not foamy at all. I can see the appeal of the system. Lots of flat screen TVs mounted and a futuristic looking wall mounted jukebox that I was told is also a photo booth. We didn't try that out, but thoroughly enjoyed the newly remodeled space. The bathrooms were clean and totally new - probably my favorite change. They also have a great parking lot in the back with a back entrance. For those, like me who remember the original, I encourage you to go check it out. For those who never went, you should definitely go. read more

I've been going to Newby's for more than 15 years, so giving it less than 5 stars just seems wrong. An institution on the Highland strip, Newby's is a favorite with U of M students, neighborhood regulars, and live music fans. The place is huge, with a regular bar area complete with dining tables, a large pool room, and a gigantic room with stage for live music. I've frequented them all. The food is pretty good for bar food. I love their cheese fries- a big plate of crispy fries topped with tons of melted cheese and sour cream. Good times. When I was in college, Newby's was the place to be during the holidays, as old friends came back to town to celebrate the holidays with their families, stopping in at Newby's after hours. Super T plays every Thanksgiving (at least I think he still does) and always draws a huge crowd. I don't go as much as I used to, but I'll pop in occasionally to see a great live band. Wife & I Went to the soft opening for brunch at this newly owned & renovated spot. It was totally different from when we were going to the U of M. Kinda like a trip down memory lane for us as we dined lol. One of the owners took the time to walk around and introduce herself to those dining, which I thought was very nice. That gained a ton of points from me as I much rather talk to & engage people than take the impersonal social media route. All in all the food had excellent taste. I'm a bit of a priss. I'll admit it. That's why people are always surprised I hang out at Newby's. Yes, it is a hole in the wall, and yes, it is not fancy. It doesn't have to be...because it is awesome! Plus that whole dive thing is part of its charm. Newby's has fantastic live music with reasonably priced drinks and just good, greasy bar food (not to mention pool, but that's not really my thing). Some nights they are jam-packed and other nights it is low-key. It doesn't matter. Both ways are great. As far as alcohol...I'm normally a champagne girl, which of course they don't have, so I had to venture out of my comfort zone. I typically don't drink liquor because I hate the taste, but what they make with flavored vodka tastes like grape juice and gummy bears. Delicious! read more

This is probably my favorite live music venue in Memphis. I've had some epic New Years in here and had some damn fine times on many other regular occasions as well. This is the first place I was introduced to the chilled Jägermeister tap machine. They have one side that is more of a bar/restaurant while the other side is a giant theater room for live music. This is a great dive that always seems to draw an energetic crowd and I've danced the night away on more occasions than I can count. read more

Oh, you can't help but like this restaurant/bar. I'm about 5 plus years out of college, but it makes me miss the 'old' days. It's kind of a rough and tumble place, with signage randomly placed around, the cushions a little worn, and a slight scent of 'let's drink away the exam panic', mixed with flirtation, and the excitement of youth and possibilty. So, basically I felt a *little* out of place, as most were early twenty-somethings, but no one gave me the side-eye. I watched a drunk student attempt to plug in the punch-out game for a good ten minutes. People were easy-going, and enjoying the relaxed hang-out vibe. The alcohol situation is basic, but decent, and prices are reasonable. I wandered a bit and saw a decent-sized outdoor patio with a few tables, and adorned with Christmas lights, and at the other end, walked into an area near a performance area featuring (for $5 cover) a decent-sounding rock band. read more

Newbys is a great bar on the Highland Strip. I absolutely love their happy hour- daily from 3-10pm you can get $2.50 drafts and $3 wells. We have only nibbles on fries, so I can't comment on food really, but their tenders my friend ate did look good. They typically have a band, which is cool, but the times we have been there I do wish the band wasn't so loud. The only big negatives are people smoking right at the door giving it a kinda run-down vibe, and the cover charge. read more

This is my favorite bar in the city. And I visit different bars often, but I always come back to Newbys. They have the cheapest drinks in the city. $2.50 beers and $3 well drinks. Really low key unless theyre having a big show or game. The food is amazing! Burgers, chicken tenders, wings, eggrolls, everything I've ever had there has been great and the staff is chill and friendly. Never seen them get upset with overly drunk people. I'm going to step away from the norm here and write something positive about Newbys. It is a grungy spot with a little bar, and standard bar food. You're at a spot in the university district, that is the entire area out there. So, plan your shows accordingly. If you want a polished place, go to one. They exist, but don't complain when you're also paying $15 a drink. That being said the staff over at Newbys actually gives a damn about the community, the owner Todd routinely donates the spot for fund-raisers, and benefits of various types. Depending on the engineer the sound is great, the drinks are affordable, parking isn't wonderful, but it isn't the worse in Memphis. I actually get excited going into Newbys. I dig the stage, I dig the lights and I have fun going here because it is just a grungy dive bar with a great stage...I don't expect it to become Cinderella and become alchemy with a stage. read more

