Madras Thali
Himadri G.

Came in for dinner a few days before New Years and were pleasantly surprised with our meal! We got the sev puri, mysore masala dosa, uttapam, bisibella bath, and madras thaali. We also got a madras coffee. The food was quite good overall. The only critique I have is that the bisibella bath had a touch too much cinnamon but it was still comforting. I'm quite critical when it comes to South Indian food but the chutneys and sambhar were actually decent! I do wish the dosa was crispier though. I'd come here again to try other things.

I've been coming here since I was young, and the quality of the food has improved a lot from when I was just a kid. The samosa was actually really spicy, which surprised me (in a good way). The puff pastry of the samosa was super flaky, and the potato stuffing was so well-made. The dahi puri and sev puri were also 10/10. We got medium spice for those, and they were both so refreshing. The gobi was also really warm and juicy and flavorful with the sauce. The service was also super fast, and we got our food within 2 minutes of ordering. The ambiance is pretty basic, but that's expected for hillcroft where all the Indian restaurants are, and I don't really think much about it when the food is so good.

They only serve vegetarian food It's cheap and good. My 1st time here and will come back in the future when I'm craving for Indian food

I am in love with this place. The food is all very good, flavorful, and an experience. The portion size is like the boyfriend who goes beyond your expectation, showing you're capable of being love more than you ever thought. The price is shockingly affordable and unreal. Makes me want to come here more often to try out the different foods. Mixed pakora appetizer - it has paneer, mixed veggies, and pepper (seperate, not together), i liked the veggie pakora Dosa - idk which one i got, but it had potatoes in it, came side of sauce and they were all so good, the softness from the potatoes that warms the dosa, and the change in texture from the crispy outer dosa Samosa Chaat (friend got it) - beautiful blend of sweet and savory from the chutney and the curry with the soft chickpea and added crunch from the cut up samosa and the crispy topping Saag Paneer - the first time i had this dish was the HEB version, which is sad, flavorful, and wet(?) in comparison to the one I had at Shri Balaji Bhavan - the one here is rich in flavor, paneer is nice and soft (not rubbery like the one from the HEB frozen meal), spinach mix is perfectly mixed to a delicious texture I bought the dosa, cup of chai, and mixed pakora appetizer, which all came out to about $12. Service is good. Water and utensils are self serve. The place is more of place to have dinner alone, with family, or with friends.

I had one day to spend eating in Houston so I had to pick wisely where to eat. I found this place serving filter coffee which I have had in India and the pani puri is recommended. Went ahead and ordered those and a dosa. The pani puri was the worst! No flavor just a straight shot of spice! The filter coffee tasted just like an American coffee with milk added to it. The dosa was ok. I was disappointed mainly that I don't have time to go hunt for a better place The service was not bad, you order at the counter, pick a table and they will bring you your food. The ambiance feels like you are actually in an Indian restaurant with all the aromas but nothing really stand out to make it an authentic experience.

A good stop for Indian food. Less spicy except for corn bhel or if u request, big fan of the dosas here. Service is fast and staff is friendly. Its Navratri so we had special dietary requirements like no onion garlic and they had plenty options to cater to our restrictions.

It's one of those places that I've been going to forever but never think about to review it because it's so basic.... nothing fancy, just good solid food. You order at the counter. They give you a number and then you sit down and wait for your food that you have to go pick up yourself. I have no clue why they give you the number but that's just what they do. The interior is dated, but clean and the food is flavorful and inexpensive. So what more can you ask for when you're in the mood for a quick bite. Honestly, it reminds me that I need to go more often

We had stopped coming to this place cuz of their long lines and never working restrooms. The food never disappointed us but the ambience wasn't great to bring friends and family to. My in-laws were in town and wanted to try South Indian food and so we brought them here. We ordered their Mysore Masala Dosa, Masala Dosa, Idli, Masala Uttapam, and filtered coffee. Everything was excellent except the uttapam wasn't fully cooked inside and they were happy to remake it or replace it with another meal. We had them remake it and it came out great. It's a great choice is you're looking for good South Indian dish and don't much care for the ambiance.

