Mushroom shwarma
Gaurav B.

How do I start? Fried Oyster mushrooms sounds so Shouk'n Good ! We had to try this place. We have had vegetarian shawarma before but most places its the impossible or beyond meat or some sort of fusion soy crumbles. Never tried a oyster mushroom shawarma before. Shawarma itself was so well seasoned and flavorful went so well other options that we picked in the platter. We really wanted to try the Fried Mushroom schnitzel sandwich but they didn't have it at that time so we decided to go for Falafel platter and the falafels so were different form other places, packed with flavor. Pita was so soft and fluffy unlike I have had before and yes I had tried Pita in hundreds of different food joints. Can't wait to be back for fried mushroom sandwich and the shouk burger.

Great falafel place that's possibly the best in the DMC area, according to my wife. Service is good as well, but the atmosphere could use some improvement. Be sure to get the white sauce and spread that _______ on everything; it's sooooo nom nom good .

Fried Shouk'n, Spice Fries, and build your own bowl

I had a fantastic meal at Shouk! This all vegan business excels providing Israeli inspired food with plenty of flavor. Shouk has fairly limited indoor seating and has three tables outside. It is certainly plenty of room for 2-4 people to dine in. Additionally their bathroom has a changing table which makes this a really family friendly option. As a new mom I am now noting what bathrooms are compatible for diaper changes. To order your meal you use their touchscreen kiosk. You can also scan a QR code from the Shouk app to accumulate points and redeem discounts. My absolute favorite meal is the fried Shouk'n sandwich with spiced fries. The fried oyster mushrooms are a crispy and chewy texture. I get the sauce on the side to make sure the pita is not drenched in too much creaminess. And I love the veggies included in this sandwich that add some lightness and tang to the pita. The French fries are spiced so well and always come out perfectly cooked. The portion size of fries is also generous. I can never finish my side and always offer for people to help me finish them. Shouk also has a build your own bowl option which is fantastic. You can pick 8 items as the base and then pay extra for falafel or other specialty items. I love assembling my own bowl so I dan out all my favorite veggies in. The food at Shouk comes out quickly. I think the staff at this location work hard and are very friendly. I am making my meals at Shouk more regular because it's a very quick meal to pick up and the quality is always great.

Fried Shouk'n and Shawarma

Shouk came up on a lunch search I did in the area. We decided to take a chance with a new place and were well rewarded for this chance. Pros: Two screens to place your order on with pictures of all the food. I love seeing what my food will look like before ordering so I loved this. Easy to pay and go. Amazing food-it took about 20 minutes from the time we ordered until we got the food, so it was fresh. Everything tasted amazing and the coconut pudding was the most unique thing I've tried in the last month. I could eat that every day. Cons: There's seating inside but all large four seater tables when most of the people that came in while we were there were couples. There wasn't enough seating for everyone that came in. Next time I'll order take out. The food didn't come with any indication of what was in either of the boxes and since I forgot what I ordered, it was a little confusing. There were only two of us, but if it was a larger group I could see that being frustrating. The restaurant has kind of an awkward layout. The trash, which is right next to the door, causes unnecessary people flow issues. We had to the hold door and wait for people who were sorting their trash because there wasn't enough space to pass them, which was fine except there was a line of people waiting throw things away, which meant we just stood with the door open looking for a break in the trash line to get in. Overall, I really liked Shouk and will come back for takeout soon.

I was extremely impressed by my experience at Shouk. When you walk in you order on a computer screen. The wait for the food took about 5 minutes. There is some indoor and outdoor seating but not too much so keep this in mind. Personally, I got my meal to go. I started with the classic falafel which was amazing. It was also extremely filling as the portion size was quite large. I didn't feel too bad about that though because I knew it was plant-based and fresh. I finished with the choco-cardamom cookie which melts in your mouth (just as described on the menu). This is a great option for those who are dairy free, vegan, vegetarian, or kosher. Can't wait to go back!

Hummus
Bhavna A.

Got the Shouk burger which was fantastic as usual. Also had the hummus and lentil soup. The pita just smelled and tasted so wonderful and soft as a pillow. Then I got the malabi, a coconut milk pudding which was also amazing. I just love Shouk. Naturally Plant based and truly good fast casual cuisine with no fanfare or fuss. You have my heart!

