The final product is acceptable, but the overall service experience was disappointing. I noticed an issue with the glasses immediately after pickup and returned the next day. At first, the staff refused to acknowledge any problem. Only after repeated follow-ups did they agree to send the glasses back to the factory and promised a two-week turnaround. After two weeks, there was no update. When I contacted them, they had no information and admitted that without my constant follow-up, the case would not have been handled. The issue was eventually fixed, which confirms my original concern was valid. Another thing is the lack of transparency during the purchase process. I was strongly recommended the most expensive lens-thinning option, and no alternative options were explained to me at the time, which led me to believe this was the only choice. My prescription is only 300 degrees, and later research showed that this level of thinning was unnecessary. The original lenses also showed no visible thinning, while the final product was clearly thinner. Acceptable final product, but poor communication, lack of transparency, and a service process that puts the burden on the customer. read more

I bought glasses here Nov 2023 and the person that helped me was very helpful and I did get glasses I really liked. About a year to maybe 18 months later, the blue color of my frames started to come off the bridge of the glasses (the part facing away from my face- very visible). There is now a big silver spot where the coloring is gone - which ruins the appearance of the glasses. I don't think I'm doing anything to have caused this and it hasn't happened with glasses in the past I bought other places. When I went back in to ask if there is anything that they can do - the response was very disappointing- defensive, acting like this is no big deal - just normal wear and tear. Both unsympathetic and unhelpful. The glasses were the most expensive pair I have ever purchased, even after subtracting the coverage from VSP. We have used the services of Sight Optometry a few times. The first time was many years ago, and it was OK. Over time, it started becoming very expensive. To give some context, this place is in network with VSP which is the insurance that Google/Facebook uses (and their main clientele given their location in Mountain View). The prices of every item for glassees/sunglasses, is padded to be just a bit more than what the insurance would have covered. Say your insurance covers frames up to $150 with $20 copay. The cheapest frame will be around $170 regardless of the cost. Same thing with lenses and frames. The first time we used Sight, we paid around 40 per person or something. Now it's about 130$/glasses after all the inflated prices. To give even more color, the frames I bought, i did an online search soon after rbuying it. The frame they sold for $175 was avaialble online for $75. All in, it was possible to buy the glasses for $120 or so WITHOUT insurance. Sight would charge insurance around $450, and you'd pay $120. When you sit in the store, you are constantly bombarded with upsells. The frames they will suggest you will be one of the expensive ones they have ($750), or be sold things that don't quite matter but they will tell you they do. It's much better idea to go online and order prerscripttion glasses with highest specs, OR go to costco (which also surprisingly have nice selection). Or just go with Warby Parker. read more

My experience: Walking in- the store feels very crowded and messy- this is still a business and should look as such. agreed with many of the long term customers here regarding service diminishing and a very messy office. the upselling is a nuisance but not specific to this optometrist. although, before purchasing glasses, i recommend checking warby parker to save yourself at least 50%. most upsetting is their process for reimbursement in which they require the customer to MAIL a receipt to acuvue. unfortunately, the original receipt i submitted was not itemized and when I resubmitted (MAILED) an itemized receipt, acuvue said the reimbursement time frame had expired. my insurance covers lenses 100% so it never made sense why i had to pay $100 to dr. kuo and then wait for acuvue to reimburse me -- which they did not. read more

