I was on my way from the Calabash area to the 4th of July celebration at SouthPort, NC, and I made a detour to Silver Hill Grill. It's only a few miles off of Hwy 17 going toward Holden Beach. This place is a trailer with a screened-in porch added on the front. There are 4 picnic tables under the porch area. The first thing that hit me when I exited the car was the fried seafood smell. My wife ordered the popcorn shrimp sandwich, fries and drink special ($6.75 + tax). I ordered a cheeseburger ($2.10) and a hot dog ($1.50). The cheeseburger and the hot dog were nothing special, just average (2 stars). I wouldn't order them again. But the shrimp sandwich was very good (4 stars). Go for the seafood, and I'm sure you won't be disappointed. This place is only open Thursday thru Sunday. While I was there, people were constantly picking up take-out orders. read more

I ordered a small fish lunch. It was $12.49... for lunch. The fish was so dry and either overcooked or left out for hours that it was terrible. Silver Hill Grill remains the best fried seafood in the Holden Beach area for the price. The fish sandwich (whiting) has a decent size filet, the scallops and clams are sweet, and the shrimp are small but nicely breaded and delicious. Time your order carefully, however, because it is a small operation, and they are usually swamped and typically running behind. We called at 5:10 and were told a 40 minute wait; arrived 50 mins later and had a 10 minute wait while they packed it up hot out of the fryer. It took about 20 minutes longer than we were told to receive food, but it was 6:30 on a Saturday night and we received 6 heaping entrees. In spite of living in the area for 25 years, had never tried this small hole in the wall. Reputation was good seafood at a reasonable price. That may be the case but their customer service is worse than poor. Placed an order today at 5:40 and was told would be ready in 15 to 20 min. Returned at 6 only to be told not yet ready. Sat and watched customers come and go, but no food. In fact a very nice couple who ordered also paid for my meal. I was sitting and could be seen by the employee handling orders etc. Never once did she acknowledge my presence. During this wait my dog was in my hot car. At 6:20 I told her I was unable to wait any longer and to cancel my order and make sure the nice couple who had paid for my were reimbursed. She made no effort to explain why the lengthy delay and most importantly offered no apology. At my age, I don't need this aggravation and apparently Silver Hill does not need my business. read more

The seafood is so good here, it's much better than the other restaurants on holden beach. One large plate can feed at least two really hungry people, three if you're just average hungry. That being said, you should call ahead to order and expect to wait at least 45 minutes for your food. (They usually say 30 minutes, but it isn't). Went tonight and had read the reviews ahead of time so I knew to call ahead. I called at 5:50 and she said 45-50 minutes. I was running behind and didn't get there until 6:50 - full hour. Then they said another 10-15 minutes. I walked out of there at 7:25, an hour and 35 minutes after I called. I am fine with waiting but if it was going to be twice as long as they originally told me, I would have preferred to wait that extra 35 minutes at home than sitting on the porch. They need to figure out how to better estimate the wait times because I definitely wasn't the only one having this experience tonight. Still giving a decent rating because the food was pretty good. It wasn't anything to write home about, but if you are in town and don't want to drive down to Calabash then it's just as good. On a night like tonight, you would definitely spend more time driving down there and waiting than staying local and waiting. My husband got a large plate with shrimp and oysters, and I got a small plate with shrimp. A small plate is plenty for one person and could probably get two small ones, share, and have leftovers. Food was good. Price was okay (a little bit more than I thought the simplicity of it warranted). Wait/service was pretty bad. I might eat here again but, if I do, I will add more of a buffer to the wait time, for sure, or avoid a busy weekend night altogether. read more
