I love Indian street food and am grateful for the Gandhi District's diverse selection of Desi restaurants. Shiv Sagar is one of my go-to spots. This time, I got pani puri and sev puri as snacks--loved assembling the pani puri myself, and the flavors burst in my mouth! Ordering is simple: walk up to the counter and give them your table number. They've also introduced a rewards program, which is a nice bonus. Plenty of parking is available, and be sure to check out the Indian grocery store in the same plaza afterward!

Food was great! The Raj Kachori hit all the right taste buds as it exploded with flavor. The dosa and Bombay sandwich also fantastic. Whenever I'm in Houston this will be my chaat go to! Really clean and had clean bathrooms as well which is also appreciated!

Aloo paratha with no filling, half cooked dough thick enough to feed cows!!

Wonder why this place is so hyped!!!! Been there 4 times in the last 4 years and always been served below average food. Soggy chaat, bland dosa, thick aloo paratha with no stuffing made to feed cows.

Incredibly cheap yet super flavorful! This vegetarian Indian restaurant was such a hole in the wall gem. My first time trying Dahi Puri and it was amazing. So much flavor it such a small bite - it does get soggy fast so make sure you finish them right away

    Bhel Puri and Mango Lassi

The bhel puri was a really interesting dish. I'm not entirely sure of all the ingredients, but it had a wide range of flavors that worked well together. The closest comparison I can think of is salsa, it had that same mix of freshness, tanginess, and a bit of crunch. The bhel puri had a taste of sweet, sour, and savory all in one dish. The mango lassi was extremely tasty, the only problem was that I didn't have more! For the price everything was worth it, these two items cost less than $13. The service was great, the cashier was patient with me while I was figuring what I wanted to order.

Highlight: Bhel Puri ($5.99), Mango Lassi ($3.99) Stopped by for a quick morning bite and the bhel puri was packed with flavor. Savory, with a hint of sweetness and spice, and tangy, crispy, and crunchy. I remember the puffed rice being more crunchy, but the taste itself was delicious. The mango lassi was on the sweet side but overall fresh and creamy. Hospitality: You order at the front and it's self-service. Honorable Mention: Lots of open seating and there's a lot of yummy options on the menu.

Shiv Sagar - Always a Favorite Been here many times, and the food never disappoints! Authentic Indian flavors, consistent quality, and amazing dosas and chaats. Feels like a taste of home every time.

Yum yum yum! This Indian restaurant is extremely accommodating for vegans, given that it is vegetarian, and EXTREMELY reasonable in price. The service is fast and the food is delicious! I got the Chana, samosas, and pakora. Yum!

First of all, the restaurant was clean, well maintained and felt upscaled On top of that, everything we ordered was very reasonable and delicious. My favorites was the Vada Pav, Dosa and Dabeli. Definitely reminded me of home. Spice was pretty mild for the most part Loved how nice the folks were in taking our order.

Shiv Sagar might be the top place I'd take my vegetarian friends visiting Houston to. Maharaja Bhog is good, but pricey. Shiv Sagar is great if you're not quite feeling buffet. The menu is quite expansive. I would say it's a little difficult to decide what to get! Everything is so cheap we split 5 items between the 4 of us and didn't break $10 per person and that's with 2 lassis and a chai! I recommend the chapati bhaji, vegetable biryani, mysore masala dosa (which takes a while to make, FYI), pani puri, and cheese pav bhaji. One suggestion for the restaurant is making it easier to know if your food is ready, since it's counter service and there's quite a few dishes for other tables that can be confusing.

Visited Shiv Sagar after so long, overall experience was horrible. Bad food, worst customer service. Literally scammed my kids by charging $2 extra each on already overpriced vada paav ($7+$2) and paav bhaji ($8+$2) for regular serving - no extra paavs!!!! When asked they showed a small sign hidden on there to justify. It's not there in their price menu at all. Stating that it's Indian paav. Bhatura chola was inedible, yet we did not complain about it. Bad reused oil gave heart burn right away We are never ever going back to that place. They got so popular that don't care about quality or customer's concerns at all. Beware of their malpractices. Better go to honest or Chowpatty chat, far better places.

We had some errands in the area and got a late lunch at Shiv Sagar. We got Sev Puri, Bhel Puri, Pav Bhaji, and Mango Lassi. We loved Bhel puri and Sev Puri, Mango lassi was good. Pav Bhaji wasn't our favorite it only tasted of tomatoes, missing all the spices.

I enjoyed a nice South I dian Dosa and two Samosas which were flavored quite nicely. One has to go up front to the counter to order then they bring one's food over to you

The chole had literally like five chickpeas, I'm not even kidding...

I ordered through one of the delivery apps and scored a buy one get one free special, which made the value absolutely worth it. For the amount of food I received, the price was great. The food was ready within about seven minutes of me placing the order. That kind of efficiency is impressive. They were also very attentive and made sure everything was correct. As for the food itself, it tasted really good. The flavors were solid and satisfying. Is it the best Indian food I have ever had? Our order included potato samosas (BOGO), the chicken 65 (BOGO), goat curry, palak paneer, and garlic naan. Samosas and the chicken 65 were both delicious; dip both in that mint sauce with the samosas to kick up the flavor. Be careful as the chicken 65 (mini fried chicken bites) have spiciness to it with a good amount of chili powder and pepper kicked in. The goat curry was alright, don't know if I would order it again as the grease was overwhelming. I wasn't a fan of the palak paneer, found it too runny and it was leaking when it was delivered to us. Also the garlic naan was a bit hard in the middle; maybe it's due to the packaging? Wouldn't mind ordering here again but we'll definitely do some different items. Hopefully the samosas and chicken 65 are still on the BOGO status cause we'll definitely take those again.