This place is DISGUSTING! I'm not even sure where to start. Should it be the slopping concrete floor, the "ambiance" of darkness so you can't see exactly what is causing your shoes to stick to the floor, the bar is tiny, overpriced and dirty. Careful when you use the restroom, the doors don't close, the toilet I'm not sure has ever been cleaned and when you wash your hands the sink drains onto your shoes. The stage doesn't seem too bad, although I have never seen it up close. I refuse to pay $30 for "VIP" seating that should be somewhere around $5, at least for the shows I have seen. I would never recommend this place to anyone for anything but as long as Groupon keeps selling tickets I will keep attending, I have high hopes that "it'll be better this time". read more

I recently had the most fun night ever here at Newby's! Great drinks (try the Rockstar) and friendly bar tenders and WOW is this place HUGE! Great place for parties and events as it seems the rooms never end, plus they have a back patio with an outdoor bar. I hear they have bands perform here as well, which I can't wait to check out. We played foosball and they have pool tables so there is always something fun to keep you entertained. Though we decided to play charades and some man got extremely angry that we were being loud... We were nice about it and moved into another area of the bar (because it is a bar and people are expected to be loud!?!?...) and the manager couldn't have handled it better! He followed us to our new table and treated us to a round of drinks as an apology for the rude patron at the bar. How nice!! We will for sure be back! Thanks Newby's for an awesome night! read more

This place has recently had a decent make-over and their grand opening was a few weeks ago. I decided to check them out even though I wasn't a huge fan of the old Newby's. The interior decor looks a lot better. They fixed everything that used to make me cringe upon walking in before, and they have a new menu. The stage is still there which means there will be live music as before, but they took out all the pool tables in the adjacent room and added seating and TVs (including one huge one) which I thought was a great idea. It still has that old dive bar charm, definitely not a fancy or relaxing place. A couple of things I didn't like was how loud the TVs got in there, and the tables and chairs (uncomfortable metal ones that were not level, so they just keep wobbling as you are trying to eat). We tried 2 of their sandwiches and one of their pizzas. Their fries are absolutely delightful and would be one of the main reasons why I'd come back here! We were all very happy with our orders. Food was delicious but took a while to make. The servers are also new and so not too familiar with what's on the menu and with pricing and beers on tap. But I guess that is to be expected since they just opened up. All in all, we had a good experience and would definitely give it another try. read more

This place is absolutely disgusting. It smells like beer and butts as soon as you walk in. The floors are so sticky that my shoes literally stuck to the ground at times and I am going to burn my shoes later. Someone needs to introduce the staff to a mop and how to use it. We went in to try the new Newby's over the weekend. I can say the place is a lot cleaner the bathrooms are 110% better they actually look like a restroom! The food we had at the bar was mixed. I ordered the pizza and while not the worst ever I would probably not get again just tasted bland nothing special. Others in our group got the burger and fries and had nothing but good things to say about it...so will have to go back and try it. This place still has a younger college crowd but on a late night I would stop in again. The bartender's we had were great nothing but helpful and funny all night...oh!! and they have those fancy fill from the bottom glasses so you have your own personal Newby's magnet as a souvenir. In all this place is so much better I think they did a good job of freshening up the place and keeping some of the dive bar character. read more

I went to Newby's to listen to music. The music was great. However, I sat at the bar where the upholstery on the chairs was half gone. Then I attempted to use the bathroom whose condition was beyond disgusting. I recommend going there to hear great music but preparing by being certain that you do not need to use a restroom while there. read more

Stopped in for a while the other night. Massive upgrade on the bathrooms. I've had many girls tell me they wouldn't go to the old newbys just because of the horrible bathrooms. The place isn't too different overall. Opened up slightly, music venue on the side is no longer part of the place, only one pool table now and more seating on that side. Food was ok. Burger was hot and fresh. It was pretty good. Fires were battered and dusted with what I think was some sugar and ranch dressing powder. They were ok. The people working were very friendly and absolutely were hustling. It was a bit short staffed but they took care of everyone. I'm sure we will come back to watch a game, band, etc. It did loose some character in the remodel and seems a bit generic now and I wouldn't say it's a destination for the food. The pizza was kinda sad. Hopefully they will do well and the street can make a comeback! read more

If I could give this place a -10 I would, but only for the service. The food was actually pretty good, but the service was the most horrible service I've ever had at any restaurant I've ever eaten in. When we went, it was practically empty except for 4 of my other classmates. It still took the waitress FOREVER to get our drinks (which was water btw). Then the food, mind you there were only 4 other people there plus the group I was with (8 ppl in the ENTIRE PLACE), we waited at least 30 mins for 2 chicken tender plates and some spinach dip!! The chips that came with the spinach dip were stale, so my friend asked for more chips, the waitress took her plate back to the kitchen and the rest of us were done eating and in line to pay when the waitress brought her plate back. All she needed was chips!! This was totally appalling to me and I will never step foot in this place ever again. read more
