Before I met Kpoene, I was dreading getting my wedding dress altered. I had a pre-worn dress with intricate lace that was at some parts the right size and at others 3 sizes larger than me. Kpoene tackled a major challenge of bunching that was happening under the bust. She helped lessen it by adding boning, which made the top more structured and somehow also more comfortable. During the wedding I never felt the need to pull my dress up (a feat in and of itself). Also, when the outcome of one fitting wasn't quite right at the bottom of the zipper, she graciously had me come back outside their normal hours so that she and Ariana could make sure it was perfect. Most important to me is that Kpoene made the experience memorable and enjoyable - not just for me, but for my best friend, mom, and sister. I felt that any of my concerns were listened to, and we really had fun throughout. Thank you Kpoene! Having gone through the wedding dress alternation process with friends over the years, my experience was night and day to their mostly stressful encounters. This review is seriously overdue on my part, but I can't even begin to express how grateful I am for the ladies at Mignonette Bridal! Kpoene, Ariana, and the whole team were so wonderful to work with. I stumbled across Mignonette after my mom and I had gone to a number of mainstream bridal salons in Chicago, and I'm so happy we did! From the moment we stepped foot inside Kpoene's beautiful little shop, we felt so welcomed and at ease - Kpoene totally understands how stressful the wedding process can be and did everything she could to make it a fun, relaxing, and stress-free experience. Once I learned that Ariana was also a Beloit College grad, I was sold! Now, onto the dress itself...I tried on several of Kpoene's gorgeous creations that she had in the shop and decided to have a custom gown made based off of one dress I particularly loved. I decided I wanted to use some of the lace from my mom's wedding dress - Kpoene and Ariana were more than willing to accomodate! Throughout the entire process, Kpoene was extremely patient with me - I was pretty indecisive and had endless questions, but I fully put my trust in Mignonette and am so happy I did. Kpoene is a pure, utter, lovely, brilliant, undeniable force of genius when it comes to the intricacies of sentimental bridal fashion. Her shop in Roscoe Village is absolutely gorgeous, rustic, charming, beautiful. Sorry, I'm on adjective overload...but I have so much love for this girl and this shop...and the beautiful piece she created for my wedding (will upload photo ASAP!) and indie Chicago-made and produced earrings I scored from her display 2 days before my wedding. Just in the "nick" of time. Here's my story: I love my grandmother. She's adorable. She looked fabulous in her wedding attire 60+ years ago. All lace, trains, high necks, long sleeves...and unfortunately, stored out in the open for the past...oh, 40 years. Unfortunately the dress was not salvageable by any stretch, but a beautiful handmade "crown" she wore had silk petals lined in pearls. I thought, "there might be something we can do with this." And by "we" I mean, "who on earth even DOES this kind of thing?" Luckily on a great tip from my wedding coordinator (Carlene at Naturally Yours Events) I sent a quick email to Kpoene. And 2 weeks before my wedding I met with her, we discussed the vision, she looked at photos of my dress, she asked me about what I wanted to have done, consulted, and quoted me $100 or so (gasp, I really thought it'd be MUCH more!) for what the piece could be...and about a week later I came back to see what had become of grandma's "cap." She also invited me at this time to bring in my dress, try it on with the piece, etc. I thought this was a really kind gesture. Not only did I get to have that "real" wedding dress trying on experience (mine wasn't traditional, obviously)...but she even went so far as to try many different methods with the piece (belt, hair, side, etc) AND sewed cups into my super low-cut dress and put a few stitches in the front so I wasn't "Marilyn Monroe'ing" all over the place at the wedding. She did this for free. She didn't have to. She was sweet and kind and fun and chill. And just wonderful to work with. I ended up also picking up a pair of gorgeous earrings as well to complete the ensemble. She showcases some really great local designers with jewelry, bridal pieces, some art, etc. Such a beyond-pleasant experience...I only wish I was getting married again so I could work with her. She specializes in creating custom gowns, can transform old gowns, hair pieces, bridal is her thing...if you are a bit offbeat, want something special, have an old dusty gown that needs life, alterations...make an appointment. Kpoene and all of the ladies at Mignonette were so great. I wanted to find a place that would take my grandma's and mother's wedding dress (they wore the same dress) and turn it into something that I could wear for my wedding. Kpoene was right on my level and helped me to make a headpiece to wear for my wedding day as well as three almost identical purses, one for me, one for my mom and one for my grandmother. She was warm and knew exactly what I wanted and she actually made two different headpieces so I had