Colleen helped me at Silver Moon and she was absolutely AMAZING. She did a great deal of custom work on my dress and made it 100% unique. Not only did she add elements to the dress but she was able to take my mother's 40 year old vail and tailor it to give it a more modern look that would work with my dress. She also took parts of the vail and beaded elements from a beaded belt she added to the dress, to create a hair piece to wear during the reception. In addition to their craft, the store itself has some incredible vintage outfits/dresses, shoes, purses and jewelry. I bought some additional pieces to go with the dress and I felt like my whole look was exactly what I was hoping for. read more

I originally enjoyed getting my dress altered at Silvermoon, but I had a few issues. I brought my own dress here to be reconstructed. The process was fine until the final day. I ended up a week before my wedding with my dress finally, but it wasn't what I had expected. I paid in full at the beginning and had an extra add on for pads around $300 during the fitting process. So I made 2 payments to them. I did have an appointment 2ish weeks prior to my last appointment and had to cancel it before cause of a family member dying another being sick. I would have been fine driving back for another fitting week of the wedding, but I was worried it wouldn't have been done fully since I was a week out. Therefore they said the dress would be fine at the last fitting so I took it and wore it the next week at the wedding. Sadly right before my wedding ceremony I couldn't get my removable straps to stay on. They were done very quickly at my last fitting despite me paying for them in advance as stated. I had to have them pinned on by my family and as I walked down the aisle I had to stop mid aisle and put them back on since they popped off. I now sadly have marks from the pins we put in my dress to keep the straps on. During the cocktail hour I noticed my boning coming out and the beads scratching me. I kept trying to fix the boning all night, but it wouldn't fix. Even with taping the boning it still came out. Thankfully we didn't have dancing at all (only one couples dance) and no dance floor. So I was able to stay seated at the table most of the night and try to not get more scratches. I also covered the boning with my hair. I've attached photos. I tried to dispute it for partial refund from my credit card company but let it go. I haven't had time to take the dress into somewhere else to be fixed, but I can update with the price I'm given later to fix the issues. This is a dress I wanted to pass down. The photos are of the dress not fitting to my body fully, the boning coming out, and the beads falling off (shows one area but it was all over the dress). I recommend them for buying a dress (even though I brought my own). But I don't know now if I'd recommend them for alterations. I didn't have much of a choice so I took the dress my last appointment and didn't realize until my wedding day it was falling apart. They have beautiful dresses there, but I'd be hesitant doing a bigger job there due to this sadly. I'd rate them 2-3 stars. read more

I had a great experience with getting my BHLDN dress altered here. My dress had lots of tulle and was made for someone really tall, but they were able to make it work and suit my small frame. The process was easy. I had 3 fittings that were spaced out starting in early March. Colleen and Liz were nice and easy to work with. The best wedding dress shopping experience ever! I went in looking for a vintage dress that wasn't necessarily a "wedding dress" (which meant I didn't have to book an appointment) and within an hour I had tried on a few dresses and found the perfect dress (a 1960s vintage linen dress for only $99!!) and also had it pinned for a few alterations! Doesn't get easier than that! I came back a couple of weeks later to check the fitting and at the same time we talked about a custom veil which they designed then and there. A sash was also suggested which I originally didn't think I needed, but once we put one on it really lifted the outfit (of course, these guys are professionals they know what they're doing haha). One final fitting of the dress a week later, tried on the fitted sash and new custom veil and the outfit was perfect! Thank you Silver Moon! read more

I am sad to have to write this review, but would hate for other brides to have the stress I did on my wedding day about something that should be one of the best parts of the wedding (getting a perfect dress!). The ladies here were lovely and the actual dress was altered correctly, however for my final pickup I tried on the dress, everything seemed great but we did not bustle it completely. I trusted that when they said they fixed the bustle buttons that were previously sewn on incorrectly, that they did. I left that day with my dress and it was not touched until I took it out of the bag to put it on. First issue was that the belt was supposed to be a hook and eye closure and the eye was just straight up not there. Safety pins for the win. This set us back 30 minutes for our first look since I had to take the dress off after putting it on and figure out how to secure it with safety pins, put back on, etc! Ugh. Second issue was that there were a few button issues with the bustle, there were at least 2 snaps missing on one side (how?!) you could see where it had been previously sewn on, but obviously not secured. So sad but I guess glad that this was the biggest issue of the wedding day! read more

