I recently visited this store with my friends, and we were treated absolutely unfairly. After browsing and peacefully walking out (without buying anything), one of the workers came running after us and accused us of stealing. We were shocked, confused, and honestly embarrassed, in public for something we didn't do. They didn't ask politely or explain anything. They just assumed. No proof. No apology. nothing We cooperated and showed them we had nothing, and instead of admitting their mistake, they gave us attitude and let us go like we were guilty. This kind of treatment is completely unacceptable, especially when you treat young customers like criminals just because we're teens or don't "look" like your usual shoppers. We came to shop, not to be profiled or harassed. I will not be returning, and I wouldn't recommend this store to anyone who values basic respect. read more

She is on the phone. "Hi, may I take a quick picture?" I asked politely. The lady responded, "no photo, goodbye." While this short poem pretty much sums up my 30-second visit at Oriental Boutique, it is also an acrostic that describes the lady's attitude and the service. I was looking for a traditional Chinese dress (i.e. Qi Pao) for my girlfriend, whom I am going to marry. However, most of the designs cater to kids or tourists (that might explain why most positive reviews were written by non-Asian customers... just saying!) and very few of them are for adults. As someone who grew up in an ethnically Chinese background, I had seen and worn more culturally authentic and better designed traditional gowns and dresses. Many designs displayed in the store seem "oriental" in a western sense or as in what westerners think "oriental" should look like, but this is just my subjective observation and honest opinion. The lady was on the phone all the time, and when I asked her question, she literally answered, "no photo, goodbye." Okay. BYE. NEVER AGAIN! Maybe they were rude to me because I wasn't a tourist. But this was by far the rudest encounter I've ever had in Chinatown. And I was born and raised in Chinatown. The owner was extremely hostile towards me from the moment that I walked in. I didn't do anything wrong. She was very demanding, answering all of our questions so rudely. The owner even said right before I left the door in Cantonese : "she doesn't even know what she's looking for, why would she come here". She didn't bother waiting until I physically left the store to say this, she literally said this as I was leaving lol. I was looking for a dress, is it a crime to look around? Anyways, If you're a tourist, she will probs be nice to you since she wants tourist money. She's probably talking smack about you in chinese. But there are plenty of other gift shops in Chinatown where people do business much better. This lady clearly had no idea who she was talking to, and not to be cynical but karma is definitely real. read more

I bought black house slippers (mary-jane cloth style, rubber bottom, with embroidered flower on top) here several years ago. I still have them. They're cute, I was stoked they had my size (w 11), and I remember the price was reasonable. I stopped in today looking for a Chinese style baby outfit. Weird request I guess. I didn't realize 90% of their inventory is traditional silk Chinese dress/outfits for kids (maybe 2 y/o) to adult. The woman working there stopped what she was doing, greeted me, and answered my question. She wasn't excessively friendly, but the friendliest shop employee I've encountered in Chinatown, ever, so I have to mention it! I'm sure I'll be back in a few years when I'm shopping for traditional dress for a larger child. read more

I've bought my daughter two Chinese dresses here so far. This is the only place with this much quality variety in traditional Chinese women's dresses. Staff is very helpful. Besides the dresses, there is not much else to this store that is distinguishing. read more

The dresses here are really pretty but kind of pricey in my opinion. Though if I were looking for one for a special occasion then the price wouldn't seem so bad. Staff isn't outgoing or anything like that but helpful when needed. Definitely worth a stop in when visiting china town. read more

Lady was rude and mean. The silk dress was $14.99 for a child. I asked if she could do $12 and she got pissed told me "we don't do negotiations here if you want to go elsewhere you can, I don't care and I'll be fine." Loved it. Went in for my wife to check out the decorative umbrellas and to get out of the cold. Staff was not pushy at all. We didn't purchase anything but we were wished a good bye and have a good day. The next day right after the New Year's Parade, we went in to heat up and purchase the umbrellas. I bought my graduation dress here: A cute knee-length black kimono with red blossoms. I was worried that I wouldn't find a dress to fit me because I am plus-sized and Asian people are typical smaller, therefore smaller clothing. But it fit perfectly. The saleswoman was very helpful, always ready to show me an accessory to match the outfit (maybe she was just trying to make a sale, though). She convinced me to buy a matching take-out box purse which I love, and some cute earrings. I practically had a whole outfit right there, and I only had to go to one store! It all cost around $65 I believe. Beware though - no returns or exchanges, and I'm still not sure how to clean it (guess I'll have to shell out for dry-cleaning). But it was a great buy. Who needs a little black dress when you can stand out even more in your little black kimono! read more
