We got confirmation that our house is actually very tightly sealed, which explained some things we'd been experiencing. Bob was super responsive, clear in establishing expectations, reasonable in cost, and fun to work with. We are new homeowners of a 1940s 800 sq ft home that needs some modernization, and wanted some data and advice to start our planning. We had two long conversations during his visit that basically paid for it, and that was before receiving his thorough report and interesting images. We have subsequently shared his report with multiple contractors as we look to implement some changes, and they have all found it useful. Bob took the current COVID environment seriously and practiced all the appropriate protocols. He also engaged in a few follow up conversations after the report was delivered to clarify a few points. The only suggestion I would make is to be open to his suggestions, instead of asking his opinion on specific pre-conceived options. We came into it with a rough plan, and he readily adapted his report to our requests, but now we are reversing course and I think his input would have been valuable, earlier, if we had been more open to it. I can recommend Simplicity Home Energy for their responsiveness, a very thorough audit, and, lastly, a very useful written report that helps me figure out what needs to be done and in what sequence. I appreciate that they are truly independent auditors and are not part of a weatherization company, so that all recommendations are unbiased and fact-based. I also like the flat-fee pricing that is based on the square footage of the house, not an hourly rate. I was able to get my home energy audit scheduled within 2 weeks of my initial inquiry, although Bob sent another person who works with him, Zach, to do the audit. Zach was very knowledgeable and over an 8-hour period he explored nearly every corner of my very old house (built in 1906), to understand all aspects of its energy use, potential gaps and air leaks, and to identify areas for improvement. He also was very happy to answer all my questions along the way. The written report arrived by email a week later, complete with explanatory photos Zach took during the audit. They also provided links to several weatherization contractors they can recommend, although I will need to first find an electrician to first deal with the knob and tube wiring that is visible in the attic. The final endorsement of the audit report comes from an East Coast friend I shared the report with, since he is very knowledgeable about the home energy audit process, and he remarked: "It's a good one, full of actionable information. I like, and largely agree with the prioritization categories: (1) Health and safety; (2) Easy and affordable; (3) Bigger, essential jobs for comfort and savings; (4) Important large upgrades, but with a longer payback time. Hands down, having Bob conduct an energy audit of our home has been one of the best decisions we've made. First time was with the Seattle City Light Community Power Works program, which subsidized the evaluation of my old home for a total cost of $125. Great deal, and the improvements suggested more than paid for themselves. Second time was for a new (old 1906) house I purchased. The subsidy program is no longer available, but the $325 fee for the audit was still well worth it. My report is detailed, with a checklist of items I can either do myself or have a contractor do, and the pictures of issues are worth their weight in gold. Best $95.00 I ever spent; saved me thousands! Bob came at the recommendation of a gas company so that I could take advantage of any energy rebates. Much to the dismay of the gas company, he advised that I go with a ventless heating pump, saving me the cost of having gas installed and doing away with a furnace and duct work altogether, not to mention that my heating bills will be cut in half. I feel fortunate that I took the advice of other yelp reviewers and chose Bob to do an energy audit on my house. Our electricity bills have been outrageous lately and I had to do something. Bob is very knowledgeable and has an arsenal of equipment he brings in to measure all sorts of things I didn't even know could be measured. The audit took about 4 hours and aside from showing him the lay of the land for about 10 minutes, he worked independently. He immediately zeroed in on a few sources of energy sucks (a dehumidifier that is costing us at least $30/month to run, some very old lightbulbs that need to be updated- AND he left us a box of more efficient lightbulbs for free!). He evaluated our heating system and had extremely detailed suggestions for relatively straightforward solutions. He never tried to sell us anything at all. He used an infrared camera to identify areas of poor insulation. He also educated me on the importance of adequate airflow, as apparently our house does not recycle air frequently enough and this puts us at risk for mold and mildew. Simple solution: run the bathroom fans a bit more often. Totally reasonable (and free). So I know right off the bat that I'll be saving at least $30/month but probably more. This energy audit will have paid for itself in less than a year.