I had a very difficult time with alterations here. This shop was recommended by BHLDN, where I got my dress, but I would recommend BHLDN brides go elsewhere. At my first appointment, we talked through the hem and bustle, and they recommended bringing in the bust. When I came back for my fitting, the hem was beautiful, and the bustle worked well (although it was 5 points, not the 3 points we discussed). However, the seams at the bust were pulling and puckering - it looked like it had been taken in but not sewn back straight. I ended coming in a total of seven times to try and fix the bust. At one point, they cut the boning to different lengths on the left and right side, so I had a cone bra shape on my left and a rounded shape on my right. Things we discussed often weren't fixed between visits. For example, after the first time I came in for a fitting with the lopsided boning, we talked through exactly what they would do to fix it. When I came back, it was just as lopsided. I eventually gave up on the seams not puckering, and picked up the dress a very stressful four days before my wedding when at least my boobs looked mostly the same on both sides. They ended up not charging me for the bust alterations, but since they'd added two points to the bustle my total was only ~$50 less than my original quote. read more

I'm actually really sad I'm posting this, but also never want this to happen to someone else a week before their wedding. I went into Silver Moon a few months ago to start alterations for my dress. It's a pretty easy process to get started and we even have a few dates before the wedding to come in and check on the dress. After my first appointment I came back and I had one concern about some wrinkling/pulling in the front of my dress and I expressed that I'm not a very picky person, but if the pulling that's happening is still there next time i wouldn't be very happy. (It was only on one side so the each side looked like it was sitting very different on my chest) I came back and it was still there and they really had no explanation other than what they have already done to the dress.. which didn't make me feel very good because it was still apparent that it hadn't gotten better. So I had to come back one more time so they can do more work. When I came back I was excited to pick up my dress! We are about a week out from our wedding, but it wasn't fixed it was almost made worse ): I will post pictures below. I think (I'm no professional in this field) that because of all the work done to the one side it created a tightness and the shapes of each side were completely different (worse than before), there was slight staining where they worked and my dress began to pull. They offered me a full refund, and I will be taking my dress somewhere else so hopefully it can be fixed in the next week! Wish me luck!! read more

Silver Moon is a lovely store. It's small, but their merchandise is high quality and unique. You won't find a $10 sweater here and you can tell they're extremely choosy about what they sell. I saw vintage Marshall Field's labels on some beautiful dresses as well as an Emilio Pucci slip, so it's definitely higher-end stuff. They also have a small selection of shoes and purses and beautiful vintage costume jewelry. In addition, there were a few men's suit jackets and sport coats. By far, the most stunning part was their huge selection of vintage bridal gowns that covered the whole back wall. They weren't inexpensive by any means, but they are gorgeous and one of a kind. I saw two things I was dying for (a short black wool crepe dress with faux fur trim and a pink chiffon dress with maribou trim) but as luck would have it, they weren't my size. I wanted to cry. Even though I didn't buy anything, it wasn't for lack of trying. I was highly impressed with their inventory and will definitely come back when I'm looking for a unique, special-occasion dress. After watching the play "Maple & Vine" last year, about a husband and wife who - overwhelmed with modern day stresses - decide to abandon their real lives for a 'simpler' life in a town with 1950's "re-enactors," I found myself thinking that perhaps they were onto something. Life did indeed seem to be a lot more simple back then. And heck, the clothes were amazing! If I one day needed to outfit myself for a new olden-day life, my first stop would be at Silver Moon. The items are beautifully curated - each dress and gown bearing a handwritten tag identifying its approximate time period along with the designer's name. The selection varies from casual "play" dresses (typically referred to as 'rompers' today), to intricate lace wedding gowns - and even a selection of vintage & vintage-inspired accessories to coordinate. There is also a tiny men's area up front - housing a modest collection of ties and suits. Also, don't miss (I almost did!) the display case near the register with assorted accoutrements - great for gifting! The prices run the gamut - anywhere from $22 for a pair of faux pearl earrings to $700 for an exquisite 1950's floor-length lace gown with rhinestone detail - and some even pricier items still. Though, if serious about purchasing vintage - this would be the perfect place to make a splurge. The pieces are all in like-new condition, free of that I've-been-hanging-around-in-the-attic-for-years smell that can be overwhelming with some vintage spots. I would bet that the shop has each item professionally cleaned prior to showcasing them on their floor. Bottom Line: Perfect for special-occasion pieces, for some unique bridal gift ideas, or for finding the perfect dress should you ever be called upon to fill in as Don Draper arm candy. read more