Worse experience ever. 1. Had scheduled my appointment two months ago and they just used random reasons to reschedule my appointments twice. 2. They charged me the incorrect amount ($150 instead of $1.5) and has to cancelled it (which I have to monitor for 7-14 days). It's probably one off but they asked me to pay cash instead of card due to the small amount. Because of that, I waited outside for another 10 mins just because they couldn't find the changes. Plus the previous wrong charge, for a simple contact lens pick up, it took me 30 mins with only two customers in the store. 3. The box of my contact lens is broken. I asked for a new one right in the store. They refused to do so because it doesn't affect function. She also gave me simple, understandable answers to help me understand my eye condition. While I find the staff friendly. I won't be returning to this business again. I usually buy my frames at the same location after my eyes exam for convenience. And I believe this is part where they take advantage of the situation. I bought frames there to find out they charged 3x the price that you could get online. While adding up the different options I wanted for my lenses, the salesperson was doing some weird math gymnastics on a piece paper saying that she was trying to save me some money. The fact she wasn't using a computer or iPad with price references was a bit dubious. In the end, I was confused by the amount of times she was re-adding things. I ended paying without seeing a detailed bill. When I picked my glasses and saw the detailed invoice, there was some discrepancies with what I was told such a promised discount not being applied. With all fairness, I should have clarified that Dr. Kuo herself has been great all along. Her exam is very thorough and I have had great result with the prescription. The earlier review is more on the customer service at the front desk. Dr. Kuo spoke to me personally afterwards, and expressed her determination to fix such problems. I have no reason not to believe her. As long as they can change their attitude among staff at the front, I'd give her another try. I had a sudden need for an exam. Thought I just had an extreme floater. I went in and made an appointment for 2 hours later with no trouble at all Dr Kuo was so great and professional. She checked me out and immediately referred me to a retina specialist. Then she contacted the special herself and got me in on a rush appointment within an hour. Long story short I needed emergency laser surgery and the referred dr said I was very fortunate that day as I could have lost my sight permanently. I was a customer of Sight Optometry since 2015. There are a lot to like about this shop. The location was super convenient on Castro St. And they have a good selection of frames. I have three pairs of prescription glasses from them over the years and all work out great. However, my latest encounter with them was such a disaster that I've decided never to do business with them again and forsake a frame I've already paid for. Here is what happened: - I walked into the shop to check out frames I'm thinking about for my new computer glass. I found one I liked. They asked me to pay for the frames right away and also schedule an eye exam to get the new prescription. I agreed because they are my go-to optometry. But in retrospect, this felt rather pushy and not in customer's best interest. - I had to reschedule the eye exam a couple times. On the second reschedule, no one answered my message because Saturday was their day off. So I called again on Sunday (the appointment day) and an office staff confirmed the reschedule. - Next morning (Monday) between 8-9am I received three phone calls and one text message asking me to come in at 10:30am that day. I was super confused and annoyed. Imagine in the middle of preparing and taking two kids to day care and school while your phone keeps ringing. - When I finally got time, I texted back saying I've already rescheduled my appointment yesterday, and that their calls were annoying. Then I got a text back that says they are only trying to do their job and I'll get charged $25 because I changed the appointment on the same day. OK now I've heard enough! I said cancel my appointment and goodbye! - When I'm trying to schedule my eye exam with another optometry, they told me my insurance was already claimed by Sight Optometry. After I said the exam didn't happen, the new shop says they will call the insurance to try to sort this out. My advice to anyone thinking of doing business with Sight Optometry are: - Be on the lookout for your own interest. Do not trust them to respect you and accommodate your need. - Be prepared to tolerate incompetence, disorganization, and sometimes shitty attitude from the staff. In particular, avoid Grace (the old Chinese lady) at all cost. She is the one who totally missed my reschedule and send texts/calls that annoyed me. - Take your business elsewhere. My wife and I have had good experiences with Standard Optometry at El Camino/San Antonio. Communication with staff and doctor are a lot smoother and professional. read more

Most frustrating customer service ever- I did not know getting a pair of sunglasses could be this annoying and time consuming. I had to give them my information(which they already have on file) multiple times, the customer service person could not explain the difference between polarized and tinted glasses, spent 20 minutes arguing why my glasses would be heavy even when the prescription is super light (it was not. I tried to explain but she didn't get it). To top it off, when I picked up the glasses they accidentally took the leg out and could not put it back and had to wait for someone else. Even more so, she managed to squeeze us in on a walk in since there was another late show patient. She remembered the issues I had brought up when I had my eye exam a few months ago and followed up. I was severely impressed with her memory! Exam as a breeze and it looks like they've added front office staff! I am usually very satisfied with the level of customer service at Sight Optometry- not today! I ordered a custom pair of sunglasses in late Dec. 16' and took delivery in March 17'. Last weekend I noticed a piece of metal on the nose bridge had become detached. I took the glasses in expecting an easy repair- NOT! Apparently the 1 year warranty is from the date of order, not the date you actually take procession of the glasses. This is ridiculous! I explained it was not my fault it took 2+ months for the glasses to come in, yet I am being penalized. She just smiled and said " I am sorry it's our labs policy". These glasses cost me $500+ and they are unwilling to stand behind their products. I was a loyal customer for many years. I was a loyal customer for years- even when I changed insurance I continued going and paid out of pocket. However, in the last six months the customer service has really gone down. It's a shame because I really liked one of the female optometrists but the women at the desk are incompetent and unwilling to be helpful. I had ordered contacts the week before Labor Day and asked three times if the contacts will come on time and if they'd be open a few days before the holiday. I was about to travel for two weeks which o specifically told them and they assured me yes. They left me a message that I could pick up my contacts and when I did they were closed the weekend before! When I called to let them know they didn't apologize or try to make it right. Two days ago I called to order contacts and they informed me my prescription has expired and that they wouldn't be able to take me before the holidays. Ok. But why not call me and let me know it's about to expire? The last straw was when I called to get my prescription emailed to me so I can see another optician and at least get sample of my contacts in time. She told me she can't send it today because they're busy. REALLY?! It's a click of a button and I explained the time sensitivity. Still no email... I cannot say enough about how Yelp has bettered my health in helping me find awesome dentists, doctors and now optometrists! I was so fed up with my standard PAMF associated optometrist for the past few years because they don't have a good selection of frames, they can never process my insurance correctly despite having the same insurance year after year ... and they charge up the wahzoo! I finally took to Yelp since I needed an eye exam and found Dr. Candace Kuo. Dr. Kuo is probably one of THE nicest and funniest optometrists I've ever met. She's very realistic and will definitely tell you if the frames are ugly. She's also extremely patient and open late night so you can find the glasses that REALLY fit your face. After all you have to live with them for at least a year ... or more! She even has a cool picture machine that lets you compare up to four frames on your face at once. She uses some cool state of the art stuff that PAMF doesn't even have to check for various standard tests on your eyes so it lessens the time you will be blind which we all love after getting an eye exam. I highly recommend Dr. Candace Kuo, not that she needs anymore recommendations since she's got a phenomenal review! read more

