Decided to come here out of the blue and I'm glad we did. What really caught our eyes is that they had dim sum and my husband and I love us some dim sum!!! Came in around dinner time at 7:30 and wasn't too busy. Service was pretty fast and friendly. Here is what we ordered: Calamari- It was just okay. Nothing to brag about Sesame cake- Our waiter recommended ordering this since they were out of the green onion pancakes but the sesame cake was pretty delicious as well. Shumai- Yummy and not very small like at some other dim sum places Shrimp dumpling- Very delicious. I would suggest eating these first as the wrapper gets pretty sticky icky! Chicken fried rice- Surprisingly really really good! I'm sure we'll be back to try other things on their menu. read more

Best Chinese food I've had in East Bay Area! Generous portions. Egg roles are crispy. Hot and sour soup was so good and has lots of pork in it. Black bean chicken delicious. Braised tofu has lots of veg including bok choy. Friendly staff and they are doing take out. Highly recommend! Can't wait to try more of their menu items! read more

The restaurant I'd go out of my way to come to, so that I can order the fish fillet in soup, with chilis! I haven't had anything like it anywhere else. It's a thin broth, but cloudy so it feels creamy, and has chilis (but not too dangerously spicy). The other highlights from here are fried rice (exceptionally fragrant), jiajia noodles, walnut prawns, sesame bread, and pork shoulder. All super delicious. I look around and it's clearly a local favorite (a diverse crowd). Wait staff is great here. I've never had to wait for a table. read more

The best Chinese food around Berkeley/Albany. Come here at least once a week and have tried almost all the cuisine on the menu, which never let me down. My favorite would be Kung Pao Chicken, beef combo, and crispy sweet and sour fish. The service is just as great as the food. Definitely the best Chinese food in the town! read more

Should go here for just a couple things IMO Beef tendon (spicy) cucumbers (spicy), are maybe the best around. perfectly cut. perfectly cold, great sauce. good technique. Agree with another poster, it is watered down. Sadly because people don't pay much for chinese food, they are forced to use fish like tilapia, etc. wish there were some more options read more

To be fair, this review is based on one visit and it was on Christmas Day 2016. Perhaps they were not expecting the droves of my tribe. In any case they were really busy and couldn't handle it. I'd give the food 3 - 3 1/2 stars and the service 1/2 - 1 star. We had a reservation so did not have to wait for a table. However we had to ask several times to place our order and this was after being seated for more than 30 minutes. We arrived for dinner at 5:45 and they were already out of brown rice. Luckily, I checked the bill because we were charged three orders of it and an extra order of white rice. Speaking of the bill, that was another 1/2 hour wait. Then it came with the mistakes above. Another ten minutes to get a corrected one. And then there was a problem with the printer and only half the bill was printed so no total. Sigh. The food. Overall good but almost everything was was too salty for everyone at the table. Folks liked the veggie potstickers a lot. Ditto the fish soup. The calamari was just ok. Ditto the green onion pancakes. Veg chow fun was great. Fish with black bean sauce was a hit as was the dry fried beef and Mongolian lamb. Green onions and tree ears was a pleasant change from same old vegetable dishes. Unfortunately the dry fried green beans never showed up even after we asked for them. Rice cakes with pork was good but the promised Napa cabbage wasn't to be found. Kung pao chicken was good though they initially brought the version that wasn't ordered. The staff was so overwhelmed one waiter was running and almost slipped. A bus boy was hurrying to fill a teapot he hadn't opened in his haste - didn't seem like he burned himself. Same guy was carrying practically our entire table of dirty dishes to the kitchen and nearly got into a head on collision with another sprinting waiter. Based on this visit I'd be hard pressed to give them another chance. read more