Stunning, stunning vintage clothes. Probably the best curated (albeit small) collection in Bucktown/WP/UKV if not Chicago. Although some of the other reviewers noted how "expensive" it is, I found the prices to be more than appropriate, if not less than what I'd expect (and tried on a few pieces under $100). Fabulous place to buy a party dress; on my last visit I almost bought a fabulous strapless red dress with layers of tulle and rose detailing at the sweetheart bust. The pieces at Silver Moon are of obvious high-quality; scanning through the racks takes a few minutes as you really need to take the time to move the heavy, delicate dresses. The collection seems to be more comprised of 1930s-early 60s pieces, which I adore. Lots of fitted pieces with nipped waists and detailing rather than some of the tent, poly-heavy 70s-90s-heavy collections found at other vintage stores in the area. They also have a beautiful collection of wedding dresses here, although they, too, seem to be from earlier in the century. There was a fantastically beautiful ivory satin gown with intricate silver beading last time I was there that was less than $500, and as a wedding photographer, I can say it was more beautiful than many of the thousands-of-dollars dresses I've seen in my day! read more

I had purchased an amazing vintage flapper dress at Silver Moon a number of years ago and every time I wore it I felt incredible. When it came time to find my wedding dress, Silver Moon was the first place I went and I found my dress on my first visit! There were a fair amount of alterations that needed to be made to make my vision come to life. I worked with Liz to alter the dress and it was a wonderful experience. Liz is so talented, and she was so calm and patient with me, I trusted her the whole way through. Liz had to rebuild the boddess of the dress using the vintage satin from the extra long train. In the end, the dress fit me like a glove and the dress I had in my mind was on my body, it was truly amazing. read more

I got a tip from another WP vintage store that this was the best place in the hood for bridal stuff. I am looking for my bridal headpiece so I checked it out... If I didn't already have my dress I would be so tempted to get one here. They have such a lovely collection of 20s - 50s era bridal gowns and accessories. The price is gonna be $500+ but they are gorgeous vintage pieces. Also, I'm not a size 2 by any means and I noticed they had a lot of larger normal girl sizes. I talked with the friendly staffer there (lovely blonde gal) who, with the owner, designs bridal veils and headpieces. She said a birdcage will start at $50 for a custom piece. You can bring in your own broach, pin or bling to have them incorporate it into the veil or they have quite a few interesting headpieces that they can attached veils to. For someone who has been trolling Etsy for months trying to find a headpiece it is so nice to be able to touch, feel and try on actual pieces. read more

The customer service here was good, but the alterations were not. I paid a lot of extra money to have a "french bustle" put on my wedding dress (that I purchased elsewhere), but when I picked up my dress they used snaps (instead of buttons) for the bustle. Unfortunately, the bustle wasn't finished until my third and final fitting, meaning it was too close to the big day to do anything about it. Within two hours of wearing my dress, all the snaps gave out. My dress was destroyed by the time I walked down the aisle. On top of it, because they used black snaps on a white dress, it looked like black polka dots on my train. I really could not believe how awful the craftsmanship was on my dress. read more

I was very nervous about my wedding day and my experiences everywhere I had went were so traumatic because I'm a "bigger" bride. For my appointment, Liz the owner locked the doors behind me sat me down and we had the most in depth consultation. I love the selection of vintage wedding dresses here. I actually came across Silver Moon when I was getting my own wedding dress altered nearby. After looking through their vintage dresses and accessories I knew the store was perfect for my sister's wedding dress shopping! My sister lives out of state so I made an appointment for is ahead of time. They were very good about communication and setting up an accommodating time. We went in and she tried on a wide variety of vintage dresses but quickly found a 1930's satin dress and a beautiful Juliet cap to match. The items are used so there was expected wear and tear. She needed alterations so she was measured at time of purchase and told she wouldn't need to come back to Chicago as they would either send it to her or I could pick it up. We both found it odd that when the seamstress took the measurements they didn't write anything down or pin anything (they probably should have...). I ended up picking up the dress and delivering it to my sister months before the wedding. A good thing I did because it was altered too tight! I had to bring the dress back to them. Since it was satin and they had cut the fabric out, it couldn't really be made bigger. They made it work by putting buttons on (definitely not ideal), but we were disappointed by the overall alterations process. I went to pick up the dress after the second alterations and looked at the buttons and they were very different colors lining the side of the dress. This just seemed a bit lazy to me that they wouldn't pick ones out that matched the satin color of the dress. They were accommodating and said they hadn't even noticed and they did fixed it, but I had to make another trip back. Overall, I think they have a great selection and a great place to buy vintage dresses, but I would not recommend getting the dress altered there. There are definitely better seamstress locations in Chicago. The store and the items they sell I would rate a 4, but only rating a 3 because of the disappointing alterations. read more