After reviewing most of the Yelp reviews, I am not sure if Dr. Kuo is still there, who seems to be very friendly and helpful and that is probably why this place is so highly rated. I needed new contact lenses and since I moved, I needed to see a new eye doctor. So I chose this place because of high Yelp reviews. My experience was okay. I don't remember my Doctor's name, but definitely a "he", not Dr. Kuo. They made me on hold for a minute when I called to book an appointment, and started my eye exam right after I got into the store. The two Asian workers seem to be very friendly and smiling all the time. But the doctor seems to be tense and not so much smile. I got dilation, and my friend told me that usually the eye doctor give people a pair of cheap sun glasses after dilation. Hmmm.. maybe they forgot to give me one? The walk to my car was kind of frustrating since the sunshine was too strong for my eyes. Asked for prescription, never got one. Seems like this happened to other customers as well. Not sure why, but will try to ask for it again. Never heard back for another check up after contact fitting. They forgot again? Maybe for the same price, I would recommend people to try somewhere else. :) read more

So so soo upset. I went here last year and bought 2 frames. I ordered a specific pair that they didn't offer in the store. They said with that, it would only be 2 weeks wait possibly 3. I waited over a month and a half for them. Turns out the company that sells that particular frame were out of stock and were on backorder. I had to call Sight Optometry to receive this news. I was heated but I let it go for the young guy who assisted me was very kind and patient with me. Fast forward to this year, I went back and instead decided to put new glass in the frames I bought from the shop last year. Waited 2 weeks and got a call that my glasses came back BUT there was a bubble in the glass. What? Did the company not notice that? So they had to send them back for a reframe. Ok....two weeks later I hear nothing. Call them but they seem confused and mentioned they will get back to me. Turns out that the company mentioned that if they attempt to reframe my glasses, the frame will break because they are old and worn out. I just got them last year, what do you mean? Highly upset if you ask me. Is this some kind of stunt to make me buy a new pair or what? I don't know, but to be honest I will be requesting for new pair of glasses elsewhere. This place is horrible. I came here for a contact lens exam and the doctor was so rude for being 5 minutes late. They schedule the appointments back-to-back and there is apparently no wiggle room. I was castigated for being late and felt rushed the whole time even though I was only 5 minutes late. Now I'm back for the follow-up 5 minutes early, and it's now 15+ minutes after my appointment time and I'm still waiting. Very unprofessional. They also lost my contacts on a previous visit and had me return once they found my boxes a few days later. Also, their prices are extremely hidden. I paid a $20 copay and then an additional $60 for a contact lens fitting. Watch out if you get charged more. They need to get their shit together. They have a great selection of glasses and their front staff are super nice. But they are clearly trying to maximize every dollar at the patient's expense by not buying any storage space, having outdated machines and squeezing in as many patients as they possibly can. read more