- Best Chinese food (non Cantonese) in Berkeley / Oakland - I've ordered (on UberEats) from this place at least 100 times. After living in China for 10+ years I can safely say this is the most native place in Berkeley / Oakland without question. If your impression of Chinese food is orange chicken / panda express then this is definitely NOT the place for you. The place is for natives and the spice is right. List of dishes which I can give 5 star: - Boiling fish - Tea smoking duck (shockingly native, not consistent in quality every time, but when it's good it's second to none!) List of dishes which I can give 4 star: - Mapo Tofu (the one from Spice 3 is visibly better) - Water Mouth Chicken (the one from z & y is better and arguable the best in the Bay Area) - Xinjiang Chicken (many place in south bay has better ones) - Stir fried cauliflower w/ bacon - Spicy pig ear - Spicy beef cold cut The menu is super long (which is usually a good sign for Chinese restaurant as it indicates capable chef) so I can't vouch for all the dishes. For those I had there's ups and downs. But within the region (Berkeley / Oakland), I hardly see another place that even come close. Big fan! Attaching my standard of 1-5: 5 - so good that you should fly there just to try it. Innovative and delicious. Strong menu overall. 4 - outstanding in its category locally. Would worth up to 1h drive. Strong dishes here and there. 3.5 - great food here and there but unstable quality. Would be a good choice for take-out but definitely not constitute a good date night dinner. 3 - if you come with expectation of 3-star food you won't feel disappointed. Mediocre at best. 2 - subpar food / service. Something might come out to ruin your experience. 1 - no, just no. read more

I've ordered from this place a number of times since COVID, and I have to say, the food is fantastic. A tad on the oily side, but, OMG, so tasty. Definite must dos: the pork shoulder, the chow mein, and the sesame bread. The Spicy Szechuan Water-Boiled Fish and dry cooked green beans are wonderful. And the cured meat eggplant and walnut prawns are delicious. Just FYI: portions are generous! read more

Their Spicy Szechwan Boiled Fish Fillet (水煮魚) has generous portions and is properly spicy. The Szechwan Pepper Beef Trip and Beef Flake appetizer (夫妻肺片) was over salted; it tasted like it had too much 老幹媽 sauce you can buy at 99 Ranch. The Szechwan Beef Stew in Clay Pot (川式牛腩 煲) was surprisingly good. Beef stew in clay pot is typically a non-spicy cantonese dish, but this Szechwan variant had a bit of chilly flakes and peppercorns for flavor without overpowering the beef. The bamboo shoots were tender as well. read more

This place is the real deal! Recommendation to the restaurant - get some Pea Shoots. Recommendation to everyone - come on an empty stomach because this place makes an incredible ma pao dofu comparable to some of the best places in SF China town. I really wanted to like this place, but I'm quite disappointed! The wonton soup was too "spicy" for my child and tons of e=weird veggies in it. Not the plain, clear broth soup I'm used to. The mandarin chicken was soggy and not very flavorful. The dry green beans were not cooked enough and had no flavor. Sigh. read more

Our group of 6 decided to meet here for 5:30 pm dinner and we had a really nice time. This was partly because we enjoyed the food, and partly because the staff made us feel welcome. Thumbs-up on nearly all the dishes. I suggest balancing your order with a mix of spicy and not-spicy dishes. FOOD: My friends raved about the fried calamari, which was hot, crispy outside and tender inside. The crispy prawns with dried chilis were AMAZING and hot-hot-hot. I liked the cumin beef but would have liked it spicier. We also had mandarin noodles with vegetables, a chicken dish, and ma-po tofu (swimming in a sea of chili oil). Everything but the tofu was a hit. VALUE: Good portion sizes, and the food was fresh-tasting. We were all full by the end. AMBIENCE: Also nice: the restaurant was relatively quiet (we could all hear each other talk instead of yelling across the table). At the same time, there's enough space between tables that we could laugh and joke without disturbing other diners. SERVICE: Generally, the service at Chinese restaurants is brisk, but not warm (which is fine with me). But the wait staff was a little more relaxed and friendly, and the manager checked in part-way through and joked with us. When they found out it was a birthday celebration, they added a little mochi birthday dessert for the table and seemed genuinely excited for us. It was very sweet. read more