a choice when I figured out how to wear my hair. The purses both made my mom and grandma cry, in the best way, and even better, the wedding dress is still in dress form and could be cut off into a cocktail dress length if any of my cousins or future children wanted to wear it for something. It's a hard decision to make when you will have to entrust your most special, and likely most expensive, clothing purchase to the right alterations expert. I am so glad that I decided to use Kpoene and her team at Mignonette Bridal to alter my wedding dress. This was the fourth bridal shop I went into, and it was a very negative experience. I made an appointment here because I'd seen they were having a trunk show, and I liked one of the dresses that would be there. When I called to make my appointment, I made sure that they would have the specific gown I was interested in. When my mom and I went in for my appointment, the stylist wasn't familiar with the trunk show gowns so she had to look up which one I had requested. She pulled the gown I wanted to try and we picked a few other Mignonette gowns. She had me try one of Mignonette's gowns first, which was surprisingly small. At other bridal shops, they've put me in a dress that was too big and then clipped it to fit my body perfectly, but at Mignonette the dresses were extremely tight. After the dress was on, the stylist seemed to have forgotten my mom was in the main room. I had to tell her that I wanted to go show my mom the dress, which I thought would have been obvious. When I went to try on the gown that I'd come in for, it was clearly far too small for me (bridal size 4 while I'm probably a bridal size 8). The stylist tried to get it on me anyways, and when it didn't fit she explained that the designer usually only made one dress at a time for models but that I could get it made in my size. Needless to say it wasn't a great feeling. My mom and I left after only 15 minutes. read more

They butchered my dress! I purchased a very intricate and expensive dress for my wedding- it was gorgeous and already fit quite well before took it to the shop. I was assured the shop had altered this dress before and knew what they were doing- they did not. I returned twice for them to fix it and it was better than when I originally picked it up but not at all how it should have been. They tried to take the material in too much and did not do so correctly causing all the material to bunch up and stick out rather than lay flat. They were able to fix the sides but there was a point in the front where the material suck straight out in the front of my dress below my hips... My photographers and many guests came up to me at different points during my wedding trying to adjust it as they thought it was just the lining bunching up only to realize the dress was sewn that way. It was VERY embarrassing! Any side profile photo of me in the dress is terrible because of it and made me very self conscious all night. I'm hoping my photographer will be able to edit it out of the professional photos. If you have an intricate dress - do not go here. read more

I was not a Bridezilla -- in fact, I went out of my way to be almost annoyingly aloof about most traditional wedding worry points. So right off the bat, the fact that I'm reviewing Mignonette says a lot about the caliber of service provided. If you're a like-minded woman, you might pay special attention to this review. If you're a bridal-party-assembling, tablecloth-coordinating type, you're in luck, because Mignonette caters to your high-maintenance type equally well. Just see most reviews below. I emphasize my difference only to highlight the fact that Kpoene is shrewd and intuitive enough to give you the type of experience you want, starting about five minutes into your first fitting. For me, that experience meant efficiency, speed, and value -- all delivered with a touch of soft romanticism. I did have those "aww, lookit me" moments standing in front of the Mignonette mirrors. But mostly, I was a sloppy problem demanding to be solved. About a month before my wedding, I bought a dress a BHLDN that was more than two sizes too big for me (on sale). It was a beautiful bag, and when the salesgirl pinched the fabric at my shoulders, waist, and hips, I said "Yes!" She warned me it would take a ton of alteration and referred me to Kpoene, and she was correct on both counts. Kpoene not only completed the alterations on a pretty tight schedule, but she helped me complete my look (without trying to upsell me anything). She hooked me up with a bustier (even bought it for me!), advised me on Target-brand Spanx, and confirmed that my heels were too big. I felt that her price was extremely fair, and she didn't go past her quote, even when we went to a third fitting (and she bought me that bustier). Logistics aside, Kpoene is simply a fantastic person to have by your side (you know, literally). Even planning a low-key wedding like mine, you'll run into a lot of service providers and vendors who will blow a lot of hot air at you. With Kpoene, you can talk about foodie stuff, the ilfe-paths after an English major, and a lot more -- all while she's orchestrating the best dress experience for you. I owe Kpoene at least a slice of pie, but I hope this review is a start. I hope I never have to do this over again, but if I did -- I'd go Mignonette. read more

