Pan-seared sea scallops, asparagus, and chef's potatoes

Mr P's Bistro is a cozy little restaurant with great food. My pan seared scallops were cooked to perfection and the french onion soup was to die for. Our waitress, Sam, provided wonderful service to our party of 11. Highly recommend if you are in the Southport area!

Our waiter Michael was amazing. The service was fast and the food was excellent. The vibes were very calm and our booth was beautiful.

Our friends called 4 weeks ahead to snag a table on a recent Saturday Night. Glad they did. Food, Service and atmosphere are exceptional. Our server was very impressive, reciting the lengthy list of specials that night....and special they were. The local oysters were fresh, briny, simply delicious. The shad roe appetizer, appearing for the first time this year, was outstanding. She crab soup exceptional taste. The fresh Grouper was perfectly seared, tender, succulent, tasty --absolutely delicious. This is clearly the best restaurant in Southport. Some minor nits: - Reservations required. - Short wine list, not much to choose from. Reasonably priced however. - The place gets busy and consequently very loud - Parking on the street within a block or two.

Okay, I know I have reviewed Mr. P's on several occasions but I just can't help myself. We go there every chance we can when in Southport. Unfortunately we have been out of the country for a very long time under unfortunate circumstances and missed seeing everyone. So we went a week ago. Actually twice since we got back. Some new faces, but mostly everyone we already knew and love. Stephen does not change up the menu much if at all and I do giggle a bit when our waitresses recite the specials. I have them memorized. But thats in some ways the charm of Mr. P's. You know what it will be and its always great. These two visits I had the same things...oysters Bienville, scallops, and fried green tomatoes and another vegetable which Im blanking on at the moment, but they're all good. His oysters whether raw or Bienville or Rockefeller are fresh as you will find. The scallops are always simple and cooked to perfection. Never a rubbery scallop nor one still swimming. As for the tomatoes, I make wonderful fried green tomatoes, but as good as mine are, Stephen just knocks it out of the ball park. So just last night I made a batch of his recipe and froze them to extend the green tomato season. BTW, everything from the bar is crafted to perfection. I recommend the aviator. As usual, you won' find better staff, a better co-owner/chef, fresher better food and a relaxing place to de stress. And no they don't pay me to say it, its just that good. Cheers

Food was gourmet. Atmosphere was high class. Food looked and tasted like it was chef prepared. Service was upscale.

We have been to the restaurant 6 times over the last several years and our visit in March 2026 and last night, May 15th 2026, has prompted me to lower the rating. First, my wife's shrimp cocktail had not been deveined, for $17 dollars would expect the few shrimp to be pristine and ready to eat. Plus the greens that were under the shrimp were not just wilted but "gooey" like they were past their due date. I had the ribeye and ordered it medium rare. It came out well done without a hint of pink. The chefs potatoes last night were a mashed variety and they were cold and stiff enough to lay brick with. Our server, Richard, was friendly enough but he came to our table a total of 4 times in the 70 minutes we were there. Even if we wanted to communicate about our meals preparation it would require for our service to have been better. The lobster bisque was excellent and my wife had a side of fries that were also good. The ambience is lovely and we like the location, but after two recent visits with really poor food and service, we won't be back. To those about to nosh, you have been warned. Go elsewhere.

We were greeted by very friendly staff that seated us in a back corner. No foot traffic over there. Server came by for drink orders and we had some time to look over the large menu. It is your typical diner food. Big portions and all fresh made. We tried the Henny Penny sandwich with side of fries and the Reuben with side of fries. Chicken was cooked perfectly on this wonderful roll. Looked delicious. The Reuben meat was chopped and mixed with the sauce and sauerkraut. Very easy to eat this way. And I love the marble rye bread. Not sure where they get their bread but both sandwiches were amazing. Fries were hot and crispy too. This is a great spot right in the middle of Southport. When we finished and left, almost every table was full, even outside tables. There are only about 8 tables inside, so when they are busy, I'm sure there is a wait. We will definitely return when in Southport. Give this little place a try. Great food and service right in the heart of Southport. 5 stars