Summary: One of my pet peeves is when restaurants dump a ton of salt + fish sauce on things and expect the flavor to be authentic. Unfortunately based on the food we ordered here, that was the experience. Where is the unique fragrance from the chili oil and the Ma La spice from the Sichuan peppercorns? Let me know when you find it here and I'll be back asap. This is a no-nonsense kind of Sichuan restaurant. The tables are clean and simple, and the wait staff is quick and not very interested in presenting some sort of ambiance. But that's fine, we're all here for the food anyway. We ordered the Braised green bean with Eggplant because we couldn't decide between dry-cooked green beans or eggplant in spicy garlic sauce and thought this one sounded pretty promising. To our surprise, the dish was pretty much the standard eggplant in fish sauce. There was no green bean in this dish. Perhaps the eggplant was sliced differently and less oily, but the taste was almost not distinguishable from what you would expect for eggplant in spicy garlic sauce. We also ordered Soft Tofu with Spicy Beef. The beef was not very tasty because it was chewy + fattier than expected. Both dishes were rather salty. Even though the meal was very affordable (we also ordered rice, which doesn't come with the meal) because we each paid $15 including tip for dinner, I would still say the food leaves more to be desired in terms of authenticity. A last word of caution: This is not a vegetarian-friendly place. Most of the options are meat or seafood, and of the few vegetable dishes I saw some of them also came with shrimp, etc. read more

I had no experience with this place, but do know something about Szechuan cuisine. It maybe been an off day, but the "thousand chicken" entree recommended by the server ( who maybe been the manager) was way over salty and very greasy. I decided to try Sichuan Style because of the 4 star ratings. I ordered the sesame chicken, green beans and house special duck and both were delicious! The sesame chicken had a great sauce to it. Excellent local Chinese food. The fish soup with peppers is a must order. String beans dry fried and spicy eggplant are solid too.

Amazing food and good portion. Service is meh, but didn't come to chinese restaurant for that. Will Def come again.

This was great Sichuan food! We got the Mapo Tofu, Chongqing Chicken Wings, and the Dan Dan (Tan Tan?) Noodles. Everything was very flavorful and authentic with that signature mouth-numbing heat from the Sichuan peppercorns. Thanks for reading my review of Sichuan Style Restaurant. read more

I've been a customer for 50 years since king Tsin days. The food and service are always excellent.

Food: 4/5 Price: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Ambience: 5/5 Sichuan Style is an authentic Chinese restaurant that's clean, comfortable, serves great food, and has great service. The thing to get here are the authentic Sichuan dishes! They have more than 200 menu items, ranging from big banquet dishes to small dim sums. The food was overall authentic and delicious, but too salty. 95. Chongqing Chili Pepper Chicken Wings - dissapointed... it was a little over-fried and too crispy for us. Super salty, and had lots of bones. 99. Xing Jiang Style Sauteed Beef - favorite dish! The beef was well seasoned and I liked the peppercorn. A nice change to our typical cumin beef. 136. Home Style Five Spicy Pork Shoulder - high hopes but dissapointed. The pork shoulder seems to be pre-made a couple days ago. The skin didn't taste that good, and the pork was overly charred and dry on the outer sides. 215. Sesame Flat Bread - YUM! The bread was fluffy and swirled with scallion, with a nice sweet sesame crust. Favorites: * Xing Jiang Style Sauteed Beef ($13.95) * Sesame Flat Bread ($6.95) Others: * Chongqing Chili Pepper Chicken Wings ($11.95) * Home Style Five Spicy Pork Shoulder ($18.95) read more

