New to town and just had a great experience at Silver Diner in Reston. The environment is adorably 1950's complete with jukeboxes, while the menu is amazingly progressive. Tons of gluten-free, plant-based options, some organic and grass-fed meats, nitrate-free bacon, eggs and more sourced from local farmers, organic ketchup, stevia, oh my! Love it. The service was fast, friendly, and enormously helpful when it came to navigating my food allergies. Five stars. read more

While I was eating a little boy had a birthday and to make it extra special the staff all sang happy birthday and guest could too. Four stars for great local ingredients and fresh, organic options served in a retro, chrome-trimmed atmosphere with 50s music and the Jackson 5 piped in to your booth. The typical greasy spoon it's not. Usually, I would only pick a place like this for breakfast or a burger, fries, and shake with my nieces. However, with so many flavorful and healthy options (including a special menu under 600 calories that's actually palatable) I find myself choosing the Silver Diner more often these days. I like that the chef revamped the menu completely a couple years ago with the aim of sourcing local organic ingredients and incorporating them into fresh new flavor profiles. Although there is plenty of dineresque comfort food like meatloaf and pot roast, you may want to venture off the beaten path to sample some of the less expected options like the Baja fish tacos replete with spinach, strawberry, and mango salad. Great simple flavors and fresh, local ingredients seem to be a successful formula for good food like grilled vegetable salad (with beets and roasted Brussels sprouts) crowned with salmon or chicken and drizzled with housemade vinaigrette. Earlier this week I even ordered carryout--the flatiron steak (hormone free) with smashed potatoes and substituted the onion straws for grilled veggies and a salad for less than $20. Upon entering, my 5 years young sidekick and I were greeted immediately. The wee one was given extra special attention by the host. A Silver Diner cardboard farming truck was constructed and her 'Babia' (Piglet, really) was seated then in the back of it. Crayons and a coloring sheet were also provided. All of these extras were very much appreciated by both of us and it really made her smile - WIN! With a stellar first impression, our server had a lot to live up to. Unfortunately, to sum up my thoughts of Andrew: lackluster. Yes, he was nice and yes, he performed his job. It was just AWKWARD. No warm and fuzzies from Mr Andrew. Just business. And since the youngin and I already knew what we wanted, there wasn't much to handle. Since my lil friend devoured her meal, I'd say the silver dollar pancakes (which we MUCH bigger than silver dollars!), scrambled egg and strawberries were a success. I ordered the Paradise French Toast - 3 slices of french toast covered in coconut topped with strawberries, caramel and agave drizzle. The french toast was coated with just enough coconut and the drizzles of caramel and agave were light, but enough so that I did not need a drop of regular syrup offered to me. The strawberries were plentiful and an excellent accompaniment. It was all very filling and left me very pleased. Next time I am out with a craving for breakfast, I know where I'm headed. Last night was my first visit to a Silver Diner despite passing it many times on Baron Cameron/Elden. We came because it was viewed as a kid friendly option (which it was). I was encouraged by all the signs for local produce, etc etc etc coming into the restaurant. The booths here are large and good for people with families. Service was prompt and friendly. There are an overwhelming number of items on the menu. I ended up getting the pot roast - I was hungry after a day of yard work, and it seemed to fit the bill. Well imagine my dismay, when the pot roast came, and it was in fact what appeared to be stacked up sheets of roast beef. The "local sourced" vegetables were definitely from a can. So was the corn - which was the highlight of the meal. Not only that, I am pretty sure the "pot roast" was a few days old and reheated. It didn't look or taste particularly good. It also was topped with a vinaigrette drizzle, which was the salad dressing poured over the pot roast and gravy. Not a big fan of that. My wife had turkey meatballs which were somehow undercooked (red inside) and burned on the bottom. The kids had a hot dog and pancakes. Both the kids meals looked pretty good. I was jealous. Since I only ate a third of my dinner, I planned on getting a milkshake (which also looked good) to end things on a high note. Unfortunately around this time my stomach started letting me know that might not be the best idea. We skipped dessert and headed home; I ended up getting sick with the "pot roast" coming back to visit me once again. Overall, definitely the worst meal I have had in recent memory - maybe ever. I got sick several years back from the Reston Macaroni Grill, but nothing like this. And at least the Macaroni Grill tasted good going down. I will NEVER go back - certainly not with so many other good options nearby - Jackson's, Counter Burger, Sweetwater, Mon Ami Gabi, Thai by Thai. Even the Wendy's around the corner is better. If you do go, I recommend something simple (pancakes) or something deep fried. read more