I'll keep this quick: Pros: Easy parking Knowledgable staff Amazing detailed work Cons: My very detailed dress (4 layers to be exact) was taken in to a size 6 from a 10. My problem is that I was under the impression that for the $280, the dress would be fitted to my body and not to what $280 would get me. As a disclosure, due to my dress having 4 layers, I completely understood the price I was quoted. I just wish I would have received a courtesy call telling me that it would be a size too big. I was also a little skeptical because proper measurements weren't taken. During my initial fitting, I was pinned up instead of a being measured with tape so I was a bit skeptical it wouldn't fit me to size, but I trusted the process. When I picked up my dress, I was told it would be an additional $168 to take it in more. I wasn't the happiest person walking out, but I didn't have the energy to be combative. read more

I love Mignonette! Kpoene is amazing. I live in the suburbs and tried to contact several shops in my area with no success. Either they wouldn't work on my dress because it wasn't purchased at their shop or they wouldn't call me back. I purchased by dress at BHLDN and they were kind enough to send me off with a list of suggested seamstresses. I started to do some research and began reaching out and prepared to wait. I was shocked when Kpoene responded the same day. I booked my appointment and tried to push off the anxiety of what the alterations cost would be. Everyone told me that going to the city would be so much more money. They were wrong, but I'll get to that in a minute. The shop is beautiful. I only ended up needing two fittings, but parking was not an issue either time. When I arrived Kpoene greeted me and my mother and took a look at my dress. She immediately recognized it as the Nicole Miller Dakota gown, which put me at ease. Then she showed me to the changing area. When I came out, she immediately got to work pinning and pulling the dress so that I could see it in a completely form fitting state, which she explained is what most brides prefer for my dress. That's what I wanted too, but she was nice enough to mention that I could save a bit on alterations if I didn't want it as tight. No pressure for unneeded alterations! I couldn't believe it. I did opt for keeping it as form-fitting as possible, but her honesty was what I needed to confirm I made the right decision. A few days after my fitting the alterations contract was sent over. My alterations were quoted at $325. The main issues being taking it in at the sides, I sized up to accommodate a more hourglass figure, and the length (I'm super short and this dress is made for those blessed in the height department). I thought for sure it would be closer to $500. Another plus. When I went to my second fitting I tried on my dress and it was amazing. It felt like it had been made specifically for me. The only issue was that the tulle layer was causing a bit of trouble for me while walking and they immediately fixed that and said I could take my dress home the same day. No need to come back for a third fitting. I can't say enough good things about Mignonette. read more

Everything about Mignonette was a perfect match for what my daughter wanted for her wedding dress. She wanted to wear the same dress that her mother, aunt and grandmother had originally worn 65 years ago. She wanted to revamp this delicate vintage dress and Kpoene did a beautiful job. From first meeting when Kpoene talked to my daughter and really listened and then drew out a design from which to start. There were several fittings, much discussion, but always Kpoene was a knowledgeable professional and knew how to bring my daughter's dream dress come true. I consider myself a good judge of tailoring and dress design as I have been sewing all my life. She also worked with my daughter's somewhat difficult work schedule to get convenient appts setup with her. I purchased a strapless wedding dress from J Crew and decided I wanted straps added. I also needed the dress taken in and hemmed. I asked my photographer if she had any recommendations and she said Mignonette was the place to go. I emailed Kpoene and we made an appointment for me to bring the dress in and to chat. The store is gorgeous. Exposed brick, wonderful music and lovely accessories and home accents for purchase. Kpoene is a delight to work with. She made tea for my friend and I and looked at my gown and asked about my wedding. I had assumed that if I had straps made, it'd be from some of the material cut off the bottom of the dress once hemmed. Had I gone to anywhere else, this would probably have been the case. But since this is a dress making shop, Kpoene mentioned she had some English net that might be nice. I told her I had just seen her blog from the day before, which showed a dress with English net. I loved it on the blog, so when she said we could possibly use that I was ecstatic. She hemmed and took in the sides and I came in for another fitting. We talked about the straps and did end up using the English net. I took the dress home last night and am so happy with it. The price was wonderful and the work was done perfectly. Had