Really love this concept. I first had it in a restaurant in Champaign and was so glad to find it Bloomington. I've gotten the platter as take out a couple of times. These are huge portions and it can last me 3-4 meals. They are generous with the toppings and sauces. The only thing is, I find the food a bit salty. I don't know if it's the rice or toppings in general but I can only eat so much in a sitting due to the saltiness. Now the rest of my family didn't think it was salty. I wouldn't say I like bland food as I do a lot of seasoning in my home cooking. So after my second visit today, it's review time and I've gotta start by saying, the two dishes I've had (a shwarma chicken wrap and a ground lamb bowl) really have been top notch - vibrant punches of sharp, but shockingly cohesive flavors. Without a ton of Indian or Mediterranean food expertise (outside of gyros), I was shocked how much I enjoyed all the various choices - pita, wrap, bowl, or platter with grilled chicken, shaved shwarma chicken, ground lamb or herbed steak options. Combined with all the veggie, sauce and topping choices to make, it can be staggering, especially the first time. But then the uniqueness of resulting fresh flavors make it all worthwhile. As for the environs, taking over the former Pho Bowl suite behind Krispy Kreme, was likely a pretty seamless transition. The former was quite sterile and the new business is as well - with a dozen or so tables inside, 2 or 3 on the sidewalk out front and a narrow bar along the far wall mostly for laptop-toters. Given the presence of self-serve kiosks in both the entry area and at the end of the wall bar, as well as a fancy GIANT and ever-changing TV monitors displaying the various order options, it's safe to assume there is no table service. That said, my second visit was an internet pre-order and I really liked taking my time going through the options and found the pickup process quite easy and efficient. In the process I realized this pre-order Express Cafe business model works well here BECAUSE of the complexities involved with ordering most dishes. And when you taste the bold, fresh flavors made just the way you like it, you will understand. I was a fan of Pho Bowl, and a big fan of Zoup before that. Awww, just as I am about to move away, a delightful and refreshingly authentic Middle Eastern restaurant opens! How bittersweet for me. Primarily Middle Eastern, it has a few well-matched Indian options (such as paneer) that are a nod to the owner's heritage. The interior is nice with a modern, open design. The staff is friendly and very helpful with those who don't know shawarma from shish tawook. Everything I tried was fantastic, from the lentil soup to the chicken shawarma to the adas to the torshi--it all brings you right back to the Middle East through your tongue. Even the sumac is remarkably fresh while most found at other restaurants and stores in this region is stale and lacking. My fiance and I went for the first time last weekend. Food was Very tasty. I didn't realize I saffron rice was so good. We got a bowl and a shawarma wrap. Also one of their "refresher" beverages and a mango lassi. Zero regrets on any of those decisions. I could tell the place is still figuring things out. The shawarma came out much later than the bowl. The owner(?) came out and explained things. Apparently he was the only one working who knew the process for making the wrap. We came at peak time on Sunday, so things were understandably busy. Not worth taking a star off because (1) the manager clearly gave a crap and (2) the wrap was super good. They also came out while we were eating and offered samples of a lentil soup they made.
