Chowpatty is an Indian Chaat chat and Dosa restaurant at Hillcroft. When we visited Saturday evening, the place was already crowded with limited seating available. It was bit of a chaos, seemed like they were severely understaffed. But soon an employee started rearranging tables and chairs to make more seating available and a staff cleaned a table so that we could sit. You have to order and pay at the counter and the staff brings you the food. There is no number or buzzer but the lady at counter made sure all our dishes arrived, not just for us but all the tables around. How she managed it all was beyond me. The food itself was pretty good. Got multiple dishes but pani puri and dahi puri were my favorites. More like 3.5 stars. This place was recommended by a friend, and I was craving chaat so thought it was the perfect day to try it out. There's ample parking, though it's hilcroft so even a large lot can get crowded. Inside, it's a clean place, with plenty of seating. Self service utensils and such, you order at the counter and your food is brought out to you. I ordered the sampler chaat- it comes with samosa chaat, sev puri, padpi chaat, and dahi puri. And then they had Khaman Dhokla, which I can't say no to, so had some of that as well. The chaat was.... Not my favorite. The yogurt and chickpeas were so incredibly cold, almost frozen, and that make it not enjoyable. In India and Pakistan, chaat is served hot, but that's not the case in the states. And I understand that. I'd still expect it to be room temperature, not ice cold, almost like I'm eating food straight from the freezer. The Khaman was soft and fluffy, but the chutney it was served with left a bit to be desired. I've brought it home with me, so I can doctor my own chutney and enjoy the Khaman at home. I have been coming to this place for years and the fare is solid and reliable. The interior is open with plenty of open seating tables, and I really like the decorative lighting. When we dropped by there was no one at the front, so we did have to knock on the kitchen door. Someone immediately came out to help us then. We ordered the dahi puri and the sev puri-both were delicious with generous portions. The samosas were also fresh, crispy and just the right amount of spicy. The mango lassi was also very refreshing and fresh. However, the malai kofta I ordered did not taste like malai kofta and instead was pretty salty and tasted more like chana masala. We were traveling from Austin to IAH and thought of stopping at this place for lunch. I didn't realize till I was about to write my review that I had been here back in 2019 and wrote a 5 star review. But today's visit was not worth a 5-star review at all. It was more of. 2.5-3 star rating experience. Tried chaat platter, which came with dahi bada, dahi puri, aloo tikki chat and sev puri. First the 4 compartment plate was not good for digging spoons in. All the compartments were very small. Spoons size too big. Aloo tikki was disappointing. Chola was cold not tikki was not crispy at all. Dahi bada was good, probably because of sweet yogurt in it. Rest two were ok. Next, we ordered chowpatty thali which came with 1 dal, 4 curries, 3 rotis, rice, gulabjamun, salad, samosa, lassi. Roti was nice. Soft and thin. Among all curries, only dal was good. Aloo was also ok but less gravy. Paneer, kofta and chola disappointed us, cold and no taste. We placed order for extra rotis. Separate roti set only comes with 3 roti, you can't change the quantity. First it took very long (probably because it was getting crowded) but also it was uncooked and thicker than previous. On the top of that, there a child roaming around (customer), he came and put his palm on our roti, probably just being naive and his parents didn't even care. We let it go. I recommend sticking to the Chaat items! Paneer chilli was delicious, the sauce was savory and has that indochinese taste. Whereas the Schezwan noodles was alright. I almost felt like I could taste the msg and the color used to cook this food. The place offers a lot many snack option. I really liked the Pani Puri here because they give you option of either getting served in a plate or stand at the counter meanwhile someone makes piece by piece for you. It gives you an original feel of eating Pani Puri in India. Each plate has either 8 or 10 pani puri (I lost the count in nostalgia). The Puri was crisp as required. Interestingly they feel potato chana as filling and also Ragda (white peas curry) both. Usually in India, you get to ask to fill one only. So this was like double bonanza. For people who cannot eat spicy, they also offer to fill some sweet chutney in the Puri. We also ordered a grilled Aloo Matar Sandwich. It took more than 20 mins for the sandwich but it was quite the wait. I hadn't had Aloo Matar for some months now and it tasted really well. It was topped with cheese whereas the sandwich was grilled with perfection. Served with ketchup on side, my friend was hoping if they could also serve it with fries (too much expectations). There was some grilled cheese too in the sandwich which just added onto the taste of Aloo Matar. June 2021. I was looking out for some lunch options and chowpatty grabbed my attention. There was one particular thing on the menu that intrigued me - the chowpatty thali, with 4 different curries, lentils, rice, roti (chapati), papad and sweet lassi along with a desert, wasn't it a mouthful? There I was, on a weekday afternoon, hungry and waiting for my thali to arrive, and my god, was I just blown away by the sheer quantity of food at display for a single dude to devour. I held my head high, took my spoon like