I have never felt more unwelcome at a small business. My 3 year old son loved the gumball machine and kept checking it out and twisting the lever. I saw no harm. I received several glares from the worker. I just figured she maybe was having a bad day. My son went to the gumball machine again and then the owner came out and looked at the gumball machine and then glared at me. Excuse me, sorry for brining a child in to your establishment. She explained that the dog was a service dog and she needed it and they told her they didn't care and made her leave the bakery. Literally refused service to a blind woman. We ordered our 3 tier wedding cake from Sugar Mama. The consultation was great, the cake was moist and we loved the selection of flavors. The employee we had our consult with was very personable and helpful. Then the issues began. We had to call and email multiple times to confirm that Sugar Mama was even going to be our cake vendor as they seemed unable or unwilling to communicate with us. Once they finally said they would do our cake, they did not provide a contract, which we asked for. Then we were told there were per mile delivery fees in addition to the flat rate delivery fee quoted to us at the consultation. Reluctantly we agreed to the additional delivery fees. Four months later we were trying to confirm that everything was on track. When I reached out to them they asked again for a picture and description of the cake we wanted. This was less than two weeks prior to the date of the wedding and we had already provided them with that information. When we sent them a picture and description on our copy of the order form they provided at the consultation they replied they would get back to us with an updated price point. At that point we didn't even want to use them but it was too close to the date to find another bakery and of course we had paid a non refundable deposit. The cake they delivered was crooked, amateurish, and on the dry side. It wasn't terrible but definitely didn't taste like the cupcakes at the consultation nor did it look the way we wanted it to. The cake wasn't great, but the worst part of working with them was the lack of communication. read more

If you've got a sweet tooth or a craving, this is the place to go! This randomly came up on my instagram as a sponsored page. After looking through all the pictures I knew I had to get my hands on their goodies (we went after work the same day!). What I loved is that along with regular cupcakes, they offer mini versions of all their flavors!! We got a half dozen - creamsicle, chocolate hoohah, birthday cake, snickerdoodle, snickers, and peanut butter. Every single one of them were delicious. It was hard not to eat them all in one sitting! The cupcakes are good, but pretty expensive. They load up on frosting too, so if you don't like eating 40% frosting and 60% cake, probably not the place for you. It strikes me as a sort of hipster establishment, not unlike The Coffeehouse, but at least the cost value is much better at Coffeehouse. They did cupcakes for our wedding a while back, but in comparison to other options in the area, it's rather overpriced. Update: It would be nice to vegan cupcakes more than once a week, since they don't seem to last long and are pretty tasty. read more

Today was my first time trying Sugar Mama and let me tell you, I am FAR from being disappointed. I ordered the chocolate chip cookie dough cupcake and the vegan apple cupcake and both were a true delight! The apple cupcake was light and delicious and you didn't have to feel guilty about it. The cookie dough cupcake was an amazing little creation and I loved sharing it with my boyfriend! I was expecting my bill to be more expensive than it was, but the price range was perfect! I decided to use this bakery to order my best friends wedding shower cake. Communication had to go through email, and after several attempts and slow communication I was able to get the order placed. Several trips were made to the store to drop off the appropriate ribbon for the cake that I asked them to make. This was a simple cake that I asked for, round, cream colored, with no writing or flower's, just a ribbon tied around the top layer with it flowing down the cake. They rec'd pictures and promised me that the cake could be done. When arriving Saturday morning at 8 am to pick up the cake for my 11 am shower, I was greeted with a PINK cake, with a bow that was tied sharply and cut off. This looked like a cake that would be served at a 5 year old girls birthday party. I was horrified with the product. What was worse is no management was around to fix the issue. I spent 20 min in the store while staff spoke to management on the phone who kept saying there was nothing they could do. I finally spoke with Lynn who said she would have the store owner Sue contact me via email. I was offered a 25% discount off my cake for my disapproval, or full refund but no cake. I was horrified. I spent $30 in ribbon, countless trips and now it was 2 hours before the shower with no cake. I left the store with no cake, no cupcakes and out $30.00 worth of ribbon. Keep in mind, I was promised a full refund, however to date I have only received a partial credit for just the cake. I left without the cupcakes and ribbon and the store manager has yet to respond to my countless emails. The day was saved however by the good folks at HyVee. I contacted them at 945 am and although they didn't have any pictures of the requested cake, they made the perfect cake that tasted exceptional and delivered it to Biaggi's for our shower 15 minutes before it started for half the price. NOW THAT IS CUSTOMER SERVICE. Sugar Mamas is a high priced bakery that is delivering poor service with huge mark ups. I will never use this bakery again. read more

Being a student at ISU, sugar mama cupcakes has become a stable dessert in my diet. I love grabbing a cupcake and coffee from the Hound across the street. This past week however, when I entered the shop I couldn't help but notice the smell. It was a moldy, stale smell. My boyfriend asked if we should leave, but I persisted. I wondered why they didn't have the door open to invite in customers- it was a beautiful day and many other business in uptown do this. The cashier didn't seem very happy to answer our questions about the cupcakes and when we went home to eat our mini 6 pack...we were disappointed. We love Molly's Cupcakes in Chicago, but it is a COMMUTE. So glad we found this option closer to home! Two sizes of cupcakes allow for "quick treats" and also "special occasion pig outs." I am giving this bakery two stars simply because the cake and cupcakes are very good. If based on customer service, It would be one star. This year was my 4th year in a row buying a pricey cake for my god daughters birthday. I don't believe management keeps track of repeat customers. If they did, I am not sure I would receive email after email and multiple calls about the $20 deposit needed to move forward with my order. I assumed that after several years and over $900 spent on baked goods over the years, they might remember that I am a repeat customer. No such luck. This alone was enough to turn me away. Then, I went to pick up my cake, and pay the balance and it was very poorly decorated. Major upset for the 7 year old who was expecting something nice. To make matters worse, the two girls at the desk handed me a two tiered cake and said "Have a nice day" as if I were to put this cake uncovered in the back seat of my car. I looked very confused and suggested I needed to cover it and they informed me they "didn't do that". So, based on price and lack of basic customer service... we are on to the next place. read more

This is my go to bakery in town. The cupcakes are wonderful. Very creative and delicious flavors. They have baked a graduation cake for my daughter. It was a big hit. I ordered a mixed selection of bars for an upcoming Christmas party. Of course, I stopped in to try one. It was the cherry berry bar. Outstanding! My husband got a sugar cookie. Had to park two blocks away, only to find the workers to be NO help at ALL! The minute I told them that my son's fiancé and I were interested in talking to someone about a wedding cake, they cut me off and said that they would not be able to give me any information at all. They said that we would need to email the decorator directly. And that was that. It was a very abrupt response to our inquiry. Zero help!