Definitely not worth the money with the added uber fees and tip. Breakfast is passable. Lunch and dinner are not. Someone nicknamed this place the Sodium Diner and it resonates. IT IS NOT A DINER. I am not a diner expert but have been to some in the Northeast. There are even a couple of diners within a reasonable drive. Silver Diner is a chain. If your expectation is that SD will be like a NY or Worcester diner, fuhgetaboudit. Again, breakfast is passable. The guy who served us... was difficult to understand... heavy hispanic accent... which is okay, but he spoke so quickly because they must have been understaffed.. and he had a ton of tables. Fair enough. I duno.. when i say diner... i expect hearty, greasy, tasty food... and lots of it. When they brought the burger and fries.. i could see the plate thru the fries... (in other words.. there weren't that many). We've eaten here several times over the last few years. Some options are quite tasty, but some miss the mark badly. Service is always friendly and accommodating, and the food is relatively quick to arrive, which is important when dining with a three year old! One of my stand by orders is the chicken and waffles. It's not really fried chicken as much as chicken tenders, but always has good flavor, and the chicken gravy is excellent. The waffle can be hit or miss- sometimes perfect, sometimes overdone. I also recently had the western omelet there, and was disappointed with the omelet itself. Just severely lacking in flavor. The home fries were good at least. The biscuit was plain terrible- as dry and hard as a hockey puck. The reuben on the other hand has always been a great sandwich- fresh deli meat, great portion size, and a good meal. We will keep coming back I'm sure, just wish all the dishes were consistent. read more

All I wanted was a traditional country breakfast... so where better to go than a diner. It was about 9 AM, and it wasn't busy. I ordered two eggs over easy, crisp bacon, rye toast, and black coffee. How hard is that? I waited an eternity for the coffee to come. The waitress, a few feet from me, was having an endless conversation with a cook through the service window. Eventually the coffee came. Months later (I jest), the eggs and bacon arrived. By that time, my coffee was gone. The eggs had obviously sat on a cold plate for some time, because, like the plate, they were stone cold. The bacon, too, was limp and cold. The toast was good. The whole experience was a disgrace to good diners everywhere.... So bad at so many levels I didn't think complaining would help. Superb service; excellent dining options - especially for vegetarians and vegans, and service times are reasonable even on busy days. My only complaint? Their tabletop jukebox service seems to "forget" certain tracks queued into the rotation at the restaurant. Twice, I have spent 75 cents to select songs, only to receive 50 cents of the value in playback gratification. Shenanigans, I say! Since the reboot of their menu, the Silver Diner has become one of my favorite dining spots in the DC metro area. Silver Diner is an adequate choice if your standards are low. Friday night, drunk, munchies? Great choice. Got kids and don't want to worry about shutting them up for just one dinner out? This is the place. The food is decent, but unimaginative. And the things that do seem unique are just played-out examples of "hot" and "now" food trends that will be gone as quickly as they came. I have a firm belief that diners should be 24 hours, 7 days a week. Based on that belief, however, Silver Diner is actually not a diner at all, but an establishment begging for you to believe that it is. Some of you are quite harsh! It's a DINER, not a four-star eatery, and it professes to be nothing other than such. Anyone going there shouldn't expect top-notch service and finger-licking good food. You go there if you want to entertain a few friends for a cheap lunch or breakfast, and that's just what I have done twice already since moving here to Reston and will continue to do. I had a few "better" diner experiences back in PA, but it's the best (and one of the few for that matter) diner experience I've had so far in NoVA. Our first jaunt here was for breakfast, and the food quality is pretty much on par with Perkins (for those familiar with that Northern/Upper Midwestern chain). I cleaned my plate, and my tummy was quite satisfied, as I'm not typically accustomed to eating ANY breakfast, let alone a cooked one. We had a cute young waiter that was very attentive to our needs despite the busy "after-church" rush that we apparently hit on that Sunday morning. The pricing was reasonable in relation to the portion sizes, and overall we had a positive experience. Our second time here was last weekend, where we dined here on Saturday night for dinner. Our waitress was a shorter heavy-set middle-aged woman who didn't speak English very well, but she was very patient with us, even though two of my relatives kept wanting to switch tables because they were complaining about feeling cramped. In the end the six of us fit comfortably in a front corner booth, and we proceeded to order. I had a good milkshake (not great, but "good"), and I was pleased to have received such a large "refill" portion in my stainless steel cup to replenish my shake. My burger was very good (once again not "great"), and my fries were just okay. I WILL return to Silver Diner. It's a DINER folks! You shouldn't go in there expecting to be "impressed." Perhaps I'm just easy to please, but I truly came in with low expectations and left reasonably happy. read more