Shawarma Mushroom sandwich

Rockville location: kind of get a 'dive' feel when you walk in. I wouldn't characterize it as inviting, warm, or very clean. I was apprehensive but determined to give it a try because I love mushrooms! There were a couple of people hanging around waiting for their orders. It's small, the walls beg for fresh paint, the floor could use some updating (different shades of concrete), and an overall vibe of the need for a good old-fashioned scrubbing. So, if you've never been, you walk up to the counter and place your order via a touchscreen. We found seats and waited. After we got our order - my wife got the falafel and I got two pocket sandwiches to try, the fried mushroom and the mushroom shawarma - we dug in. I cannot express my surprise and delight at how delicious the food is there! Even the side kale salad was excellent. The mushrooms were succulent, flavorful, rich, and paired wonderfully with the pocket sandwich additions. I have decided that I can't decide which one is my favorite, so when I go again, and I will, I'll have a hard time choosing. Or...maybe get both again

The food was soo good! We got the bowls and loved them. It was nice that the whole place is plant based so we didn't have to worry about anything. The service was great and the place was very nice and cute. It was a great place for a chill hangout.

The word "Shouk" means open air market in Hebrew. It specializes in plant based foods that use fresh vegetables, grains, legumes, and seeds. Truthfully, I was a little hesitant to try Shouk, until my son in law, who is a chef, raved about it. I thought it would be the perfect game day meal. I ordered humus and the felafel sandwich. Ordering was so easy. You come in and order on a screened computer in the front of the restaurant. The computer prompts you, if you don't want any items in the dish or if you want to add on menu items. I took out the onion on my sandwich. The people working there were very pleasant and nice. I was in and out in about 5 minutes. I liked the middle Eastern decor. The hamsa hand on the wall stands for good luck. Well, my food was absolutely delicious. The breads are made in house and they are fresh and tender. The hummus was one of the best I have ever eaten. It was light, creamy, and flavorful. I couldn't stop eating it. Then, the felafel sandwich was packed full of huge felafel balls, fresh cucumber, and tomatoes. The tahini sauce on top was really tasty. The felafel balls were so tender and spiced perfectly. They melted in your mouth. The sandwich was huge and I ate it in two sittings. Probably, because I ate too much humus. Lol! Well, this may have been my first time, but it definitely won't be my last. My brother in law recommended trying the chicken nuggets. They are made from mushrooms. Next time, I will give those a try. This food is wonderful and I could not tell it was plant based. So, healthy and packed with flavor, this is a win-win celebration! Thanks Shouk.

We stopped by Shouk to try their new Crab Cake sandwich, and it didn't disappoint. As a Marylander, I'm VERY picky about crab cakes, and I have to hand it to Shouk for their ambition in creating a vegan version. The texture was spot on - if I closed my eyes, I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference, except that it was a bit bland, flavor-wise. Still, a vegan crab cake that actually felt like crab cake? You gotta give this a try. High marks for their Shouk Sausage and Malabi, too. Of all the vegan places trying to make it in this world, Shouk is on the right track.