Mysore Masala Dosa

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Houston, I've been coming here since I was a kid. Their mysorre masala dosa is fire. when I was a kid, I would finish one by myself, it's still one of my favorite go-to as an adult. Their sambar is delicious! I also enjoy their samosa chaat and pao bhaji. Recently, I tried their pao bhaji dosa, and I think that's my new favorite and I can't wait to go back and order it again!! So good I highly recommend Shri Balaji Bhavan. It's a Houston, staple for delicious, affordable, and reliable South Indian food. This place is vegetarian so there are lots of flavorful options if you are vegan or vegetarian !

Some thing has changed about this place in the last 5 years. I used to like it previously but I definitely love it now. The food is so authentic and so light on your stomach. Reminds me of homemade. The ppl are nice, the restaurant is decent, some of f favorite things to try here are tamarind rice, upma and of course, the dosa. Highly recommend it, if you're missing Telangana / South Indian food

See our empty plates and after a lot of pleadings it FINALLY showed up, the restaurant was semi full so no excuses.....

One member on our table waited forever to get her food. People who arrived MUCH after us got served before we did,

Pani Puri (6 pc) and Samosa Chaat
Meryam A.

The restaurant is located in a shopping complex and doesn't have a lot of parking out front. There is additional parking in the back though so don't worry. You have to order at the front, we got the paani puri, samosa chaat and masala dosa. They call you to grab your feed and water is self serve, which isn't bad but it would be nice to have the service. Everything tasted good but it was nothing special and it was definitely on the spicy side.

I have to knock this up to a 5 star because man. Everything was just delicious. There no place like it that I have found. Their dosas are just perfect.

We went right at noon expecting that, for being lunch time , it was going to be packed, but fortunately it wasnt; the ambiance was mellow and the music just perfect. Service was OUTSTANDING! Our server, Vino, was wonderful, knowledgeable, great recommending according to our cravings and spicy levels. So sweet and polite. We ordered 4 different dished and ALL OF THEM were incredibly flavorful, tender, and portions were very generous. First we ordered Chicken 65 as an appetizer... very very delicious! The tenderness of the chicken and the spices of the marinade were a BOMB ! Rather spicy if you dont have a medium tolerance level. We got also the butter chicken with rice; very flavorful and the sauce had a perfect thickness. Not spicy at all and the chicken was BUTTER tenderrrrr The spicy chicken byriani was THE BEST! Indian style byriani i have ever tried! The cardamom was so fragrant, the chicken melt in your mouth and the rice so fluffy! DEFINITELY a must try. Ultimately we tried the tikka grilled chicken ... be ready for an explosion of flavors! Gingery, limey, with a hint of charcoal. Super juicy and fork tender!! Incredible! Overall this is a 5 out of 5!! Must go

Our order included potato samosas (BOGO), the chicken 65 (BOGO), goat curry, palak paneer, and garlic naan. Samosas and the chicken 65 were both delicious; dip both in that mint sauce with the samosas to kick up the flavor. Be careful as the chicken 65 (mini fried chicken bites) have spiciness to it with a good amount of chili powder and pepper kicked in. The goat curry was alright, don't know if I would order it again as the grease was overwhelming. I wasn't a fan of the palak paneer, found it too runny and it was leaking when it was delivered to us. Also the garlic naan was a bit hard in the middle; maybe it's due to the packaging? Wouldn't mind ordering here again but we'll definitely do some different items. Hopefully the samosas and chicken 65 are still on the BOGO status cause we'll definitely take those again.

So flavorful, and not too spicy. What was spicy was the pani puri, so be mindful of the kick. On the opposite side of the spectrum was the Kathmandu curry which comes with a side of naan or rice. The crowd kept coming, and by the time we were done, the line appears to have grown to 1+ hour. Tip: Come early, especially on weekends! There was a sign saying that dining time is limited to 1 hour - completely understandable. Most of the clientele are South Asian - a good sign. The interior is clean and pleasant. The weekend buffet doesn't come cheap. We paid around $27 per person before tax or tips. But you get what you pay for - probably around 40 items, more than any other Indian buffet we have been to. This includes vegetarian items, meat dishes (chicken/lamb/fish), dessert, and drinks - including chai tea and rose milk. The quality is very good. We left absolutely stuffed.