Sat at the bar without a wait and chatted up several folks, all really friendly and equally happy to be there. Silver Diner is a mainstay when it comes to morning breakfast for our family. Great healthy and savory food choices from nitrate free bacon, to farm fresh eggs! They do it all breakfast (anytime), lunch, and dinner! They're open 24/7 so they got your late night cravings down too! This place is vegan friendly so pretty much everybody's diet is covered here. Been yelping a while now, and this is one of the few places that gets 5 stars. There is one caveat to this seemingly awesome divey diner, and that is the coffee is terrible (always burned, always in need of a ton of sugar, and creamer to even it out) I've been to at least for silver diner locations and their coffee sucks every time. Our waiter was C*d* and he was abysmal. First, he served us our appetizers without plates for sharing. When i finally got my plates i noticed that he was lookong at one of the plates a little weird. Sure enough it wasnt clean, he turned the plate clockwise to "hide" the left over cream cheese spot (still wet) and placed it in front of us . Then, we got sprites and he gave my husband a water refill... and our table was never cleaned up, the appetizer was done, yet the plates were all there. No one cleaned up. Our waiter is too busy making convos with his coworkers, over making sure we are getting our stuff... been to other silver diners before and never disappointed -friendly and prompt staff. I wouldnt recommend this specific location. Better luck elsewhere. read more

When it comes to Silver Diner, you can either take it or leave it, or you're a fanatic and fast for hours before visiting. I'm the former, but I know many people who are the latter. They fast and then dig into the generous appetizer and main meal offerings, and still have room for what they really came for (who are they trying to kid???).....a malt. The malts are meals in themselves. What surprised me most about Silver Diner (this location at least) was their wine selection. A better selection of Virginia's offerings than Vinifera Bistro, which I will continue to bash in Yelp reviews until they fix that problem. As for food, the comfort variety rules supreme here (this is a diner after all), they do have some healthier options but I usually go straight for the open faced turkey sandwich with gravy. Almost as good as the one grandma made. Calling this place a diner is kind of a disgrace to true diners and coffee shops. If you want the real thing, try 29 Diner on Lee Highway in Fairfax, the one with the neon sign that hasn't been updated since James Dean was alive. For a true coffee shop experience, Virginia Diner a few blocks away from this Silver Diner, on the way to Herndon, is more of a greasy spoon variety. Three stars. Two stars could be forthcoming if I hear Rockin Robin one more time in this place. read more

I do like hitting it every now and then for the club sandwich, ham, turkey, cheese, and bacon, ummm umm umm meaty-licious. This evening I had a craving for coffee & pie, while the apple pie is ok at $4.50, + 90c for ice-cream, it felt that the apples weren't fully baked still a little rigid. But ok for it's price, however the coffee sucks, it's like the free coffee you get at work, you all know, the stuff that's been sitting in the peculator for 2 days, so strong you can stand a spoon upright in it. Just a bit more of a liquid consistency than molasses. However 2 sachets of sugar and cream makes it drinkable. read more

I've probably been here over 500 times overall. Quite honestly, I don't like the turn they've taken towards all the new trendy foods. They even got rid of my favorite menu item in their most recent menu update! Other than that, they have really great food, I would highly recommend getting a milkshake because they're phenomenal. I am a regular with my family here :) I have tried many things on their health-conscious menu: salmon sliders, roasted vegetables, teriyaki portabellos, Superfood salads, "health" milkshakes, fish tacos, Oaxaca omelette, huevos rancheros. There is breakfast served all day and you can watch it being prepared on their diner grill! I have always, always enjoyed my meal. Prices are around $10-15 for an entree, with enough to take home for lunch the next day. Super prompt service with really friendly waiters. I have to upgrade my rating to 5 stars and I am normally not a big "Diner" fan. SD has really improved in the last 12months and serve really excellent tasty food. In addition SD offers many more healthy choices made from local (!) sources. They even replaced the boring toast with a great bread. Service was excellent as well. They buy fresh and local ... Had breakfast here on a Saturday AM (just as they opened for the day) right after picking up a post-red-eye-flight friend from nearby IAD. Our options included: A) find a hotel restaurant and pay $25 for powdered eggs; B) go into the District and partake in all-you-can-eat-and-drink brunch buffet and mimosas; or C) find a diner in the DMV area (harder than it sounds since this isn't NY/NJ). Nonetheless, we found this SD in Reston (after getting off the Dulles Toll Road and losing our toll-free ride back to MoCo). The vegetarian huevos are excellent (if you are into eating kale and quinoa topped with eggs at 7AM on a Saturday morning...). The tortillas were crisp and appeared to be baked rather than fried in corn oil (no complaints here). The DC area is known more for late-morning brunching rather than early-morning traditional breakfasts and it was nice to have a Silver Diner available for traditional breakfast. read more