Oh Mama Grill

Wow, Oh Mama Grill sure has gotten an upgrade! Beautiful tiles, love the black-and-white, crisp,…read moreclean look, and new booths -- though I didn't try sitting in one yet, didn't think to as I was on a mission to get to all the Israeli restaurants around for and on Israel Independence Day, ha ha! (And yes! I succeeded!) The benches are a light, bright-looking wood. There are also regular tables for those who prefer that .... It's amazing how much spacious seating is packed into this little place! I wish the outside reflected the new, light beauty but I guess the treasure is only to be found by those who venture in .... As an Israeli-in-America, I appreciate the selection of Israeli drinks in the cooler, and of course the national snack of falafel! Some say they don't put fries in the pitas -- well, yeah! That's true! If you don't ask, you don't receive! I ask! I receive! I do sometimes find the sandwiches to be kind of messy, so I try to sometimes get less various salads and pickles and such so it's not completely overflowing -- because this place is GENEROUS! Of course, if you're not used to kosher food, you'll probably not understand that it does cost more because for one thing (out of many!), there has to always be an 'extra' person called a mashgiach (supervisor in Hebrew) who oversees everything to make sure it's all, well, kosher! Kosher meat is more expensive, too. And yeah, meat doesn't come with dairy! So that is not available. I heard someone asking if they had a cheeseburger and had to work to not crack up about it! I LOVE the grilled eggplant bits you can get put in -- they're special, not in the regular line up, right there at the end -- because not only do they add so much flavour and texture with so little bulk, but eggplant is one of those things I usually cannot eat because it hurts my oh-so-sensitive tongue, but this place makes it per-fect-ly, mmm ... ! So delicious! I enjoy both purple and green cabbage and carrots, but I don't like the flavour of the onions. That makes me sad, because I LOVE onions, but these ones have something on them that I don't like (looks like it's sumac -- which is ironic, because that's something that I normally love and use all the time!) and I end up picking out when I sometimes forget or get hopeful and just get them again anyway .... Actually, the onions are one of the few condiments here I do not like! The pickled beets are great -- and of course, great for your liver! They are cleansing, nutritious, and boost your Russian-ness, to boot! Or your Russian Jewishness, anyway .... I know that eating them makes my grandmother proud! The benefits of eating here are not and are also not like ones you can attain in just any regular restaurant, and it's here for people who want this kind of thing. It literally is a cornerstone, being on the corner and providing the things certain of us need -- Israeliness, Jewishness, kosherness, etc. It's too bad it suffers from bad reviews by people who don't understand or care. By the way, the work that goes into making all these salad items fresh every day is, let's just say, a LOT! I almost always get the falafel -- I used to get a platter, but it was too much for a meal so I switched back to the classic pita version and that's a perfect amount for me for a meal, plus I feel it's better for the environment because it comes packaged minimally in a little parchment paper rather than a recyclable aluminum plate with a non-recyclable aluminum-and-paper top. Truth be told, I could have trouble finishing writing this review because thinking of Oh Mama Grills' falafel is making me so hungry! I am really getting in the mood for some right now! Other things I eat from here regularly (and have for years): Israeli salad Moroccan (vegetarian) cigars Rice Other things I know are great by way of seeing the delight on my eating partner's face while consuming: Okay, I so I don't remember, but various meat things! Chicken, I think .... Things I don't love from Oh Mama Grill: Bean soup -- didn't have enough flavour for me .... Sabich. I dunno. Just didn't love it! It's hard to top falafel, in my opinion -- well, this falafel from this place, that is -- so I don't feel the need to explore the menu very much .... There aren't a whole lot of places (if any!) that offer such a variety of salads, pickles, and sauces! As an absolute pickle-lover who finds pickles and not just that but a variety of pickles a MUST for my diet, this place has it going on like no other! Update! Tried sitting on a bench at a booth! It's pretty hard, not super-comfortable, but doable -- however, a harder seat is better for your posture and health long-term! The falafel pita with toppings aplenty is so delicious, I am craving one right now ... and, in case you've ever tried some of the marinated types of vegetables here and found them too sour, I did too! Now, that is fixed. They are no longer so sour, and are therefore much more eminently edible! My eating partner agrees.

First, I thought the guy behind the counter was very friendly. The bagel shop has a decent breakfast and lunch menu with, of course, a wide array of bagel. I think there were at least 12 different variety of bagels. For my dining experience, I went with the breakfast combo, which came with two eggs, a bagel, homefries and a canned soda or coffee. The price tag was 13 bucks, well closer to 15 with tax. I'm sorry but based on the establishment and other places in the area, I did not think the breakfast platter/combo was worth the 13 dollar prices, especially since the combo/platter did not come with a meat. I think 8 bucks is a fair price. Also, I thought it was odd that the bagel was not served with cream cheese. Maybe it was on me to actually ask for cream cheese. Although I went with a canned soda, instead of a coffee, for my platter, I was shocked that the place charges for coffee refills. I think the cost of refills were either 50 cents or 50%. I do not think that I've ever dined in a restaurant that charged for coffee refills. Perhaps, this is something new due to the new tariffs that the consumers have been hit with. Although the food was edible, I have a feeling that I will stick to my main Sunday, post-workout bagel spot.

If you want your bagel a little crispier on top, stick it in your home oven (or toaster oven) at 350 for 3 minutes. Pro tip: they often bake too many bagels each day, so they freeze them and sell them for half price (by the dozen). Ask for a dozen frozen bagels, and they'll often have some for you. Use the oven tip above (adding a minute or two) to get them to the right temp for quick eating. Overall, this place is bare-bones, but the thrill is in the bagel. Enjoy.