I known about this shop before I purchased my gown, I would have considered having a dress made. I was originally looking everywhere for a tea length dress! But since I already had a dress, I'm very happy Kpoene was willing to do my alterations and build the straps making my dress into something I am truly comfortable in and in the end unique. I stopped in a few months before my wedding to try on veils - Kpoene' was so fun and sweet and had great recommendations! She told me that I should come back when I had my dress and that she would let me try it on with veils and accessories. My dress ended up arriving only two weeks before the wedding (eek!) but I was able to make a last-minute appointment with Kpoene' and she was so nice and patient with me and my mom while we tried on probably every veil in the shop. She ended up making me a gorgeous Juliet cap veil in only a week AND steamed my dress for me. I also bought an awesome beaded sash belt from her and her prices are totally reasonable for the quality of work that she does. If you just got engaged in Chicago - I would HIGHLY recommend that a visit to Mignonette is the first thing you do. Not only does Kpoene' make beautiful dresses and accessories, but she has awesome connections and recommendations for vendors in Chicago. What I didn't fall in love with were the price estimates from other alteration stores. Sensing my desperation, my now sister-in-law suggested Migonette. The price was reasonable (almost 30-40% less than other stores were quoting me), and Kpoene was like an older sister with how she guided me through the fittings. The team is lovely, the store is cozy and gets you excited for your wedding date. I even added a gorgeous belt to my ensemble- the accessories are wonderful! After trying on a million and one dresses that all felt the exactly same, I went to Kpoene at Mignonette for her imaginative genius. I had bought a gown way back for $100, but after tell Kpoene what I imagined myself wearing on my wedding day she was like..."Hm, okay this description of what you want is not at all the dress you bought." Which was totally true! haha. Now looking back I bought the dress hoping I wouldn't have to spend a lot on a gown, but honestly, every penny I paid to create a custom gown with Kpoene was totally worth it. I wanted to feel like a free spirit woodsy girl running through a field (in December....?!). ANYWAY. Kpoene also did an amazing job bending over backwards to give me what I wanted. I wanted a pretty impossible low back/lace sleeve combo that she together with the wonderful Sarah Lowry were able to magically engineer into reality. Kpoene and Sarah were such a dream to work with (and quite funny, I might add!!). They both worked their absolute tails off for my gown. Sarah also did an unbelievable job making late minute changes that I wanted to the bodice and they were both so so patient with me throughout the process. Kpoene also created for me a custom cap veil with hand detailed lace on the sides (AH SO BREATHTAKING), as well as a handmade beaded sash/belt that really just tied the look altogether. On my wedding day, my dress fit like a glove and I felt TOTALLY myself in it!! I felt absolutely amazing. My dress was not only comfortable, but it was so unbelievably unique and INTERESTING. The closer you got to the dress the more interesting it became!! I wanted to stay in it forever!! I got so many compliments and keep getting asked where I bought it. Also Martin, my now husband, on my wedding day told me, "Lauren I don't usually look at the detail of dress, but look at the craftsmanship! Look at the sash! Look at the lace sleeves!" Haha it was hilarious! I have NEVER heard him talk that way about clothing!!! He was so amazed and said it was the most beautiful wedding dress he had ever seen. If I could give more stars, I would! I am such a big fan of Mignonette. Mignonette was the last of 4 stops on a long day of dress shopping. Kpoene asked me what I was looking for, and I described all of the things I liked about the dresses I liked earlier in the day - nothing I had come across had ALL of the things I wanted, and I was beginning to think I wouldn't find the dress I was imagining. Minutes later, Kpoene was handing me a dress with all of the details I had described, and with a couple customizations by Kpoene and Ariana, it was my dream dress. If you want a personalized experience, and a story behind your dress, I would definitely recommend going to Mignonette Bridal! Kpoene incorporated parts of my mother's (1980) wedding dress into my 1920s inspired dress, and it looked beautiful. At my wedding, I loved being able to show my parents' friends (who were guests at their wedding) the parts of the dress that belonged to her (they recognized them). It added meaning to something that you only wear once. I liked how Kpoene included me in decisions about the dress, but did so in a way where I wasn't completely on the spot. She took on the role as the expert (which she was), but encouraged me to have a say in the design. I ended up learning a lot about lace and fabric. I went in for several fittings over the six months it took to complete the dress, and really enjoyed getting to know Kpoene and Anne as friends. -I appreciated how upfront Kpoene