Their longevity (#1) of a near half century is nothing short of impressive, earning a nostalgic place in the hearts of many Houston diners, a good number of whom trace their first Indian cuisine experiences at this very location. While I do wish their success, it's hard not to point out minor mishaps in different aspects of the overall restaurant experience, which include: :: Awkward stares from the staff as they hover or stand in the middle of the room. It's understandable that they're monitoring to help where needed, but even then I will have to flag them down for water, napkins, or the bill. :: Buffet maintenance. They're semi-quick to replenish, but extremely slow at maintaining the cleanliness. Splatter from the daal makhani, a serving spoon not returned to the same serving tray, or even customers forgetting to close the bins at the dessert station (#2) could all be mitigated by a designated person keeping it tidy. :: Food quality. The tandoori chicken has been dry, the saag paneer could be creamier, and chicken tikka masala has had their bland days. Even the naan can be a bit too dry at times. Thankfully I've fared better with the chana masala and paneer makhani. I would also steer clear of their fruit punch. :: Decor is dark and dated. It still reminds me of a place that is stuck in time, which for most experiences are usually my favorite. The natural lighting during lunch alleviates this slightly, but the dinner hour makes this place feel like eating in an older hotel lobby. The vibes are most definitely challenging. :: Foodflation. Another price hike in the last year brings the buffet price to just under $22. While it's a nice jump from what it was previously, it does leave me wishing for more, especially when the prices keep climbing. ___________ (#1) 46 years. Pros -There were a lot of vegetarian options that taste good. I actually thought the vegetarian choices tastes better than non-veg. The buffet area looks impressive. I liked this portion of the restaurant but do feel that space is limited especially with large parties. -Staff were all very nice and helpful. -There was a dosa station. I didn't get to try because I was just so full! Cons -We went during lunchtime and although we didn't have to wait for a table, it was crowded at the buffet area when getting food, and at times people take a longer time getting food. -The non-veg was a bit disappointing as the taste was a bit bland, especially the curry types which should be bursting with flavors. -They offered a special fish dish but it has bones which I don't prefer. -They did not have my favorite puri when we were there! No Indian buffet restaurant should ever run out of puri or not offer! -There was mango ice cream and a variety of other desserts!

The inside isn't giant -- on the smaller side, with a lot of tables packed in, plus a couple of larger ones for bigger parties. Pro Tip: The spice level is was Medium/low, so if you are expecting some very spicy dishes you need to ask for them. Frontier Beef Karhai, $19.50 -- 3.5/5. Himalayan fried chicken, $24.99 -- 4.5/5. Nice crispy batter, prepared a little differently than you're used to. It's skinless, bone-on chicken that's been filleted off the bone a bit, so instead of a plain drumstick, it's more like a filleted drumstick, with the breast filleted off, with a little bone left on to hold it together. The chicken was super tender and moist and the batter was crunchy. There's a bit of an Indian flavor profile, but not overwhelming -- I was actually hoping for a little more spice, kick, and heat. Still, very good chicken, and I'd try it again. Rice, 3.5/5. Solid side, but nothing spectacular. I've had much better. Garlic naan, $9 -- 3.5/5. Solid, big piece of naan. Would get it again. Service was quick. The food took a little while to come out, mostly because of the fried chicken -- though we ordered that right when we sat down, then ordered the rest about ten minutes later as we looked over the menu. If you've lived in Houston all your life, I highly suggest giving this place a try. It's one of those Houston staples that's been around, and some of the things they do are really good and a little different. That said, from a value perspective I think a place like Aga's outshines them just slightly. I've had many of the same curries at Aga's and find them a touch better, and a slightly better value. In the end, it's a totally fine place for takeout or to sit down and eat give it a try. Would recommend, and would return.

These are some of the best drinks I've ever had at any type of Indo-Pak restaurants in Houston. The mint lemonade was definitely in a league of its own. We didn't go for any appetizers, just went straight in to the entrées. The Chicken Hara Masala Supreme. Just wow, chef's kiss. Think cut up chicken thighs in a green curry that almost has a salsa like mouth feel with vegetables. Absolutely decadent. The Steak Tikka. Round of applause. I overheard the owner telling other tables that it's the best steak in Houston. I'll say it's the best steak I've ever had at an Indo-Pak restaurant. The steak was super tender it had that famous Tikka style smokiness. The Butter Chicken. Pretty damn solid. The gravy was silky and perfectly textured. They also use chicken thighs for this, which makes it even better. The Saag Paneer. It was all right, I've had better at other places, but still super solid. The Paneer was fresh and was great on all the various naans we got. For the naan, we just got the garlic and the butter naan. They are absolutely great when they come straight out of the tandoor oven, but I found that they get a little too hard if not eaten quickly. I'm sure they would reheat really well. We also tried the spicy rocket naan and it decent. I would just stick with garlic and butter. The only miss for me was the Mutton Biryani. Don't get me wrong, it's a solid biryani dish, but I've had better that had a little bit more flavor. The mutton was very tender, but the opportunity was making the rice a little bit less clunky. I see a lot of reviews with people hating on things like service or area. Let me just say we had no issues with service. The service was top-notch. We spent $222 with tip across three people. A little pricey but totally worth it.