The spread includes a good variety of South Indian dishes, mainly Tamil and Telugu cuisine, with plenty of vegetarian and non-vegetarian curries, rice, dosas, and other traditional favorites. The food was definitely on the spicier side. While there was a decent selection, I found the overall taste to be fairly average. Nothing was particularly memorable, and I didn't feel it justified the price. The restaurant itself was clean, the ambience was pleasant, and the staff was courteous. The biggest downside for me was being handed the bill while we were still eating. At an unlimited buffet where you're paying a fixed price, it made the experience feel rushed and took away from the relaxed dining atmosphere. Overall, it's an okay spot if you're specifically looking for an unlimited South Indian buffet, but for $25 per person, I expected a more memorable meal and a better dining experience.

4 stars. Stopped in…read morefor an early weekday dinner. The place wasn't overly busy with dine-in, but the to-go orders were running nonstop. The inside isn't giant -- on the smaller side, with a lot of tables packed in, plus a couple of larger ones for bigger parties. Pro Tip: The spice level is was Medium/low, so if you are expecting some very spicy dishes you need to ask for them. Frontier Beef Karhai, $19.50 -- 3.5/5. Himalayan fried chicken, $24.99 -- 4.5/5. Nice crispy batter, prepared a little differently than you're used to. It's skinless, bone-on chicken that's been filleted off the bone a bit, so instead of a plain drumstick, it's more like a filleted drumstick, with the breast filleted off, with a little bone left on to hold it together. The chicken was super tender and moist and the batter was crunchy. There's a bit of an Indian flavor profile, but not overwhelming -- I was actually hoping for a little more spice, kick, and heat. Still, very good chicken, and I'd try it again. Rice, 3.5/5. Solid side, but nothing spectacular. I've had much better. Garlic naan, $9 -- 3.5/5. Solid, big piece of naan. Would get it again. Service was quick. The food took a little while to come out, mostly because of the fried chicken -- though we ordered that right when we sat down, then ordered the rest about ten minutes later as we looked over the menu. If you've lived in Houston all your life, I highly suggest giving this place a try. It's one of those Houston staples that's been around, and some of the things they do are really good and a little different. That said, from a value perspective I think a place like Aga's outshines them just slightly. I've had many of the same curries at Aga's and find them a touch better, and a slightly better value. In the end, it's a totally fine place for takeout or to sit down and eat give it a try. Would recommend, and would return.

These are some of the best drinks I've ever had at any type of Indo-Pak restaurants in Houston. The mint lemonade was definitely in a league of its own. We didn't go for any appetizers, just went straight in to the entrées. The Chicken Hara Masala Supreme. Just wow, chef's kiss. Think cut up chicken thighs in a green curry that almost has a salsa like mouth feel with vegetables. Absolutely decadent. The Steak Tikka. Round of applause. I overheard the owner telling other tables that it's the best steak in Houston. I'll say it's the best steak I've ever had at an Indo-Pak restaurant. The steak was super tender it had that famous Tikka style smokiness. The Butter Chicken. Pretty damn solid. The gravy was silky and perfectly textured. They also use chicken thighs for this, which makes it even better. The Saag Paneer. It was all right, I've had better at other places, but still super solid. The Paneer was fresh and was great on all the various naans we got. For the naan, we just got the garlic and the butter naan. They are absolutely great when they come straight out of the tandoor oven, but I found that they get a little too hard if not eaten quickly. I'm sure they would reheat really well. We also tried the spicy rocket naan and it decent. I would just stick with garlic and butter. The only miss for me was the Mutton Biryani. Don't get me wrong, it's a solid biryani dish, but I've had better that had a little bit more flavor. The mutton was very tender, but the opportunity was making the rice a little bit less clunky. I see a lot of reviews with people hating on things like service or area. Let me just say we had no issues with service. The service was top-notch. We spent $222 with tip across three people. A little pricey but totally worth it.
