I have an extreme fondness for the diner aesthetic of the 50's. Give me shiny silver, curved edges, a vaguely Art Deco inspired interior. I want long counters with bar stool seating. Preferably some nice lighting and bright lights or dimmer lights with a dash of red and orange colors. This is exactly what Silver Diner offers in terms of aesthetics. As soon as I saw the exterior I knew at the *very least* I would enjoy the ambiance and I was right. The interior was exactly what I had hoped. Long counter, bar stool seating, big booths...it was great! I was meeting friends but I was the first to arrive. I thought perhaps they would make me wait but nope, the host seated me right away. A waitress came by and had no problem dropping off some menus as I waited for my friends. When they finally did arrive the staff never rushed us. I don't get to see these friends often so we had a lot to chat about. I think it helped that the diner was never packed or anything, but still, it was nice of them to give us space to catch up. We were having breakfast so I ordered the Baby Spinach, Feta & Cremini Mushroom omelet. The omelet was prepared nicely and everything was cooked just right. The flavor was good (not the best ever, but solid). I also asked for Rye Toast and I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised at the wonderful tangy flavor the toast had. I really wanted some dessert and stopped in here as I thought they were known for massive cinnamon rolls. Walked in... no such thing? Either my memory is bad or they changed it up. I tried the Silver Diner about 10 years ago and after trying their juicy bison burger (with spinach substitute instead of the lettuce), this place has always had a special place in my heart. Fast forward to today, and unfortunately, I can't say the same thing. I decided to try the bison burger again, because why not? and sadly it was not the same. The bison burger was dry and the spinach was dry, not weighed in burger juices like it was before. I had it cooked to a medium level for fear it might come back too dry, but sadly that did nothing for it. In addition to the burger, I ordered the graham cracker shake which by far is the best thing on the menu. Being that I haven't tried another dish here besides the bison, next time I guess I'll have to expand my pallet. Enough people each here daily that one would believe they have multiple tasty food items. Came here Sunday and while the meal and service were very good and Zay was our waiter.. the location of our table was right next to the rest rooms. We noticed that all the male waiters keep gathering at men's room or going in. My guest got up to wash his hands after the meal and there were about 6 waiters in the bathroom talking on their cell phones or texting. They thought they were safe from the managers eyes as she was busy trying to get guests seated and served. This is a wake up call to the manager here. No matter what Silver Diner I go to, it is homey and clean. The tables are a little high for the height of the benches at Reston, but I can live with that. Many choices are available and the menu changes each season to keep up with what is current. Nonetheless, being a long-time vegan, I still have a difficult time finding a meal on the menu that is not salty or oily. For lunch or dinner, lately I order the ancient grain shrimp grain bowl because it includes quinoa and farro, two of the best grains for good health. Here is what exactly it comes with--quinoa, farro, fresh burrata, roasted tomatoes, greens, Kalamata olives, watermelon radish, sunflower seeds, microgreens, pesto, and vinaigrette. I ask the waiter to hold the burrata (cheese), hold the olives (too salty), hold the vinaigrette (too oily), and hold the shrimp--not a vegan item, either) and replace it with extra farro. The greens and watermelon radish, and sunflower seeds are tasty. Sadly, I can't order that dish online, because Shrimp and burrata cannot be deleted, and extra farro cannot be added. Then for breakfast I tried the Just eggs dish with tempeh sausage. The grilled tomatoes were good. I ordered extra spinach to replace the fake cheese sauce. However, the spinach came drizzled with oil. Why? I don't know, but since I don't cook with oil, I would not have ordered it with oil I don't know why an ingredient that wasn't listed was included. Maybe the chef felt that I needed some oil to replace the processed cheese. I'm still hopeful that one day I can find a great meal that is truly vegan at Silver Diner, one that contains whole food, without oil, not fried, not processed, and salt-free. read more

I was happily surprised to see this old timey style diner offer so many healthy and organic options! Even the jelly at the table was organic! They offer nitrate free bacon, which might make you feel a bit less bad about all that bacon you want to eat! Also, they network with various farms in the area to offer local produce and eggs!