a shovel and dug at every curry, one by one. For my curries I had paneer, kofta, chole and potato curry (I'm positive about all of these). The curries had amazing flavor, the curries were rich, creamy and tasty. The lassi was thick and lentils and rice were an amazing pair. The guest of honor was the roti (chapati), so soft, fresh and hot with a pinch of ghee (I'm guessing). The desert (gulab jamun) was yum! I couldn't fathom the amount of food that I just gulped down in one sitting. Everything was just on point. I am giving 1 star because thats the minimum one I could give. On the name of Indian food , some of Indian restaurants in US making people fool respective to food quality. I wanted to try out other vegetarian Indian restaurants in Houston and Chowpatty was next! Came at around 1:15 pm on a Saturday with a party of 6. The parking lot was packed but the good news was that there were constantly people going out to their cars. There's only the question of if they would actually leave and if there was already someone waiting for the spot. When we walked in, the decor was something I wasn't used to at an Indian place - it was definitely Bollywood themed with "hip" black and white chairs. There was another table of 6 already seated; it seemed like a group of Indian people taking out their non-Indian friends. We headed to the counter and took a look at the menu. It was quite extensive and even though I had done some basic research, I had my questions. We were vegetarian, but we essentially ate Jain (no onion/garlic) vegetarian, so it required asking what we could have. Jain-friendly items are not marked on the menu - not to mention there are no English translations or pictures. There are some items that can accommodate Jains. She asked if we were interested in snacks or lunch. I was interested in food in general but asked the people I were with. They had their eyes on the thali meal set. They offer two but we could have the Gujarati thali. My non-Jain, omnivorous friend (the odd one out, haha) got the Punjabi one. I got the thali meal and also got the gobi (cauliflower) paratha to go. Good thing I didn't further question about the snacks as there was a decent line forming behind us by then and the Indian girl behind us who had rolled her eyes at one point (she ended up ordering a snack that took 5 minutes to get to her) might have done something more audible at the wait. You get a ticket with a number and find your seat. You grab your own napkins and silverware off to the side. They'll call out your number when it's ready. The thali took a bit of time, but it didn't seem too long as we were talking to pass the time. Once it was ready, you get enough food for two. It comes with buttermilk, a basket of fried puffy bread, and your assortment of curries, rice, cilantro chutney, a spicy pickle side, and two yellow bread squares (I don't know what it's called but I've had it before and these are my favorite thus far) along with a dessert. The Punjabi thali comes with a different set of curries, flat bread, a sweet lassi drink, and gulab jamun for dessert. It was quite good. As a note, they have complimentary sambar soup which is Jain friendly and quite good and not too spicy. Sad that my set didn't have malai kofta (still waiting for a place that serves Jain malai kofta) but what I did get, I liked. I even liked my slightly salted buttermilk (or is it lassi?) and finished my sister's as well). I finished half and got a to go box for the rest. I was automatically given my to-go order when I went to the counter to ask for the box. The paratha was huge and consumed later. It was well spiced and came with yogurt and an Indian spicy pickle of sorts that was rather salty but tasted decent when eaten sandwiched between the paratha and yogurt. I couldn't tell it was cauliflower, but then again, cauliflower isn't strong in taste. The place was clean, the employee was fairly helpful, and the restroom was pretty clean, but note it is just a room. If there's someone already in there, you get to wait outside. I'd love to return again - this time for the chat (snacks). Food was reasonably priced for what you get and they were good. Our dishes were cleared once it was clear we had finished but we're just talking. By the time we left, most all of the tables had filled up. Looks like the place gets good business! read more

The Indian street food is still decent but my favorite Indo-Chinese options on the menu have fallen big time. Hakka noodles were very basic when I recently tried them and both times I've tried Gobi Manchurian recently, it's been over spiced, over-sauced, and a far cry from its flavorful version from a couple of years ago. We have been coming to this spot for over a year or so and now we love it even more! The new owner is extremely friendly and even took some photos of us when he saw us taking photos of each other in their newly designed interior. There's a nice corner with wall greenery and a wooden wall that is just so picture perfect with great lighting! The food has our usual favorites like dahi puri and masala dosa, and also some new additions like the jinni roll dosa! Omg so amazing! It's got some Indo-chinese flavors in there and is full of spicy deliciousness. We ordered the cheese paratha as well and the Bombay veg burger for takeout! This was our first time going to little India in Houston and we checked out the review for this place. The food was really good and the interior of the restaurant was pretty nice as well. The reason i didn't give it 5 star because it took them 55 mins to bring our order out. I hope they can improve the order time for the tables.