What an excellent find for authentic Sichuan food in Berkeley (coming from an Indian person, but I'd like to think I've had my fair share of Sichuan food). Ambience-wise, it's a very welcoming, typical dimsum-style Chinese restaurant. They offer a limited variety of dimsum, but we didn't try any today. Service was fine- we had to wait a couple times to get their attention for water or ordering more after the initial ordering. However, when they did come over- they were very nice, polite, and helpful. They owner was especially friendly! Now let's get to the meat of this review- the food. We only tried two items but they were both top notch! The menu here is extensive- and by that I mean they have over 200 items. It can honestly get pretty overwhelming, so if it's your first time, going with the popular yelp items may not be a bad strategy! I did that and it worked out great for me. We got the Sichuan boiled beef and the xin jiang style sautéed lamb with witch. Both dishes had plenty of numbing flavor from the sichuan peppercorns- so if you don't like that taste/feeling in your mouth- this is the wrong type of food for you! The lamb was perfectly sautéed (texture was almost fried, yet succulent) with lots of cilantro, green onions, and Sichuan peppercorns. It's a pricey dish (15.95) but so very tasty! The boiled fish was 14.95, and MASSIVE! Their was a decent amount of fish, but there was SO.MUCH.AMAZING.SAUCE. The garnish on the dish is fantastic- fried dried red chillies, lots of garlic, and Sichuan peppercorns. I'm not a fish person and almost all cooked fish tastes smelly to me, but this dish might have turned me - the fish was soft and buttery and the sauce had bomb flavors. Highly recommended dish! We also got rice on the side (4.95!?!?!) but at least it was a large portion. Overall, this was more than enough food for three people. We brought home 2-3 pieces of fish with lots of extra sauce. On our way out, the owner made are we took a menu card for takeout and also told us they are on ubereats! We didn't order any noodles today, but the quality looked excellent at the tables nearby. Boyfriend is a big fan of springy, chewy noodles (preferably hand-pulled). Didn't see any hand-pulled on the menu, but definitely saw some good looking noodles. Can't wait to come back and try so much more -especially the zha jiang noodles! read more

I had high hopes for this place (especially after seeing a review here saying it's on par with SGV restaurants), but too many of the dishes I ordered for take-out were disappointing. I usually love Sichuanese food for its punch of flavours, but too much of what I tried here was relatively bland. 1. Pork Ma Po Tofu: The sauce was missing something. A little too thin on the flavour, and a little too oily on the tongue. There was a bit of numbing spice, but it could've used more heat. This is such a go-to for a Sichuanese restaurant that I really expected more. 2. Szechuan Tan Tan Noodle: Noodles were way too soft, no chew. Noodles were thick instead of the thin ones I'm used to seeing in this dish. Sauce (broth?) was extremely watery and flavourless. No yacai to be found, and almost no spice, mala or hot. I had to dump in my own chili oil, soy sauce and black vinegar to make this palatable. Another usual crowd-pleaser from a Sichuanese restaurant that was a let-down. 3. Spicy Szechuan Water-Boiled Fish: This one was fairly good. Lots of ginger, chilies, garlic and other aromatics; not fishy. 4. Sesame Bread: This one was good. Fluffy bread with a light sweetness, sesame crust and scallion pieces on the inside. Not something I'd associate with the Sichuan region, though. 5. White rice: A bit dry, which I personally don't mind, but I'm wondering how fresh it was. Ordered during the COVID-19 lockdown for pickup via Grubhub. The chalkboard sign outside advertised free homemade pickles included in all take-out orders... but my order didn't include any. Portions were a good size. Unfortunately, the majority of the dishes I ordered just weren't appetising enough for me to be happy about having leftovers... It's possible that I just came on a bad night. Maybe there's a drop in quality due to the COVID-19 situation. But my experience was disappointing enough that I'm not going to come out of my way to give it another try. read more

In my never-ending quest to find a good Chinese restaurant that is a better value than Panda Express, I stopped in to this place for t take out lunch on a Saturday. It is a giant restaurant and it had only two tables occupied (other than the one occupied by staff eating -not a great first impression). I ordered kung pao chicken with brown rice and it cost in excess of $14. While the portion size of the dish was large, I did not appreciate being charged an extra $2 for rice! The food itself was very good, it was a novel-tasting Kung-Pao with ginger and some other spices that were a welcome addition to the usual dish. Unfortunately, the chef cut the dried chili peppers that are the normal part of this dish into 1/4" segments, so it was impractical to pick them out. At first I thought this was a creative and positive modification as I like spicy food; however, the peppers added more of a burned taste than a spicy taste. Not a deal breaker but still not finding reasons to pay $5 more than what I would have gotten at Panda. On the positive side, they provided a generous portion of hot chili oil, which enabled me to spice up the dish. Even though they are not a better option for takeout Kung Pao Chicken than Panda, they have a enormous and diverse menu (including 5 frog dishes!). I think the best way to try this place is as a sit-down customer. So I'll hope to be back for that! read more