I LOVE Dr. KUO!!!!!!! She is the only doctor I've ever had that is extremely friendly, thorough and helpful from beginning to end. I just wish I could go to her for ALL my medical and vision needs. During my eye exam, I really like that she took time to get to know me and not just have me dictate the fuzzy letters on the wall. I really hate it when doctors act like robots who treat patients as specimens rather than people. Dr. Kuo is great at making the eye exam entertaining, as well as keeping you informed about every detail of the process. After my exam, I had a bit of a dilemma with my insurance and she and her mom (Grace--who I also love) were very amiable at letting me pay off the balance at my convenience....even at very late hours of the night or on weekends or holidays. I purchases a pair of prescription glasses in the mid August at a price of around $900. I thought it's a quality one but this week one piece of the glasses simply drops off the frame because the screw holding the top and bottom parts of the frame is gone. Further, the top part is not aligned with the bottom part by a large offset, which makes the screw more likely to become loose. Since it's still in warranty, I asked to get a replacement of the frame. The store staff just put on another screw and refuses to give a replacement. She told me they're very busy after Thanksgiving vacation, asked me to leave store. Obviously, the quality of the frame is not reliable, and their service is not considerate. They don't value customers' time. I won't recommend this store. read more

The office staff is very unorganized. When I called to book an appointment, the lady (maybe Dr. Kuo's Mom?) answered the phone and asked me to call back later. I asked if we can schedule for an appointment via email as I won't have time to make another phone call. I gave her my email and I never received any emails from her. I called again the next day and she answered the phone again, saying "oh, you were the one who called yesterday". I was like "yeah, you were supposed to email me remember?". So I finally got an appointment for contact lenses fitting (and they couldn't tell me if insurance would cover this so I paid it out of my own pocket). Dr. suggested that I have a follow up in 2 weeks. I was waiting for the staff to call me to schedule a follow up, that never happened, and I forgot about it myself. 1 month later, I walked into the office, asked to get my contact lenses prescription, they refused to give it to me, they said I have to book another appointment for follow up. I asked what's there to follow up, the lenses were fine, I just wanted the prescription for my lenses. (they probably sensed that I wasn't going to order the lenses from them so they refused to give me a copy of my prescription). On top of that, they made me wait for 45 min. for this refusal as if my time didn't matter. I find that this places treats Caucasian people with higher priorities and are more friendlier to men. read more

Reasons this optometrist is great: I am a young guy (okay, not so young - 29, but given where I work...), and I am sick of the damn Baby Boomers (and their consistently ignorant, self-entitled luddite-style voting habits...etc). One subtle side effect of this is that all the professionals and people who run the world are old people who don't understand anything. Well, I'm coming to find that as I get older, there are finally professionals my age. Like, my doctor's approximately my age. And this optometrist is about my age. This means that I can somehow relate to them a little more, and it just makes the experience a bit more pleasant. People my age are graduating from all their grad school programs and stuff and setting up practices and starting to run the world. I like it. Anyhow, yeah, she's competent. Of course she's competent. She's an Asian female optometrist; Asian girls in this country are all pushed hard to excel (I remember a slightly-younger family friend in high school whose mom made her go to SAT prep classes and ask me for advice on how to do well on the SATs - to her mom's disappointment, I said that SATs were mostly intelligence-based tests that you couldn't usefully study for, so she should just spend time reading more fiction), and the ones who don't burn out from the pressure and end up surviving all the schooling to become professionals are all very good. So of course she's good. She's fine. The part that makes her GREAT is that she has a great personality, very funny and attentive. She didn't think I was too weird when I told her about my concerns regarding how if there was a collapse of civilization that the entire infrastructure for replenishing my supply of contacts would be gone, and that that was basically my strongest reason for considering LASIK (i.e. it's the only "sustainable" vision-correction solution). It turns out she works at Kaiser normally and is looking to start her own practice, so the office she works out of (the one listed at this address) actually belongs to another optometrist. This means that the normal optometrist gets the normal hours, and she works the odd hours, which is awesome for people like me who like off-schedule services. She's available during "normal" hours on Sundays and Mondays, and on the other days, she's available really-early and really-late. Because she's trying to start her own practice, she's really eager to build a client base, so she's SUPER attentive (my doctor is the same too way) and engaged. It's really great. One charming part of this is that her mom is her receptionist. Her mom is not a professional receptionist, but when you talk to the mom you can clearly see that this mom is SO PROUD! of her optometrist daughter and is doing everything she can to help her get her new practice off the ground. She told me my Chinese was good (it's not), and asked me if I was born here (I am) and was like "Ah, you are ABC! (American-born Chinese) Dr. Kuo is also ABC!" and stuff like that. The mom is really charming. She says I am humble for saying that my Chinese is not very good, which is wrong (I am good at making it appear that I'm good by selectively switching to Chinese only when I know it's phrasing that I can say well), but it's always nice to get praise like that from a Chinese mother-figure. Also, when I initially called, Dr. Kuo herself answered the phone and took my appointment for me (this surprised me), which is cool, because it means she does that shit herself sometimes and therefore KEEPS IT REAL, y0 (not like other optometrists who, you know, get all successful and forget that it used to be about the optometry).