was about setting a budget in the beginning, and how she never went beyond that budget. -One of my favorite parts of the dress was the petticoat/lining (?). Even though it wasn't something that showed up in photos, it looked so elegant sticking out from under the dress when I would move around or if I was sitting in a high chair (which I was for the dinner). That kind of attention to detail demonstrated how much pride she took in her work. -A few days before I left for the wedding, we realized that Kpoene hadn't sewn in a piece given to me by a friend. I was ready to just call it a day and head home for the wedding, but she came over to my apartment and sewed it into the dress. She is very dedicated to her clients! I wasn't the kind of person who had a vision for my wedding, or my wedding dress. With Mignonette Bridal, "finding" the dress was so much better than searching for one in a store. I've delayed posting this for nearly a year, but I feel obligated to report my experience. I had a pretty standard full-length skirt and top from BHLDN that Mignonette had apparently worked with multiple times before. All they had to do was take up the skirt, leaving it a little longer in back, and shorten the straps of the top. Alterations were nonetheless slow and disorganized. Way too much was removed from the skirt, and the layers were cut visibly crooked, with the lining showing under the toile/netting in places. It looked amateur. They appeared not to be taking careful measurements at any fitting; they approximated and asked me to come in again and again. A snag appeared in my silk top while it was with them. Because the final length of the skirt was shorter than I wanted it and the whole process took unnecessarily long, I ended up receiving a discount, but it wasn't enough after all the stress and hassle. (At least, after they asked for an additional fitting, they delivered the finished skirt and top to my door.) I've been reluctant to leave a review because the experience left such a bad taste in my mouth, but I want to spare others possible disappointment. I seriously contemplated buying a new skirt and starting over less than two months before my wedding, but I ultimately decided it wasn't worth it. read more

I feel so ungrateful for not doing this earlier! I ended up choosing one of Kpoene's original designs for my dress, but she went many steps beyond the call. She was amazing and incorporated lace from my mom's veil onto the dress and took the gigantic veil and made it into a lovely, short, and detachable train. She's just the best. My dress was heavily beaded and therefore not the easiest thing to alter, but they did an absolutely flawless job. I wanted to do separates for my wedding to change my look a little between the reception and the ceremony. I decided to try to make my mother's wedding dress into a reception skirt. Kpoene was AMAZING. She gave me EXACTLY the vision I had. When I was having trouble finding a beaded lace that matched my heavily beaded top, she found a lace similar and bought a variety of beads to HAND BEAD the lace at the top and bottom of the skirt. She even styled the lace to "crawl" up the back of the train. The team at Ette and Kpoene worked tirelessly on my project even the week of the wedding (I kept trying to maintain weight but was somehow losing it like crazy!). I am giving more than one star because the work that Mignonette did was good. However, she quoted me $200 cheaper than what she ended up charging me and wouldn't work with me at all. She also started razoring my mom's wedding dress before we determined what the actual price would be, so I was put in a position where I just had to accept what she charged me. Then, when I asked her to adjust the sleeves a bit because they were crooked and loose, she has now gone radio silent and won't respond to me at all. In fact, she initially suggested that I take the piece to another tailor to make the alterations to her original work rather than adjusting it. I am baffled by the lack of response and frustrated that she is clearly unwilling to work with me to alter my piece slightly to make it work for my wedding day. read more

This is long overdue, as I just celebrated my 4th anniversary, but I wanted to talk up this little shop. Kpoene' remade my mom's cathedral length veil into a much simpler version for me, carefully removing the lace from the main part, and handstitching it to the smaller version for me. She knew what I was looking for before I did. Not only that, but once she heard that the department store people had been so rude to me when my mom and I went shopping for my dress, she insisted on having my mom and grandma come in when I picked up the veil. She told me to bring my dress, shoes, jewelry, the works in with me, even gave me a little bouquet to hold when I looked at myself in the mirror. She was horrified that the sept store had just given me a plastic bag to carry my off-the-rack dress in, and gave me a garment bag... even threw in a lilac sachet after hearing that was my favorite kind of flower. I only asked her to do a small thing... and she went above and beyond and was such a genuinely warm and kind person. I would recommend Mignonette to anyone for their wedding, even if it's just for small things. read more
